Looks like Jay Leno got hurt again. He was driving a classic motorcycle and pulled into a parking lot. There was a wire strung across the lot and Leno got clotheslined. He broke a couple of bones.

This used to be normal for laptops / notebooks. These days, very rare, almost unheard of. Now you have to remove the entire back panel. Take out about 10 or 12 tiny screws, then pry off the plastic back panel using small tools that look very much like plastic guitar pics.
And on some laptops, there are one or two screws that have to be removed from the front. You can only access those screws after removing the keyboard. Major PITA. I really miss the days when there were separate small panels on the back to expose the memory and the hard drive.
I need to do some current laptop shopping and turn them over to see what access is on the back. Sounds like things have changed. That means having to order a laptop with all the memory and a larger SSD to avoid difficult DIY replacement a few years later as needs change.
The HP website allows maximizing RAM and storage but seems much pricier than similar machines in box stores like Staples and OD.
Replacing the hard drive on my lapstops is a matter of removing two screws on a rectangular cover. IIRC there is a metal cover on the drive that is held down by two more screws or something. You just have to look at it and don't do anything quickly without being sure it's the right thing. The mechanical drive just unhooked from the two connectors, power and SATA, and it was in there. HOWEVER, I did use a fake external drive connector through the USB to copy the old drive to the new SSD using a program DiskGeniius to adjust the sizes of the partitions as I needed them to fit the new drive's smaller size.
The memory strips are in another rectangular opening and they snap in and out. I watched a few videos on doing the memory changes for HP/Compaq laptops. The memory strips are smaller and more expensive for laptops.

Yep, when I tried my waste of time battery swap on a 2015 laptop, about a dozen tiny hex type screws, pry off the back, then 2 or 3 connections on the battery itself. I remember I had a Toshiba laptop from I think the late 00s that had a battery that just popped out with the slide of a couple levers. IIRC that one had build quality issues, keys would pop off.
This is why getting a laptop with adequate SSD, a lot of memory, and even graphic card already built is the way to go. It seems laptops today or not as easy to access.
It seems like Dennis' whole schtick is telling people that all repair shops and dealers are angels, and that everyone that writes in a letter is a lying [non-permissible content removed].
Dennis does back the garages and dealers quite a bit. But the thing is, usually it is the letter write who is lying their (non-permissible content avoided and not actually used - must use imagination) off.
He almost always backs up the story by finding out what really happened, and usually it is the customer who isn't telling the truth. In this case, it would have made sense for the customer to tell the garage what went wrong....it did not make sense to buy the battery and have it installed somewhere else, and expect the garage to pay for it.
Some laptops are worse than others. I haven't seen a new model with the small separate panels on the back for some time now. They may still exist, I just haven't seen one. But even with that, there are still important differences.
The worst are the modern day Gateways, a couple of which I have recommended on here. They surface mount the memory, it is not upgradeable, at all, period. If you buy a notebook with enough memory (easy to do), then that need not concern you. And most brands, including Gateway, do not charge a lot more for a computer with more memory. The huge exception continues to be Apple. They charge an unconscionable amount for any memory upgrade, be that on a smartphone, a tablet, or a notebook.
And pretty much all modern notebooks do come with an SSD rather than a spinning hard drive. But you might think 256 gigs is sufficient, and in a couple of years need to upgrade, so it does matter how hard it is to perform that operation. The only way to know is to find a tear down video on YouTube and watch. And even that can be deceiving. There are often subtle differences in the model number which make a big difference in the tear down procedure.
The only thing I would watch out for HP these days is their new system of trying to get you to buy a 3 year help/service contract. They make it so that it is almost impossible to get your new PC going without calling the helpline. And then a really nice man or lady comes on to fix your problem, and to clean up your files and see if everything is good. After they set you up they try to get you to buy a service plan......it's a pain. They found another way to make money.
btw I was just reading that chip makers and computer companies are suffering with poor sales right now. There should be some good sales out there.

Well, yes and no (on the "good sales"). When there is a shortage, prices will go up, that's true. But when sales are brisk, and production is keeping up, then prices tend to go down. You can see this in many markets, including the car market.
I took advantage of the low 40s temperatures today and washed the bottom of the cargo van to get the salt off. If you could see the mess that is the undercarriage of this thing you would know why I have such a no rust fetish. The frame still seems to be solid but everything else is ugly.
2019 Kia Soul+, 2015 Mustang GT, 2013 Ford F-150, 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible
I did not realize it was going to get so warm today. I ran through the touchless car wash today because the RDX was out in the salt last week (should have done this a lot sooner but it was snowing every other day). Would have washed it by hand but the carwash has a much better undercarriage spray than me sticking the nozzle blindly underneath the car!
hopefully that does enough to keep it form rotting out.
back to laptops, after a virus scan (removed one phishing PDF) and malware (lots of cookies deleted but nothing scary) and a reboot, seems to be working much smoother. so will probably nurse it along.
I did stop at BJs to look at stuff. Best deal was an HP with an i7 chip, 8/256, regularly $699 on sale for $250. only catch, it was the display model, and I preferred to not buy that. other option for $399 was a new in box i5 chip 8/256.
I am still amazed that I see some computers coming with both old hard drives and solid state drive combos. I believe for MAC computers can get away with 512 SSD. I believe windows based should try to get 1TB SSD.

Actually rising sales would put pressure on prices going up unless there is a corresponding increase in production. This is because when demand goes up people are willing to pay more for the product in order to get the product and producers will see an opportunity to charge more. An equilibrium will soon occur where the price point comes to the position where the amount that consumers will buy equals what the producers are willing to produce at that price.
However when sales go down the opposite will happen. Suppliers will drop prices to a point where is equilibrium is achieved at a price where consumers are willing to buy all that the producers are willing to produce.
Its called the laws of supply and demand.

How low? Try this. When I was working for Sprint back in the day when we had dummy phones on display to show the customers, many of those dummy phones had dummy batteries that were removable just like the real ones were. Occasionally a dummy battery would go missing and a few days later someone would try to return it saying that it didn't work.

What vehicles did you work on? Any special tools needed? Busted knuckles and select words?
This is me attempting to get the ESC light off in the Pajero so I can put it on C&B. No special tools. Well... depends what you consider special. Is a hand-held torch special? Those front ones are just jammed in there. I don't know why they need to be so tight. Took everything I had to extract them, and putting in the new ones required judicious use of a hammer. Acura really did make it more complicated with the new design (I pulled up a couple videos to make sure I was not confused).
new one, have to pull off a plastic cover from the front part of the engine compartment (a bunch of snaps). then find some plastic snorkel, which has a couple of those dump push pin fasteners to remove, then have to yank it out. that lets you get to the air box, which has 4 bolts buried pretty low down. Once those are out, you can finally pop the top off and get to the filter.
on the prior version, air filter box is top front. pop down 2 metal clips, pop up the side, swap filter, resnap. 30 seconds max, and nothing to break or lose.

Our Enclaves had a tricky air filter design too. Wasn’t particularly hard, just a lot of fasteners and had to remove a few hoses. Much more complicated than most.

Maintainability appears to be about 50th on the list of priorities for the people responsible for designing today's cars. That said, I'm certainly pleased with the Forester's oil filter placement - on top, front and center, sitting on a plate that confines the spillage.
I’m so old that I remember back in the ‘70s when some U.S. automakers made a big deal about designing their cars to have “serviceability” features to make it easy for owners to fix minor issues themselves. I guess not many care to do that now.

On my motorcycle I have to take off all the farings off which basically means I have to disassemble half the front of the bike to get to the air filter.

new one, have to pull off a plastic cover from the front part of the engine compartment (a bunch of snaps). then find some plastic snorkel, which has a couple of those dump push pin fasteners to remove, then have to yank it out. that lets you get to the air box, which has 4 bolts buried pretty low down. Once those are out, you can finally pop the top off and get to the filter.
on the prior version, air filter box is top front. pop down 2 metal clips, pop up the side, swap filter, resnap. 30 seconds max, and nothing to break or lose.

Thanks. I like the simplicity of the C250, it is actually refreshing for a change from the E. And I was in a guys SUV, a new GLE I guess, and it has all of these controls that would take months to learn how to use. Mercedes, turn on passenger massage, Mercedes, open the sun roof, er...I mean shade, Mercedes, please heat the driver seat...........who needs all that crap?

Our Enclaves had a tricky air filter design too. Wasn’t particularly hard, just a lot of fasteners and had to remove a few hoses. Much more complicated than most.

But, that's rare these days -- sad.
I’m so old that I remember back in the ‘70s when some U.S. automakers made a big deal about designing their cars to have “serviceability” features to make it easy for owners to fix minor issues themselves. I guess not many care to do that now.
