Funny how people think all of Colorado is mountainous. Roughly half the state is high plains with a lot of agriculture - basically an extension of Kansas.

I saw an ad yesterday for a fridge that makes 2 different shapes of fancy ice and has 4 integrated cameras. I can’t fathom any of that being useful. The most you can do is be so incredibly lazy you need to look at the camera feed to see if there is something in there worth getting your big butt off the couch for. Seriously, people?

The big IT outage supposedly affected those techie refrigerators too. BTW, has that been fixed? My son is trying to have a meeting with his insurance caseworker and they canceled Friday because the company’s computers wouldn’t work.

They did. Proof positive no one needed it in the first place. I work in tech and my house is about as “dumb” as it gets short of having no wifi.

We have the Samsung Fridge with the giant screen and all that tech. We never use it. I loaded some pictures on it and the kids watch YouTube or doodle on it.

The ice thing… well I’d be all over that if ours had it. I make different types of cubes for various drinks.

    Large balls for whiskey
Large cubes for Sangria or chilled wine
Medium size rose shaped balls for my wife’s old fashioneds
Ice maker cubes for general cocktail shaking and on the rocks cocktails

You have a Samsung fridge? And it is still refrigerating? I didn’t think that was possible…

I gather there is a booming market for novelty ice cube trays. I saw some recently that made them in the shape of cats. For the cat fanatics out there.

The ice maker has been fixed and is dead again … I’ve replaced every plastic door shelf …. But (touch wood) it is cooling just fine and doesn’t have the water pooling issues under the deli tray.

If/when it stops cooling it’s gone. I didn’t buy it. The previous home owners left it. It was only 2 years old then and just about 6 now.

It’s a shame they look great and have a lot of nice features

How do I get aged bug splatters off the front of my car. I think some of them are there from last summer. Washing the car and letting it soak, then rubbing hard with a mitt just hasn't taken them off. I tried some Turtle Wax Bug and Tar remover, took some away, but doesn't seem to budge others. Advice? Other than trade in the car.

Ok I know I am late to this but what I do is cover the front of the car with wet paper towels or cloth towels and let it sit for a while. After 20 to 30 minutes the dried bugs get soaked and are a lot easier to get off.

My first trip to Colorado I was amazed just how quickly it went from mountains to flat. I had spent a lot of time in Tennessee and was accustomed to the mountains slowly getting gradually flatter over several hundred miles.

Thanks for reminding me that I’ll have to start looking for a new fridge. Ours is from January of 2010 when we redid the kitchen. It’s a large Samsung that has been slow making ice for a few years but now the defroster is acting up and there is snow in the freezer. This happened about 2 years ago but then it started working again so I forgot all about getting another one back then.

Now you’ve got me thinking, if it had cameras I’d know when it repairs itself again. But maybe I should just stick to a conventional French style like we have now. Any suggestions as to what brand I should get. I know if it was a dishwasher you guys would be very helpful.

If your Samsung fridge is 14 years old, and has already been acting up, it's time to buy a new one, before it's an emergency.

    I know.

When we moved back from SC in August of ‘97 we took our Amana 2 door fridge with us that we bought when we built the house in ‘92. Back then it was customary for folks to take their fridge (left all the other appliances but took their fridge).

It just so happened that when we redid the kitchen in 2010, Son #2’s basement fridge was acting up so we gave the Amanda fridge to him. That fridge stopped working about 3 years ago.

They don’t make them like they used to.

nope. when we got our first single family house (new build) in 1990, we had to get appliances and got a GE fridge. Traditional top freezer, not huge (18? 21?) in a snazzy tan color. Took it when we moved to our upgrade house in 1997 (I can't remember if it started out in the kitchen or not!) but when we moved in 2022, it was still cranking away in the garage. we left it for the people that bought the place, Was pretty grungy by then but worked like brand new. Outlived at least 2 that we bought for that place.

We have a Samsung counter depth French door fridge. We got it in 2016 and it’s been great (now I’ve probably jinxed it). I didn’t get a fancy one with outside the door water and ice dispensers because I read that those types need repairs more often than ones that don’t have them. We got it because we have a very small kitchen and Samsung was one of the few brands making counter depth fridges then.

From all descriptions I read and heard, in-door ice disposal is the single item that most prone to break on French door refrigerators independently from the brand. It's essentially a second freezer that's constantly exposed to thermal shock by opening doors, no wonder it is just not possible to make one that lasts long. I heard LG finally fixed design of their compressor thing (big issue in late 2010s), but it's unverified yet. Apart from compressors people were saying they were very good, so if this design flaw was really fixed, it goes to the top of the stack. I own a full-size French door Whirlpool (circa 2015) without in-door ice dispenser (for reasons stated above) with the ice maker is in the freezer) and it's performing generally well, but not faultless. It had some bad grommet design for water evacuation line from the freezer (part of frost control system) that got brittle clogged up resulting in freezer ice buildups, line freeze and icemaker line clogs, but after purchasing and installing the redesigned one, the issues went away. The only one thing the machine lacks is the open door buzzer, which is a must for French door in my opinion, as doors need to be slam-shut, otherwise that may hang and stay cracked open. That's the only real shortcoming that causes me discover cracked-open doors hours after I left them. Otherwise, It keeps the temperature and humidity very well.

Unpopular opinion…. French door refrigerators suck.

Also - 100% the ice maker in the fridge compartment is a fail.

At our old house we had a Kenmore side by side made by LG it was holding up great after 10 years when we moved out.

I have a GE fridge that’s about 8 years old now. The black piece at the end of the drip tube clogs up, water goes into the freezer and freezes on the bottom. Once there is no room for the water to go, it leaks out the front. The ice maker works when it wants.

That's exactly what I experienced on mine, Whirlpool redesigned the piece (grommet, which quickly got brittle, sticky and gross), and after installing it (it was around $20 for the piece, easy DIY), it stopped being a problem. Perhaps GE did the same?

To an extent … but personally I think the designers made the French door seem trendy and more modern at the expense of versatility. The fridge may have advantages but the freezer (especially on Samsungs) is terrible.

I wish we had a side by side so I don't have to reach into the bottom freezer to get my ice cream. :o

I’ve been mentally trying to decide what I want in a new refrigerator. My brother bought a bottom freezer last year and says he likes it, but I kinda like having the freezer at eye level so I see the items lurking in the back that have been there forever and need to go. I find the doors on most side by sides overly narrow so I’m cool on those. I think I’ll just get a bigger top-freezer job.

we did side by side once. Did not like the narrow compartments. Have a french door since then. first couple were 3 doors. The new one we just got is a 4 door. We actually like the 2nd "flex" pull out. You can have it as a freezer or fridge drawer. we have it for deli and cheeses, stuff like that. Nice to not have to open up the main doors all the time. Could also be useful for freezer items you use a lot to keep them handy.

In door ice and water is like a moonroof in a car. Some people fixate on a higher possibility of problems. But I don't care, I want the feature. Having to open the freezer all the time to fish out ice sucks.

We got a Whirlpool side-by-side 2 years ago and our only complaint is that once the ice bin fills up and the ice maker stops cycling, it doesn’t start again on its own when the level drops. And that isn’t one of the easier ones to recycle.

While I was in the hospital, one of my friends took my Genesis G90 into service for the recall on the left turbo oil feed and metal flash guard to prevent the chance of a fire on the left exhaust manifold. Took them 3-1/2 hours to complete the repair. This recall applied to all 3.3 L V6 engines with twin turbos in the G90 and G80 vehicles.

Nice to have great friends close at hand in emergency situations.
