at ———————————————— Thanks for linking that but I should have mentioned I saw that. The way I look at it is, if I’m going to use that gizmo I might as well go whole hog and mount a box under the sink since the existing wire is plenty long enough to do that.
Thanks again.

Small sample point, but our GE fridge and dishwasher both came defective from the factory; blame covid.
Fridge had a slow refrigerant leak, eventually it became summer in the fridge and freezer as compressor failed. Took a while for new compressor to arrive, luckily, we had another fridge in the garage.
Dishwasher didn't really wash dishes, we were told to wash them by hand and then put them in the dishwasher. Um, perhaps you don't know how this works... Several service visits, changing to pod detergent, and probably the true culprit, a new turbidity sensor has made it more effective. Not nearly as good as our old dishwashers, but the price of efficiency and water conservation.
Loved our silent Bosch and Kitchen Aid, our GE is also very quiet.

Also, the Bosch does not have a separate heating element like most domestic brands.
———————————————— The first dishwasher we ever had was a Kitchen Aid that I installed in our first house in the early 70’s. That dishwasher didn’t have a heating element either in the bottom like you see today. It had a heating element mounted in a metal box with a fan under the dishwasher that blew warm air for drying the dishes. I never had a problem with it and we had that dishwasher until we moved in 1989. So I know that old technology works well.

The GE in our house was garbage. Never worked that great (the old Kenmore at our previous house was much better) and it died at less than three years old
Hey ab. There has been major flooding going on in Halifax these days....how are you managing ab?
Yes, I posted about that on the weekend but nobody commented on it.
Fine in the urban part of the city where I am. Big problems out in the suburban areas that have been built up over the last few decades and especially in rural parts where roads and bridges were near hills and ditches that made the water build up quickly, or near rivers and streams and ponds that rapidly overflowed due to major runoff from surrounding areas. It is tempting to say things like culverts weren't built very well but I suspect no engineer would ever have sized them for rainfall of this magnitude. It was a very powerful rain system with extremely heavy rainfall that went on and off for hours. It seemed spotty, with some locations getting a reported 4 inches, but others apparently getting 8 to 10 inches in less than a day during lengthy thunderstorms. As of last reports 4 people are still missing.
^Somebody captured a video of this as it occurred. The cowboy firefighter driving this pumper truck drove into that water at a pretty good speed and it killed it.
^^ Downtown Halifax near the harbour, almost at sea level, so that's where water wants to go.
^^ The main CN rail line connecting Halifax to the rest of Canada.
^^ The suburban area of Bedford and Sackville which floods fairly often, but obviously not like this.

I'd heard that NS got 3 months of rain in 3 days....
So… does everyone want some laughter at my expense?
At the shore we have six units. Every unit has interconnected smoke/CO alarms and then each of the three common hallways also has a detector linked.
We just had our yearly inspection and after that the common hallway unit was beeping low battery. It was installed in 2019 and is a “10 year” unit. LOL so much for that.
I ordered the newest version of the same brand. It installed in two minutes since the connector was the same. Ran it through the two steps of programming (ignored the app setup) and all was good.
Well 30 seconds after I sit down to go back to work. I hear chirping again… inside my house. I’m staring at each detector and keep hearing the chirping. I go downstairs to the garage, upstairs to listen at my neighbor’s door but still hearing chirping.
I’m about to go out of mind since I hear chirping but not from any visible unit. It then dawned on me that it was the old unit chirping in the trash. There is a hidden switch to permanently disable it.
My two minute job turned into 30 minutes of frustration because I didn’t read the back of the old one.
Going on a quick road trip Wed-Thurs; ~270 miles round-trip mostly highway. Normally, I'd take the A7 as that is its forte, but think I'll take the M240 this time. See how it does as a cruiser. Humidity is supposed to be a killer as the week progresses, still hope to do some topless miles!

If anything, the AC won't have to work as hard, as the interior of the M240 is considerably smaller than the A7.
@ab348 That is devistating, what a disaster! I am repeating but in case you missed it: ,, a week and a half ago we were on our way to Wimbledon, with a one hour stop in Halifax, on Air Canada. Air Canada said the plane needed 3 new tires (do planes get flat tires just before a trans ocean trip?). We wait 2 hours. After 2 hours we get on, and go to the runway, and wait 1 hour and then they tell us a passenger was sick and had to be removed. Then wait 30 minutes for them to find his luggage. Then wait 30 minutes while they try to land at Heathrow after curfew, they close at 11:30 p.m. They tell us there will be a flight but all hotels are booked up. We don't want to sleep at the airport. We fly back to Toronto on Porter Airways. We find out after the sick person was drunk out of their mind, and was sick all over. Air Canada will give us a full refund. I am battling with the insurance company over compensation for flight back and hotel. Glad that our flight wasn't during the rain....we would be stuck in Halifax for over a week!
Love our Kitchen Aid! I would think a higher end Whirlpool would be a touch cheaper and more or less equivalent.
I have no experience with Bosch, but I do know they make a “junction box cord” that will allow you to hardwire them without adding an outlet under the sink
One thing I’ll say is… expect longer run times from the new units. The 11 year old Frigidaire at the shore runs a full cycle in 90 mins or so. The KA at home is about double that.
We went from a Bosch to a KitchenAid; it's the first time I replaced a German product with an American product. I doubt if that will ever carry over to my vehicle purchases...

Ha ha !! So true
My neighbors think I’m borderline nuts at the shore. I cobbled together a receiver, some old small Pioneer bookshelves along with a hidden subwoofer in the storage room in my garage. They look at the little speakers and are bewildered at how much sound they produce. I’m always rocking out when cleaning up from the beach or doing the cars!
Back on the other topic… I needed to redeem myself after the fire alarm fiasco and I installed a new fan and light kit. Hunter brand super cheap on Amazon. One hour flat including taking the old one down and taking out the trash for the week. Nothing blew up and it doesn’t shake. I’ll call that a win
It replaced a very nice higher end fan… but it just didn’t match our decor at all.
I may go back up and see if I can adjust the little tabs the canopy attach to. There is a slight gap between it and the ceiling.

I’ve got a Carver 6250 stereo receiver which uses Bob Carver’s proprietary Magnetic Field Amplifier design(140 watts per channel into 4 ohms) and a pair of ADC 303AX speakers that I’m installing in the downstairs garage when I get things organized. Life’s not only too short to drive boring cars- it’s also too short to listen to low(or no) fidelity audio.

Looks like I'm going to need hearing aids but just not sure what to do. The unit I tried at the audiologists office worked pretty good but it was the high end model. Even she agreed that the middle model would work for me though she termed them as good, better & best. Luckily my federal health insurance helps with the cost. Since I won't put little things in my ears, part of this unit sits on top of it which felt fine. Did hear better for that 20 minutes that I was wearing them though. Just need to weigh this all out. This getting older stuff is more complicated then I ever thought!

If that doesn’t work try some caulk. As they say in the trades, “do your best and caulk the rest”.

There will be no caulk! Either I’ll live with it or try and fix it the right way. There was a little dip in the ceiling around the box and I may have torqued the bracket down a bit too much causing it to bow a touch. I figure I’d rather have it ultra secure with a little gap, than the opposite.

We've had great service from Whirlpool and Maytag (owned by WP) before that.
Bought at Lowes.
————————————————
I went to the mom/pop repair and appliance store today. No surprise they like Bosch and Kitchen Aid. What did surprise me is they carry a Turkish brand I never heard of called Beko which the guy felt was very good too. He also said he liked Maytag and admitted they, Whirlpool and Kitchen Aid are made at the same factory. More surprisingly he gave me the model number of a Maytag unit that he thought was very good but said they don’t carry that model because most of their customers want the more top of the line models of whatever brand they buy at his place.
So I went to Lowe’s and almost side by side I saw a Maytag and Kitchen Aid. The insides were identical right down to the last stampings of the stainless steel interior and door panel. And believe it or not the Maytag unit I compared to the Kitchen Aid was the very same model number he gave me. So, I bought it. 600 bucks before tax and the extended 5 year warranty. Since I think dishwashers are the least reliable kitchen appliance, I get the extended warranty on dishwashers. It paid off with the 13 year old Samsung that just died. Needed the pump assembly replaced twice with that beast when it was around 3 years old. Call me a sucker but that’s how I plan to always buy dishwashers.
Time will tell how good the Maytag is. However, if it lasts 13 years I’d be amazed.

Our GE Profile dishwasher is very surely on the outs. It’s 12 years old (original to the house), does a terrible job cleaning dishes at this point, and recently I found water leaking from the bottom of the door during a cycle.
However, me being me, I disassembled the entire thing - checked every part, cleaned every surface, lubricated all the gaskets and seals (replacing a couple), and then reassembled. So far we aren’t leaking anymore. Dishes are slightly cleaner. I’m sure I’ll find the door blown off and my dishes shattered sometime this week for tempting fate.
I have a Bosch 800 series that I have my eye on that happens to be in stock at my favorite appliance place.

I did new seals on the Frigidaire at the shore. Took all of 20 minutes and I figured if that extends the time, I’ll call it a win. Once in awhile the controls go wonky and it needs a breaker reset.

Everything I’ve touched in this place electrical wise has been something. Went to swap a switch to a dimmer and they must have nicked a wire on install and it broke off deep in the box. Luckily there was just enough to splice it back on.
The metal fan box I just worked on had a sketchy ground connection that had to be redone.
I hope it’s just a coincidence that and not a more widespread problem. Everything works without issue so it may be.
It could be worse… my entire primary house the electricians backstabbed every device and I’ve already had to pull a few out and convert it to the (proper) screw down connections. I can’t believe a large builder like Ryan homes allows this practice by electricians. Backstabbed outlets and switches should be illegal. I also don’t like those Wago wire nut things either. Don’t trust them. This is what happens when you are taught by an old school electrician (Grandfather).

Yeh, and the Alexa is great for active people like me who don't have time to sit around and listen to music for long periods of time.
Have you ever seen the holes in the back of an outlet? These are push to connect terminals. Not very reliable and known to cause arcing and fires.
At some point I’m going to have to go room by room and change all mine over. That will take a long amount of time, but make me feel better.
Thanks. Now I understand what the term meant.
I prefer the tightened screws against the copper as well. I switched some over here in our house when I upgraded the wall sockets in some locations to a heavier duty item than the $.19 basic bulk product they sell at the box stores. Then I felt better plugging in a 15 amp vacuum or other heavy draw appliance.
A few years ago I was changing a ceiling light in my 1950s house. The old fixture may have been original for all I know.
When I dropped it and went to disconnect what I thought were the Marrette connectors, I discovered what must have been the type of wire nuts that were used back then. These are super-secure and I was impressed by their quality. Later I discovered that they still make them and thy are sold as "anti-vibration" connectors.
I did about an acre and a half of field I’m reclaiming from overgrowth. My slash/burn/mow strategy is starting to show results. I use the old mower in case I hit a root or stump so I don’t break the new one. Good thing too because as I was starting on the next field with the new tractor the tire went flat way too far out for any electric lead and pump to reach. I had to take the wheel off to get some air in it.
My normal procedure would be to lift the tractor and kick a log under the frame to get the tire off. That was a lot tougher than I remember. Either John Deere made their tractors a lot heavier than other brands or I’m not as young as I thought.
Yeah, this tractor was heavier, I’m going with that.

———————————————— Oh man, when a wire breaks off deep in the box that’s a scary thing when you know the consequences. I’ve had that happen a few times and a cold sweat starts. If the break is deep enough that you can’t use the traditional wire nut to make the splice, this a good place to use one of those Wago connectors that you and I don’t like but it’s better than cutting into the wall to see if you can find some slack in the wire.

Of course this type provides that black insulating cap too, but instead of gripping the wires themselves to hold it in place, it has threads that mate with ones on the brass screw connector to do that for you. But as you say, the screw connection for the wires makes for a very secure connection.

The AAA did a study to see if speed increase and/or reductions causes or lessens the number of accidents.
Here's the conclusion: The news gets even worse for all the safety mavens advocating for reduced speed limits. For one thing, the mean speed on roads with lower limits actually went up, albeit a miniscule 0.4 mph. Worse yet, the only locale where then mean speed decreased significantly — minus 1.5 miles per hour — was the highway where the speed limit was reduced by 10 mph, and crash occurrences increased.
Simply put, if the study has any veracity at all, the specific speed limit of your local highway has very little influence on whether you’ll be in a car crash or not. But it will dramatically affect how generously you will fatten the pockets of your local constabulary and insurance broker. I’m pretty sure that wasn’t the conclusion the AAA was looking for, but it is the one that stands out.

My brother just took delivery of his 2024 Mercedes GLE 53 AMG. He said he really loves it. Gray with black plush leather. It’s really loaded up with everything. I just hope he enjoys this one - it has the ventilated seats and Distronic automated cruise which he really wanted (his 2023 didn’t have those options). It also has the acoustic package.

Thanks for linking that but I should have mentioned I saw that. The way I look at it is, if I’m going to use that gizmo I might as well go whole hog and mount a box under the sink since the existing wire is plenty long enough to do that.
Thanks again.

Never mind...looks like while I've been gone Edmunds won't allow video links anymore?
Shoot! I would have loved to see that!
You should be able to at least copy the link text directly. I just did it over in CCBA this morning.
Not sure if you saw but I picked up this Adcom stack a few months ago.

The first dishwasher we ever had was a Kitchen Aid that I installed in our first house in the early 70’s.

Is that good or bad?
The GE in our house was garbage. Never worked that great (the old Kenmore at our previous house was much better) and it died at less than three years old

The
cowboyfirefighter driving this pumper truck drove into that water at a pretty good speed and it killed it.^^ Downtown Halifax near the harbour, almost at sea level, so that's where water wants to go.
^^ The main CN rail line connecting Halifax to the rest of Canada.
^^ The suburban area of Bedford and Sackville which floods fairly often, but obviously not like this.

Ha ha !!

Backstabbed? What does that mean?
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
Have you ever seen the holes in the back of an outlet? These are push to connect terminals. Not very reliable and known to cause arcing and fires.
Here is an example:
At some point I’m going to have to go room by room and change all mine over. That will take a long amount of time, but make me feel better.

2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
When I dropped it and went to disconnect what I thought were the Marrette connectors, I discovered what must have been the type of wire nuts that were used back then. These are super-secure and I was impressed by their quality. Later I discovered that they still make them and thy are sold as "anti-vibration" connectors.

————————————————Oh man, when a wire breaks off deep in the box that’s a scary thing when you know the consequences. I’ve had that happen a few times and a cold sweat starts. If the break is deep enough that you can’t use the traditional wire nut to make the splice, this a good place to use one of those Wago connectors that you and I don’t like but it’s better than cutting into the wall to see if you can find some slack in the wire.
jmonroe
'18 Legacy Limited with 3.6R (Mrs. j's)
That’s a new one on me but I can see the value of it if there isn’t enough wire to twist them together before using the traditional screw on wire nut which really serves as an insulating cap after making a secure connection by twisting the wires together.
