Interesting website, I did check out Chicago, they start in Lincoln Park and take LSD into the downtown area. In my opinion the best way to enter the city.

When I first moved to Chicago in 1967, I was attending Graduate School at Roosevelt University and was teaching daytimes on the far west side. I lived off Sheridan Road (6700 N. Newgard) and would often pick up Lakeshore Drive when I was going down to Michigan Avenue to shop or have dinner. It is the most convenient route to Chicago from the north shore area.

The fake crowd noise with no real people in the stands was so loud it was impossible to make
out what the talkers were saying about the game.

I’ll be getting the vaccine just as soon as I’m permitted. May be a while though since I’m hearing that, at least here in WA, until there is more data on efficacy in immunocompromised patients, we are getting bumped down the list.

I've been wondering the same thing. I turn the sound down a lot anyway - even before the cardboard people. (I like the golden retriever one) Hearing those guys rant on and on gets old quickly. Sometimes their comments make you wonder if you are watching the same game.

The Eagles held on to beat the Saints. Jalen Hurts had a good game.

finally got everything organized and put away in the shed. Surprised at how much free space was left, just from reorganizing it and throwing out a small amount of stuff (blame the wife...). At least the garage bay is all emptied out. The princess is home for the rest of the year, so she appreciated having a space opened up for her to park in.

I'm just glad it is done before winter really hit.

Oh, I did buy a section of pegboard. Need to get the put up tomorrow so I can hang the yard equipment (weed whacker, edger, etc.) to get them out of the way on the floor.

I’ll answer that. With COVID 19 they knew exactly what they were dealing with. Now, with the flu, they are guessing what strain to battle.

I learned all this in the med school that wouldn’t accept me.

I’m all for changing the rules. I think it is ridiculous the way it is. The main reason meds are so damned expensive is because of how much they have to put out before even getting to FDA review. This instance, however, is overcompensation. I’d like a middle ground.

As it is, I’ll let other be the guinea pigs and sit tight.

That’s your choice but even though I seem to be doing OK health wise, because of my age I was told to get the vaccine when I bought up that subject about a month ago when I had a routine exam.

Anything that increases my chances of seeing the wedding of a grandchild or two, I’ll do it.

A long time ago back in March of 2020 the news media and government warned the public to stop buying and wearing masks. The World Health Org put out a tweet warning us that “masks can give you a false feeling of protection and can even be a source of infection when not used properly.”

I just read the Mayo Clinic link warning that getting the new vaccine may give you a false feeling of protection that you no longer need to wear a mask.

I don't work in pharma but I wonder if the FDA authorization for new COVID-19 vaccines may (like Fentanyl) cause some people to feel a false sense of well-being.

Certainly the end game is to end the pandemic and EVENTUALLY stop wearing masks after enough of the population has antibodies to Covid-19.

The “guinea pigs” were the thousands of volunteers who enrolled in the trials. I personally am thankful for them and am more than ready to be vaccinated because I am one of the “lucky” ones who is in the face of people all day - people who have tested Covid negative, positive and also emergencies who have not been tested.

Yes, the trial had guinea pigs, but that does not mean it is yet proven safe and effective. 2 mos is nothing. Any of the countless pharma lawsuits can tell you that.

I’m not saying y’all shouldn’t get it. Odds are it is at least relatively safe. I’m cautious when it comes to this stuff. Kind of like folks who work in the restaurant kitchen not wanting to eat there after seeing how it is made. Lol. And I have enough health problems that I like to limit what goes into me.

Anyway just curious what any of you think of tankless hot heaters.

About 6 weeks in with one, I’m not 100% sold.

Pros are obviously endless hot water.

Negatives are if you have a log run of pipe between your fixture and the water heater you are gonna wait awhile. I haven’t timed it yet, but it’s well over a minute in our master bathroom.

That’s something you can live with but another is the new HE appliances don’t play nice with it. Our dishwasher won’t clean dishes properly unless you have the “temp boost” function on because it doesn’t fill all one time. Our washer really doesn’t do warm because it doesn’t push enough water through the lines to full activate the water heater.

So, like anything there are trade offs for the endless supply.

I saw this problem discussed on Ask This Old House not long ago. Apparently your experience is not uncommon.

Rich Trethewey talked about a plumbing hack of sorts that involves running recirculating piping from those HW lines in distant locations in the house back to the WH. The recirculating pumps keep the water moving around in the piping loop and thus you have instant hot water. Of course that means the WH runs more often.

I suppose you could also add in another HW heater into the mix closer to those distant locations. Again, $$$.

I know in my little house I always run the hot water in the kitchen sink next to the DW before running it, and do the same in the laundry room before using the washing machine.

Me too. About 2-3 per day. Mostly 646 area codes but sometimes 212 also.

Phone scammers have mastered the art of spoofing call display numbers. So many of the numbers you see are complete fiction. One would hope the phone carriers would find a way to fix that.

I agree. Some of it can be done by the carrier....some by the phone manufacturers.

But, simple software settings on the phone that blocks “unknown” callers would be a good first step. From an iOS or Android perspective, this would not be hard. I’m thinking they’re trying to find a way to monetize the “feature”.

Spoofers are using made up company names for their robocalls. Instead of trying to sort spam calls by number (which the phone companies are trying to do), just do it by name. If the name is not in your list of recognized numbers, it’s blocked.

From a cell carrier perspective it would be a bit more involved, but doable (regardless of what the phone companies claim). They won’t do it until they are legislated to do it. They make money from “spoof” calls.

It basically has to flush the pipe out twice. Once to get the heater running and the second time for the now heated water to reach the fixture.

Some of the incoming calls blocked by our Sentry show "Spam" in the ID text. The carriers can ID lines making frequent calls and label them Spam somehow, and this would be independent of the spoofed telephone numbers the criminals are sending out on the call. That's where the responsibility could start.

BTW, I recall coming across talk that the spoofing software is available on your cell phone. I checked the playstore for Android and many offer privacy by spoofing your number so people can't return your call if you want to hide your real number along with apps to spook and make fake calls.

Good vid. Doubtful I would do any of that! Good tip on running the water first before washer and DW. We’ve always done it on the DW but do it now on the washer as well. That does help but still if the unit stops filling even for a little bit the water heater shuts off.

Again these are minor issues, but figured I would throw it out there in case anyone was planning an install.

I looked at tankless about 6-7 years ago when I replaced my last water heater. Even the company who sold it (who also sold the traditional water heaters) was ambivalent about tankless for the very reasons you guys point out. Dishwashers aren’t as effective (unless you have one that heats its own water) and long(er) runs tend to take a long time for heated water to get to the faucet.

Those things plus, they tend to cost a lot more than traditional water heaters.

No disrespect @tjc78 but I’d have to pass. Maybe for a smaller home, with appliances that heat their own water? Perhaps. The flip side, maybe you save a bit in water. But, down in the area where @kyfdx and I reside, water is cheap and abundant.

It has to flush out the line (at least partly) before it even fires up. Then you have a few a seconds before it produces the hot water, and once you have hot water the line has to completely flush out again. Combine all this with a 1.75 GpM shower head and a really long run and you are waiting a good while for the water.

I'd say you are going to wait about the same either way, maybe a few seconds longer with tankless.
Our shower is actually beyond the far side of the house from the water heater(over one of the garages.
I run the water in the sink and wait until it is warm before I step in the shower.

Email from IU Health. I just clicked through and chose hospital that I work at.. Click first available day and then choose time. I was in first round due to my job.

We had tankless from Navien in our old townhome. The tank was on the ground floor in our garage and getting water up to our master on the third floor was easily 1 minute or more. Made me crazy. But once it was running, it was great!

My parents installed a tankless water heater a number of years ago. I'll agree that it does take longer for the shower to heat up. Lately, there have been issues with it shutting down, usually in the middle of a shower (no bueno!); we've had a guy come out and look at it, and he had to perform some sort of tune up on it.

Need to check with our tenants to see if that resolved the problem.

It does exist, my Galaxy has it. It's a do not disturb feature that will block all calls but will allow you to let in calls from your contacts list. I use that on my phone. The phone will let me know if a call is coming in but the phone will not ring or vibrate, so unless I am looking at the phone when the call come it I miss them entirely.

dialing *67 then your phone number will also block your number if you don't want to give away your number when you call. You can also use something like Google Voice and use one of their numbers and that's also a good way to give people a call back number without giving your number.

Yes, iOS has that too. I enabled it on my iPhone but discovered a problem. If you get a legit call - say, from a contractor you have asked to set up an appointment (my example) or let's say, a doctor you were referred to and who is not someone you spoke with before, those calls do not make the phone ring. You have to hope they leave a voice mail. Because of that I ended up turning it off.

When the person answers. Tell them you are interested. But they have to answer one question first...

Ask them “what number they are calling from?”

Since these idiots randomize their calling and spoof numbers. They go apoplectic. I have even given them hints. I will tell them the area code. Or some other hint. I e ven had a guy guessing. I would say “The first digit is between 2 and 6” let them guess. If they get it right or wrong, tell them they got it right. Keep it going. Until the last digits. Then say “I’m sorry, thats incorrect” and hang up.

Yes, they will know they have a good number. They are going to call anyway, so why not have some fun.

Re:spoof calls.
I get numbers only a few digits off mine, guess they try and fool you into thinking it’s local. I also get a call every night from Purdue University. They try all kinds of BS. I get all kinds of wild calls on my company cell phone too. I do tend to pick up more on that phone since I’m more apt to hear from people I don’t have stored.

Anyone find themselves using the phone less and talking more on MS teams during the day? Most of team calls me on that if they see I’m available. Great technology.

She says "what is the make/model/year of your car?" "You called me and said my warranty was about to expire, so you must know." Short silence, then she repeats her question. "Well, OK, it is a 1967 Dodge Coronet." Pause ... "do you have any other car?" "Nope. that's my only car. what plans do you offer?" "sorry, but we can't cover that. bye."

And here I thought it was a scam. Guess they really are trying to sell a warranty of some sort and her software had no clue how to deal with mine.

You can install a crossover line from your hot to cold water pipe, near the far away fixture. You install the pump on the hot water line, just before that. If you rig it to a switch, you flip the switch when you enter the bathroom, and it pulls the water from the hot water line, evacuating the water that's cooled in the line, in just a few seconds. Then switch off.

We thought about doing this, even with our tank heater. due to the 45' run from the tank to the MBR.

The pump is cheap enough, but the electrical/plumbing work makes it pricey. In the end, we passed.
