I have been reading on line that Toyota has made a huge solid state battery breakthrough. New battery is half the size, weight, and cost of old battery, and will provide around 800 mile range and can be charged in 10 minutes. Little to no fire danger. Will hit the market 2027. If true, that is game over for I.C.E.
My questions would be 1.) how many miles can you get on those batteries, 2.) does that fast charge harm those solid state batteries and 3.) can the electrical grid and infrastructure actually deliver 800 miles worth of juice in 10 minutes?

Electrical infrastructure (especially for those who rent), element availability and where they're currently mined (and by whom), among other things, will provide years of entertainment.
Party on!
I thought about that also, enough electricity to go around (and the cost).
Small footprint nuclear power is the answer.
Good luck with that, to many environmental groups will fight you and you will spend years in court getting things sorted out and even then you may not get approval.

When I’m visiting home, I’ll usually have Wawa for lunch every day. It’s quick, easy, and tasty and generally costs what it would take to feed myself something I want to eat.
I remember seeing Wawa's when I visited NJ for business and to see family. Don't recall ever eating there, however.
They have them in Florida, at least in the Tampa area. They are nice, big, clean and the food looks good....but when possible I eat or bring my own, I am trying to cut down on mass produced processed food as much as possible.
I hate to break up the culinary discussion with an automotive post, but this morning I was in Louisville for a campaign event so I drove the C43; on the way back to the office I took a familiar on-ramp at double the posted advisory speed. The C43 simply shrugged it off- no tire squeal and very little body roll.
Color me extremely impressed.
I took a 45 posted ramp at 75 today in a Mommy mobile. Does that count for anything 😜😜😜😜😜
Sure- you are doing better than 95% of the so-called "drivers" that I encounter.
Tell me about it. On my way to work the route I normally take has this one rather long curve, this curve was created to take the road around a land fill which is now just a large hill with a nice little overlook on top. The length of the curve is somewhere between half and 2/3rds of a mile so it's really not a tight curve and the speed limit is 45. Every now and again I get behind so "performance" vehicle that's doing well under the speed limit. Now here is the thing, at one end of this road is a quarry and trucks full of stone travel this road and these truck often take this curve at 50+. So if a dump truck carrying tons of gravel can do 50 why does the Audi have to do 40? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That 45 mph limit is for the lowest common denominator vehicle....like a liquid gas tanker that will explode on impact if it turns over on the curve. Probably in case of an accident and impending litigation.

Picked up an Audi Q50 yesterday and within a mile, the coolant light came on so back to the branch it went. Seems that had the Q50 and a Q30 and forgot which one had the coolant issue. Put me into a 2022 Kia Sorrento and I was on my way. A base model but was very nice all the same.

Well my guess is the 45MPH is not due to the lowest common denominator vehicle as I have been behind fully loaded dump trucks doing close to 60 MPH. The issue there is that it is going through forested areas where you have rather large forest dwelling animals who dart across open areas avoiding other large forest dwelling animals that want to eat them. Add to that the numerous hikers, bikers and joggers who think every car on the road will stop suddenly for them to cross the street makes for slower speeds.
There are other factors that determine a safe speed other than the road and the vehicles on it.

After 28 years I still love to drive the Club Sport; it only has 150 hp, but I never feel like it needs more power (although that would be nice). It still has the original coolant hoses and water pump, so I suppose I'm tempting fate- but it kept up with traffic (80-90 mph) with no drama, the motor happily spinning at 4,000-4,500 rpm. No trophy at Keeneland, but we still had a great time- and it attracted at least as much attention as the more exotic cars in the Youngtimers class.

I have a fairly severe case of Crohn’s Disease, thankfully well managed of late, and have needed a colonoscopy annually for the last 17 years or so to track disease progression and monitor for cancer. This year’s is tomorrow.
So, I’m here to remind all of you past a certain age, if you have been putting it off because you’re afraid of the prep or the procedure, don’t - it really is no big deal and it could save your life. I have lots of pro tips for managing both if you need them.

@28firefighter - while I don't suffer from Crohn's, I second your comments. I've had two (one at 50, another at 55), and I'll likely get a third early next year, after I turn 60. Prep for the first one was pretty bad - while I thought I knew what to expect, I didn't. The process for the second one went much better - my wife shared a few tips with me.
The procedure is pretty benign; get sedated, then wake up when it's all done.
I’ve had 2. Not that bad IMO. And prep has improved. Wife has had more because of family history.
I second the PSA too. She started early because her mother died way too young (in her mid 60s) from colon cancer And never had a scope until way too late, and apparently ignored symptoms. So get the preventive ones done and if something seems wrong, get it checked.
I had one 3-4 years ago. I gather the prep can happen in a couple of different ways but here they use what is likely the cheaper of the two given the Canadian health system, involving drinking a concoction of purgatives several times over a number of hours and fasting for a length of time. When everything breaks loose it is not pretty and by the end of it I felt like my nether regions were on fire. The last of it unexpectedly occurred after I thought it was finally over and done with, while I was gowned up waiting to be called into the room for the procedure - thank goodness there was a washroom right there. No fun.
In my case I had a battle with the doctor involved since I am on a regimen of blood thinners and anti-clotting drugs because of my afib, and so was concerned about the procedure causing internal bleeding. It's just great when one medical specialty says "don't do it" while another says "bah, no problem". I wish they would just talk to each other and agree on a course of action.
I had not been given any of those tips you guys talk about so it would be good to share them.
Every time why wife had one, the prep regiment was different. Changed the product (for the better), volume and how often took it. Will always have the no food for a day or so component.
They have added lots of options over the years, but their core items are from the deli. Hoagies and sandwiches are their best offerings in my opinion. Of course their coffee is great too.

I concentrate on the positive for the colonoscopy, they give me a delicious muffin after it's done! I had two in '21; the first showed polyps, which were removed. The second, three months later, was to confirm no return, confirmed. And, muffin! Prep is no fun.

Most folks have to take one of the liquid based preps because (1) that’s what insurance covers, and (2) it ensures you drink enough to make the prep effective and not destroy your kidneys.
As a frequent flyer I’ve been allowed to do pill based preps, but it requires strict adherence to the fluid intake guidelines to prevent the bad side effects.
I’ve done all of them and I can say categorically the worst was GoLightly.

That's funny, and shows how "dumb" autonomous driving is. I do think, however, the people wasting resources and time doing this would be much more utilitarian doing the same thing to drivers that are paying attention to their cell phones rather than driving.
This would force the cellphone driver to get out of their seat and remove the cone, or they might drive around with the cone on their hood.

signage also needs to be for lowest common denominator vehicle. If 95% of traffic is normal sedans, CUVs, etc. the limit will be based on that. Of course a Z06 or 911 can go a whole lot faster but the sign would be way too crowded if they had to list every kind of vehicle with a different speed.
It's not only the vehicle but the driver, an excellent driver who knows his vehicle in a minivan might be able to out do a crappy driver in the 911. You have to know your limits and the limits of the car, and never trust a curve you don't know.
I am now commuting to work on a single lane in each direction highway and the under posted limit is 55 where even a fully loaded truck could probably do 65 without causing a hazard.
I've seen people in reasonably capable vehicles drive 5, 10, and 15 under. No passing lanes.

In my research one of those factors is most definitely revenue generation, and targeted extra heavy enforcement (likely to meet a monthly quota in a day or two). Of course, they are not determining a "safe speed" just a "lucrative speed."

I have not yet had a colonoscopy but I would echo the comments about not putting off anything that involves your GI tract, or health wise in general, because of the irreparable or even deadly harm procrastination can do. My tendency to downplay or outright dismiss red flags my body was throwing out lead to 3 endoscopies over 3 months and a diagnosis of Barret's esophagus as well as eosinophilic esophagitis. I now have a yearly endoscopy and biopsies done and am on a lifetime of Protonix medication. On the positive side it resulted in a number of dietary changes that are truly for the best.

Well now...this cast of characters hasn't changed since last I walked in to this den of inequity.
Everybody good? Hope so!
Thought about you guys this a.m. and thought I'd drop by.
Too much to catch up on.
Working a little for my old company on a contract basis. Trying to do less and less of that given that's the opposite of me retiring. Still, pretty much can pick and choose when and where I work, and for how long. Eventually they're going to tell me to take a hike and that I'm A) charging them too much, and not the most reliable person these days.
Let's see, flipped my 1 year old '22 Honda Accord Hybrid for the '23 version. They gave me $1,700 for the privilege. I still don't know how that nets them a profit. But, that was the 4th car I had done that with (Stinger and TLXs before that). '23 version is the redesign and is better in every way. It's not a sports car. But, it's probably the most comfortable car I've ever owned. My aging poster appreciates that. I can't think of any other option they could put in it. I've got as high as 48 MPG and as low as 44 MPG. Built very well.
Just flipped a '63 Chevy Bel Air with a 283 V8, 2 sp auto trans and that's it. No radio. No PS or PB. But, aside from its age, was in great shape. No rust. Only reason I bought it was because it was the car I learned to drive on. My Dad had it and sold it a long, long time ago. Long boring story, but it stayed in the town I grew up in. Not sure how many owners it had. But, someone I went to HS with found me on Linked In and told me about it. I went to look at it. And, via my Dad's hoarding ways when he was alive, actually had a record of its VIN. Same one.
You realize how mechanical those cars are/were and how involved you had to be driving them (even an automatic). You have to plan to make a turn and stop, where now, it's just a simple, quick, mindless maneuver.
Drove it a lot until last year. Then, it languished. Sold it a few months ago and made a couple of bucks. Fun car, but not a classic. Aside for sentimentality, there was nothing to make me keep it.
Tired to buy an Acura Integra 6-speed a couple of months ago. Even my old dealership was trying to gouge me on it. So, I took a pass. My old Acura dealership sold out to my old Kia dealership owner group. What used to be a great dealership experience has turned into the dreaded Kia experience. So, not good.
Acura GM (who is still the same guy I used to deal with) said it was going to be a "hot" commodity. I told him I doubted it given it was a hand shaker. 2 months later, it's still sitting there. No desire to see if I could snag it for a nice price.
Took an Alaska cruise this past Fall. Loved it. Going to Italy with the sisters and son for a month in October. Really looking forward to that.

Just make sure you say “this butt’s for you” when you turn up on your side just before the colonoscopy 😂
Where in the h--- have you been?
Doing anesthetics for colonoscopies and EGDs😂
Sounds like fun!
I came out of my colonoscopy a bit early, I guess the anesthetic wore off sooner than expected. When I started to gain consciousness it sounded like a party was going on in the room. There I am with my my butt exposed for all the world to see, and there are about 6 people standing around joking about what great parties they had planned for the weekend.
I may have been premature last week in declaring the flooding in Vermont to be overhyped by the press. Of course it was but that was overlaid on some real destruction. So much so that FEMA has booked 100 cars from the company for up to 90 days as they assess all the damage. We’ve been spending the better part of a week collecting and delivering vehicles to Burlington which has the only airport big enough to fly into.
We did 600 miles today and I’m sure that will be repeated by a number of teams trying to play catch up on the demand.

I received an email from one of the Inns we enjoy in Ludlow. They're fine, but they note that Ludlow and Proctorsville are not:
"They called the flooding from "Irene" in 2011 a "once in a lifetime event" but here we are, just over ten years later, living a rerun.
No, the news is not exaggerating things -- Main Streets of Ludlow and Proctorsville (as in other towns) became fast-flowing rivers for nearly 24 hours. The damages to homes and small businesses are immense. Tourism has all but stopped and all efforts are focused on cleaning and repairing.
We are moved (once again) by the resilient spirit of Vermont and the generous nature of its residents. To see a community jump into action and help one another in such a sophisticated and organized manner is truly something to behold.
While Singleton's General Store was still reeling from a basement FULL of water, they were making sure that residents and volunteers had hot sandwiches and cold milk (and beer!). Similarly, Goodman's American Pie (like many other local restaurants) offered free meals, hosted fundraisers, and even drove their pizza truck to a flood site, ensuring that the residents and volunteers all had lunch.
When all the news coverage has stopped and all the standing water has gone, it will be the bond of the community that stays. Vermont. Is. Beautiful."
This shouldn't happen to such beautiful places and nice people.

I live in Vermont and the flooding is really bad. My son lives in Johnson, VT, and that town was inundated. I live on an island in Lake Champlain, which has a large watershed. While we didn't get severe washouts here like the mountain valley towns, we get the slow flooding while the lake rises. The lake level has risen 2.5 feet already and is predicted to keep creeping up. We're not at official flood stage, but it is a record high for this time of year when the level usually decreases. The water is filthy and lots of debris is washing up on our shores. "Skeletal remains" were discovered washed into the Lake on Sunday and they have no idea where it came from. Ugh.

Sounds awful. Hopefully no major issues for you. My shore house has water within a football field on three sides so I understand the concern. Luckily we are elevated and built for some flooding (happens two/threw times a year) but still concerning
A lot of the really bad flooding happened along the rt. 100 corridor. The steep valleys and streams caused people to build along the water and it was quaint and beautiful but now it’s become a trap. On the east and west sides of the mountains we saw a lot of flooded fields but in general the water was able to flow into lake Champlain or the CT. river. Not so in the central part of the state.

Thanks, all! Been around….just doing stuff. I’m on my communities advisory council….so helping out here and there with them. They want me to run for City Council, which is probably a bad idea given I have zero patience and AMD not good at grips and grins while listening to a bunch of my fellow old farts whine and cry. Plus, I’m not the guy who is generally supportive of the (ahem) conspiracy folks who still have political signs in their yards from an election that happened 2+ years ago.
Been traveling. Plan to do more.
Really good to see all the familiar faces still out and about here. I’m good on my end.
Well, looks like I’m all caught up. Will drop by from time-to-time.
Oh…forgot…..got a call from a guy in KY who found my old business card under the seat of my previous TLX. I had forgotten that I had written my personal cell number on a few of my old business cards for “important” people to reach me after work hours.
Anyway, this guy asked me what happened to the TLX. I went through the whole period of flipping my cars that I did for a couple of years. He said he was looking at it in Paducah, KY. I don’t think I’ve ever been in Paducah….ever! Told him it was a good car, very well cared for. He said it had a salvage title. Huh? As I communicated, that didn’t come from me.
I guess whomever had it after me must have wrecked it pretty badly to get it a salvage title.

Paducah might as well be in another country, that's how far away it is..

I looked at a YouTube vid some travel vlogger made while in Paducah......looks like a decent enough place. But, not somewhere I'd probably travel to for grins. But, made me wonder...how the hell did the TLX get from Cincinnati to Paducah? I know the Honda dealer (Performance) had it for less than 72 hours before they resold it. Someone moved to Paducah? Someone was traveling through and wrecked it in Paducah? Someone wrecked it, got the insurance check and the insurance company sent it to auction? Curious, I looked up the Ser # and saw CoPart (salvage vehicle auction company) had it at one point. Make me sad that someone wrecked it so badly that it had to be salvaged.

Then there are people like my wife who have always accelerated slowly and drove slower than most traffic. A 4 series BMW is pretty much wasted on her.

I’m going to change the subject here briefly.

Just make sure you say “this butt’s for you” when you turn up on your side just before the colonoscopy 😂
This would force the cellphone driver to get out of their seat and remove the cone, or they might drive around with the cone on their hood.
I've seen people in reasonably capable vehicles drive 5, 10, and 15 under. No passing lanes.
There are other factors that determine a safe speed other than the road and the vehicles on it.
In my research one of those factors is most definitely revenue generation, and targeted extra heavy enforcement (likely to meet a monthly quota in a day or two). Of course, they are not determining a "safe speed" just a "lucrative speed."
I say when you’re an oblivious driver you’ll drive around with the cone and barely notice it.

Eventually they're going to tell me to take a hike and that I'm A) charging them too much, and
Let's see, flipped my 1 year old '22 Honda Accord Hybrid for the '23 version.
Good to see (read) about you guys again.

I should sue on Judge Judy.

Vermont. Is. Beautiful."
