The talk a little while ago about garbage disposals must have been enough.
Ours went haywire over the weekend. It is about 6 years old and is an InSinkErator Evolution Excel. I bought one of the best there were figuring it would last a long time. It has been very quiet. Now it sounds like we are trying to grind up nuts and bolts.
Yes, I cut the power, reached down inside and didn't find anything that shouldn't be there.
Q: We’ve had the same garbage disposal since we moved into our house about 10 years ago. It’s been struggling lately and making weird grinding sounds. Should I be worried that it’s about to break down? How long do garbage disposals last? A: The short answer is, say goodbye to your garbage disposal because it’s probably on its last legs. For all their wear and tear, garbage disposals are surprisingly resilient and can keep running for a long time—but everything breaks down eventually. How long do garbage disposals last? It can vary depending on the model, usage, and maintenance, but 8 to 15 years is a pretty typical lifespan for a garbage disposal.
We got a new sink about a year ago and needed a garbage disposal too. I asked them to install a Badger (which I think is an InSinkErator) and the plumber....who has always been 100% honest, said to do it right get a real GD......I don't know what it is but it is more like $350 and seems to be industrial strength, the motor sounds strong and it seems to have a lot of power. I like horsepower in my cars....and in my garbage disposal units, the more the better!
My thinking when I spent that much. Six years later I'm replacing it.
A friend is a plumber and he said to not do anything until he looks at it. He is supposed to stop this evening. I have the new one sitting on the counter in case he can't do miracles.

Speaking of appliances failing, on Sunday I was scrolling through FB and came across a promoted post for Bosch appliances featuring refrigerators. I didn't know they were in that market but not surprising I suppose. What did surprise me was that they left comments open and there were hundreds of them, most complaining about their Bosch refrigerator failing, sometimes multiple times, and not being able to get parts to repair it. Lots of the failures were electronics like logic boards, but I also saw a number dealing with ice makers and compressor/refrigeration mechanical parts. There were so many that it almost seemed like they were being trolled by a competitor, but that is hard to believe. I wonder if they subcontract their refrigerators out to Samsung, LG, Hisense or some other lower-end brand? A real black eye for Bosch if true.
Bosch makes built-in refrigerators (high end) and typical free-standing refrigerators. The side-by-side free-standing refrigerators are normal, single compressor models. I'm on my 2nd one. The french-door models are dual compressor, and are expensive, compared to the competition.
Built-in models tend to be problematic for all brands. I'd guess those dual compressor models might be iffy, as well. I'm certain that the side-by-side free standing models are made in China. In the 11 years we had our first one, the only repair was a leaking coil (not cheap) at year 6.
I'll guess that almost none of Bosch appliances are made in Europe, any longer.
I like my Bosch dishwasher…quiet, gets dishes really clean, dries well.
Refrigerators….different story. Samsung….Junk. Kenmore…junk! Finally ended up with a Whirlpool. Not even their high end model. Has an ice maker. French doors with filtered water in the door. Bottom Freezer. 5 years and nary a blip. Sometimes I hear when it’s self defrosting, but that’s it.

They are made by Home Depot Pro, which used to be called Interline. That is a company I never heard of before. There is a list on their website of brands they make, none of which I have ever heard of either.
Funny thing happened, I guess with all the talk here about appliances. When I was reading the posts about where stuff is made I had a flashback to the days when I was in university in the '70s. Classes were at different times each day so I had free time on various days of the week in late morning or early afternoon and I got hooked on game shows. I especially loved The Price is Right. This was so long ago that Bob Barker was still dyeing his hair.
A lot of their prizes were appliances of course, and Jay Stewart, the announcer who described them, almost always used to name the company and its location at the end of his spiel. From that I learned the useful information that Maytag was made in Newton, Iowa; Whirlpool was in Benton Harbor, Michigan; and Amana was in Amana, Iowa. Don't recall a location for GE but I gather they have been in Louisville, KY since the 1950s. Lots of appliance prizes whose brand names I recall but not much else: Gibson, Kelvinator, Norge, Magic Chef, Speed Queen, Tappan, Hardwick.

We have a GE wall oven and microwave. 24 yrs old. We broke the platter once, and they were still available as replacement. The wall oven has touch sensitive controls. The circuit board went out at about 2 years. The GE repairman lives down the street. He asked me if we'd ever sent in the warranty cards (newly built house), and we hadn't. He said, "Good", and ran it through warranty.
Not bad for 24 years.
Our Jenn-Air, flat top electric cooktop, with downdraft venting is also 24 yrs old. Still going strong. Original garbage disposal, as well. We are on our third refrigerator, second dishwasher, and third washer/dryer set.
Second gas hot water heater (won't be long for this one) Second HVAC system (gas furnace/central air) Third garage door opener (2nd door)

That sounds like the model I bought several years back to replace my earlier Insinkerator. It lists the same features. AND it was much quieter than previous model. The sound control is partly due to the design of the rubber ring in the bottom of the sink. I recall ours needed replacing and there was a redesign on it, so the noise was a little higher. That rubber ring needs cleaning about once a week. Along with wiping the inside of the top of the unit while its out. Nasty stuff.
Price was a lot lower when I bought mine, but still pricey.
That reminds me of an interaction I had with an old guy in the store who was riding a handicapped scooter. I paused in my walk to let him pass and he said “young people first”. We both had a laugh.

Very similar...your is 3/4 horses, this one is 1.1 horses. Yours has a 9 year warranty....this one is 13 years. I have no idea where the receipt is though. It seems pretty powerful so yours will have more than enough power.
The oldest sent us a brand new metal ladder as the older wooden one needed replacement. She had Home Depot deliver it one day and must admit, it was way overdue! Helps when the power does out & we must fiddle with the garage door opener unit on the ceiling. Finding that as I'm getting older, the kids see this & have definitely stepped in to help with the "heavy lifting" so to speak. It's greatly appreciated!!

That’s one “tool” I could really use. My collection of tools is plenty for the average DIY homeowner, but I don’t have a decent ladder. I know I couldn’t replace the bulb in my garage with the crappy 6’ one I have.
When we moved I left my ancient, heavy wood one and bought a higher line aluminum one at lowes. Still 6’ though. Big improvement. I might not be able to reach the garage ceiling either but those are newer led bulbs so hopefully never have to! The longer ones are a bit of a pain to maneuver. Especially inside.
You just need to use your truck. Back that under where the bulb is, and open the ladder up in the bed!

I saw my first Maverick today. It was an orangish/red color.
I went from the left lane to the right lane to a turning lane in one swoop - right in front of me. I almost saw my first Maverick crash.
So far, I have seen exactly one, and that was about 2 months ago. They are obviously still very rare around here, and this is Texas where everyone drives a truck! (And by truck, I do not mean SUV.)

Yeh, but they only buy big trucks in Texas don't they?
I'm embarrassed to admit that I only recently found out that my garage door outside keypad does not require the 4 digit code to lower the door. Just hit the "enter" button. Am I the only person that did not know that. And do they all do that? Have entered the code for years.
I drove the Pacifica today, just a short trip to the grocery store. The first time I’ve been in it since I aired up the tires, and I noticed the warning symbol on the dash was still on. Taking a closer look, the warning symbol does resemble the low tire pressure, but it has an “A” in the middle of it. I was scratching my head thinking about that one, and the only thing I could think of was “anti-lock brakes”. Which did not make me happy, repairing an anti-lock braking system can get expensive.
When I got back home, I dug out the owner’s manual – when all else fails, RTFM! Seems my warning is for the “Auto Start-Stop System”, something I would never have thought of.
Found a few things online. Number one possibility is battery going out, but mine is only about a year old. Second most likely cause appears to be the IBS (Intelligent Battery Sensor), which is described as
the IBS is that big black plastic thing on the negative battery cable just before the connector. If the IBS is faulty, it will cause ESS errors / warning lights. Only a dealership can diagnose the IBS, with their wiTECH scanner tool.
Did you turn it off? Usually if it can be switched off you get a message. But it will shut down under certain conditions, weak battery bring one of them.

It’s somewhat new. My 10 YO old or so unit did not have one, but the replacement I got a few years ago did. I would not have noticed if the installer hadn’t pointed it out.

I learned that about mine, as well. Not sure if that's always been the case with all brands.
I'm going to have to correct myself here. I have not replaced the battery in this 2019 Pacifica, it looks like it still has the original battery. And it has an "auxiliary battery" right next to the regular battery, which is often the cause of the "Auto Stop-Start" warning.
There's an Interstate Batteries store about 1.5 miles from my house, and they have the right AGM battery and the aux battery, and they offer free installation. I could certainly do it myself, but if they'll do it for no charge, why not?

Random thought: is it colder by you? How long did you drive it? When it particularly cold, I would think the system would be disabled until the engine is thoroughly warmed up.

We are closing on a Home Equity loan next week. I figured we should get it while the gettin is good. High home value and low interest. When I started the process, the plan was to use the proceeds to buy a shop. If this whole out-of-state thing works, we will instead turn around and build another garage on our property. Was just debating with the wife about where to put it and how large to make it. I figured just put it at the end of the driveway, but she feels that would wind up being too small. I do agree, but the alternative is scary. We have a great deal of space on the other side of the house, but the land is far from flat there and, of course, no driveway currently. So we're talking about a MUCH larger project at that point. But, it would probably be darned nice to have ... oh, I dunno... probably a 35 x 50 building. With three 4-post lifts in the back, we're talking 12 cars with room to spare for tools and workbenches. My plan for the end of the driveway is 30 x 45, which would be tight in the space, but allow for two 4-post lifts, one 2-post lift, space for the Sprinter, and I figure 7 cars, if carefully used.
First is to make sure this whole license thing works, though. So we're talking springtime for construction, most likely.

I have heard that some cars (well, a Mercedes at least) has that 2 battery configuration, to handle the load on the auto start feature, without risking taking out the normal battery. Though I think they hide it in a different place and most owners don't even know they have one. but when they die can cause all kinds of problems.
you want fun, JRgo has gotten a 2005 Bentley with all kinds of messed up wiring and electronics. He did a description of the 2 battery system they have (and pretty sure that is not even an auto stop/start car) and it was hysterical, and very frightening. I could not imagine owning one of those cars if I was not filthy rich. paying to keep it going can eat you alive.
and never, ever, ever buy one that was neglected and has needs (as in not running). Find the rich guy who just paid the dealer a fortune to keep it like new, and pay extra for a good one if you really have to have it.

New refrig died after 5 months. A leaking compressor from the factory was replaced and all is well four months later.
Dishwahser, four tech/plumber visits. Adjustments, parts replaced. Washing on all the highest settings, running hot water first, switched from gel to pod detergent and cleaning dishes before washing, mixed results.
Microwave and oven haven't been an issue. Knock wood paneling.

The range (double ovens) and OTR microwave are cool. The microwave is enormous, and they are Bluetooth connected so fan and light can go on automatically as needed.
These days, I think all refrigerators fail early. Price to pay for the ultra quiet running maybe. I just have no patience for getting one fixed unless under warranty. If it fails, buy a new one!

It lists for about $600 to $800 CDN, $400 to $550 US.
We paid just under $400 CDN or about $280 U.S
I think the plumber gave us a deal because he wanted to do the new sink job as well as he could, and he made enough on the other stuff....or might have been older stock.
MultiGrind lets you quickly grind difficult food waste
SoundSeal makes this disposer at least 40% quieter than standard disposers

They are sold elsewhere too. Look like some other brands, probably like everything else and it’s a subsidiary of a large group and there is lots of rebranding
They are made by Home Depot Pro, which used to be called Interline. That is a company I never heard of before. There is a list on their website of brands they make, none of which I have ever heard of either.

I suppose they could be good, or they could be junky. I am just always suspicious of HD house brand products.

Not bad for 24 years.
Our Jenn-Air, flat top electric cooktop, with downdraft venting is also 24 yrs old. Still going strong. Original garbage disposal, as well. We are on our third refrigerator, second dishwasher, and third washer/dryer set.
Second gas hot water heater (won't be long for this one)
Second HVAC system (gas furnace/central air)
Third garage door opener (2nd door)

I couldn't find that one at Lowes, so I got this one instead. Installed this afternoon.

It lists the same features. AND it was much quieter than previous model.
The sound control is partly due to the design of the rubber ring in the bottom of
the sink. I recall ours needed replacing and there was a redesign on it, so the noise
was a little higher. That rubber ring needs cleaning about once a week. Along with
wiping the inside of the top of the unit while its out. Nasty stuff.
Price was a lot lower when I bought mine, but still pricey.

I have no idea where the receipt is though.

That’s one “tool” I could really use. My collection of tools is plenty for the average DIY homeowner, but I don’t have a decent ladder. I know I couldn’t replace the bulb in my garage with the crappy 6’ one I have.
2025 Ram 1500 Laramie 4x4 / 2023 Mercedes EQE 350 4Matic
When we moved I left my ancient, heavy wood one and bought a higher line aluminum one at lowes. Still 6’ though. Big improvement. I might not be able to reach the garage ceiling either but those are newer led bulbs so hopefully never have to! The longer ones are a bit of a pain to maneuver. Especially inside.
You just need to use your truck. Back that under where the bulb is, and open the ladder up in the bed!

There's an Interstate Batteries store about 1.5 miles from my house, and they have the right AGM battery and the aux battery, and they offer free installation. I could certainly do it myself, but if they'll do it for no charge, why not?

I think @roadburner lives there or around there. But it doesn’t make any difference. Even if he lived next door to @kyfdx it would only take him 42 minutes to get there.

Random thought: is it colder by you? How long did you drive it? When it particularly cold, I would think the system would be disabled until the engine is thoroughly warmed up.

It seems that they like their trucks big in Texas...not sure about the Nissan but it might be full size.

First is to make sure this whole license thing works, though. So we're talking springtime for construction, most likely.

you want fun, JRgo has gotten a 2005 Bentley with all kinds of messed up wiring and electronics.
