Every time I see a TV commercial with Matthew McConaughey driving a Lincoln, I laugh to myself. Down here in South Florida all I see is old retired folks driving those MKZ Sedans and most of them can't see over the steering wheel. I don't think Lincoln's approach to advertising is working down here - unless the retirees are in their third mid-life crisis!
Went to my first cruise in of the season. It was scheduled to have a popular DJ who brings his own trailer with speakers and power. Sponsored by a nursing home with the fees to go to Alzheimer's research. Nice way to start the season. But cold as a snowstorm with winds up to 25 mph and 40 degrees warming slowly into the 50s.

I had one - the gecko - but he got run over by a golf cart on our 9th hole at the club - God rest his soul.
I actually asked a linguist to identify the Gecko's accent and he thought it was that of an Australian who lived in England...interesting.
I thought he was a Brit who migrated to Sidney, Australia. After getting out of prison, he joined an insurance company in their sales division and now resides in the Everglades - but spends his summers in the Big Apple.

28firefighter - are you a "12" like me? I am a crazy strong Seahawk fan. DirecTV Sunday Ticket will be ordered during the summer so not to be late on it. People are telling me the Mariners are going to be awesome this year but I say bring back the Sonic's.
driver100 - I don't drive like Dale, Jr. in my Soul but they are a ball ta drive and today I mentioned to my wife "wow, I'm talking at drivers in Dodge City? Memories of I-5 through Seattle and Edmonds and Lynnwood driving. But I don't know why I keep looking at other rigs 'cause the '11 Kia Soul 5-speed is a ball ta drive. I figured out on my test drive that I was going to like this car...a lot. I just have this weird poor man's Jay Leno thing going where I want ta try different cars.
Everyone I know that drives a Prius is the type that is "saving the world and being a good person" and they are very self righteous (as well as very annoying) about it.
That's why I think the Prius and other dedicated hybrids outsell hybrid versions of conventional models. The drivers want a car that shouts: "LOOK AT ME" I'M SAVING THE PLANET!!!"
Nothing wrong with saving the planet if you aren't smug about it.

Anoother type of car I mentioned before but my observations were confirmed on this trip, The Kia Soul and I know there are a few fans around here. Not a problem but for some reason the people who own them are one of the the fastest drivers on the road, and definitely the small car fast driving winner. Not sure why, something about that boxy shape and no wind resistance that makes owners take them to the limit. Maybe they are a blast to drive.
Funny you should mention this, on my way home this evening I got behind a Kia Soul as I turned into our sub division. Evidently Kia forgot to put a gas pedal in this particular car as I don't think this car went over idle speed, even came to an almost complete stop making turns. Would have gotten there faster walking.
I have a question....out of curiosity: When they are fixing roads like I-75 and they have 2 lanes instead of 3, and cement barriers on the left side, why do they ask trucks to stay in the left?
Slow cars stay in the right lane, and the trucks slow down the faster cars in the left lane and they have to change lanes to try to speed ahead.
They usually do that when they open the right shoulder as the right lane, it's not built to the same standards as the lanes and cannot withstand the constant weight of the trucks.

GG, would have loved to meet up with you but it would be tricky. We started pre-booking hotels a few weeks in advance - the good ones get booked, so we have to get through. Maybe one day we will try to take a more leisurely drive...maybe see everyone along I-75.
The E400 was a pleasure to drive. Much better than the 535 for long drives, seats are way more comfortable. There is some stiffness after driving 3 or 4 hours but a lot more in the BMW....seats in BMW are lower and more bucket like. Seats in E400 are more chair like....higher. Vision in all directions is great. Lots of power for when it is needed. Engine is smooth and quiet. All the controls are easy to use. One thing I think makes a car a great driving car is when the steering wheel feels very smooth...the bumps in the road aren't transferred to the drivers hands. I think that is a big part of what you pay for in expensive cars. If I was driving the Passat it would transfer all the bumps to the steering wheel.
Does anyone find voice command is a pain....it never works. I wanted Sirius channel 116 and she finally gave me 160!

Driver, did you ever do the "voice training program"? It takes 3-4 minutes for commands and 3 minutes for number sequences. It trains your Voice Command to be more sensitive and discerning to your pronunciation of commands and numbers.
I think you go into the NAV system to access the voice training segments. If not, just check your manual under Voice Command for the proper access. I mentioned this to you several times when you complained about it. Let me know how it worked for you
.
Mike, you taught me how to do it and it did improve after the training session. It still takes a few tries for it to work. The only reason i would use it is if i am driving and it won't let me punch in the address. I can do it much easier if I do it manually before putting the car in drive.

Slow cars stay in the right lane, and the trucks slow down the faster cars in the left lane and they have to change lanes to try to speed ahead.
Typically two lanes are shifted right or left so traffic is using what used to be one traffic lane and what used to be a berm or 'breakdown' lane. Usually the truck lane retrictions are to keep the trucks in the lane that was originally built on a deep roadbed when the highway was built. The auto traffic can use the other lane which used to be, at least partly, a berm lane where the roadbed isn't as durable or as deep because it wasn't meant to handle 80K Ton truck wheels pounding it.
Aba - you like to follow the weather. Looks like it was raining jellyfish at Hillendale Beach
Yes - Hallandale Beach - south of Ft. Lauderdale not far from FLL. I saw the news reports. They are not harmful, however I have been stung by a Portuguese Man of War jellyfish - had to go to the hospital. They have long tails that dig into human skin - it was pretty serious.

Remember, you are a foreigner and the car is German. My suggestion is that you preface every voice command to the computer with a more "harsh" or "insistent" command like ".,,you vill take me to my destination, schvinehunt!" Once you get the hang of it like I did, the response will be perfect!
One/won plus T = want. So it's Want My MPG? And if you get stuck behind one hypermiling, you should approach Prius mpg, lol.
There's a blue 2016 Prius V I want (1T) to look at - doesn't have the pano roof but the V's are still last year's style so it doesn't have the porcelain sink console.

Crummy weather in much of eastern North America the last few days. Up here in Atlantic Canada it was hurricane-like Friday, just rainy yesterday, cleared this AM for a bit but then rained again before it got real cold late in the day and turned to snow. Spring needs to get here fast.

I've had voice command in three cars now. The first was my '09 Genny, the second is Mrs. j's '12 Legacy Limited and the third is my '15 Genny. I tried them all just to see how they work, which in my opinion is not very well.
I don't mind washing and waxing our cars, but like I said way back when we talked about this on SFTSFL, I'll be damned if I'm going to talk to my cars.

I don't mind talking to my car. I don't mind when my car talks to me. It's when my car begins to curse at me that I get a bit conerned!
I drove a Prius from California to Colorado for a friend a couple years back. It was actually quite comfortable, in the same way that driving Mom's sofa might be. I thought it might fall flat on its face up at altitude, but it did "ok". I'd choose it over a MINI for a 1500-miler.

I dunno, I keep thinking about HAL from "A Space Odyssey" - "I'm sorry Dave, I cannot permit that".
driver, my Hyundai has voice commands. Seems to work OK, but I rarely use it. and usually just for calling someone. I think I had it tune the radio once to try it out, but more hassle than it was worth. I have 20 presets I think (maybe 18), so at this point, easier to just flip through the presets.
If I want to, I can get navi programmed, but need to read the prompts (how to give commands) to get it right, which defeats the safety aspect. So easier to do by typing it in.
actually, best is my daughters VW. That has the VW connect product (or whatever they call it) so I can go on the smartphone or tablet, map out a route (including any changes I make to the recommended one) and send it to the car. I like that. Saves time when you can plan ahead.
My 2er has voice recognition and it works extremely well, more often as not I use it to select the audio source and/or channel. BMW just rolled out the BMW Connected North America app that supposedly offers some new features so I'll probably try it out sooner than later- even if I find the BMW M Laptimer app to be more useful.

28firefighter - ahh, Philadelphia. There was an Eagles fan sitting right by me watching NFL football one Sunday at the 'I Don't Care Restaurant' in Dodge City. "Where do ya wanna go for dinner? I don't care!" Yeah. The Mrs. and I were still staving off DirecTV - we were on DirecTV Vacation, so, Seahawk games had ta be poached from area restaurants and lounges.
The worst fans sitting near the Mrs. and I were DEN Bronco fans. Yuk. For some reason they just hate the Seattle Seahawks. Humm...wonder why? It will be a priority ta get Sunday Ticket for September of 2016.

Want My MPG? -it is funny so many people have made this observation about Prius owners. Thanks for finding that out....license plates with messages on them drive me crazy if I can't figure them out.....some, I really wonder why people pay money for them. I like that blue color and the pano roof adds to any car.
@driver100...I've had quite a few cars with voice recognition. None of them ever approached the accuracy nor speed of execution as my Apple Car Play I use in the CTS. I'm thinking in pretty short order, you'll be paying for the interface to your Android or iPhone in your car, not an actual NAV or voice recognition system. Even Google voice is light years better.
Displaying the route map, or the music, or the podcast, or the internet radio station, etc will be included in the onscreen interface. But, all that will still come from your phone.
For example, a simple "Get directions to see the Cincinnati Reds on Opening Day" will yield the street-by-street directions to Great American Ballpark.

Opening Day is always in Cincinnati. It's a big thing. Tickets are highly prized. Our band boosters worked concessions at Reds Games and we worked opening day when President Bush threw out the first ball. The weather was 35 deg F and gusty winds. Still full after the downtown parade, etc.. One lady who was up in years brought her mother in her wheelchair. Mother hadn't missed an Opening Day since the depression or something like that. She was so frail I thought she'd likely have pneumonia after the cold and wind for 5 hours.
Years earlier I had won season tickets to the Reds. The lady at a downtown bank area tactfully tried to see if I would sell them to her when she was doing the paperwork for the condo I was buying. Unprofessional of her, but I understood how eager folks are to get opening day tickets.

GG, The built in voice recognition feature is basically unusable as far as I am concerned. Sometimes it works on the 4th or 5th try. One big problem is if I want a certain station, I will say Sirius Channel 17, and she will say I don't recognize that command, and then she goes through a list of 10 items I am to ask for.....mainly "STATION SELECTION". Then I say that and she doesn't understand the number, do I say one seven or seventeen? If I don't get it by the 2nd try might as well give up. I think it is one of those ideas that sounds good in theory, and one day it will work, but for now it is just too frustrating.
Sounds like the Apple Play system is good. btw GG, how are you liking the CTS these days? What is the plan for the short term and long term future? All the new Cadillac models look nice on the highway, the style is very unique and attractive.

Totally agreed about the interfaces. Tech is moving much faster than auto makers can keep up with, and it quickly ages a vehicle. It's time to use phones and tablets for the processing and simply provide a configurable and interactive display. Something that can be fully customized on what is displayed along with location, size, and graphics. Don't want the tach taking up so much room? Remove it. Something along those lines.
I want my next car to have apple CarPlay. Only downside is data usage and depending on cell coverage instead of satellite. So when you are lost in the boonies with no cell coverage, you are out of luck.

You're right, GG, the above is the future. Cheap new cars like the Chevy Spark have Android Auto and Apple Car Play as standard equipment, so does the tiny Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback and G4 sedan. Those two new Mitsu's are hitting dealer lots as I speak. My fave 2016 Scion iA does not have ACP or AA, but it does have a standard equipment 7" screen with all the Bluetooth connectivity and USB. Programs could or should be coming along to upload ACP and AA to systems like the iA's. Scion is selling a SD card for navigation for $225? Whoa - with AA or ACP you can just connect your smartphone up and use your app.'s from your phone in your car. Sometimes you will need to download an additional app. to make YouTube videos play on your screen and things like that.
The future is continuing to come alive electronically for us car nuts. That self-driving bike is incredible ta me!

My local jag dealer a few weeks ago was raking $500 to get on the XE wait list. And I don't think that was tied to a specific car either. But also not 2 year lead time!

There will be some suprises. Actually MSRP is rumored to be closer to $42K, and of course once Tesla hits the 200,000 mark (maybe next year), there will be no more tax credits for anybody. I wonder if those "listers" know this?
"For decades, the first pitch of every major league season officially took place in Cincinnati, and the Reds remain the only major league team to always open the season with a home game (save for 1966, when they started the season at Chicago after rain washed out the opening series in Cincinnati; and 1990, when due to a lockout affecting the schedule they opened the season at Houston)."
"Since 1994 ESPN has televised a regular-season game the night before "Opening Day" and recent years have seen the staging of season-opening series in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Japan, and Australia. While these are technically "opening games", Major League Baseball still reserves the title "Opening Day" for the first day in which multiple games are played. (For the first time ever, three televised games will be played on Sunday, April 3, 2016, before the traditional "Opening Day" slate of games on Monday, April 4.)[5][6][7]"
I'm not a baseball expert. I do know the morning talk radio host mentioned the earlier games "don't count." I note the explanation that opening day is the first day on which multiple games are played.?
First pitch used to be in Cincy. But it's still a big day in the City.

I actually asked a linguist to identify the Gecko's accent and he thought it was that of an Australian who lived in England...interesting.

It's not 'cause the Soul's a dud, though.

Mike, you taught me how to do it and it did improve after the training session. It still takes a few tries for it to work. The only reason i would use it is if i am driving and it won't let me punch in the address. I can do it much easier if I do it manually before putting the car in drive.

Nothing wrong with saving the planet if you aren't smug about it.
Those were cute and make the point...I'm not the only one that thought this. Seems lots of others here have noticed it to. Any idea if this license means anything?

One/won plus T = want. So it's Want My MPG? And if you get stuck behind one hypermiling, you should approach Prius mpg, lol.
There's a blue 2016 Prius V I want (1T) to look at - doesn't have the pano roof but the V's are still last year's style so it doesn't have the porcelain sink console.

Does anyone find voice command is a pain....it never works. I wanted Sirius channel 116 and she finally gave me 160!
________________________________________________________________________________

I dunno, I keep thinking about HAL from "A Space Odyssey" - "I'm sorry Dave, I cannot permit that".
I don't think we are too far away from that day.

Thanks for finding that out....license plates with messages on them drive me crazy if I can't figure them out.....some, I really wonder why people pay money for them.
I like that blue color and the pano roof adds to any car.

Years earlier I had won season tickets to the Reds. The lady at a downtown bank area tactfully tried to see if I would sell them to her when she was doing the paperwork for the condo I was buying. Unprofessional of her, but I understood how eager folks are to get opening day tickets.

I do know the morning talk radio host mentioned the earlier games "don't count."
I note the explanation that opening day is the first day on which multiple games are played.?
First pitch used to be in Cincy. But it's still a big day in the City.
