After further review, liquor stores are remaining open. so no need to run out now. I have a fair amount in stock. so good for now, since it is probably packed there at this point.

Liquor is my least problem. Until I picked up 10 bottles of caffeine free diet Pepsi yesterday when we were out we were on shaky ground. Only had 3 bottles left in the basement fridge.

Beer (even HG) takes up a lot of space. I think I'll go back to rum & coke, not that anyone, well, let's say cares.

It’s smart. The last thing you want is alcoholics unable to go to a bar and unable to get booze. People going into withdrawal poses a risk in terms of utilizing the healthcare system and tying up first responders.

Up here the stores stay open, but you order online or over the phone and they bring it to the curb.

I would have no problem calling in an order if that is what it takes. though I do like to browse the many aisles picking out stuff. But desperate times.

might go at 11 tomorrow when they open just to grab some white wine (we drink red but princess does not like that) and a case of beer just to have it. will use it eventually!

Big debate up here around liquor stores being open or closed. Virtually all of them here and in neighboring provinces are govt-run, except for private agencies in rural areas that carry limited selections. Here, the govt stores remain open on limited hours for now and are now closed on Sundays. They tried limiting customers to credit/debit card purchasing earlier this week because of fears of handling cash, probably raised by retail staff (though I don't know that for sure), but that didn't even last through the first day because of massive pushback by customers. Street people, those just getting by, etc would not have those cards of course, and apparently if anyone thought of that those objections were dismissed until things in the stores turned ugly.

In some other provinces they are closed and that is leading to its own problems. It is a strange situation in that the power to order them closed lies with the Chief Public Health Officers in each province, some of whom are staunch anti-alcohol zealots. They are aware of those who are dependent upon the stuff and the consequences of sudden withdrawal. For now ours at least remain open.

Son and I took a lap around the block just now. Amusing to me that we almost never see anybody else when we are walking the neighborhood, but now that you are supposed to stay inside, we passed 2 couples, a pair of kids, and 2 full families. Go figure.

Everybody needs to get out and get some air. It’s the only thing most of us can do with gyms closed and everyone at home. Most advice I’ve seen encourages walking, as long as social distance is maintained. It’s all that’s keeping me sane.

was going to stop at Lowes for some light bulbs, but based on how crowded the parking lot was, decided to pass. the Aldis lot was also quite full. My guess, not much social distancing going on at either place!

I ordered some lamp harps from Home Depot last week and had them delivered to the store. They text me when they arrived and I went to pick them up. They gave me a pick up code. There is a series of orange Pick Up Lockers right inside the front door. You don't even have to go completely inside the store.

This morning I ordered plumbing parts that they had in stock and had them delivered to the store. They text me in about 2 hours and said they were ready for pick up.

No people to mess with. I used one of their sanitizing wipes to clean my hands before I left since I had to touch the screen to enter my pick up code. Pretty neat.

I love Bully hill. though have not had the wine in a long time (we did stop about 4 years ago for a tasting). Loved their winery. went to the original one 30 years ago. Very funky, and a cool backstory. The new place is much bigger and more modern. Then went from counter culture to corporate, but the labels are still cool.

Those oldsters can feel entitled. An Ohio State legislator told me decades ago that he couldn't figure out why when someone turned 65 they shouldn't have to pay for anything--this was at the time when Ohio oldsters were fighting paying property taxes for schools, etc., using all kinds of logic.

Stopped by a few stores again around 0730 today - funny how one can run low on normal things even during the end days of civilization. They had plenty of toothpaste, which is what I needed. Oddly, it was a pain in the butt to find a gallon of chocolate milk - 2 stores were out, and what I did find was too close-dated for me. Ugh.

All stores had TP, but not much - an hour or so at most at the volumes of the time, and they'd be out. No disinfectant liquids or wipes, pasta aisles decimated, but plenty of other food. I feel like I am going to gain 10 pounds during this mess. On a positive note, plenty of walkers and cyclists out, so there's what I need to do.

Had take out pizza for dinner, ordered a little extra to freeze just in case, tipped the cook who appeared to be there alone - these people deserve it and then some.

And RIP Kenny Rogers, maybe he knew when to fold them? I loved "The Gambler" when I was a little kid, such an epic song.

Worked my tax job today, had a pretty full schedule today with 6 appointments. Two showed up and I had two walk ins. We have taken the position that we will only take appointments to minimize the number of people in the office at one time and fully wipe down chairs, desk and equipment after every client.

On the way home traffic was lite for a Saturday evening but not by much. We went for a walk after I got home had about the same amount of people out and about for the temperature that it was.

Looking at countries and number of cases, Canada was not even on the list. Your media folks must be talking about some other news, while ours are ONLY talking about the virus.
We are usually the same ratio, with 10% of the population of the U.S. I believe we are a little below the 10% for this one..........but, that can change. It is on the news 24/7, and I am getting really tired of hearing about it. Have to tune out a lot...once or twice a day is enough.

in this case, it should dominate the news. It is a huge issue, with the potential to be cataclysmic. the situation is changing so rapidly you can't keep up. and there is almost literally nothing else going on. No sports, no nuttin.

unlike some of the other things the media has obsessed over in the past (OJ?), this one is the real deal.

Mike....just had this conversation last night with a friend. These stores are offering seniors special hours to shop.....mostly very early a.m. for an hour or so. If you think about it, it’s a marketing move. They’re trying to drum up traffic at their slowest times. I don’t think they’re doing much of a favor to anyone. Want to help the seniors? Let them shop alone from 10-11 a.m. Or, from 5-6 p.m. But, they don’t need the traffic then.

Same friend put the whole fumbling bumbling by the gov’t in perspective over the virus. His words....”he wants to lock the doors after the burglar is already inside.”

No, it isn't a marketing move, at least not mostly. Rightly or wrongly, the objective is to give seniors a store shopping experience that is less stressful, less crowded, and hopefully safer. Assuming shelves are still being restocked overnight, they also have the benefit of a fuller assortment. So how do you achieve that as a retailer? You can't do that in the middle of a shopping day because people are already in the store. Are you going to throw them out? Good luck with that, especially in these times. And it's not like what some stores here are doing by providing a sensory-friendly shopping experience for certain challenged people by reducing bright lights, turning off music and announcements, etc, which you can do any time. All of that adds up to moving this at the start of the business day. The place I used to work at is doing it too. In their case they have pushed back their general opening time to 11AM, so seniors can come in at 10AM. Their sales were up over 200% in the last week, so they don't need any extra marketing. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

I’m not sure that us seniors are any less germy than anyone else. You’re still lined up cheek to jowl, waiting to get in for at least half an hour. Trader Joe’s does it right. They put a red tape line out the door and down the sidewalk, measured out in 6 ft marks. They have sanitizers for the carts, and someone waiting outside to time how many people can be in the store at one time. Limit 2 items each. Very sensible. As for the many items they don’t sell I signed up for delivery service through Instacart. I’m not setting foot in a big store till things calm down, which may be awhile.

The local Meijer store had set the first hour for seniors. I arrived just at the end. There was a store rep, in a blazer with tie, out front thanking people for waiting. I inferred he had been blocking the under 65 crowd from going in during the seniors shopping hour. There were many folks inside on electric carts and others who were obviously debilitated still shopping as the younger crowd went in.

The store had already sanitized shopping carts and pushed them into the entry area for folks to grab. The sanitizing chemical had been allowed to dry on the handles, the proper method. The store itself, usually cleaner than Walmart and lots cleaner than Kroger, smelled and appeared very clean. Lots of seniors had toilet paper in their carts, 1 or 2 packages. I didn't need any. I did find macaroni elbows!!! had been stocked on the shelves and some were there.

On the other hand, early hour at Kroger was mobbed with the lot almost full. I drove past going to get coffee. The carts at kroger are junky and needing replacement or lots of care. The sanitizing at Kroger was spray bottles for customers to use on the handles when I went this morning after the first hour they opened. No sanitizer wipe pads. . If I owned stock in Kroger, I would dump it on any strength.

Up here the 6 ft distancing has become second nature for most (except for society's jackwagons, surprise surprise). and people are very sensitive now to limiting exposure to anything that is potentially contaminated.

Does anyone feel like looking at new cars? Isolating is taking any fun out of it for me. :(

I have been toying with the ideal of stopping by a dealership to do a little window shopping.
You just got a car. btw...how are you liking the BMW?
I got bored today so I took the Mustang out for a drive to look at cheap used cars to replace my son’s current Uber vehicle. Found a 2010 Impala with only 48k miles that was reduced $2k (about 25%). Don’t know why I’m doing this since replacement won’t be needed for at least a year. Just an excuse to go for a drive I guess.

I’ve also noticed that putting fresh gas in a previously stored car really improves performance. This morning as I was getting on the (empty) highway I goosed it a bit and actually caught rubber at about 35 before the TC nanny kicked in.

One area where the PNW is well-suited for the 6-foot rule - nobody here gets close to anyone anyway, so this is all pretty normal.

Safeway is doing the first hour thing too, only on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I have no problem with it, gives me greater chances of avoiding being behind someone who will just start to dig out their checkbook after their $300 order of TP, canned peas, and flour has been processed and then write out the check with the precision of a blueprint, or someone who can't figure out the self check-out machine B)

And a fun read about how a specific generation, of which I am a member, isn't finding the isolation measures too painful - although I will admit I'd like to go to the gym, go skating or play hockey, etc.

My local Kroger is spotless, but my local Meijer is a dump.
Sam’s Club has an employee handing out wipes at the door for your cart which is a good idea. The supermarket in the same plaza had an empty wipes dispenser that looked like it had been broken into. There was a sign on the door that said to please be patient, we’re doing the best we can.

On a positive note, the liquor and farm supply stores have each been named as “essential” and will remain open.

Mike, get there when they open and make sure you get to the “hot” items first.

I went on Friday and got there a few minutes after opening and people already were hitting things hard.

Thanks tjc for the heads up!

@abacomike try not to go at all! I’m sure you can get home delivery. With your health issues you need to stay home!

Our governor has just "upgraded" to a stay at home order effective Monday night IIRC. Not much different than what's currently happening for us. We'll likely still drive to get lunch at the drive through. I'll go to the grocery, Kroger/Walmart/Meijer, and stay away from others. My wife is at risk as are some of us here. Perhaps I will wear a mask.

A church had a service with a group in attendance a few days ago--the one along I75 south of Dayton with the pond in front and the religious statue rising out of the water. I wonder how many other group get togethers and how many bars and such were open over the weekend here in Ohio, not respecting the separation requests

NY Gov. Cuomo alluded to people meeting in groups and not staying their distance in his longgggggg press conference a couple days back.

I suspect this played in Ohio Gov DeWine/s decision. I certainly don't think he has been bumbling nor fumbling.

Have never been a fan of DeWine, but I give him props for this situation.

Suydam, I need milk, cheese, bread, coffee, frozen vegetables and entrees and meals, tissues, canned pineapple, tomatoes and bananas.

I tried to order for delivery, but they are so backed up it will take a week to get my order delivered and the can't guarantee frozen foods and dairy will be delivered in tact.

So it's me or I starve!
