I’ve had some mighty good home made chicken soup in my day (think of a grandmother that brought her recipe over in the boat with her) but even that wouldn’t tempt me to pay 60 bucks for a bowl of soup.

I can do you one better. One of the offerings we have at the cooking studio is a single class - 75 minutes long, for $60. 3 kids showed up yesterday morning, their parents having paid that much for them to make pancakes from scratch.

So, in this week’s saga of home ownership, I learned that an old shower faucet cartridge can break off in the fixture when you go to replace it. This message brought to you by Moen and my DeWalt drill.

Why did I find this out? Because our shower cartridge gave up the ghost and the shower wouldn’t turn off.

We have an awesome scratch buttermilk pancake recipe that is to die for, but we do use an electric skillet, so that each kid can make and flip their own pancakes during the class.

Sometimes we use blueberries, sometimes chocolate chips, sometimes bananas.

The kids learn how to measure their ingredients, mix them up in a bowl, measure and pour onto the skillet, then flip them over at just the right time.

They also made a second item, but I can't remember what it was yesterday.

This place we were at last weekend has reserved handicap parking.



They must have had people parking there who shouldn't have because they raised to fine, which used to be $150.

Learned my 2nd new sport in a week yesterday. Went to a local club for a learn to do curling session. Lots of fun but harder than it looks. Definitely harder than pickle ball! And colder.

I’m going to say Vermont but that’s a real ride to Denver. They must have maple trees in Denver because the guy across the street has 2 of them in his front yard. I never thought about taping those until just now.

Going from memory I think my cartridge model number is 1222 for both the shower and tub and Moen sent them free. All I had to do was wait a few days which I realize can’t always be done.

Going from memory I think my cartridge model number is 1222 for both the shower and tub and Moen sent them free. All I had to do was wait a few days which I realize can’t always be done.

Two reasons:
(1) I did not find out about the 1222 removal tool until after we were well underway (I had watched several youtube videos and reviewed the cartridge installation instructions and there was zero mention of a specialized tool.

(2) They did not have any in stock locally.

I have ordered one from Amazon though since we have two other 1222 faucets and I expect to need to do this exercise again.

Well the course is a 9 hole course that's owned by the village and the $16 is a weekday senior rate for residents. On weekends it would cost me $20 and non residents would be charged more. So if I wanted to play 18 holes it would be $32.

The $150 one is Dubsdread at Cog Hill and you would have to look long and hard to find a better course. Although there are other courses at Cog Hill that cost a whole lot less.

I had that happen to me 3 years ago. The Moen was only installed 2 or 3 years before that. I was unimpressed even though they did send the free replacement. I didn't have shutoff on the feed to the shower (I do now) so I could only get it to stop running by shutting off the supply at the meter, no fun. Oddly enough I was able to extract the failed cartridge just with strong pulls on the stem with channelocks. But if it fails again I'm buying the puller tool.

Not really, the question was asked how much does a round of golf cost. I gave the lowest price I personally know of and the highest one I personally know of. Basically a range of what a round costs.

There are several common models, these two and some others. General idea is you should not need a drill to just replace cartridge. If you want a different type of the faucet or bathroom spout, well that’s different story. Also, if you have a lot of lime scale, it may damage the cartridge and it can get stuck. It happened to me, but I was able to dodge the bullet and somehow pull it out with a tool without damaging the rest, with quite substantial effort, but without overdoing it. Since then I only get brass cartridge, not plastic and I lubricate it before inserting it in, I also listen for a change in the spout noise, for building constriction of water pressure (it starts singing) to change the cartridge early.

Yeah - I've learned a lot. We pulled for a while with standard channel locks and it wouldn't come out. Then the cartridge just gave out and snapped. The only way to get the remnants out was to drill it so it would collapse. Not my favorite activity.

I gather you got the cartridge out but I don’t know how a drill would do it without damaging the valve body which would require a total valve replacement. That could be a BIG job (depending on your skill level) especially if you don’t have access to the back of the valve body to unsweat the copper tubing (or at least disconnect the screw on adapter fittings) on the rear of the valve body if they are even used with your application which is pretty rare but I saw that once.

Are you sure you have the 1222 cartridge because Moen also uses a 1225 cartridge for some valves that is very similar but a little bigger in diameter and therefore the 1222 removal tool won’t get that one out. Same type of tool but a little bigger.

Just asking.

EDIT: just saw where @venture has the 1225 cartridge.

One thing that I probably should do with my Moen faucets is to get the free replacement cartridge in advance by reporting a failure before it actually fails.

100% the 1222 cartridge - and I did it very carefully with a very small drill bit - before installing I checked the valve body for just the reason you indicated. Got lucky.

Almost all single handle kitchen faucet manufacturers use a cartridge of some kind and a puller might be needed for all of them too. @ab348 lucked out by yanking on his to get his out. I’ve had that luck too but there are times when you need the puller to prevent damaging the valve body.

The tool is dirt cheap compared to replacing the whole valve to say nothing about the work involved doing that for a tub or shower. Replacing an entire kitchen faucet is a walk in the park compared to replacing the entire valve for tubs and showers.

FWIW, I don’t think Moen uses the same type of cartridges for their sink faucets like they use for their tubs and showers but I could be wrong.

Why did I find this out? Because our shower cartridge gave up the ghost and the shower wouldn’t turn off.

Why did you need a drill to remove a Moen cartridge? All I needed was the Moen cartridge removal tool and it come out easy peasy. Going from memory I think my cartridge model number is 1222 for both the shower and tub and Moen sent them free. All I had to do was wait a few days which I realize can’t always be done.

I have a few Moen faucets and that number didn't look right. I went and looked and, sure enough, mine are 1225. Weird.

There are several common models, these two and some others. General idea is you should not need a drill to just replace cartridge. If you want a different type of the faucet or bathroom spout, well that’s different story. Also, if you have a lot of lime scale, it may damage the cartridge and it can get stuck. It happened to me, but I was able to dodge the bullet and somehow pull it out with a tool without damaging the rest, with quite substantial effort, but without overdoing it. Since then I only get brass cartridge, not plastic and I lubricate it before inserting it in, I also listen for a change in the spout noise, for building constriction of water pressure (it starts singing) to change the cartridge early.

Believe it or not a plastic cartridge can be removed easier than a brass cartridge because brass against brass can really seize and be almost impossible to remove.

There are times when plastic is better than metal and in plumbing that’s the case a lot of times. I would NEVER use the old style chrome plated brass for kitchen and bath drain lines. Any time I’ve ever touched old chrome plated brass drain lines they crumble every time. That never happens with plastic.

FWIW, where I live if you have to replace an old cast iron drain line from the house to the street it MUST be schedule 40 or 80 PVC pipe and using tera cota is also prohibited.

I believe the City of Chicago still requires metal-clad wiring aka BX or Greenfield cable for electrical work too. Romex must be encased in metal conduit.

My oldest daughter has now completed two of her four scheduled PA program interviews. I figured that she would like the first one at a private school better than the state school (where I went to medical school). I was wrong. Her interviewer was the new program director who works in pediatrics and my daughter’s interest is pediatrics. They seemed to be two peas in a pod. Doesn’t hurt that the program is $68k at state school vs $98k for private school.

She has upcoming interviews at Midwestern in Downer’s Grove (Chicago suburb) and University of Dayton.

This will be an interesting few upcoming weeks…

Yes. Looks to be a bit over $97k. Midwestern is $130k. Ouch. I can’t retire if she picks that one😂

The interviews were odd. The private school asked how to explain any bad grades but she has a 4.0 so they hadn’t looked at her resume apparently.

Plumbing and electrical codes change all the time so you have to go by what’s in effect in your area when you START to build.

Like I said where I live you have to use PVC pipe for the main drain line from a house to the street. You can PVC for DWV lines too. If you want you can use copper inside a home for DWV but I don’t know anybody dopey enough to go through the expense and time to use copper. FWIW, my area no longer permits the use of ABS plastic pipe for any DWV applications, indoors or out.

Where I live you have to use BX electrical wire in all industrial and commercial buildings or use conduit. Some area within these buildings require rigid electrical conduit (threaded pipe like used in plumbing but it can’t be black pipe like what is used in plumbing for gas lines). The pipe used must be rated for electrical service meaning for the most part it has to be seamless galvanized threaded pipe. In other areas thin wall electrical conduit can be used but no wire commonly known as Romex is permitted.

Romex is a trade name of the company that invented it replacing the old knob and tube wiring. People today say Romex all the time (me too). It’s like saying Kleenex even though the wire is manufactured by many companies. Todays Romex is plastic covered not cloth covered with some binders similar to tar. And todays Romex is color coded so inspectors, and everyone else for that matter, knows what gauge wire is within the outer colored plastic sheath. Just thought you’d like to know more about Romex than you ever thought you wanted to know.

What does this have to do with tub/shower/kitchen cartridges or any other plumbing for that matter other than you might not be able to pay your water bill soon?

I cheated death once again. My wife told me that the power adjustments on the passenger seat of her X1 were not working. Time was short, so I didn't have time to put on my Nomex fire suit and gloves- or my safety glasses. However, I screwed up my courage, released the glove box latches, and found and replaced the bad fuse.
Now I need a stiff drink.

I have one Kohler faucet in a bathroom that has been installed for about 8 years. Never touched the cartridge. I'm not sure how to get it apart anyway. It's sort of an odd ball.

For anyone with brass housings and mineral scale buildup, use a 50% mixture of vinegar and water, keeping the area where the scale is builtup soaked. That's the formula for removing the brass ring that holds the Delta shower cartridge in place. It's worked wonders each time I've had to fight to get the ring off to replace the rubber cups for the hot/cold water inlets at the back.

I’ve used vinegar too and it’s fine when something is vertical and gravity helps but for something mounted horizontally and deep like a valve body where the cartridge slides in, vinegar won’t flow into the body. I guess you can try to squirt it in there but that would be difficult to get enough in there to dissolve the mineral buildup. The puller is still my preference for those applications.

Vinegar works great on shower heads. I’ve seen where you can partially fill a plastic bag and wire or tape the bag to the pipe to hold it in place but I just unscrew the shower head and let it soak in a bowl until the end of the day.

Too late now.

Although I hear water softeners greatly minimize the problem but I don’t have one of those. Just plain old water supplied by the city. Wells are even worse.

You’re safe. I’ve replaced fuses longer than you and I’m still standing upright. Serpentine belts worry me much more. Way too much HP spinning those things.

I’m going to say Vermont but that’s a real ride to Denver. They must have maple trees in Denver because the guy across the street has 2 of them in his front yard. I never thought about taping those until just now.

Make sure those are sugar maples because their sap has the highest sugar content. You can tap other maple varieties but you’ll need to boil a lot more sap for an equivalent amount of syrup.

Years ago I noticed some trees in the woods were tapped and had buckets hanging. Someone had tapped a bunch of Norway maples by mistake.

I think the trees are Red Maple because the leaves were red for a short time but now they’re purple and falling fast. I guess I shouldn’t waste my time.

Nobody has ever asked. I guess trial and error.

I saw it on the Kohler web site and thought I'd give it a try and replace it with something else if I didn't like it. It's still going. Maybe there isn't a cartridge??
