Anyone who has an older computer - I updated my Toshiba laptop I haven't used in a few years from Windows 7 to Windows 10 this morning. It took a little while, but it's still free. Maybe not on purpose, but still free nonetheless. Since my wife is working from home I figured another weapon for her couldn't be bad - if needed.

@jmonroe - you have until July 15th to cheat on your taxes.

The pandemic will eventually slow itself down - vaccine, treatment,
herd immunity - some combination of those.

The damage being done to the economy, in my not so expert opinion, will take longer to come back - but it will. At some point, we will need to face head on the shortcomings of our healthcare system and wealth stratification in our country. I’m not saying I know what the solution is, because I don’t.

In the meantime, enjoy what you can now. Get out for a drive in those new wheels. I’m trying very hard not to wish this time away because life is way way way too short.

28FF...thanks for that post. Couldn’t agree with you more. The budget deficit was already bad. Now, it’s going to be astronomical, which of course affects a whole host of other economic realities, most of them bad.

I was thinking if I would have been able to get a better deal on my Stinger right now than I did at the beginning of the year. Came to the conclusion, don’t know...don’t care. I like my deal. And, am truly enjoying the car.

Doesn’t look like I’ll find a buyer for the TLX any time soon, though.

I think @driver100 and his wife did the right thing getting home early. Leave Florida to the kids infecting each other with the cold virus/flu virus on spring break.

We left last Saturday so this is day #6 of self isolation. All travelers are to self isolate for 2 weeks after returning. Glad we got back early, airlines are gouging customers, and some people people are stranded in Europe and in South America.....imagine being stranded in a hotel room in some other country, like Honduras where they are under a military lock down.
We have been ordering food online that either gets delivered, or we can pickup. We take Trixie for walks and to the dog park, that and emailing is our social life.
If we stayed in Florida there would be nothing much to do...even the community swimming pool and clubhouse are closed, and getting back now would be very difficult as flights are being canceled. It would be nice to walk Trixie in 80F rather than 32F temps...but, better to be back home.

I despise Windows 10 and if I could have kept Windows 7 with MS still offering updates, I would have. But since MS stopped those updates, it became vulnerable and forced many on to W10. Such a mess of an OS. Last week it broke my home network again, for the umpteenth time, and somehow it does it in a different way every time. It took me days to figure out the latest solution.

I agree, but, as you said, it couldn't be updated any more. Not much choice other than open source and she doessn't want to deal with that.

Funny how everyone seems to have different Win 10 experiences.

All of mine from work to personal have been fantastic. All the computers talk to one another for file sharing easier and more predictable than ever, updates are fairly smooth and it all just kind of “works”.

I lost my WiFi card on the oldest laptop recently and I blamed it on software and did a repair install of Win 10 that went well. It ended up needing a new card, but I went with a new USB WiFi card since the only available internal card didn’t have new drivers (needed win 7 drivers) so I was worried about future problems.

I checked: Whistle-blowers can get 15% to 30% of the amount collected if the case involves more than $2 million in taxes, penalties, interest and other amounts. (If the suspected cheater is an individual, he or she must also make more than $200,000 a year.) Below those thresholds, the award is discretionary.
Unless JM has more than $2 million it isn't worth it I guess :'(

Consider yourself very fortunate. When networking breaks, the official MS support sources only have a single suggestion which almost never works. Fortunately there is a massive volume of material available online from those who experienced the same thing and all their trials and tribulations in trying to get it working again. MS did this by quietly eliminating Homegroup from a Win10 update a year or two back without telling anyone, and ever since it has been a nightmare.

Yeah that would do it depending on how you have things setup.

I just go to a run command and type \\computername\ to manually go where I want to. Whatever drives/folders I've shared show up.

AT least you did have an option of driving home in the 250. Even though it doesn't have a backup camera, it would have gotten you there. Of course you'd have to drive it back next fall or ship it down. Or sell it at home and replace it in FL with a different car next fall after you were here again.

Just kidding about the backup camera.

Sam's Club trip survived. Lots of water, no TP, meat was plentiful for the most part. Signs everywhere limiting people to only one high demand item. Most people were keeping their distance from one another, even when waiting in line. We got everything we need to sustain us for awhile so no trips will be needed hopefully until this is all on the downswing.

I ran to Walmart early this morning.

They were in stock on all the hot stuff but not all sizes/varieties. Limiting everyone to one unit of many things.

We go through tons of eggs in our house (the Kids live on them); I didn't see a sign limiting them so I grabbed two 18 packs. A store person saw them in my cart and told me I had to return one to the shelf. I went back over and saw they just restocked the 2 pack of 18 so grabbed that instead. Kind of funny if you think about it.

I got to the self checkout line where they again were monitoring quantities. HUGE fight with a woman and a store associate over Lysol spray. She had three and had to give two back. This was at 7:45 this morning.

Indeed, maybe this will help the evolution to a more just and sustainable healthcare system.

What gets me is some never-worked-a-day-in-their-godforsaken-lives politicos (I won't say from which side of the swamp) are against the stimulus payment idea, something sorely needed and stat, as millions of people are going to end up in financial ruin. There will likely need to be more aggressive measures if this goes on longer than most are planning, too. The economic impact of this will be much more than the few months some are predicting/hoping.

Some pine about the China travel ban with political bitterness, but from what I know about the hot zone locally, it didn't come directly from China.

Speaking of selling stock, I received a little pile of stock in my company parting gift, and sold it about 3 weeks ago. For once in my life, I timed a market right! No insider info, just dumb luck. Small solace, as a couple of prospective local positions I thought I was possibly on an inside track for have both been put on hold, due to "rescoping". Another couple in the pipeline could be something, but aren't local, and moving would be a pain. However, it could be my chance to actually buy a detached house.

Amazing spring weather here, lighter than usual traffic horror, cheap gas, definitely go for a drive and enjoy what you have.

    Fingers crossed!

One of mine irked me a bit, as the in-person interview went well enough to the point where a couple people from the hiring committee were saying "when you start, you'll be doing this", etc. But apparently something was realigned, and it was put on hold - they even called me to explain it, which these days is something unusual. Better to have it happen then than after being hired, I suppose.

Hmm, as I was typing that, a phone interview request for something else landed in my email box. Still just a matter of time.

    Random Friday thoughts:

$3.00 in 1960 is about $26.00 today, so says my inflation calculator. So, no real difference in oil prices.

The kids cooking studio is shut down until the end of April, per our governor's orders. The wife and daughter went there today to bring back a bunch of food that they won't be using - be interesting to see what comes home with them.

Last, a bit of levity for those of us that are now working from home:

No more running to stores for us. I signed up for delivery via Instacart. First available delivery — next Tuesday night! We will get by. Our big worry is getting supplies for our dog. She’s very old and can only eat a few foods. The big bags of frozen chicken weren’t available, so I may try one of the other stores in our area.

I had to go to my bank this morning to make a decision about that CD that matured today.

I sat down with the manager and she described my options. They offered a 9 month CD at 1.4% or a 12 month for 1.5%. I am now getting 1.4% in my checking account. So the interest in my checking account went from 2.0% last Friday to 1.5% Tuesday to 1.4% today.

I called my brother from the bank and he suggested going with the 9 month CD at 1.4% because rates are going to drop even more in the checking account since it is a demand deposit and unprotected from interest reductions by the bank.

I had called 6 banks and the average rate for a CD (9-12 months) was .4%. So I added money to the CD from my checking account to freeze the interest rate from further decreases in my checking. So I made it a jumbo CD.

This feels like 2007/2008 all over again. I just wanted to at least earn close to inflation on whatever available cash I had. Thank God I was not in the market.

I told the wife that I expected a big spike in mental health issues. Which of course there will be no real process to deal with, and many people afraid to go out. Normal stressors, and now massive anxiety and panic. A bad combo.

So yes, likely to be many more deaths not directly from having the virus.

We are here for 7 months......insurance covers you for up to 6 months out of the country. If, we wanted to keep the C250 in Canada, it would need some modifications, and there would be taxes and duties. I think the plan would be, if we drove it back, we would drive it to Florida...or at least I would (Mrs D does not want to go on long drives any more - 5 hour limit max), and then I would fly back....do it in June or July, but that would depend on COVID 19 being over.
I don't think selling the car is an option at this point, I like it too much and it is worth far more to me than what I would get for it. Low mileage helps sell a car, but, you don't get much extra for those low miles, I am guessing maybe an extra $1000. I may as well keep it now and hope it becomes a classic :p

Couldn’t you do that over the phone? I’ve got a CD maturing too, but made my changes with a phone rep. I’m not sitting down with anybody for the time being. Even a bank manager.

I told the wife that I expected a big spike in mental health issues. Which of course there will be no real process to deal with, and many people afraid to go out. Normal stressors, and now massive anxiety and panic. A bad combo.

So yes, likely to be many more deaths not directly from having the virus.

I am wondering how much death and destruction there could be if people get really desperate....no money, mortgages to pay, businesses going under, companies shut down, it could get to be like the great depression - only now people can be armed to the teeth. Oh yeh, and kids out of school!

I was not sure I was going to roll it over or close it like I did with the CD earlier this month. They would not close it by phone nor could they increase the amount of the CD over the phone. They could roll it over by phone.

Weeks of social isolation might be plenty of time to sharpen pitchforks and blades, and get torches ready to go. Ooh, hope that isn't class warfare lolol

But really, if this thing explodes, the stimulus and bailouts needed to keep things moving will be monumental, and there will probably need to be a pause in overall housing-related payments.

my random friday thought: i bet the suicide rate is skyrocketing during this lockdown time.

I think it probably isn't yet, but absolutely will be - between the economy and being cooped up, if this is still happening around end of May, I agree it is going to skyrocket.
We just got an email from school that they are closing at least through the end of spring break (4/20). I think parents who were already on edge just poured big cups of draino. just sayin. I mean, if I'm already going crazy ...
We were told “indefinitely” for school closure.

So brutal. I think I am especially grumpy considering I’ve been out of work for a few months before this started.

Going to be tough just living in your own home with family despite the millions that will have financial struggles too.

I was just sitting on the patio, cracked open a frosty beverage and BAM kids soccer ball hits it ... spills and glass everywhere.

just called in a pick up order. the new normal for our usual Friday night go out to dinner event. Now Friday night call an order in, go pick it up. At least Iron hill still sells beer for takeout!

seems like most restaurants (that we normally go to) are trying to keep afloat on takeout and delivery. A bunch of them already did one or both of them, so really just shifting focus. and definitely some others adding that on the fly.

one good thing in NJ that a lot of the smaller places don't have liquor licenses so are BYOB, so you had to supply your own anyway. only thing changing is where you sit to eat it, and it is now cheaper (no waiter to tip).

No firearms at my house. But lots of other .... tools. I always imagined I should put steel shutters on the house, but I guess its too late now.

You do have to wonder if the gov would just lift the bans if things got too weird. Wouldn't that be easier? We still aren't at the levels we hit with H1N1, and we didn't go through all this trouble for that one. Yeah, I know we're trying to prevent, but, at some point, we have to weigh the cost of saving 1.5% of the population. Don't shoot the messenger.

And, ya know, maybe those with pre-existing conditions and overall poorer health should just isolate themselves?

I was figuring it would not take long to get to the 6 weeks total, so right around the end of April. Really hoping that at least some semblance of normal can come back on-line by then. really hard to see locking down entire cities or the country for that long.

and man am I kicking myself for going through with the car purchase. Really thinking will be regretting that big time soon.

my family really has good timing. we do that about 1 day before everything totally blew up, and the daughter found an apartment near work for 5/1, and our son is under contract on buying a house in later May. 3 things that given current upheaval, probably should not have done or be doing!

somewhat curious if anything happens to prevent the house closing. and at least with an apartment you have some options. Given the uncharted territory I expect a lot of SOP is going out the window.

Your car purchase might have only been a week or two off. Right now in this state of panic I can’t imagine that dealer’s won’t be giving them away just to maintain some level of cash flow. I’m really starting to get the itch with all this unexpected time on my hands now.

I cannot remember the last time oil was at $25.00 a barrel. PUG at my Costco is at $2.45 a gallon as of this morning. They expect a gallon of PUG could drop below $2.00 a gallon in the next several weeks. Unbelievable!

In 1960 a barrel of oil was around $3.00
It was only around $10-12 through much of the 90s.

@jmonroe - you have until July 15th to cheat on your taxes.

That's a really good point....does your government have a bounty system if you turn someone in? :)

Yes, you get 10% of whatever extra money they recover. For jmonroe that could add up to at least a dollar.

I've done my part to keep the economy going. I haven't curbed any spending, continuing to overpay at Starbucks, and eating out for lunch every day. (of course, it's takeout/curbside pick up at all locations, or drive-through).

I'm holding out. Still gotta wait for carvana to approve mine anyway. But figure I'll wait to see what happens with all of this mess. Both my wife and I are just business as usual as far as our office work goes, and actually even busier than normal because I have freelance work going on concurrently AND we are teaching live online martial arts classes and meeting with the owner about 9-10 times a week. LOTS of balls in the air.

Q, I was thinking along the same lines. at some point, let it go buy take the 10% or so worried about that and quarantine them away.

still not sure what is going to happen but if a Carvana would take my TLX off my hands for an even swap (keys for the rest of the payments!) it would be gone tomorrow.
