    Can openers?

“You have reached the end of the Internet. Please turn around.”

    Oh, hell no.

We haven't talked about toaster ovens, room humidifiers, or myriad other small electronic devices that are scattered about our homes.
Funny you mentioned toaster ovens. We never knew what to do with one. We bought one one time, it sat on the counter for a few years, and I threw it away - unused.

I'm sure there some wonderful things it will do. I just never found out what they were.

Toaster oven acts as an oven, warms up and heats faster than a big oven and is used as an oven for smaller items. And it can be used as a toaster....one advantage is you can toast larger bulkier items but the disadvantage is that a toaster makes much better toast. It is also neater looking than say a toaster, and especially if this one appliance can do the work of two.

Electric can openers were a huge thing when they first came out, everyone had to have one.....and people relied on canned foods a lot more in those days.....it looks like some people still do :p
They were like the latest state of the art invention, that everyone could afford. Now they just take up valuable real estate space on the counter. The one we had about 40 years ago was olive green to match the appliances.

We don't have a toaster, so I use our toaster oven to toast bagels(has bagel setting to only toast from the top) or english muffins.

We bought a fancy-schmancy toaster oven from Calphalon a couple of years ago. Took a while to adjust the settings so the toast and bagels were perfectly done. It also bakes, warms food up and does other things that I've not bothered to learn about.

The toaster was binned when this thing invaded our counter space.

Our kitchen sink got plugged up about 4 times in the last 12 years....it might be fixed now that they put in a larger return pipe and put it on a greater angle.
One plumber said add some Mr Plumber once a month just to clear out any build up. He said once it is plugged up Mr Plumber stuff is useless, it is only good for keeping the pipes cleared if used before any build up.
The last plumber said never use Mr Plumber, it is hard on the pipes and will corrode them.
The last guy was always honest, does work for less than I would expect, has saved us money etc....but, it seems more logical to me to pour some Mr Plumber down the drain once a month.
    Any thoughts?

Now for my 2 cents worth: (this will get a little long so scroll when you’ve had enough)

@snakeweasel was right about drain cleaners being harmful to pipes. However, if your house was built in the late 60s and later the drain pipes are probably plastic, so, home drain cleaners will not harm them. Years ago ABS plastic (black in color) was used, today at least in my area they now want you to use PVC which is white in color and from what a few master plumbers have told me the PVC is a little stronger physically and it is cheaper. Kinda like the best of both worlds. Our resident plumber guy, @nyccarguy, might be able to provide more info about this but I know that plumbers in my are use PVC now. ABS is still OK but i was told that it is being phased out. @stickguy also provided good info when he said something like, ‘if the pipes are done right’, which to me means they are the proper size and have the proper slope so that it drains to the main vertical stack without backing up on improperly sloped horizontal runs.

Now I’ll put together both of what I just mentioned:

When my Son and I did our first flip, there was a wall that divided the kitchen from an all purpose room on the other side of the wall from the kitchen. Since we gutted both the kitchen and the all purpose room that had a washer and dryer along with a toilet and an 18 inch sink, we had a free hand to do what we wanted to do. The all purpose room would become a full bath with 5 foot shower pan, a toilet of course and a 42 inch vanity. The washer and dryer were moved to another spot in the house (that was a BIG job because a new drain line had to be installed for that. Supply lines are easy in comparison.

Like I said the wall was completely open on both sides and I noticed that the drain line for the small sink in the all purpose room had literally no slope. So we cut that out from the stack back to where the new vanity would be placed. One day when the next door neighbor came by to see how things were going, he was a DIYer of sorts himself and had the same house. He liked the idea that we were replacing the 1 1/2 copper drain line with plastic because those houses had a lot of problems with that sink drain because of the bad slope and everyone used a lot of drain cleaners over the years (house was built in the mid 60s). When I cut out the old copper drain line I could see that the wall thickness on the bottom 1/3 of the pipe was VERY thin compared to the rest of the pipe. At one point where I touched it, it wrinkled like aluminum foil and I’m not exaggerating. So, if a snake was ever put into that pipe it was a goner. I guess you could say we got to it just in time.

People look down at products today that are made of plastic but as far as I’m concerned plastic for drain lines is the best thing since sliced bread.

How many of you guys made it this far? :D

made it to the end! I agree about plastic drain pipes. Cast iron, not good stuff.

I also am a fan of the plastic (pex?) supply lines too. Just read a post about a local neighborhood where nearly all the houses are having pinhole leak problems in their copper water lines. that is not a good thing!

My Mom’s house had cast iron and lead drain lines. By the time it was sold everything but a little bit of cast iron was replaced with PVC

PVC is nice except in two story homes you can really hear the drain when someone flushes a toilet.

Yep, PEX is very good. Plumbers turned their nose up with that stuff when it first came out but a lot of them use it now. @nyccarguy can probably tell us how it’s received at his place. When we use the PEX we try to use sweeping bends as much as possible so we don’t have to use more fittings than necessary. Not to save a buck but to eliminate possible leak points. Of course you have to use some fittings but we do our best to avoid them. When we got into this we bought a good PEX crimp tool. Cost over a hundred bucks but it seemed better built that some of the cheaper ones we saw. It’s paid for itself many times over already. No sense buying cheap tools. I’ve never believed in that and when you’re somewhat in the biz it’s even more important.

FWIW, i just got off the phone with Son #1 and he’s closing on flip #3 tomorrow afternoon. The dumpster will be delivered soon after that with demo scheduled for Saturday morning. All of you guys are welcome. Pizza and beer is on us but only if I think you’re worth it.

Flip #3 is a two story (flips 1 and 2 were ranches), so when we open a wall and we see a drain stack we’re going to put sound deadening insulation in those cells. We’re not going to go looking for drain stacks but when we see one, and I know we will, it will get insulation.

Thanks for the info.....brand new pipe in this case since the plumber replaced it with a larger pipe. He said when the house was built 14 years ago they probably put a young inexperienced kid on the job, the inspector misses a lot especially when given a gift of a large bottle of Crown Royal and the proper size pipe wasn't installed the first time around. I didn't know plastic was that much better....better than copper?

Copper is only for supply lines. Drain lines used to be cast iron, but now are hard plastic. The plastic supply lines is (I think) a newer product that seems popular these days.

Holmes doesn’t know how to repair anything. All he wants to do is rebuild an entire house because of a water leak. You have to know when to stop. He’s good at what he does but he does way too much. But it’s TV so people want to see how to change light bulbs and replace all the sewer lines in a couple episodes. If it wasn’t working he’d be gone.

I am not a fan of Holmes. As JM says, he takes the extreme view on every problem he encounters and seems to have unlimited budgets. Now he has his kid (who comes across like a young used car salesman) and daughter-in-law on his programs who do not add much. I believe being a celebrity has gone to his head and he is quite the egotist. An interesting thing I discovered a couple of years ago from a local contractor who had spent some time working in the Toronto area was that Holmes is almost universally disliked by contractors there, while some of the other TV-famous contractors in that area like Baeumler, Caruk and McGillivray are generally seen as good guys.

I watch (umm waste time on) TikTok and there are a lot of home inspectors on there that show new home issues. Little things like drain slope or bad downspout locations to major things like poorly built shower pans that don’t drain correctly and pool up.

One guy even a new house where many of the drains were clogged up with debris.

It's got to be better than the latest home improvement show coming out of the Burgh, "Home Again With the Fords". The Ford brother and sister team had a previous series where they supposedly restored old properties by painting everything inside with copious amounts of white paint. In that one they both came across as stoners most of the time. In this one the sister Leanne is still as spacey as can be but the brother seems to be a bit more normal. Somehow clients are giving them 6 figure budgets to do stuff that ends up looking only slightly less bad than what they started with. It is a train wreck.

I have no problem with plastic per say. As long as the job is done correctly and up to code. Plastic fittings (PEX & PVC) are generally strong and less costly to use than copper & cast iron. Here in New York City PVC Pipe & fittings are permitted in buildings 3 stories or less (it is a fire code). PEX fittings are permitted in certain applications for heat only. PEX is not permitted for domestic water because rats can chew through and cause problems very easily.

As @tjc78 said, cast iron is good for higher end residential applications so you don't hear the toilet flush.

I know everyone thinks PEX is the best thing ever, but my old home was sixty years old with many original copper pipes that were doing just fine!

When we did the addition they did a lot of work with pex and ended up with some interesting transitions between the two materials.

Somehow clients are giving them 6 figure budgets to do stuff that ends up looking only slightly less bad than what they started with. It is a train wreck.
I only watch these shows by osmosis, that means my wife watches them and if I'm in the room I may catch a glimpse of what's going on once in a while. My view on these things is if they are going to use my house for their show on which they are going to make money off of I either get a cut of their profits or a sizable discount off the work performed.
From what I’ve been told and seen, home owners sign up for this because there are a lot of suppliers that provide free items or at least highly discounted prices. So that is attractive to these folks. If you slow down the credits as they wiz by when these shows are over you’ll where promotional considerations are shown.

I’m waiting for the day they want to sign us up as flippers. I promise to watch my language. B)

Hey I was a sailor, it would be hard to use language that would offend me. So let it fly.
I was in the Navy too. I wasn’t a common swaby (I was an Airedale) but that doesn’t mean the Navy didn’t teach me their language. :D

I know everyone thinks PEX is the best thing ever, but my old home was sixty years old with many original copper pipes that were doing just fine!

When we did the addition they did a lot of work with pex and ended up with some interesting transitions between the two materials.

I’m not arguing about this but it only takes one fitting to make the transition and then the installation flys.

    jmonroe
Nothing to argue. It indeed does. My point is PEX is great for the trades. Much cheaper, easier to work with and we hope as durable as copper.

Unless as @nyccarguy pointed out, a rat chews it. I actually had that happen just after I graduated from college and lived in a mobile home. Went to get my shoes from the closet, and they were floating in water. The closet was backed up to the kitchen. I thought maybe the roof had leaked as it had rained hard the night before. I went into the kitchen and heard hissing. Under the cabinet water spraying everywhere. When the plumber came he showed me the teeth marks. I moved shortly afterwards to NC. Our house has PEX, no issues yet after 16 years.

At our campground the squirrels like to chew the rubber propane hoses on the regulators. That scared the heck out of me when my neighbor’s house was spraying propane everywhere.

I knew y'all been waiting to hear.....

-Dishwasher installed. No drama. Very quiet. Pretty (I guess) for a dishwasher. First load...dishes came out clean and dry. That's all I ask for.

Talking to the installers (by the way, it took two of them), I guess there really is a shortage of appliances because of the inability to get parts to make them. This is been an ongoing issue for over 12 months, according to him. It's starting to ease a bit now, but he said they don't expect to see inventory levels get to normal levels until late Spring, early Summer.

I got screwed. I paid almost 4 times that for the Cuisinart at BBB. I’ll just keep telling myself ours is prettier because it’s stainless. :(
