Chips and electronic components have been so reliable and mass produced for years it is doubtful to me that all of a sudden we would have poor production and quality control. Just another thing to make people panic.

And yet, 5 years ago when I had my accident I had 2 rental cars, A New Ford Fusion that would stall all of a sudden for no apparent reason. I took it back and they said it was a common problem, the dealer will be able to fix it.

Then the second car they gave me which was a Chrysler 300 had a mind of it's own, steering....the wheel would pull pretty hard at odd time. The 3rd car, a Ford Escape was pretty solid with no issues.

When we picked up our 2013 Audi A4 they couldn't get the bluetooth to work with the phone, we had to go back a few days later when they got a new program.

When I got my 2015 E400 they didn't put in the GPS information....the salesman came to our house and downloaded it.

    I wouldn't be 100% sure, but that's just me.

There are big differences, really big differences, between having a bad chip and having software problems. Bad chips are really rare these days (as noted by @tjc78 above), but software issues are all too common, and actually seem to be getting worse. I blame the increasingly bad software situation on outsourcing (offshoring). If you outsource your new software project to a company where they’re paying $10 a day to software developers, well …

That outsourcing and paying $10 a day is a two part problem.

Heard through the neighborhood grapevine a couple of days ago that a movie was being shot using a couple of houses on my street. Turns out that one of them is right across the street. Yesterday morning I saw the homeowners, an empty-nest couple, out front loading suitcases into their Outback while a large number of people milled around outside before all going into the backyard. I thought it was some sort of ceremony or whatever but being Monday morning that made little sense. The homeowners left soon thereafter.

This morning a pair of cube vans showed up, one filled with furniture and accessories, the other with lights and equipment, along with a small army of people. The furniture was moved inside, though I don’t know where the homeowner furniture went. Then 3 porta-johns went into the backyard. Now they have one side of the street coned off and a large mobile generator is parked across the street from me. Looks like action will happen tomorrow. Should be interesting.

They may have to issue a .... what do you call it? It happens so rarely that I can't think of the term. Is it a "recall"? The car industry is usually so up-to-date and hell-bent on quality control, I'm surprised they would ever allow a vehicle out the door with a substandard part.

I guess that explains why the guy at the service desk says, “sir, that’s not a problem, they all do that. They come from the factory like that”.

Another story about EV fires on the TV today. One of the networks that has been beating the drum for climate change and implying that anyone who isn’t buying one is evil, is now doing stories about all the fires of flooded electric cars in Florida. Suddenly if you own an EV you life is in eminent danger of it exploding in a ball of flames that can’t be put out. They even wax hysterical that EVs left plugged into chargers in garages will burn your house down.

I wish these media types would make up their minds, are electric vehicles the savior of humanity or assassins waiting to immolate you in your sleep?

I was awakened before first light this AM by sounds from outside. After I decided trying to get back to sleep was hopeless, I got up and looked outside to see a bunch more cube vans outside along with a bunch of people and lots of wheeled carts with equipment, craft services, you name it. I was surprised there weren't any trailers for the talent because years ago when I lived downtown there were lots of movies made there and trailers were everywhere. Maybe this is a lower-budget job and they do makeup, wardrobe, etc in the cube vans.

As usual with such things there are tons of people standing around not doing much until they're called upon for their specialty. The A-body wagon in the driveway tells me it must be a period piece. I am guessing it is Halloween related as there are lots of pumpkin-like props all over the place. It all seems to be shot on hi-res video now as I guess the days of Panavision cameras and film are long past. It is a crummy day to be filming outside as they are doing, being wet and windy. The only action I have seen so far are a mom and daughter getting out of the station wagon multiple times, going to the house and knocking on the front door and then going inside, to shouts of "action" and "cut" from the director.

19 months of PHEV ownership, no fires/explosions to this point. Knock lithium-ion.

Also, my auto insurance premium renewal is due 11/1. Agent emailed me, said if I go back to the insurer I left for the current one, I could cut my premium by 20%. Sold!
I'm celebrating 25 years with my company next year; much like my insurance premiums, likely I would have benefitted by leaving (and returning, which isn't uncommon where I work) for greener pastures.

    You can tell it is an HHR from that photo? I don't think so, the front headlights are a different configuration. I think it is more like this but I think it is something else, but I can't pin it down. The large light and smaller lights are one piece, and it has a large front windshield. This is like being a detective, any other ideas. I think it resembles a Forrester more;

No, I don't think it is an HHR. Just that it looked more like one. The fenders appear to be lower than the hood and the roof seems oddly raked. The cross-bar in the HHR grille doesn't match up with the burning car, however. Definitely doesn't look like the Forester to me.

I just received my renewal notice from Progressive for my next 6 months of car insurance. I switched 6 months ago from USAA, after more than 30 years. I shopped with several different companies, and went with Progressive for the best rate, $729 for 6 months. Now they want $976 for the next 6 months, an increase of 33.8%. I called and they said I received a discount of $101 for the first 6 months only for having signed up online. The rest was just normal increase. Throwing out the $101, the increase was only 17.5%, which doesn't sound too horrible, until you remember that is for 6 months, and makes the annual rate of increase 35%.

Am I going to need to shop for car insurance every 6 months?

The point I was making is that the media after hyping up EVs is now trying to tear them down. How would you like to be the guy who listened to the TV telling you electric cars are the wave of the future only to be told now that they are ticking time bombs waiting to incinerate you?

The folks here do their research but a lot of people just go with the latest thing because somebody told them to.

We have a situation in Canada where everyone had to have an ArrivCan app put on your phone if you were entering the country. You enter your arrival time, flight number, declare you aren't bringing back any meat or produce, and you had to show your proof of a covid vaccine.
The app cost the government $54 million to have it produced.
Some IT techs said they could have made it for under $ 1 million.
    Typical!

I wonder what they would do if you didn’t have a smart phone, kick you out?

How did you know? This appeared very early this morning. No idea where they found one in these parts.

    Geez, what are the odds?

Was the Charger part of the set or does it appear to take place in the 80s/90s?

No, the Charger was just passing by. I found it odd that they didn’t close off the street at least when the cameras were rolling.

    A friend said he was told by someone who works in the automotive industry this;
Now is not a good time to buy a new car, chips are being made and rushed onto the market and they may not be up to the proper standards".
I don't know if that is true or not.....but it is something to think about.

Not true. NOT even remotely. I worked in that industry and have stayed close in touch, to the point I’m still doing part time work for my old company.

Chips are made one way and ALL are tested. If you ever get a chance to see chip factories, how they’re made and how they’re tested, you’ll understand.

China Is Selling Russia Lots of Faulty Chips

Interesting story, but has nothing to do with chips used in cars that are being sold here in the US.
Grey market chips? Can’t even imagine why anyone would buy them. It would cost more to implement grey market chips than it would to buy legit chips from AMD, Intel, Qualcomm, TSM, Samsung ,etc.

    I can hear that!
I am at the library using my laptop using their wifi.
Thank goodness for the library. I don't take out books, would rather buy them and not have to think about returning them.
The cable company was suppose to fix our TV and internet on Saturday.
I told them their technician didn't even bury the cable, he just put it on top of the ivy, how long before someone cuts the grass or trims the ivy and cuts through it?
I tried to act like a normal responsible person using logic and not telling them I hope they send me a survey so I can say I give them "0" chance of recommending them to any human being.
They checked google earth or something and said they would send a truck with a bucket....on Friday.

Is there anything on the other end of that cable? It doesn't look like there is anything on the end that is showing.

We’ve had that done. Different crews always run wire and do connections, then somebody else comes to bury it. Pretty common to see wires across the lawn for a while. Most people are smart enough not to mow it.

Can you see a white post way back in the photo? The cable goes over the street, comes down the telephone pole, then goes into that white covering, and then he buried it into the ground for about 10 feet - I think they have something that makes a trench and then they bury the wire until it gets to the house, but this guy was lazy and left about 20 feet lying on top of the ivy. It broke off somewhere underground, just where it comes up to the surface again.

3rd world country professionalism. I'm glad I didn't add on their landline phone service or that would be out too.

We just had our line cut by the tech who was burying the next door neighbor's line.
They sent out another crew to fix an bury ours. They knew what they were doing though.
