We had a twenty year old mess with a belt on a running engine and lost a finger tip. He was lucky that was all he lost.

You’re safe. I’ve replaced fuses longer than you and I’m still standing upright. Serpentine belts worry me much more. Way too much HP spinning those things.

Oh I got you. Safety tip: shut off the engine before changing the belt. You are welcome.

Really? Where is the challenge in that?

I drove through Panda Express yesterday for lunch. The bill was $8.20. I gave the girl a twenty and she gave me $11 back. I looked at her and she said she didn't know how to count change.

This morning I went through McDonalds. My change was supposed to be 24 cents. She gave me 14 cents.

I wonder if this is becoming a thing.

Maybe you should stop eating so much fast food? B)

I’m used to cashiers that can’t figure out change in their head. But they usually can type the numbers into the machine and read the answer. Assuming they can Accurately count the change out

I don’t doubt that’s plausible but these days people, how can I say this, feel entitled and might be deliberately short changing you. The expectation of a tip is everywhere.

Recently I did a pick up at a chain restaurant and came inside rather than make them run it out to me. The kid asks me if I want to round the bill to the next nearest dollar, he keeping the change of course.

Just for the record, “when I was a boy” and worked at the sub shop the mechanical cash register didn’t calculate the change so we had to do that in our heads. Later, at the farmer’s market, I didn’t even have that so I had to add up all the items and figure the change myself.

I’m not the brightest bulb so even today’s workers should be able to figure change.

BTW, if you want to really puzzle them, pay with $2 bills.🤣

Kids at registers don't know how to count change (or so they say), politicians and their voters don't know how to count billions (or willfully refuse when the numbers don't add up) - it all makes sense now...

Old news. The first time I encountered it was either at a McDs or BK when I was in Boston 40 years ago. The kid at the cash could not figure out the amount of change I was due back. I guess the register didn't tell her and she had no idea what the math involved was. I had to help her. Sad commentary on the school system/math curriculum.

My son learned how to count change last year in third grade…. They are just lazy. Also what cash register doesn’t give change amount due back when entering the correct amount of cash given?

They did that as far back as I can remember

It's a process thing. If this week's high school kid shows up for her first shift at McD's and they tell her to just ring in the items purchased and hit the button to ring in the total sale and open the cash drawer, she may not even know that capability exists.

The way things are going in here, we might as well pivot to discussing under posted speed limits and left lane campers again. :persevere:" alt=":persevere:" height="20" />" alt="" height="20" />

Do you have to get over when someone is merging?

The right of way to that road belongs to you -- and to you only. Anyone wanting to merge into your lane would have to yield to you. You have no obligation to slow traffic down to allow other traffic to come in, unless it's an active emergency vehicle of course.Nov 19, 2020

There is a legal concept that states that if you can avoid an accident you must do so. Failure to do so could result in you being found partly at fault. I believe it's called the last clear chance Doctrine.

So if the other driver merges into you and you could have avoided the accident by slowing down or changing lanes then you could be found partly at fault for the accident.

Why doesn't the last clear chance doctrine apply to those rear-ended that could have easily sped up or changed lanes to avoid it?

In general I agree with the Doctrine, but it seems hard to prove and/or apply legally.

Certainly, the Canadian traffic law language is very low IQ as written. You can't have "shared" right of ways. There need to be clear predictable traffic rules and regulations for "right-of-way" so that people can drive correctly and predictably. Anything else is mayhem and chaos.

The key is proving that it was avoidable. Good luck! "Could" doesn't count for much.

Reminds me of an incident years ago where a teenage girl ran a stop sign and t-boned my friend's car. Her defense was effectively "he should have avoided me!". Thankfully, logic and accountability prevailed no matter what "could" have happened, and her excuse was denied. Try that crap with me and I'd be going legal medieval for a real settlement.
I had a coworker one time who got into an accident and a well meaning fool with a dashcam caught it all on the dash cam and sent it to her and she forwarded onto the insurance company. The other insurance company saw the footage and declared that she could have avoided the accident and guess what? she ended up getting hit with a partial blame. I think she was assigned 10% blame for the accident.

Insurance companies apply shared blame on as many claims as they can because it increases profits. 30 or 10% is assigned not due to liability reasoning, but due to profit reasoning.

    It sure is.

Just the other day on the CBS national evening news they reported that hundreds of kids in New York City schools (I think 8th grade) were given a proficiency test on a few subjects. NONE, absolutely NONE could pass the math part of the test. I don’t know how that’s possible. It’s pretty bad when school administrators can’t fudge results better than that. Maybe they weren’t good with numbers either. Sorta like the blind leading the blind.

I had a haircut yesterday. Been going to the same guy forever. He is a 1-man operation, cash only. For longtime customers he gives a deal below his posted prices. Sometimes he doesn’t use the cash register if I pay price + tip exactly and he doesn’t need to break a big bill. Fine by me.

It used to be when you saw a Cadillac you were on guard for how they were going to do the wrong thing. Today even the owners of rust buckets have to be watched closely. This isn’t politically correct but it used to be when you saw a pickup the driver was usually very good. Today, too many women who like to sit up high are driving those things.

I was at Home Depot a little while ago. When I was ready to check out both of the cashier checkouts that were open were backed up so I went to the self-checkouts.

Holy cow! There were only about 6 open and at least 4 employees trying to help. Madhouse!

I have noticed more employees around the self-checkouts lately. One lady said she would help me. I told her I didn't need any help.

Around here the media is saying that the self-checkouts have led to much more shoplifting/stealing than what the retailers anticipated when they were introduced. In most stores that had led to more staff monitoring them so the salary cost savings have been less than they were counting on, and in one chain here they have installed interior railings, theft alarms and automatically locking access gates in an attempt to reduce merchandise “shrinkage “.

I have not got a new insurance card for the Legacy. I called my agent and they still have the BMW listed. That's the first time the dealer didn't call my agent. I don't know if they are supposed to (I don't know why they would) but still, they always have in the past.

I didn't mention before about the almost $5,000 worth of additional things they wanted me to buy along with the car. Extended warranty, ceramic coating, tire & wheel insurance, and I forget what else. That was new. The F&I guy also asked why I didn't want it all. He acted surprised as though people actually buy that "stuff". :D

I’ve had a number of salespeople express shock and hurt when I didn’t buy their “stuff”. One women in the Mitsubishi dealer F&I insinuated that I had led her on about buying an extended warranty like she was a jilted girlfriend. At a Chevy dealer they were shocked that I didn’t want to buy $16k worth of warranties and mop&glo on an $8k used car.

When we got the 2012 Legacy Limited to replace the 2005 XG350 that blew up we went to Columbus Ohio for that and I told the salesman I didn’t want anything from the F&I office and he told me he’d tell the F&I guy but to expect him to offer things because it’s their policy to do that but if the guy got too pushy I should get up and come get him because he didn’t want to lose the sale. I had no trouble at that place.

Fast forward to when we got my 2015 Genny in Fairfax Virginia. Even though I told the salesman the same thing the woman in that office was relentless (at least 3 iterations) trying to sell me an extended warranty. Only when I said, “give me my keys back” did the game playing stop.

I realize that office is a money maker for both the F&I person and the dealership but I don’t feel it’s my job to keep the F&I person employed.

I printed my new card at home.

Me too. Sort of. My agent emailed me a temp. card to print. Then they will mail a regular card. Doesn't make much sense, but that's what they do.

So...the F&I guy didn't do the "I" part and he didn't have to any of the "F" part since I didn't finance it. I wonder what I should call that office?

I think my favorite is when they want you to sign the form saying you did not want to buy stuff they offered.
