Even though I didn’t have any issues with the CVT in my 13 Accord I am still not convinced of their longevity. From what I’ve read they are expensive to replace as repair is generally not an option.
From my reading Honda makes their own in house CVT and it’s trouble free. Same with Toyota who uses Aisin CVTs. The problem is CVTs made by Jatco, a former subsidiary of Nissan which makes them for many different brands. Those were noted as unreliable, at least a few years ago.
I’m hearing that they are almost impossible to repair and most shops just drop a new one in for $6500. Ouch!
That’s why I’d be leery of buying any car with a CVT. Honda’s might be better but will it go 250k miles like a regular Honda automatic? Might be expensive to find out.
My understanding is that a CVT currently will not last as long as a automatic transmission. This will more than likely change as the technology advances but as of now it doesn't last as near as long. If you are leasing it's no big deal but if you plan on keeping a car a long time it is a deal breaker for me.
Also consider that not every mechanic knows how to service a CVT, so taking it to your friendly neighborhood mechanic for transmission work might not be an option.
The days of your trusted indie working on trannies is long gone even the shifting types. If they are honest they tell you to drive on down to a local tranny shop in the area. The non-trusty ones tell you to drop it off and they’ll look at it and they’ll get back to you with an estimate. In reality they drive it to a local tranny shop and get an estimate. A classic case of a middle man.
When a car is under warranty the dealer does it. Out of warranty they may also drive it to the local tranny shop if they take pity on you and can’t hold a straight face giving you a price for them doing it. If it’s done differently in your area you live in the most honest area doing car repairs.

My indie guy never did tranny work beyond fluid changes, now he does very little at all. That’s why I have my indie tranny guy as well.
With the number of speeds in the latest cars today (8, 10 and maybe more) it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if you walked into a tranny shop you’d see the guy going back and forth from the lift to his desk where he’d be looking at a video to see how to make the adjustments/part change outs. The price you’re paying has to include his computer time and replacements costs for new shoes. Maybe even costs for replacing some flooring.

I watched a YT video today that was sponsored by the ATRA(Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association). Will need to look some place up for the Mustang. 1st and 2nd gears have a lot of slip, 3rd and 4th are fine.
Is that the AOD-E transmission in your car? If it is rather than the older AOD, that’s one of Ford’s early electronic controlled trannys. It could just be a glitchy sensor.
I had a similar problem on the early Chevy electronic transmission in my cargo van but a few cheap sensors fixed the problem.

I set up the new TCL 55R635 TV and have to say it is incredible compared to what it replaced. My space and setup really can’t take anything bigger (I’d have loved to get a 65” but it won’t fit my space) so this is about as good as I can get. The main option with roughly equivalent ratings was a Sony X900H for about $500 more.
The sharpness of the picture and presumably all of the other features I can’t begin to understand just make it a joy to watch. It has image processing that is fun to play with. I was watching a bit of Citizen Kane and I have never seen an old B&W movie that looked like that, just as if it was produced recently. I tested a DVD of an old Mannix episode and have never seen it look so good. I watched an episode of “Flack” on Prime and was playing with some of the settings and discovered you could make it look like live video if you wanted to - the “soap opera effect” I’ve read about but never really understood before. It was interesting but I decided I preferred the more movie-like presentation I’m used to.

Nah his car is the old throttle valve controlled AOD. Very rare they slip in 1st or 2nd. Typically they go when the crappy plastic grommet for the TB cable fails. Pressure drops too low and the OD band gets burned.
Thanks @jipster Honda World is middle of the pack on discount but doc fee is $644. I know out the door matters but it seems the high doc fee stores are not competitive .
I looked at my 2020 Accord EXL sales receipt. $599 "processing fee". I still think it all works out about the same.. High doc fee... low price. High price....low doc fee.. I put $150 in the otd price for the processing fee and worked from there. I was $26,070 for a Certified 2020 Accord with 1,200 miles on their "no haggle" price, which was around $26,700. OTD was around $28,000. Sticker was around $31,200. That included dealer installed options of mud flaps, all weather floor mats for the cabin AND trunk. Mrs Jip liked the all weather trunk mat...something about it being easier to dispose of a body (mine I guess) Extended warranty added $1,600. But the certified warranty that came with it was much better than Hondas.
I haven't seen this year's model Odyssey. But I remember an Odyssey I looked at about 10 plus years ago at the new car show, and being awe struck at the interior. Looked like the interior from a luxury automobile. Good luck with your search. ..

I was playing with it a bit during the golf on CBS yesterday but got a bit of strangeness so I need to keep tinkering.
What really got me was that non-Bluray DVD of Mannix which I watched last night after just testing it earlier. Not only was the image better than any standard 4:3 image I've ever seen from that 15 y-o machine but you could see details and shadows that were invisible previously on other screens. Obviously there's some kind of wizardry happening. Just incredible.

At first I was wondering why do you want a TV to take off faster with "Sport" mode, and then I realized what you meant. It's like I went into Dick's looking for tennis shoes. The kid came over and asked if he could help me. I said you have 150 pairs of sports shoes, I don't see any tennis shoes. He said, "Do you mean to play tennis in?". I said "No, I like to wear them when I am watching tennis on TV". It seems they cater more to golfers and runners, oh well.
It looks like Best Buy isn’t going to drop prices significantly on any of the 75” TVs I’ve been considering. Ditto for the Panasonic DP-UB820 4K Blu-Ray player. Last year BB cut $150 off the price, this year the discount is only $100. As for other local options, the HTS dealers are apparently not interested in selling anything if they aren’t able to tack on a ridiculous “installation” fee.

I can't recall the last time we used our blu-ray. It has gone the way of CDs for us. "oh, what? I gotta stand up and walk over there to put a disc in? heck no. Don't remember where I read it but believe the best deals are on the 82" TVs. And don't get me started on installation and set up pricing.
I paid Best Buy $200 for a wall mounted set up but I changed my mind and went instead with a table top option. A simple table top set up is only $50. So far, in over two months BB has not yet refunded the $150 excess charge.

At home I buy from an indie tennis store...his knowledge is definitely worth any extra cost....sometimes his price is lower. He told me to get New Balance 806s, they are very rounded which is good for a bunion, and I get a 2E. I just checked the 1006 and it seems to be a slight upgrade, and is available in 2E so I'd give that a try if he agrees.
In Florida it is a long ways to get to a designated tennis store, and they don't carry much so |I order from Tennis Warehouse or one of those. These are my 806's; I checked the 1006 and in the U.S they are the same price as the 806, I like the blue and the black, 806 comes only in white If my tennis guy says it would work I would definitely go with the 1006 when we can play again. We wanted to watch ER.....15 seasons about 25 shows a season, equals about 330 episodes. It was on Netflix in the U.S., we would be all set if we were in Florida like we are supposed to be. Not available on Netflix Canada so we thought we would buy ourselves a Christmas/Hanukkah Gift and buy the set on DVDs. It is kind of quaint the way you have to push a button, put the disc in, and then it says it is loading, and it finally says LOADED. Reminds me of the good old days
As I sit in my home office I look out to my back yard where the recently fallen snow is pristine with just a set of rabbit tracks going across my back yard where they suddenly stop at a spot where the snow is pretty much disturbed. There are no other tracks in the area. RIP bunny rabbit.

I love the simplicity and relatively good quality streaming offers, but Blu-Ray has such better picture and sound. You may not notice on just a TV but in a full theater setup it’s much more noticeable.
In Louisville my wife and I buy our athletic shoes exclusively from Swag’s. I’d rather pay a bit more and deal with salespeople who know their products.

I am trying to broaden your horizons (and knowledge.........want you to know about more things than deli sandwiches).
In Louisville my wife and I buy our athletic shoes exclusively from Swag’s. I’d rather pay a bit more and deal with salespeople who know their products.
we started going a few towns over to a store called the running company. Cater to serious runners, and organize running outings, etc. Superb customer service. And the prices are really not bad for what you get (not cheap, but they don't sell the low line stuff you get at chain stores). And of course, they know what they are doing and how to fit!
Missed it last summer of course, but I always find something at their sidewalk sales in July (they are in a cute historic downtown area that has a sidewalk sales day for the whole town). Scored some great 1/2 price deals on what I assume are last years styles. Which is fine by me, since I am last year's style too.
Indie sports stores and shoe stores can make a huge difference. I don't mind paying more because their knowledge can be worth a lot more than a few bucks. And it is good to support them so they will be there if you need them.

Same here. I don’t know what you call small but by audiophile standards my soundbar with a 12 inch sub is pretty small. Nothing like that washing machine size job that we saw last week.

Nah his car is the old throttle valve controlled AOD. Very rare they slip in 1st or 2nd. Typically they go when the crappy plastic grommet for the TB cable fails. Pressure drops too low and the OD band gets burned.
Should be cheap to rebuild then compared with the more complex designs.
At least it’s not a CVT. I drove a 2020 Kia today with 5500 miles on the clock 10 miles to one of our offices and almost didn’t make it. Everything started out fine but within a few miles the CEL lit up and acceleration started feeling sloppy. A few more miles and there was a definite slip with the rpms going up to red line every time I stepped on the gas. By the time I arrived the car would barely make it up the incline into the lot.
The office wanted me to take the car back until I explained that it was unsafe to drive in that condition. Offices hate getting stuck with a car they can’t rent.
This validated my decision to buy a 2019 Soul with the conventional 6 speed instead of the 2020.

I watched a YT video today that was sponsored by the ATRA(Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association). Will need to look some place up for the Mustang. 1st and 2nd gears have a lot of slip, 3rd and 4th are fine.

I have read that Kia is having issues with the CVT in the Soul and Seltos. Very unfortunate.

I can't recall the last time we used our blu-ray. It has gone the way of CDs for us. "oh, what? I gotta stand up and walk over there to put a disc in? heck no. I'll just push a button and stream something."
My son and I like to give my primary 7.1 setup a good workout. The basement 5.1 system is better suited for streaming. And before you ask, I still listen to CDs on my Rotel RCD-855 as well.
I used to have a better setup but we just didn’t feel it was worth the effort when we moved to this house. Now we watch movies using just 3.1. The humanity!
Yeah, same with us. Soundbar with a small sub.
Same here. I don’t know what you call small but by audiophile standards my soundbar with a 12 inch sub is pretty small. Nothing like that washing machine size job that we saw last week.

Sympathies to the east coast folks getting the storm Wanda or whatever the name.
It came through here yesterday with a couple of inches, then a little drizzle, then a little overnight, and now tonight some accumulating flurries. But I had read the predictions of once again a BIG snowfall to the east.

I was thinking the same thing. That would be a good mixing machine. Just pour what you want, set it on top and fire it up. Should be able to mix a dozen drinks at least with that beast. The perfect helper for a Super Bowl gathering. Hope he invites us.

For future reference, a VPN will let you watch your US Netflix while in Canada. Google it for instructions.
Thanks Q. I did read that when trying to figure out what to do but took the easy way out....when I get a chance I'll check that out.

Hey guys. Thought I'd chime in with an update. First of all, my fleet of 5 vehicles is down to 4. My 2008 Mercury Mariner, my son was driving, was rear ended by a pickup truck back in October. It sustained enough damage that my insurance company declared it totalled. My son was shooken up. Had some whiplash, so taken to the hospital for a cat scan. Had some soft tissue injury, seems to be o.k. But still keeping an eye on things. The 80 year old gentleman didn't have much to say, after my son called and I arrived in the scene...which was the dreaded Gene Synder Expressway for those familiar. Traffic had slowed down, and the guy didn't recognize the situation until he had slammed into the back of my car. Kentucky is a no fault state, so I settled with my Insurance company for $3,950. Which seemed fair at the time.
My son did a good job of getting the other drivers information. Photos of his truck, licence plate, insurance card and drivers license. But, for some reason my insurance company had a hard time tracking the guy's insurance company down. Finally find out a couple weeks ago that the other drivers insurance company (Dairyland) is saying he does not have insurance with them. So at this point I'm looking at getting an attorney. Any advice?
I miss that 2008 Mariner. It was a nice car, drove well had been in the family since new. Was planning on using it in bad weather, so I could keep the Accord in the garage, and as a back-up to my other vehicles should they need repair.
Glad no serious injuries.
Shouldn’t the police or State Troopers be advised that the guy that rear ended your son had no insurance? I thought insurance is required by law in most States, if not all States.
Thanks. The cops wouldn't even come to the accident site when my son called. They said since both cars had been able to pull off the expressway, and there was no serious injury, they would have to handle the matter themselves. My insurance company had said, on a previous call, that if the other party didn't have insurance they would try to use whatever leverage they could for the guy to reimburse them. So, I'm assuming contacting the police. Not sure how much the police not showing up to write up a report will hurt our case.
Police not showing up for an accident is unconscionable but unfortunately becoming common. So far in my area they always respond to an accident. I think if I thought they wouldn’t come I’d claim to have passed out from a head injury or something to get them out of the donut shop.
I would think the likelihood of the police showing up to a minor fender bender is inversely proportional to the amount of crime in the area. If the police are very busy then they are going to the more serious calls and leave those in minor accidents fend for themselves.
In short if your police routinely dont show up for minor accidents consider moving.
I'm sure you mean "speeding tickets" and not "crime." I mean, what else would they be busy with? Let's get real. I have found, that perhaps a greater allocation of enforcement goes to traffic when there's literally nothing else to do (such as in a low crime small town), but it definitely doesn't go to serving the public like showing up to an accident scene to do a police report (unless someone is hurt or died).
Can’t say the police don’t respond to accidents near me. Yesterday we passed an accident (looked like a multi car chain reaction) and there were more police cars than cars involved.
Likely that injuries, death, or at least a major traffic snarl on a highly traveled route were involved. Try calling them about a fender bender on a lightly traveled remote residential street.
Around here yes you will get them to come for minor fender benders on a lightly traveled residential street. But I also know that in certain areas in the city of Chicago they won't because the police have more important things to do, and it's not traffic enforcement.
IMHO Chicago isn't particularly more corrupt than other cities, they just were not good at avoiding getting caught. Other City officials seem to be better at hiding the motivations.

Glad that you are enjoying your new TCL tv and just in time for the Super Bowl too. Don't know if you have tried the sports mode but the image is crisp and life-like. Enjoy!
Dicks Sporting had only 2 or 3 pair of designated tennis shoes last time I checked...15 years ago. Worthwhile to buy from an individual tennis store, Tennis Warehouse, or Amazon. If still in the market I'd recommend the New Balance 1006 tennis shoe. I "love" em.
Up here I have to play in a bubble, and all indoor sports facilities have been closed.
Use to be a Nike guy. New Balance blows them out of the water. I had the 806... x2. Good shoe. The 1006 is lighter, more plush and comfortable....but still supportive. But, they are narrower in the toe, so you may need to go 1/2 a size bigger to fit that bunion of yours.
@roadburner The Swags on Old Third Street road is only a couple miles from where I grew up. But I suspect you shop at one of their other locations. Great place to get knowledgeable sales staff.
@oldfarmer50 My brother bought a 2020 Kia Soul in the summer. He bought an extended warranty, and his friend is the general manager at the dealership, so hopefully he's taken care of should any problems arise with that cvt.

As I mentioned before, I work during the spring and summer as a groundskeeper at a baseball field. A few times a season I am greeted in the morning with a pile of feathers, and less often a pile of rabbit fur, in the outfield.
I’m surprised you can find stock on those 75” TVs at Best Buy. My 15 year old printer finally gave up the ghost and I went to 2 Best Buy stores to buy another. Neither had stock. They said they’d gladly order one for me, though. If I had known that, I could have stayed home and ordered from Amazon.

It came through here yesterday with a couple of inches, then a little drizzle, then a little overnight, and now tonight some accumulating flurries. But I had read the predictions of once again a BIG snowfall to the east.

Storm started here last night and will continue into tomorrow morning.
At least the snow is the light stuff.
I'll have to take a picture of the Explorer if I can find it.

IMHO Chicago isn't particularly more corrupt than other cities, they just were not good at avoiding getting caught. Other City officials seem to be better at hiding the motivations.
@jmonroe I'm waiting for the discussion to cycle back to vacuum cleaners. I have a few dozen Kirby stories to retell.
