on the EVs, it seems to me that they should not be so expensive at this point. Are the batteries really that much pricier than the engine in an ICE unit?
Big battery packs for EVs are really expensive. The cost of replacing a Model 3 battery is around $17k according to this article.
I don't know how much it would cost to put in an all-new 1.5 turbo engine in an Accord or Civic, but maybe around $8k? That's a lot of money, but less than half of a Tesla battery pack.
Battery costs might decline as production is ramped up, but that will be countered to a large degree by rising costs for the short supplies of the raw materials that go into batteries. All the big EV players are scrambling to lock down their own supplies of raw materials.
Beware the catalytic converter thieves if you drive a Toyota Tundra or Prius:
Though thieves look for any vehicles left in a vulnerable position, Gamez said Toyota Tundras are a top target for catalytic converter theft because the trucks have four large catalytic converters that command higher prices than those from most vehicles.
Four catalytic converters from a Toyota Tundra could get thieves over $1,000 at some metal recyclers, Laviage said.
Toyota Prius models from 2004 to 2009 are also targeted because their converters contain higher concentrations of precious metals to compensate for the reduced flow of hot gases from hybrid engines, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A single catalytic converter from an older Toyota Prius can sell for $1,000 or more, the IIHS found.
To illustrate how the Canadian car market is different from that in the US, I looked at Honda Canada's website to get up to speed on the Accord Touring hybrid. Here they are available in your choice of white or black paint, and only with a black interior. So GG's new ride would be a unicorn here in terms of colors.

.......and most places in Canada get cold enough in the winter that seat warmers are a must and a heated steering wheel is a nice bonus. Maybe those steering wheels are good for people with arthritis.
I have the heated front seats (cooled as well) and the heated steering wheel - never turned on the heated steering wheel and I would need to look up the details as to where the on/off button or switch is if I ever get an opportunity to use it. Here in Florida, a heated steering wheel is a “necessity”? 🤓🤪😜
I find that the cloth seats in the Sonata really don't feel cold even in the coldest weather but the leather seats in the 4 Series can be cold even in mild weather so they need to be heated.
The vinyl seats in my hooptie van are self heating. You just leave it in the sun for an hour and you need asbestos pants. Conversely, if you want them cooled you roll down the window and drive fast.

I liked seeing the pix of the Accord. I'm interested to know how you feel about the pros and cons of the push-button transmission. The benefit seems to be if you've got a drink in the cup holder you don't need to maneuver around the shifter. But on the other hand I kind of like the feel of putting the shifter into drive.
On a different topic, what do you folks put in your door pockets? After years of experimenting here's what I try to have in the passenger pocket—Kleenex, water bottle, granola bar, and a compact umbrella. Believe it or not most of those things get used at some point.
I was going to ask GG how that transmission worked....I checked a photo. Would you say that is easy to use and pretty much foolproof? I keep the same things in my door....umbrella is in the passenger side for the few times it is needed. I also keep a notepad and a pen clipped to it.
It took me a while to figure out how to get out of Park on one of those the other day. Not really intuitive. I also don’t like the buttons on the GMC vehicles where you have to lift the button instead of push. Ditto on the dial shifters on Chryslers and Fords.
Well looking at that bottom picture I would be afraid to drive that car. My wifes car has that type of knob that controls the infotainment system. I would be afraid I would forget what I was trying and slam the thing into park going 60 MPH down the road thinking I was changing the radio station.

Had the button transmission in both my TLX and now in the Accord. Really, after the first couple of days in the TLX, my hand fell readily to whatever push/pull I was wanting. Plus, in addition to being in different places on the console, the buttons are a different feel/shape.
Makes sense. Drive is the most prominent and at the lowest position. Reverse you must pull backwards (novel idea...LOL!). Park is at the top. Not sure I've used neutral more than 5 times in any given year.
On the TLX, the gear took a split second to go into gear. In the Accord, it's instantaneous because it really doesn't have a transmission per se. You hit the button you want and go...no waiting for the transmission to engage.
When I test drove the Bronco, it had a dial to select the gear. I had to look down to see where I needed to go to choose what I wanted to do. But, I'd wager after a brief adjustment period, it was become 2nd nature, too.
I would imagine it is the same for someone using a stalk in a Mercedes to engage the transmission. A little adjustment period at first, but then it becomes 2nd nature.
Overall, I like the new dial/button selectors.
As an aside, I've read where others bemoan the end of parking brake handles. On the TLX and now the Accord, it's an electronic parking brake. You stop the car and turn it off, the parking brake automatically engages. You start it back up and put it in gear, and the parking brake releases. Easy-Peezy!
The problem with electronic parking brakes is that they add another level of complexity to a brake job; I have the Carly App so I'm good, but if you don't have an equivalent interface for your car good luck replacing the rear pads.

In the ID.4 we just ordered, the gear selector is a twist knob next to the gauge cluster:
Twist forward to select "Drive" or "Brake" - the latter turns on one-pedal mode.
Twist backward for reverse.
Button on the end engages Park and the parking brake.
Had an uncle who had a Chrysler something or other that looked like this. I remember it having a push button transmission (which at the time, I thought was pretty cool).
Now that brings back some fond memories. I learned to drive on my Father’s new push button drive ‘58 Plymouth Sport Suburban station wagon. Still remember going to the drive-in many times with that car. That was so much fun it bordered on being illegal.

This guy tried to haul a full load of bricks in his Sienna; They say the repair will be about $1000, a U-Haul trailer would have been $20.
And my wife wondered why I took four trips to get our paver blocks home.
There used to be a grass farm outside of town (well outside, about 25 miles) which would sell you a pallet of St Augustine. No smaller sizes, you had to buy a pallet. The good news was you knew the grass was freshly cut. The bad news was that a pallet weighed somewhere between 1,500 and 3,000 pounds. Freshly cut, and the sod itself full of water, the weight was going to be closer to 3,000. I had at the time a Ford F250 with overload springs, and I could handle the weight. But I watched them unload a pallet onto a half ton truck with a fork lift, with immediate very bad results. The guy working the fork lift tried to warn him, but he was sure his truck could handle it.

After much too much deliberation, I'm having a Bryant HVAC system installed tomorrow. 4 ton condenser with a 2 stage compressor. The furnace is a 2 stage multi speed blower rated at 90% efficiency. The installer is someone who has previously done repair work for me. They had the best price, and I trust them. So fairly easy decision.

I'll guess the efficiency is 94%-98% for the gas furnace. I don't think they make 90%, any more. When my local company installed mine in 2016, it was Lennox. But, now they are all Bryant, and that's what they installed in my son's house in 2021.

Actually, the tires look very new, and the tread looks good! They even said that in the video. But, he did have the "Regen Brakes" on. I had to look that up; In a battery-powered electric vehicle, regenerative braking (also called regen) is the conversion of the vehicle’s kinetic energy into chemical energy stored in the battery, where it can be used later to drive the vehicle. It is braking because it also serves to slow the vehicle.
Sudden braking may have caused the car to slide out of control. It sounds similar to using cruise control, when the roads are wet - it is too easy to lose control.

A few years ago I had my electric hot water heater replaced. The plumbers carried the old one out to the end of the driveway and then carried in the new one to install. I wasn't paying attention but assumed they loaded the old one on their truck. Imagine my surprise when the van left the driveway to reveal the old one sitting on the curb. I was irritated by that but need not have been as that evening I looked out and it was already gone. I gather the local junk-pickers spotted it and snagged it. I guess the plumbers knew more about that than I did.

Hmmm, well my estimate shows a 90% efficiency furnace. So, hopefully they're not installing some leftover antique furnace.
The field adjuster just came out a couple hours ago. The guy was like 6'8". Played ball at N.C Ashville. He was inspecting damages while my hvac people were installing the new system. My HVAC guy said I could pay 70% of bill and then the remaining in 2 weeks when my settlement comes in.
