I don’t care much for what a license plate looks like nor will I have a personalized one. All it does is register you with the DMV which I understand is necessary.

When this first started happening NY hatched upon a scheme to charge you $25 to replace them. There was such a public outcry that they did it deliberately as a money grab or that the defect was caused by giving the paint contract to an incompetent buddy that they dropped the fee lest someone start investigating.

Probably a "brother in law" type contract going to a relative or friend, maybe the same with some road construction bids. WA has the same issue with delaminating plates, but I've never heard of anyone getting in trouble for keeping them on their car - enforcement of most traffic regulations is very lax in some areas.

WA has had the same basic plate with minor font or slogan changes ("Evergreen State" replaced "Centennial Celebration" after the 1989 event) since the 80s. It's inoffensive. There are also numerous specialty plates, but I have never been tempted (and any personalized plate I would choose no doubt would not make it past the pearls-clutching puritanical censors doing such good work keeping society safe and sound):

My brother just finished doing my 2022 federal taxes using TurboTax. Already received notification that my tax return was accepted by the IRS. Glad to get that off my shoulders.

Refund should enable me to buy a laptop and printer since my 10 year old computer finally went kaput.

When I was early in my driving career (or avocation) each state had a single color scheme for their license plates and kept it for years. This was when CA had black plates w/ yellow lettering. You could tell from a hundred yards away what state the vehicle in front of you was from. I thought that was a pretty useful arrangement, and I wasn't even in law enforcement.

Well those days are so gone. AZ currently offers a choice among 93 (I just checked) options in a wide variety of color combinations. Oh boy. Other states & provinces may not have such a ridiculous number of options, but there appear to be several at least.

And, by the way, get off my lawn, and drive your cars somewhere already.

Got that annoying "SOS" icon yesterday morning, so had no cell service. Could only use wifi but no calls in/out or messages either. Happened a couple weeks ago but went away after a couple of hours. By lunchtime still had no service, so we stopped by the AT&T store. Turns out it was a sim card issue so now have an e-sim in my phone and all is back to normal. I thought it had something to do with our new data plan which started yesterday but that wasn't the case.
It did create another issue on the phone dealing with an icon I couldn't remove. Called Apple tech support and the lady who helped me had never seen this issue before but with some help with her co-workers and their manual, she got the icon to finally disappear. I did have to give her access to my phone during the call. Was happy with the outcome as I had already set up an appointment at the Apple store in Boca Raton for this morning. Cancelled it once I had phone service again.
At work, need to have my GPS available since we go to some places I need directions to. Having a smart phone with GPS is a job requirement which makes sense. Definitely need it working. Luckily, Apple support is great. Stopped by the AT&T after work last night and the guy was clueless and told me to go to Apple for any help!

It seems to be a common problem. Several Canadian provinces had a similar problem including Nova Scotia where I am. Seemed to be a bad batch made in 2008. Here the DMV replaced the plates gratis.

I've seen pics of peeling Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland plates too. They aren't painted - the colors and characters are a 3M film, which is what failed.

This morning shortly after I got up, the smoke alarms started blaring.
They were really loud, probably woke up the neighbors.
I found a detector that had a yellow status light, so decided to change the batteries in it.
Tested the old ones and got some strange readings then tested the new ones and got strange readings for those, too.
Installed the new ones and light was still yellow. After pushing the test button status went to green.
Maybe the batteries on my tester are going bad, so I decide to replace those.
Put in the new ones and it doesn't work at all.
Reinstall the old ones and it is at least functioning again. Test the old detector batteries and they test good(have a 2028 date on them).
Test the batteries that didn't work at all in the battery tester and they test good.
Weird, but it's quiet.

Got home from vacation at 1:10 AM, a few weeks ago, and one of our detectors was chirping. Not the ideal time. ZZZZZZ

It seems those detectors always start chirping in the middle of the night waking everyone up. More than once I've retrieved the ladder from the garage in the early am 3 ish ?? to replace the battery to quiet the thing.

Does anyone actually ever test those smoke detectors every month like they tell you to do?
And what about vacuuming them too, like they say to do?
And yes, they must have a chip that tells them to only go off during the night...on a night when I am actually sound asleep.

Our smoke hard wired detector has gone off when a spider gets inside and crosses the beam. That doesn’t explain why one set of good batteries works and not the other. Hit it with a hammer and see if that helps. 😙

Do battery testers have batteries themselves? I own one, small cheap handheld thing that appears to work okay, but it never crossed my mind that it contained batteries itself. I know a VOM contains batteries, but my understanding was that the batteries in a VOM were only used for measuring resistance.

Our smoke detectors are hard wired together with battery backup, but they will chirp when the battery runs down.
This morning was not some chirping, they all went off.

I don’t test them monthly, but definitely vacuum them when I clean the return air ducts.

The guy during the first trip to AT&T couldn't fix the second issue as he'd never seen it before. He was able to get me phone service by putting a e-sim card in my iPhone. That small icon that also had cropped up was another issue which is why I went to the AT&T store by my house after work. That second guy was clueless & told me I'd have to go to the Apple store. The tech support lady I got when I called Apple also had no idea what that strange icon was but after letting her into my phone & getting some of her co-workers involved, we were able to get that annoying icon to disappear for good. Was able to cancel my appointment at the Apple store on Saturday which I was happy to do.
Now, phone gets a signal and is back to acting normally again. Was just a royal pain to not have service when I need my phone at work.

I have a handicapped license plate on my VW and also a blue handicapped placard for when I go in the Audi or my kid's Hyundai. Just makes parking a bit easier for me when out shopping. Most days walking is hard for me due to the constant pain in my back & left leg so am happy to have either aide to park closer. To be totally honest, wish I didn't have the need for either of them but that's just not my world anymore, or at least since mid 2005. But such is life & try to deal with it as best I can.

I just got this video of a guy who shows an invoice from the dealer....they recommend that he change his cabin air filter...........total cost including labor would be $140.
Then he shows you how he ordered one for $15, and how he installed it himself in about 45 seconds and saved $125. It went in behind the glove box - do they still call it that?

I found a fix for that. I take the batteries out before going to bed.

That’s an incorrect understanding. Every VOM I’ve ever had (have at least 4 of them now) required a good battery to power the VOM circuitry for correct operation of all ranges.

Plus the 45 minutes he spent on YouTube, figuring out access to behind the glovebox?

And, the pure luck of having a car that didn't entail 30 minutes for removal and replacement of said glovebox?

And, the carcinogenic material that his knockoff cabin filter is made from? (okay, I made that one up).
