I can't recall the last time we used our blu-ray. It has gone the way of CDs for us. "oh, what? I gotta stand up and walk over there to put a disc in? heck no. I'll just push a button and stream something."
My son and I like to give my primary 7.1 setup a good workout. The basement 5.1 system is better suited for streaming. And before you ask, I still listen to CDs on my Rotel RCD-855 as well.
I used to have a better setup but we just didn’t feel it was worth the effort when we moved to this house. Now we watch movies using just 3.1. The humanity!
Yeah, same with us. Soundbar with a small sub.
Same here. I don’t know what you call small but by audiophile standards my soundbar with a 12 inch sub is pretty small. Nothing like that washing machine size job that we saw last week.

Being a Troglodyte, I use what comes with the TV.
Good word - Troglodyte I had to look it up), that would be me too, I don't need enhanced sound on a TV (a person who is regarded as being deliberately ignorant or old-fashioned.)
I’ve called you nicer things than that yet you got all irate with me when I did. Go figure.

I was nice to you, I gave you credit even though you have a puny 12 inch sub

One reason I put together a couple of decent HT systems is because with a few exceptions the local movie theaters had mediocre sound systems. My son agreed and also liked the fact that at the RB Movieplex here are no dimwits talking, phoning, or otherwise making noise. The only downside is that we can’t watch anything at reference levels once my wife goes to bed- because the sub rattles things at the other end of the house(and yes, it’s properly calibrated using Audyssey MultEQ). Now with all of the COVID hysteria I think that having an HTS is absolutely essential as most theaters are closed- many permanently.
We are lucky as half the theater room is under our breakfast area which has no second story above it. You can hear the rumbling slightly in my Mom’s room across the house, but it doesn’t bother her enough we can’t use it. I don’t know if the previous owners added extra insulation or not. They did pre-wire for the projector but weren’t using the room as a theater.
I also agree with the audio in the theaters. It’s never that great other than being loud. I’ve always been into home theater even going back to the first Dolby surround receivers (no center channel) and VHS HiFi. Much different then.
Ahhhh.... VHS.... VCR's. Brings back the memories. I remember Panasonic was the go-to with Hi-Fi VCR's at the end of their life cycle. Who here had one?
I was still a kid, but my dad was always one to have the latest and greatest. Super-VHS? Was that what it was? I think that was relatively short-lived. No way I'll recall the brand.

First time I heard of laser discs was watching Tom Snyder and Willard Scott demonstrating technology of 1980 on the Tomorrow Show. Tom and Willard start the demo at 3:19 into the video. And the world's smallest camcorder at 6:12. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y94-s2qIS6M It was fun to watch even then.
A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing.

Yes. That was actually one he avoided, though. He said "when the rental store has LDs as readily available as tapes, I'll get a player." That never happened, of course.
DVDs came to our house when I bought him a player as a gift. And I recall Tombstone was the first DVD I bought "for him."

Years ago there was a young single guy in our department who was an avid outdoorsman. To keep his shooting eye calibrated he found a farmer not too far from here who told him, “you can come onto my property anytime you want and shoot as many of those ‘ground pigs’ as you have bullets. I’m tired of them ruining my crops”.

Depends on the shade of brown. A light tan or beige I like but dark brown I’d have to see it first. We were next to a Toyota pick up the other day which was a medium brown and we couldn’t decide it it was ugly or beautiful.

Andre, I think my current basement Sony is an SXRD. The DLP engine I think? A slimmer projection with a light engine and a bulb. Starting to get dimmer so I think it’s going out again. Replaced bulb twice over the years. Engine once under warranty. Next failure, it’s on the curb.

Toyota calls that Quicksand. It's a great color on the Tacoma
Farmer, most likely I am buying it. But you know that around here, plans are never final until the ink is dry.
My son is already sniffing around it. Offered to take it in December when his lease is up, as a winter beater/daily driver, and get a sports car to go with it. I’m sure he expects a family discount. Sucker.

Can copy to iTunes or Apple Music. Or just put on a USB flash drive. Lots of options. I’m just way out of date on current technology.
If we say "bungalo" in Florida no one knows what we are talking about, even if they are seniors. Bungalo is an English word. In Canada we usually call a one story small squarish house a bungalo, when a one story gets elongated it is called a ranch style, or possibly one story.
They are both basically rectangles. On a ranch the long side faces the street, on a bungalow, the narrow side faces the street. Bungalow, sometimes called a shotgun house. You could shoot a shotgun straight through the front door and out the back door.
A ranch is longer across the front....but never heard of a shotgun house but then guns are basically illegal in Canada, so the term might not sound good.
I guess those firearms still work whether legal or not. 1,073 shooting homicides in Canada 2014-2018. About the same as one month in Chicago.

Our new 2020 CRV has no CD player! What do I do with my collection of over 300 CD's? The CRV has Apple Play and I've heard that I can download CD's to my Apple IPhone. I guess this old dog is going to have to learn some new tricks! To say the controls of the CRV are complicated is a huge understatement! Happy I retired when I did!
Yep, download iTunes and then load your CDs into it. Then transfer them to your phone.

That awful color doesn’t knock the value down a bit?
I like it! But Manheim does project a $360 hit for brown. Brings it to $30.6k from $31k. I find they seem to be a little optimistic compared to actual results, so I project high $29k to maybe $30k on it.
Coming in VERY late here but that color kills that Mercedes.
They used to call brown cars...." Stay around brown". Meaning they will sit on your lot for a LONG time.
Just gotta find the right buyer.
Depends on the shade of brown. A light tan or beige I like but dark brown I’d have to see it first. We were next to a Toyota pick up the other day which was a medium brown and we couldn’t decide it it was ugly or beautiful.
Looks like something the Army would use in the desert.
The Taliban love those things. They hate western stuff but love cell phones and Toyota Trucks.
Let's make it easier to compare, Canada has 1/10th of the population of the U.S. Total homicides by guns in the U.S. in 2017.....39,773 Total homicides by guns in Canada in 2017......266. Guns are basically illegal....except like shot guns for farmers or hunters at times of the year. You can go to a shooting range under lock and key. There are homicides, robberies, arguments, killing a cop, random shooting, etc., most are gang related.

If you want shock value statistics use Albany NY. We have a higher per capita rate than Chicago and similar strict gun control laws.

Actually the total number of homicides in the US 19 2017 was just over 17,000. The almost 40K figure is total gun deaths of which the majority are suicides.

Thank you for posting that. The misuse of statistics by some groups is one of my pet peeves.
VCRs? Yeah Panasonic made some nice units. I had a high end Sony that actually died right around the same time I bought my first DVD player.
First DVD player was a Toshiba, first disc was Terminator 2. This was late 1997.
I can’t remember first CD, but the first player I had was an LXI from Sears. My mom (Santa?, lol) bought it for me in 1985 as an Xmas present at 7 years old. I still have it packed away and it worked last time I tried it except for a sticky loading drawer.

Right, I tried to do it properly but missed that. Surprisingly, 2/3rds of the 40000 were suicides, and in Canada the total suicides were 80%. Also, 17000 is much better than 40000, but 266 is still way lower per capita if the population is 1/10th.
we have a whole lot of DVDs downstairs still. I should count them but must be over 100.
I have WAY TOO MANY just taking up space. I believe my 2 cabinets each hold 100-125, and those are overflowing, plus 3 other cubbies. I’d guess 350 or so. Maybe 100 or so of those are ... ummm ... backup copies of originals no longer in my possession? Yeah, that’s it.

I never had Laserdisc, SVHS, Minidisc or HDDVD.
I flirted with digital copying on VHS tapes for a while. It was a “cludgy” process, but I was successful. Of course, you couldn’t play them in your car, which was the main reason I used to tape my tunes.
First CD player was a Magnavox (who was owned by Phillips...who in turn developed CD technology with Sony).
Laser disks were a bit before my time (or, they were out there but I couldn’t convince my parents to pony up for the technology).
MiniDisk and SVHS really never held much interest as they were niche players, at best.
However, I was knee deep in the HDDVD vs Blu-Ray tech fight. I chose to put my bet on Blu-Ray. I do know some people who have a sizable HDDVD collection and at least two HDDVD players (one as a spare). Good luck finding any of those, today. They offered no benefit over Blu-Ray, so no need for them.
It's an interesting and fun exercise to make such predictions, but who knows when, where and how. If I had to guess, we have about 1 correct prediction of the future tech per about thousand incorrect (or perhaps a million). "End of ICE drivetrain" sounds really exciting (for some), but there are plenty of other machines (planes, construction, agriculture, mining, etc.) that will likely be powered by ICE for much longer. There are some attractive qualities in electric motor (supposed low maintenance, high durability), but there are also some really unattractive ones, too (low portability of fuel). There is likelihood ICE will hang on for much longer than anticipated, if say oil gets cheap enough due to lower demand, assuming EVs will finally start displacing ICE vehicles in numbers. There may be several swings back and forth before it really settles. It's not like you can make just diesel and plastics from oil, you need to find "home" for those lighter factions. A chemist may be able to tell us if there are alternative uses for them that could absorb that surplus, if/when it occurs.
They aren’t going anywhere. Even if all (or most) new sales become electric, it will take a long time to retire the existing fleet of cars. And some applications probably never can switch over.
I could see a rule of EV or plug in with gas back up motors only though.

Maybe the future of ICE will follow a path just as unexpected (and unpredictable) as with any other technology. Remember when the future of nuclear power promised energy which would be too cheap to meter? The Next Big Thing always turns out to be the most acceptable compromise which gets the most bang for the buck.
