Some people take 'Dispose All' to literally.
I used to be able to figure out if the turntable was stuck or if it was some other problem.

Apparently, all kitchen drains are the same size....it has been standardized:
All kitchen sinks today have the same diameter drain, which is 3 1/2 inches and is larger than a bathroom drain which measures in at 1 1/4 inches. It is the same size as a typical standard shower drain, however. When installing a new drain into the sink, you have no need to shop for certain diameter drains. All drains manufactured will adhere to this standard size. The drain size is not random; it is sized to meet certain needs. The drain line is also sized for functional reasons.

Your welcome...if you need any DIY help just ask!

I am one of those folks. If it’s a food item it goes down the disposal. No clogs so far with a Kenmore 1HP unit. Less weight to take to the curb and no smell either.

I don’t know why you don’t “like it”because a disposal is designed to chop up a good amount of food before letting it go down the pipe.

The only time I asked Mrs. j to leave the dishes unrinsed before putting them in the dishwasher was to see if the salesman was on the up and up about the dishes not needing to be scraped. It worked as advertised but Mrs. j said that was the last time she was going to do that. I feel there is a big difference between food going into the dishwasher and food going down the disposal.

I’m with Stick on this one. I don’t put a ton of stuff down the disposal either. The trash can is footsteps away from the sink so the majority of food scraps go there. Small stuff is ok and once in awhile I’ll grind some citrus peels to avoid any odors.

My thoughts are why tempt fate. I have no idea if there is that one pipe hidden in the ceiling that doesn’t have quite enough pitch and will eventually lead to a clog.

Dishwasher? Well yeah most things go in without much left on the dishes… just streaks from sauce or tiny crumbs stuck to the dish.

This is what happens with A/C..no one leaves their windows open, any more.

Garbage disposals reduce fly and insect infestation. I think there was a big practical demonstration of this in Jasper, Indiana in the '50s or '60s.

Also, on a new appliance note:

New garbage disposal with the new kitchen. The plumber made a point of demonstrating it to me, because: "I don't want you to call tomorrow and tell me it's broken".

It is unbelievably quiet. Also, it grinds the reverse direction every time you turn it on. Which helps stop jams.

Sink disposers are banned here. Not sure if it is a city law, provincial, or national across Kanada. I don't think it is the latter but you can never be sure lately.

The reason for the city enacting its ban years ago was that they wanted to avoid having to filter out and dispose of the sludge created by them in their then-new sewage treatment plant.

I used to have a two-tub (divided tub) sink, switched to a large single tub a few years ago. It's better if you need to put in a large pot, bowl or bucket. It also allowed me to shrink (slightly) total sink area and recover a small bit of work area on the countertop (my kitchen is on a small side, to every square inch counts). I prefer it this way, would not switch back.

I’m such a fan of disposals I’d tempt fate before I’d not use it. Having a clogged drain isn’t the end of the world, they’re usually easily cleaned out. With a good sized disposal, 1/2 HP minimum, you should not have any problems with ground up food going down a drain pipe slope that isn’t quite up to code. But, there’s only one way to find out.

When we were in our first house a good friend of my youngest brother was in the plumbing biz and he gave my brother a very good price on a 1/3 HP disposal. One time when we were at his house my SIL raved about how much she liked it. So, of course Mrs. j thought we should get one. My brother called his friend and he gave us the same price. Everything was fine until Mrs. j put potato peels down it, then the pipe clogged. After clearing the clog, I told her not to put too many peels down the drain at one time and to make sure she ran a lot of water. That worked pretty well until it didn’t. So potato peels were no-no in our house. After a few months of complaining from her I broke down and got a 1/2 HP job from Sears. No more problems after that.

Fast forward to when we were about to buy our second house in 1989. I saw the house had a 1/3 HP reversal Kitchen Aid disposal that I knew had to be installed after the house was built because you had to open the sink front cabinet to turn on the switch under the sink. No big deal because I could mount a wall switch after we moved in but I asked the woman how she liked the disposal and she quickly and I mean almost instantaneously said, “fine, just don’t try to chop up potato peels”. :# The fix for that was, I took the 1/2 HP unit from my old house and installed it and we never had a problem in that house either. Mrs, j just kept shoving potato peels down that drain like she was used to doing.

This is a car site so you guys have to know the value of HP.

Yeah, nonsense. I’m sure the sewage treatment plant had more to do with cleaning things up.

And what about the long list of things you can’t put down the disposal? The small amount going down instead of in the trash would not make a noticeable change in the volume of trash out of our house!

Man, that is one scary post. I might have to go cower in a closet every time I’m about to turn on my disposal.

Now for the truth. Every DON’T in that article I do (2 exceptions, see below). In fact they tell you not to put banana peels in your disposal but I do that too. I guess if you have a pee wee powered disposal maybe it’s best not to use it and think of all the water you’ll save while doing that.

The 2 exceptions are fat and paint. If folks have to be told not to throw those items down a disposal they need more help than a plumber can give them. Those items shouldn’t be thrown down any drain, disposal or no disposal.

Once again the internet doesn’t get everything right.

I’ve always had septic tanks. And never have had a garbage disposal. We use the screen drain strainer things and just dump the crumbs into the compost. The strainers get thrown into the dishwasher when needed and seem to work fine.
Maybe if I was on public sewers I would consider a grinder.

    Who first said good riddance?
    Shakespeare
Shakespeare seems to have been the first to combine "good" with "riddance" in his 1606 play Troilus and Cressida in which Patroclus responds to some verbal abuse from Thersites with a pithy, "A good riddance."

My story of dislike of a store would be a tire store. When new tires were put on, they insist on "checking" the alignment. They came out with a printout from the alignment machine with green boxes and red boxes, green for okay settings and red for those that were not in optimal spec.
Looking at it quickly I realized it looked like both front wheels were turned slightly to the right causing them both to give out of spec readings for the 4-wheel tracking, but the toe-in/toe-out was right on spec between the two. It had only been about a year since the car was aligned by Chev dealer.

    I said, "No."

Then last visit they came out with my engine air filter. It looked dirty on the foam surface and had a few pieces of dry grass. I said, "No" to replacing the air filter. It was less than 2 years, and when I checked it myself there was no grass bits in the bottom of the air plenum. Hmmmm. wonder if the grass was added to make it look dirtier. The paper matrix under the foam prefilter looked my fine to my eye.

So I understand the Timex effect.

This reminds me of the time I took my car in for minor warranty work. Sure enough the SA said I needed an air filter (I had just changed it 2 weeks earlier) so I knew it was fine. Just to have some fun I said to the SA, “I’m positive I don’t need a filter but let’s do this. If it needs a filter I’ll eat it but if it’s clean, you eat it and install a new one, OK”? His response was, “maybe the mechanic confused your car with someone else’s”. They’re always quick on their feet but I wasn’t dropping it, not yet anyway. So I asked, “how many cars do your mechanics work on at one time. If more than one that explains why there are too many mistakes made here” (I had a run in once before with the previous SA about shoddy warranty work) and I wasn’t about to accept double talk. Finally, he said, “never mind, we’re not going to install a filter on your car”. Like he was doing me a favor.

I know a guy who was an excellent mechanic but the garage he worked for closed. He applied at a franchised garage in the Tampa area. They told him part of the job is to make sure you charge at least 15% more for repairs...than what the customer brought the car in for.

Side by sides make it easy to look into the fridge or freezer, and you can buy smaller pizzas or cut the box in half. Often they can be wedged in on an angle....or find other things to eat.

Can't you hire the "man" to do that for ya?
Sometimes our freezer gets so full......that I just open it and whatever falls out is what we will have for dinner. :)

A question for Mr. Flip-it JMonroe, and anyone else that wants to chime in.

we have to decide on how to do our shower room (yes, it is a room, not a shower, I think it is 6x5). It is fully tiled walls and ceiling, but standard is a white shower pan. We can pay extra ($850) to have the floor tiled also (plus I guess an overage on the tile allowance!).

question is, what would you do for effect and bang for the buck? I am considering not tiling the floor because I really hate grout and tile in the shower to start with. Especially on the floor since the water sits there. we did add the tiling into the initial contract but could always swap that out since they are far from that stage.

one thing I am not quite sure of though (question for the builder) is how he does a pan in a stick built room like that (I assume he must frame it to fit, unless they custom make pans for that application).
