I replaced mechanical hard drives with SSD drives on 2 of the laptops. Much quicker on startup and noticeable speed increase in some operations. But not much in normal folk's operations.

For my money, the main advantage of SSD is the elimination of the mechanical hard drive with its tendency to break down. I've only had two laptop crashes of consequence in over 25 years of laptop use (HP, IBM, Dell, etc.) and they were both hard drives grinding (literally) to a halt.

The main advantage of SSD is the speed, pure and simple. Boot times are reduced dramatically. In one instance where I was upgrading for a friend, he did some speed tests before and after. Boot time went down from 90 seconds to 18 seconds, and this was not a new OS install, this was just cloning the hard drive to the new SSD.

And the frequent Microsoft updates of the OS, which can seem to take forever on an older computer with a spinning hard drive, are dramatically faster on an SSD.

Also, on a related note, about the brand of the computer making no difference -- I agree completely that it makes no difference on the compatibility of the printers, and on finding support. But (you knew there was a "but" coming, right? :) )

There can be a difference, in some cases a marked difference, on the underlying quality, thus the longevity. HP and Lenovo notebooks seem to last forever. Off brands, such as the Gateway under discussion here, can be iffy. It might last until it's obsolete and becomes landfill, and it might not. For most people, the cost savings (which are very significant in this case) makes it a good gamble. For those who are risk averse, you might be better off paying twice as much for an HP or a Lenovo.

After writing the above, it occurred to me that this is rather the opposite of what we normally discuss here, automobiles. The more expensive automobile brands, BMW, Mercedes, etc, can be the most problematic, the most expensive to maintain. Where the lower cost brands (Honda, Toyota, etc) have the reputation of running forever with little out of pocket expenses.

IMHO It depends. More expensive cars have more parts, are more refined, so there is more that can go wrong. You have to decide if paying more is worth it for the extra driving pleasure.

Computers have a lot of variables regarding the cost. What is it used for, how much power do you need, how important is 90 seconds compared to 18 seconds, how long do you keep your computer for, etc etc.

Many years ago I had to wear a suit occasionally for business. I liked new ones but cheap ones, I didn't need it very often, and they changed the style every year. Better to buy a cheaper one and replace it more often.

I agree with this. The pitch before set up the ump to actually make the call. When Votto is going bad, he tries to do the same thing. And, never gets called for it.

Pretty weak on the batter. He has a 3-0 count, 2 outs, and guys on 2nd and 3rd. Chances are, he is going to walk, anyway. Drawing a walk or a HBP yields very little advantage. Guess he didn't trust himself to take a chance on actually swinging.

It's always irritating when the announcers are clearly on the side of the opponent when they're
calling a game. Whenever Penn did something they liked, the narrators' voices went up an octave and the speech speeded up to tell how carefully that play had been effected. I just want announcers to announce the game and let the fans add the sizzle.

I stayed up late watching the WS game because I couldn’t believe they managed to rough up Verlander after falling behind by 5 and I had a feeling they were going to take it. Dramatic way for them to grab the lead in extras. Had a couple of Evan Williams 1783 bourbons since the game went so long so I was a bit slow getting going this morning. Great win though.

Saw a cute license plate. "RN MY PL8"

Of course it was on a fairly nice Jeep with 5 lights mounted on
the front of the roof. White. Large wheels.

What is it about Jeeps that the owners sometimes, sometimes, have headlights
that could be used by police search and rescue teams scanning the countryside
    for lost persons.

A few have them aimed upward directly into the eyes of the oncoming vehicles.
Aren't there any state laws on headlamp brightness anymore?

But it's neat the way some of the Jeep owners have modified, personalized, their
jeeps. I was behind one a few months back with twinkle lights on the face of the
high-mounted spare tire. They were various colors and twinkled in a rythmic way.
Interesting to watch while waiting for the stoplight to change.

Those headlights are for off reading at night. O do beleivebits illegal to use them on the road.

Question for you computer specialist guys.
My HP laptop is probably 6 to 8 years old. I got a message on it that Windows 8.1 won't be supported after Jan 2023. It said you can update to...I think it said Windows 10 or 11 if you follow instructions.
I checked with HP and they said my laptop is too old to work with Windows 10 or 11.
So, do I just keep going until it doesn't work any more?
Do I start looking for a new computer?
Do I hope enough people complain and they change their mind?
    Do I need updates?

I have recommended this (or a very similar model) to a couple of my friends, and they have been quite satisfied.

Bear in mind this is very cheaply constructed, and not upgradeable, but it works quite well. And for $279 it's hard to go wrong.

As to your old notebook, if it's running Windows 8.1 the odds are very good that it can successfully run Windows 10. Not 100% in your favor, but better than 90%.
I've used chromebooks for years now and been very happy with them. Very simple and intuitive, but I don't think you can buy one for that price.

The wife and I were out and about today and came across a car limping by in the right lane with it's emergency flashers on. From under the car I could see the front passenger side tire was flat and since it was approaching a firestone store I though it would be going in there, it didn't. Well as I was stopped waiting to make a left turn the car slowly passed us and crawled across the intersection and I noticed that it looked like from my angle that the tire had started to shred. Not sure if he made it home but I'm pretty sure he is going to need a new rim at the very least.

Interesting experience today while I was at the mailboxes picking up stuff. That is adjacent to a small office building parking lot. As I was getting back into the ATS I heard a voice calling to me. I thought I might have dropped a piece of mail, but no. She came over to ask where I had gotten my car as the color combo was exactly what she wanted. She said that she was currently driving a Benz, a C400 which she pointed to in the parking lot, white over black, and disliked it for being too stiffly-sprung. I think it was a C-class from what I remember from a distance but she said it stickered in 2019 from $90K which is high-end E-class territory so who knows. She said she bought it a year or two back for $54K. She did a walk around of mine and was just fawning over it the whole time.. I probably could have sold it to her! She couldn’t believe it was a 2017 from the condition. Nice lady.

I have also, but you have to be careful when buying a CB. They have a 5 year life span, that is, 5 years from the mfg date of the machine, not 5 years from when you buy one. After 5 years they will still work somewhat, but you stop getting updates, etc. and lose some workability. Printers stop working and things like that...but you have to figure out the expiration date yourself because no one mentions it when they are selling one. Not Costco, not Amazon, etc. so you could buy a "brand new machine" that was mfg. 4 years ago but never sold before, and you would only get 1 year of updates. The seller should have to divulge this info, but they don't. It is truly a case of buyer beware, but you can usually figure it out if you work at it before you buy one.

Nice lady.

That’s an old pickup line that a lot of bored women driving Euro cars use when they see old guys picking up their mail.

Interesting experience today while I was at the mailboxes picking up stuff. That is adjacent to a small office building parking lot. She sounds like a scammer, and what's with the stiff springs? If she wants a soft ride she should have got a Buick or something of that ilk. I don't know, something doesn't seem right. You should have offered to trade....even.
Once I got out of my car and started walking toward a grocery store and a young lady with purple hair that was a bit spiky came up to me and said she really liked my car. Hmm, now why would she say that to me?
So I said "Thanks", and continued into the store. I hope she doesn't think I was ignoring her, but I was in a hurry.....and I don't want to lose half of my assets.

She didn't ask or suggest anything other than mostly some questions about the engine and the dealership where I got it. She also asked if Caddy used a touchscreen (it does) and said that her Benz did not and required voice commands instead which she hated. No idea if that is true. Well dressed, well-spoken. Younger than me but most people with jobs are now. Not a scammer I'm pretty sure.

For USDM anyway I think C400 was MY 2015-16 only. It was the highline non-AMG car and in theory could have had a sticker maybe just over 60K USD, but not sure how many/any were built that way.

MB "sport" suspension tuning can be harsh, especially on runflats or bad roads.

I tried telling her that the ATS suspension is quite firm also and that Cadillac is now much like M-B in that department but she seemed to have it in her head that they were still soft like in the old days.

Maybe she was lonely and just wanted someone to talk to.
Maybe she would have been happy swapping cars. :)

I think that was just the person giving the compliment being nice…not that the car was nice.😆

Now I have a conundrum to resolve.

Seeing that Stickguy brought that NJ warmth with him to upstate NY we are experiencing an Indian Summer like never before. We had out first frost on Saturday the 29th which is the latest first frost I can remember since I started farming in 1984. Previous record was Oct. 20th. Heck, we’ve had snow storms as early as Oct. 4th.

This coming week we are forecast to have a stretch of at least 5 days with 70+ temperatures and I have to decide if I will roll the convertible back out of storage to take advantage.

My other concern is that Stickguy has been so lucky with the weather, I wonder if I should have him buy me a lottery ticket.🤑🤑🤑

We are having warm weather in norther Ohio too. They are calling it Second Summer(Indian Summer is not appropriate anymore).

Has anyone actually asked the Indians if they object?
