Do men tolerate the Covid-19 vaccine better than women? What's the deal
I just watched the CBS Evening News and it was reported that 80% of women have adverse reactions to the Covid-19 vaccine.
It wasn't clear whether the reactions were specific to one or all three vaccines. My wife had pain for 2 days after her jab. I on the other hand had no pain and slept like a baby.
The news often goes for ratings over accuracy.

I saw that Hemmings went live today with an episode of their Hot Rod BBQ podcast with guest Christy Lee, of various Motor Trend TV/Velocity car shows. I’m not a regular watcher of that pod because I don’t think it is very good in truth, but figured I’d watch to get an update on what she is doing these days since I hadn’t seen much of her lately.
Somehow they managed to spend an hour with her and never provided one bit of concrete info about what she is doing other than some vague references to something she couldn’t talk about. There was no mention of MT TV so I presume she is no longer with them, and none of her past shows with them were discussed ether. Really quite the accomplishment. Instead we got an hour of her talking about her motorcycles, her beginning in radio, and her thoughts on “influencers”. Also, it turns out she has a fairly annoying fake laugh she uses a lot in conversation which, combined with a host who didn’t seem to know what to talk about with her, didn’t help the quality of the production much.
I always wondered about her. She seems to go from show to show replacing some other female host only to disappear herself in short order. Makes you wonder if she’s difficult to work with or is she a trooper who graciously fills in temporary to help out.
Then I realize I’m watching for the cars, not the gossip.

My wife signed us up for the vaccine on the State’s website awhile back. I just got an email to schedule and they had multiple openings tomorrow 2 miles from my home. I’m very impressed. This is for the Pfizer vaccine.
When she filled out the questionnaire they ask all kinds of questions. I’ve had Cancer so I guess that puts me in a bracket to receive it fairly early.
Not impressed with the state system in NY. Multiple attempts to find a spot resulted in locations 150-200 miles away, closer to Canada than my house. Some of my coworkers bragged that they only had to travel 90 miles or could weasel an appointment at the nearby university or because of race-based preferences. I wasn’t prepared to participate in those games.
Finally the local drug store chain got some doses and I was able to book appointments 5 miles from front door. Funny how much better private enterprise is at handling this.

Where in NY to where in Florida, the devil is in the details. Lower Manhattan to the Florida state line is just over 900 miles. However upstate NY at the Canadian Border to Key west is 1,750 miles. One is doable the other nope.
Albany to Tampa and back. 80 year old former long haul trucker so I guess he was used to sleeping on the road.

Asking people if they've had their shots used to be an insult. I'm so old.
All my dogs had their shots in a timely manner - even had tags for their collars proving they had their shots. Perhaps we all should wear collars with dog tags proving we had our shots. I would wear it proudly!!!🤪😜🐶🐩🐕
Don’t laugh, there are proposals to require you to carry a card with you proving your vaccinations or you won’t be allowed to travel or go out in public. The irony of being required to “show your papers” seems lost on many.

My sister lives with my parents (Dad is 75 today) in Rockland. She was able to get them shots in Westchester by trying multiple times on the computer for them. Someone I do business with who has been work from home since March (Both he and his wife are seriously immuno compromised) lives in Goshen. The 1st available shot for his wife (she's had a stroke among other medical issues) was in Binghamton. The 1st available shot for him (gets blood transfusions weekly for neuropathy) was in Stony Brook, Long Island.

One of those fine lines that will teeter between public health needs & privacy concerns. I don't think you'll need to show vaccination papers to "go out in public," but I do believe we'll need to show proof for air travel. For how long, I have NO IDEA.

One of our guys did a round trip from NY to Florida in 42 hours. Can you beat that? You’ll have the car for it.
We’ll see. I can’t drive at night, so I’ll have to make hay during the daylight hours. Plus, any speeding tickets come out of my margins. Might not want to tempt fate, as I haven’t had a speeding ticket (one that stuck) for decades. I did get one that was issued via speed camera/van a couple of years ago. But, that was dismissed due to me wanting to actually take it to court (which the municipality did not want).
I have a lead on a return transport. But, it’s for a dealership, not a private owner. They’re long distance transports are usually pretty flaky.
I think I can make it to Biloxi in one day if I start at day break and drive until sundown.
Spend the night and do the pickup of the return the next day. But, I’ll be at the mercy of the return vehicle being available early to make it back in one day. Dealership pick ups usually are contracted by the sales dept. And, they usually don’t get started until 9-ish, sometimes 10-ish.
Return is some sort of RV or tricked out van. Can’t really make time in one of those.
Here is the plan.. You take off first thing in the morning. I'll fly to N.O., rent a car, and come pick you up in Biloxi. Then, we return to N.O, and fly home.
Of course, you'll have to add $162 for 3 legs of tickets and $100 for rental car and gas. Plus my fee.
All done in one day... lol
(the sticking point is you'd never be able to book R/T on Allegiant the same day) I'll keep thinking.

Actually, if the scheduling stays fairly liquid, I might do a little sight seeing while I’m down there.
Of course, this transport came about once the weather broke here (70º today), and not when it was snowing and 30º.

In the pod she directed viewers to her Instagram page for updates, so I went there and found nothing of note on the subject. Scrolling back to late last year I found the last references to her being on MT TV with some pics from GS, but it seemed clear those were shot long before and were just reaching air then.

I know how much you guys love a good dishwasher story. Well, I’ve got some dishwasher drama.
Lowes was supposed to install my dishwasher, but the unit itself is now unavailable.
Got a call Monday from Lowes stating their “system” was wrong about stock levels.....popular model....sold out because of the sale....blah, blah, blah. Anyway, it will be May before they can get the model I originally bought....COVID screwed up everything....they don’t know when their stock of KitchenAid will be replenished (they how can they plan a May delivery?). Bottom line, they want me to look at another model.
You guys seemed to like Bosch. So, looked at those, too. Guess what? Same deal. No stock.
I know Best Buy is low on stock....as is Home Depot. So, it’s a regional thing I suppose.
Was chatting with my best friend yesterday and told him what was going on. He had just remodeled his entire kitchen and recommended a local place (which I had never heard of) to get my appliances. Reason I’d never heard of them is they are a pretty far ways away from me (Batavia, OH). He knows the owner and said they have their own warehouse. So, no pulling stock from a pool, which isn’t up to date, as Lowes proved.
Anyway, called this place he recommended. Told him of my plight. He stocks GE and KitchenAid mostly....no Bosch though. Gave him the model number of the dishwasher I originally bought at Lowes, as well as the price. He confirmed that model was in short supply. But, he offered the next model up, which he did have in stock, for the same price Lowes was going to charge me for the lower model (which was already on sale). Not a huge difference...some better racks....an extended dry feature, some other minor differences.
He said he’d have it installed tomorrow (Thursday). Gave him my credit card number and it’s a done deal. Even installation charges were ½ of what Lowes wanted to charge. He also said the power cord and plumbing hardware comes with the unit (something Lowes wanted to charge extra for).
Never bought something for $850 sight unseen (except for WEB site viewing). Sounds good, but we’ll see how this goes tomorrow.

Gee, and here I thought it was carved on a piece of stone.
Nice looking dishwasher. Probably what I would get, or the model down you originally wanted. Or a Maytag (they own KA, right?)
Whirlpool Corp. owns both KitchenAid (bought from Hobart years ago) and Maytag (bought when Maytag went broke after the Neptune washer fiasco). Maytag is now an entry level brand for them.
A couple years back I thought our DW was dying (it didn’t) and browsed Lowe’s. After some chatting, narrowed it down to a nice mid level Whirlpool. Not sure what I would get now if needed.

That’s our exact model, except that ours has the front controls without the grab handle (all KA can be had either way). It’s awesome and that third rack is handy especially for all long utensils and even coffee mugs fit up there.

@stickguy ....funny, I shop for appliances that hit my price point (actually went a little over this go round). Talking to the local store I ended up buying from, the owner said people get all hung up on how quite they are. He said once you get below about 48db, they're all pretty hard to hear while running.
First one I had many years ago was a KitchenAid Superba, allegedly the best made. That thing sounded like a drummer in my kitchen. If it was running, you weren't having much of a conversation at the kitchen table. It had a delay wash feature. Even scheduling it to wash while we slept, we could hear it one floor up. But, it was a tank.
The one I'm replacing has a 50db rating (touted on my receipt, which I dug up in old files). Much better than the first one. You can hear it, but still carry on a conversation in the kitchen sitting less than 5' from it.
This one is even quieter than that. So, I'm assuming I'll be pleased.
@ab348 ...the one I just bought is made right up the road from me. They're designed and built there. You're right about Maytag. They used to be a premium brand. NEPTUNE kind of did then in. Whirlpool bought them for a song.
@tjc78 ....good to see some real world experience with it! Thanks!
Another item that is in short supply is electric can openers.
About 2 months ago our at least 15 year old Oster unit started acting up. Didn’t quit completely just needed help to spin the can but with help it worked. Finally went to Target to get a new one. Since the Oster served us well, got another one. A nice pretty stainless steel job to match the rest of the kitchen. Mrs. j liked it better than the old white one. I think it only opened about 10 cans before it made a hell of a grinding noise and didn’t turn the cans at all. Took it back to Target but they were out of them. I noticed that when I got the bad one it was their last Oster but now they had NONE of any brands.
I think we went to every store in town and nobody had any. I noticed on the Bed Bath and Beyond web site that our local store showed no inventory but one day when we were out I decided I’d go into Bed Bath and Beyond to see if they had any. Lucked out and got their last one, a Cuisinart. So far so good with that one.
I remember saying to the sales gal at BBB how hard it was finding an electric can opener and she said, “tell me about it. We found this one mixed in with some other product and just set it out about 20 minutes before you got here and we have do idea when we’ll get more. COVID-19 has everything messed up”.
FWIW, it looks like we’ll get our second shot tomorrow afternoon as scheduled. Mrs. j called the grocery store pharmacy last night to see what’s going on and was told they have it.

One of those fine lines that will teeter between public health needs & privacy concerns. I don't think you'll need to show vaccination papers to "go out in public," but I do believe we'll need to show proof for air travel. For how long, I have NO IDEA.
Don’t laugh, there are proposals to require you to carry a card with you proving your vaccinations or you won’t be allowed to travel or go out in public. The irony of being required to “show your papers” seems lost on many.
I thought SPAM cans came with a pull tab?
I was this close to only buying canned items with the pull-tops.
Once we got the Oster replacement, like a dope, I threw away the old unit. In hindsight I should have kept it because at least with some help it would open cans. But now we were relegated to using the barbaric hand opener. I didn’t know we still had it but I’m glad I found it or pull-tops would have been a necessity.

I’m sorry but how lazy do you have to be to need an electric can opener? I remember my mother had a General Electric model because it was the latest fad and my dad, a GE engineer, bought it for her.

A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing.
I'm sensing maybe a little contrived outrage here. Many nations required vaccines prior to entry long before covid, and I am not seeing any concrete plans for these papers for someone simply driving around their home region. When it comes to international travel, I predict this will indeed become a mandate, and it's nothing really new, nor malevolent.
The brave warrior class can demand documents already, strangely few complaints about that.
Over the summer the fine residents of British Columbia were chasing anyone with Alberta plates out of town lest they get Cootified from those “foreigners”.
From 20 or so years ago, we found the Canadians at the Niagara side of the river to be very welcoming. That included the drive north along the river to I don't recall where. Beautiful. Well kept and CLEAN.

If you hit a paywall you can Google a less praetorian site.
Your passport is already linked to your address, phone number, criminal records (if any), race, height, weight, hair color, eye color, citizenship status, etc. What harm would there be if they add your vaccine status? Would you want someone who is infected with eBola to cross into the country? How about Typhoid? Same difference.
The level of paranoia up here this past year towards vehicles with US or out-of-province plates has been quite distasteful, from online abuse to vandalism of the vehicle to calling the police, even though there was no way to enter the province without going through several official checkpoints equivalent to international border crossings (which is itself against the law but the angry mob didn't care and public health officials cheered on ratting suspects out).
I think it's related to tinfoil hat "government is watching me" or contrarian "you can't tell me what to do" sentiment. Of course, if the government wants to track you and/or restrict you, they will, and most who are afraid of being observed are inconsequential to the point where big brother couldn't care less.
And I still haven't seen who is restricting those without a vaccine passport from "going out in public" (where travel without vaccines has been restricted for decades).

It is important to differentiate between passports used for travel versus passports of a different type being required to enter a restaurant or a hockey rink. Why, next thing you know, they will be putting up fences around the US Capitol! Wait, what?

Well, since you ask, I’m pretty damn lazy when it comes to opening cans and even worse with other things. Keep reading. We’ve always had an electric can opener. I’m pretty sure our first one was a shower gift before we got married. Not too long after electricity started popping out of wires.
And since I’m on the subject of lazy, we also have an electric knife. I wouldn’t think of carving a turkey the old fashioned way. You’ll really like how I lazy I am with an electric toothbrush. When we added space to the master bath a few years ago we put in a 6 foot double vanity. So I bought an electric toothbrush for my side of the vanity. I wasn’t about to walk to Mrs. j’s side to get her electric toothbrush and then change out the brush after I got there and then change it out again when I was finished. That would have taken all the fun out of brushing my teeth. Sure is nice living in the new millennium.

The birth certificate I drove back to my Indiana area of my youth. The hospital where I was born in 1944 has been replaced and the building is being used for various county offices. The birth (and death) records department I'm told is where the nursery was in the old hospital building. I don't know if that was the nursery area in 1944, but it's ironic I was getting my birth certificate in the nursery of the hopsital where I was born a few decades back.

All done in one day... lol
(the sticking point is you'd never be able to book R/T on Allegiant the same day)
I'll keep thinking.

So, Christy Lee is no longer with GARAGE SQUAD? I loved her in that. But, my new fantasy is Sarah Greenwood (sarahntuned.com).
Actually, if the scheduling stays fairly liquid, I might do a little sight seeing while I’m down there.
Of course, this transport came about once the weather broke here (70º today), and not when it was snowing and 30º.
