I think Mike is doing the right thing with 6 month oil changes.

I didn't mean Mike should avoid oil changes when they are recommended, but I thought that if a Genesis is built to be as good as an equivalent MB, then I thought the engines would be built to the same specs...or close.
    The Genesis recommended oil change is;
When it's time for your next Genesis oil change, don't hesitate to schedule your visit with our service center. Here's how you can tell when it's time for your next Genesis oil change. In general, you should get an oil every 7,000 to 9,000 miles or six months, whichever happens to come first.(7000 to 9000 must be for synthetic)

The MB S550 recommended oil change is:
An oil change is one of the most necessary and necessary services for your car. Synthetic oil frequently should be changed every 7,500 - 10,000 miles. Mercedes-Benz recommends getting your 2021 Mercedes-Benz S 550 oil & filter changed every 3,000-5,000 miles for conventional oil.

It seems that Genesis doesn't really recommend synthetic oil unless you drive your car unusually hard or under extreme conditions.
    Why are these so different?
    Acura: 7,500-10,000 miles

    Audi: 10,000 miles

    BMW: 12,000-15,000 miles

    Buick: 7,500 miles

    Cadillac: 7,500 miles

    Chevrolet: 7,500 miles

    Chrysler: 8,000 miles

    Dodge: 7,500 miles

    Ford: 7,500 miles

    GMC: 7,500 miles

    Honda: 7,500 miles

    Hyundai: 7,500 miles

    Jaguar: 15,000 miles

    Jeep: 5,000-7,500 miles

    Kia: 7,500 miles

    Land Rover: 7,500-10,000 miles

    Lexus: 10,000 miles

    Mazda: 15,000 miles

    Mercedes-Benz: 10,000 miles

    Nissan: 5,000-7,000 miles

    Porsche: 20,000 miles

    RAM: 8,000 miles

    Subaru: 5,000-7,000 miles

    Tesla: You don’t! It’s electric!

    Toyota: 15,000 miles

    Volkswagen: 10,000 miles

    Volvo: 10,000 miles
And if the oil should be changed at say 7500 miles and you only do 5000 miles a year, why would you have to do it at 6 months?
I think those OCI are based on perfect driving conditions: steady highway speeds, no dust, moderate outdoor temperatures. Anything but that is considered “severe” conditions with the corresponding shorter change intervals.

Kia went to a 3750 mile change interval after deciding that most people drove severely.

A used oil analysis could probably tell you exactly when to change but that seems like a lot of extra work. With modern engines using DI, low tension piston rings and turbos, I’d error on the side of caution.

almost nobody does an OCI report. Most people with cars probably have no clue what it is, or how to get it done (and would not pay for it if they did). So car companies have to decide what is important to them. Some want to minimize maintenance costs (oddly, usually the ones that pay for it!) and some are overly conservative to avoid problems for most people.

Hyundai seems to be way on the conservative side of the spectrum. Though their attempt to lump everybody into severe use category seems excessive. When I had mine I just followed the normal use schedule, which was basically a 6 month interval. I would not take one of their engines (or a DI turbo from anyone) much more than 6k miles anyway, which is likely going to hit around the 12 month mark anyway so getting changed regardless then.

I am actually doing the same 6 month interval on the Ford, to avoid any concerns about the DI engine and oil fouling. Plus the first one was covered by the dealer I bought it out, and I got Ford points that should cover the next 4.

Both of my cars get it roughly once a year (although the fintail it may go 18 months or so as it's been tough getting it into a shop). Fintail seldom does more than 1500-2000 miles in a year anymore, and the modern car under 10K .

I assume/hope most modern MB drivers are running full synthetic, the cars are designed for it.

I didn't watch the game and I don't know anything about those two teams. But, I play and watch tennis and pickleball and what I do know is that there is momentum and then there is also no way.

Somedays everything goes right and other days nothing goes right. When we went to Wimbledon this year we saw Serena Williams get beaten by a lucky lose who had never played in a professional match before. The young kid played a very different game, and it through Serena off. It happens all the time, and if it didn't happen, there would be no point in watching the game, since you would know who would have won before it started.

The time based oil changes are what I have trouble with. On my Ford for example, the last oil change was in July 2021 with full synthetic 5-W20. Since then I’ve only driven it 1700 miles and I won’t drive it again until April except for running it once a month in the driveway to keep the battery charged.

I was planning on getting the oil changed in April along with other routine maintenance but it will still have less than 2000 miles on the current oil.

    Is that waiting too long?

I don't have any definitive answers on that one. Both of my vehicles time out before they mile out on the OCI, as I average about 4k on one and 3k on the other, per year.

I think the "time out" is based on factors like condensation, but I really don't have all of the answers. I just do it every year because it seems to me like the right thing to do. YMMV

@oldfarmer50 I agree, I could find lots of information about changing the oil according to miles, but very little having to do with time.
The question that we really need answered is how long the additives in the oil last, because oil probably lasts forever. It doesn't work very well if it is contaminated or if the additives are worn out.
My rule has been to change the oil once a year if I don't reach the mileage for changing oil, which is 10000 miles in all of our MBs. The service manager has never questioned that. But, having said that, the Genesis could go 9000 miles on synthetic, but their time schedule was 6 months, that seems a bit much but they include those in Mikes car for now....might as well do it if they are paying for it.

I hate it when I'm right.

As I sort of expected, I was laid off from my job today. I've known it could happen for a couple of months, but getting the dreaded email, "inviting" you to a call with HR, just made it real.

I've been updating my resume and have applied for a few jobs in the past couple of weeks, but that goes into overdrive (ha, car reference!) now.

I've been through this before, so I'm pretty familiar with what needs to happen, but I've been told that outplacement services are coming my way, so I'll certainly take advantage of that.

Carry on, and we now return you to our regularly scheduled programming....

Good luck in your job search, Michael. I can testify that there is ageism in hiring, most definitely. When I went back to work in 2010, at age 59, I encountered quite a bit of it. I really wasn't expecting it, as I was looking for contract work, and I didn't think age should matter if you're only contracting, but it definitely does.

I had to call in some favors at my old employer to get a job, but that definitely paid off. When I went in for the interview, I met with 3 supervisors who told me upfront that I was getting a job, it was just a matter of which department I wanted to work in. It helps a whole lot when you first talk to a VP whom you trained 20 years earlier.

Are you doing those oil changes and filters early or do they have to be done at 6 months? I know it is wise to do oil changes regularly, but today's engines and with synthetic motor oils should be
good to go for one year or 7500 to 10000 miles.

The C250 goes about 6000 miles a year, and gets an oil change once a year. You can do an oil change as often as you like Mike, but it might not be necessary to do it twice a year with such low mileage.

btw, the C250 will soon be 10 years old late this year and it has 40k miles on it, the dealer said it was just like a new car....which I was surprised to hear from the service manager at the dealer.

I am still under the 3-year complimentary maintenance program. When the car is due for oil changes, I get an alert on my screen in the car - the intervals are set by the service tech based on my driving. Every 3000 miles is about what I end up with.

They use a synthetic blended oil which is why I end up doing it more frequently. When I am off the complimentary maintenance program, I will use full synthetic oil like Mobil One.

I can’t understand why a dealer would play around with a “synthetic blend” on their flagship car. The dealer I take my Genny to uses only full synthetic. Regardless of who’s paying.

Your dealer is a true wannabe outfit.

Sorry to hear of your layoff, Michael. I have faith in you to get back to work quickly because you are intelligent and a possess a humanitarian personality. You will be in my prayers each night!

Thanks, everyone, for your positive thoughts.

I'm not thrilled to be doing this at 59, but my wife has found and sent me a good dozen job postings that seem to fit my skills and experience. The resume and cover letter are current, and I adapt each to the job I'm applying to. Hoping to get some nibbles shortly, and I'm not terribly picky. I figure I've got another 7-10 years left in my career before I can think about retiring.

@driver100, the Edmunds gig is a part-time thing. I have had a full time job in the tech industry, which I've worked in since college.

@stickguy, the studio does OK, but I'm the primary breadwinner in the family. We're in slightly better shape financially now than when this happened 7 years ago, and I don't yet have any details on my severance (I should know that tomorrow or Thursday). So, I'm not overly concerned - yet.

During our recent layoff 4 years and below got four weeks. Anyone over 4 years got a week for each year of employment. I personally thought this was a little light, but I’ve heard other companies do similar things.

Good luck to all that is in that position or has been. I know Michaell and I were displaced around the same time 7 years ago and I had the pleasure of having a conversation with him. A truly nice guy. I know he’ll do well. Being flexible and having a positive can do attitude make all the difference.

Thanks - I've got about 6.5 years with this company. Was hoping for 2 weeks for each year of service, but that may be optimistic.

To be fair....one Genesis dealer said there isn't that much different before regular oil and synthetic, they both do the same, but synthetic lasts longer. Regular is fine, just has to be changed earlier.
Not sure if that is true, but that is what a dealer posted on their website.

Fingers crossed your severance is juicy and you stroll right in to another position. I had to deal with the job seeking mess during the height of covid, that was fun. A positive attitude helps too, and I think you have that.

Ask our poster buddy what happens if you don’t follow the Hyundai / Kia / Genesis service schedule…

I think Mike is doing the right thing with 6 month oil changes.

I didn't mean Mike should avoid oil changes when they are recommended, but I thought that if a Genesis is built to be as good as an equivalent MB, then I thought the engines would be built to the same specs...or close.
    The Genesis recommended oil change is;
When it's time for your next Genesis oil change, don't hesitate to schedule your visit with our service center. Here's how you can tell when it's time for your next Genesis oil change. In general, you should get an oil every 7,000 to 9,000 miles or six months, whichever happens to come first.(7000 to 9000 must be for synthetic)

The MB S550 recommended oil change is:
An oil change is one of the most necessary and necessary services for your car. Synthetic oil frequently should be changed every 7,500 - 10,000 miles. Mercedes-Benz recommends getting your 2021 Mercedes-Benz S 550 oil & filter changed every 3,000-5,000 miles for conventional oil.

It seems that Genesis doesn't really recommend synthetic oil unless you drive your car unusually hard or under extreme conditions.
    Why are these so different?
    Acura: 7,500-10,000 miles

    Audi: 10,000 miles

    BMW: 12,000-15,000 miles

    Buick: 7,500 miles

    Cadillac: 7,500 miles

    Chevrolet: 7,500 miles

    Chrysler: 8,000 miles

    Dodge: 7,500 miles

    Ford: 7,500 miles

    GMC: 7,500 miles

    Honda: 7,500 miles

    Hyundai: 7,500 miles

    Jaguar: 15,000 miles

    Jeep: 5,000-7,500 miles

    Kia: 7,500 miles

    Land Rover: 7,500-10,000 miles

    Lexus: 10,000 miles

    Mazda: 15,000 miles

    Mercedes-Benz: 10,000 miles

    Nissan: 5,000-7,000 miles

    Porsche: 20,000 miles

    RAM: 8,000 miles

    Subaru: 5,000-7,000 miles

    Tesla: You don’t! It’s electric!

    Toyota: 15,000 miles

    Volkswagen: 10,000 miles

    Volvo: 10,000 miles
And if the oil should be changed at say 7500 miles and you only do 5000 miles a year, why would you have to do it at 6 months?
The time based oil changes are what I have trouble with. On my Ford for example, the last oil change was in July 2021 with full synthetic 5-W20. Since then I’ve only driven it 1700 miles and I won’t drive it again until April except for running it once a month in the driveway to keep the battery charged.

I was planning on getting the oil changed in April along with other routine maintenance but it will still have less than 2000 miles on the current oil.

    Is that waiting too long?
I have a feeling for a gently driven car that is stored properly and treated gently, going a couple years on an oil change won't kill it. I am not freaking out about going over a year in the fintail - oil looks fine, and I ensure it is full. I think that counts for more.

@ Michaell @driver100, the Edmunds gig is a part-time thing. I have had a full time job in the tech industry, which I've worked in since college.

The world has really changed. Most of the people I know, who are 60+ worked for the same company or taught or worked for government etc for most of their working life.....and they have a pension that gives them a pretty good lifestyle.

But, these days most companies don't last for 30 or 40 years, and if they do they go through a lot of buyouts and changes.....so not too many people stay with one company any more. It makes it hard to retire with a pension.

These days you have to be flexible and creative, and roll with whatever the situation.
Good luck and stay positive, chances are good you can find something even better, especially in the tech field. Glad you are still here though. :)

Wow. What a horrible college football championship game.

That was indeed a miserable excuse for a football game. Someone needs to explain to me how TCU could actually beat Michigan and then lose so badly the next week to Georgia. I refuse to believe that Georgia is that much better than Michigan. Oh, well.
It's because TCU couldn't make it so they sent the Chicago Bears to play in their place.

So sorry to hear, @Michaell - you have a good attitude about it, though (or rather, you’re putting on a good show). Wishing you all the best on your hunt.

My company is expecting layoffs in the next few weeks - nothing official, of course, but I too am waiting to see if the guillotine gets me. To complicate matters my wife and I work for the same company, so she’s at risk too. She was laid off last fall but found a new role internally, so now we get to do it all over again.
