I'm still a lifelong Dodgers fan. So I could never root for the Reds in Ohio. I follow the Indians, but I really enjoy the minor league Columbus Clippers. Fantastic little ballpark with Buck a Bone City Barbecue every Tuesday home game.
Spending in the $80K range on other than a top lux brand seems to me like asking for a disappointing depreciation hit (and considering that most any $80K vehicle is going to spin off a ton of value in a few years, that Volvo should really empty your wallet over time). As for Volvo in general, I think they have some of the same image issues as Lincoln - more Buick than Lux.

Well, it wouldn't have been in 1968. Sandy Koufax retired after the 1966 season.
I was a Montreal Expos fan from the day they arrived in 1968 until they moved them to Washington after the 2004 season. The last few years when they were dismantling the team it was tough to root for them since you knew the end was near, and I couldn't root for the Nats once they moved. At that point I switched my allegiances to the Mets, whom I always sort of liked since they were generally an underdog and played second fiddle to the Yankees in NYC. It was a tough last few years but last season was miraculous and I hope they carry on this year.
Michaell - I've got a few years on you. My Dodger memories are more Drysdale and Koufax
I knew Don Drysdale and his wife, Annie, and their 4 kids very well - their kids attended my school in Rancho Mirage. Met Sandy Koufax at Don Drysdale's Memorial Service at Forest Lawn near Dodger Stadium. They were a great couple (the Drysdale's).
I got Mrs. j's 2012 Legacy back from the dealer body shop today. It should have been yesterday but they had to order another part. The right rocker panel. They said it had damage due to the fender being pushed into the mud guard which in turn pushed against the rocker panel and split it in the hidden area covered by the mud guard. I also got a new mud guard. This added expense to the insurance company was over $500 more than the $1100 estimated for the original work.
When I said if the crack was small enough to be hidden by the mud guard it couldn't have been too bad. The response to this was, "the crack COULD have continued to travel so we wanted to do it right. Don't worry your insurance company approved it before we replaced it. So, you don't have to pay more than your $500 deductable which is what you had to pay to begin with".
In my opinion this was an overkill. The rocker panel could have been strengthened by some fiberglass tape and body putty on the rear of the rocker panel to keep the crack from traveling.
This has to be why our insurance rates are as high as they are.
jmonroe
Our insurance rates are as high as they are because too many people drive too poorly. If I found out a quick and dirty repair had been done to my Audi, I'd start a World War 3 over it. Frankly, I'm of the opinion any amount of damage is a total loss to a car built and assembled in Germany. However, if it must be repaired in the US, then you have to replace all damaged parts with new OEM parts.
I have to admit I felt a little bit guilty though making Geico pay $600 extra to remove the aluminum side mirror shell and replace it with new over a very small "scratch/chip" Were talking about 1/16 x 1/16". However, it was there decision to NOT TOTAL it.

@jmonroe - it's funny you mention about insurance rates. A teacher who parks her 110K mike Jetta TDI wagon in the garage where I park at work rear ended another vehicle one day on the way home. Nobody was injured, no damage was sustained to the car she hit, & her car was 100% drive able. From what I could see, the hood, grill, & front bumper needed to be replaced. She had the work done where her insurance company recommended. $7,600 in damages. She said she thinks they have it down to a science how much they can replace/repair without the insurance company totaling the car.

I can't tell you how many games I saw at Forbes Field, both when my Father took me and later when I paid for the tickets myself. I even caught a few foul balls there when the balls would curve around the screen and go into reserved Section 14. Lots of memories from that place.

Looks like a big player in the legalized pot industry in CO is going to bid on naming rights for the stadium in Denver--to be called Native Roots Stadium. This could give new meaning to the Mile High City?

I have a good friend who had the misfortune of having a neighbors tree fall on the roof of his 3 year old Fusion a few years ago. I always thought that kind of damage to the roof pretty much assured that the car was going to the junk yard. Nope, they fixed it and IIRC, it cost over 9K to do it. I will admit, however, that the work was pretty darn good too.

I'd heard that rumor, too. Sports Authority recently filed BK. Next payment on the naming rights is due later this summer; nobody is sure if they'll make it or not.
Sales of marijuana (medical and recreational) totaled $83M in February 2016. It is a booming industry. My DIL works as a "bud-tender" at a shop in Colorado Springs.
Been a Reds fan all my life, even when I didn't live in the area. My Dad took me to see those "Big Red Machine" teams. I've heard it said (arguably) they were possibly the best MLB teams that ever stepped onto a field.....up and down the line up.
I know there was a lot of talk stating the '75 World Series between the Reds and the Red Sox was considered the best World Series of all time. Can't argue.
At one point, I remember Sparky Anderson had the luxury of having every one of his everyday 8 hitting .300 or above.
Loved that L.A. Dodgers vs Cincinnati Reds rivalry, too. We don't see that anymore as divisions change....maybe Yankees vs Red Sox.
They are rebuilding now, which it seems every team needs to do, at one point or another (even the Yankees, for a little while).
I still go to 5-6 games/year. Love our ballpark. In a couple of years, we'll be right back in the thick of it.
So yeah....big Reds fan!
I'll take the '89 A's over any team in the history of Baseball as the best team ever in a single year. They walked over the Giants in 4 straight games as if they were a Single A minor league team. Also, a scientific survey found that over 97.8% of A's fans predicted the Series would be over in 4 straight before it even started.
Even better for you, the following year they lost to your Reds on purpose in 4 straight games to become the very first team in back-to-back seasons to be a sweeper and sweepee in the all-time history of baseball World Series!

I'm not sure what you mean by saying they lost the 1990 series to the Reds "on purpose".
To win the unique distinction and accolade of being the first to be sweeper and sweepee in back to back seasons of course. But of course I'm yanking chains. They didn't lose on purpose, but some key injuries hurt them, and they were too self satisfied just winning in '89 after losing in '88 to the Dodger's due to Gibson's "faked" injury

Me I bleed Cubbie blue. Spent many a school day in my youth in the bleachers of Wrigley Field. IIRC bleacher seats back then were about a buck fifty (about $6.50 in todays money). Now they can go for over $50 at times.
Would take the bus to the train and then the train to the ball park and I could do the trip and the tickets for under $5.00.
But you're right about the minor league games being enjoyable, they tend to have a lot more things going on between innings and it's a lot cheaper than the major league parks. Here in the Chicago area we have 7 professional baseball teams, two major league teams, one class "A" minor league team and 4 independent league teams. The minor league and independent league games are a fraction of the cost of the major league games and can be a lot more fun.

Ahh, yes, minor league baseball. I have some fond memories of the minor league baseball park in Omaha, summer of 1969. I graduated high school in May of ’69, and spent the summer in Omaha far from home. A friend helped me get a job doing construction work, which paid a lot better there than in Texas (right to work state, construction work paid federal minimum wage).
One of the guys I worked with on the construction job, a local, had an uncle who had the beer concession in the minor league park. He got us both a part time job selling beer. We lugged around a case (24) bottles and sold them in the stands. The way it worked, you popped the cap on the beer bottle and poured the beer into a cup. Customers were not allowed to have the bottle, possibly to protect the referees. Although this was a very mellow crowd, I never saw the slightest bit of violence.
The weather was warm, the girls were scantily clad, the beer flowed like water. We didn’t make a lot of money, but we did meet girls, and we did get to drink quite a bit of beer. All in all, it was a very good summer.
Bonds, McGuire, Winfield, Joyner and a bunch of other "names" came through the Alaska Baseball League. Not that I got to see any of those guys but we did get to see a Piper Cub make an emergency landing in the grass beyond the outfield fence one evening. No night games (even if extra innings ran to midnight ).
Haven't made it down to see the Chihuahuas, a AAA team for the Padres, just some college ball here.
We have a short season class A team here in State College (Spikes, affiliate of STL) and about a half hour away a AA affiliate of the Pirates (Altoona Curve)
You know what makes me still respect a lot of those older days ball players - they were mostly class acts. Didn't display the outsized ego's like today in sports (obviously not all, but more than a few).
Minor league ball, you'll save a bundle going to a game.
The minor league team in Boise was the Hawks and they had a nice field near the Boise River, complete with nesting ospreys on one of the outfield light poles. They were a farm team for the Cubs when we lived there, but recently became affiliated with the Rockies.
Bill Bucker wound up living in the area when he retired and lent his name to and actually ran a car dealership for a while. It folded in '09 after his partner stole all the money.
he never should have been out there anyway. Manager only left him in (normal was to pull for a defensive replacement) so he could celebrate on the field.
But, I'm a Mets fan. So not going to complain.
actually, Boston was losing that game anyway. The Mets would have won eventually, since the game was already tied before that play.

A's lost to the Reds on purpose? IZZATSO? LOL! We had a lot of fun with Canseco during that series.
I went to every home game of that World Series. A good friend of mine sold the paper to the printing company that printed the Reds game programs. He said his company bought a series of tickets for the season, and was offered playoff and WS tickets as a "preferred vendor".
All the tix were supposed to go to customers of the paper company. He did give some of them away (I think he had a total of 10), but kept 4 of them for his friends to go.
It was LOUD. We had a great time!
Lou Piniella, Barry Larkin, Chris Sabo, Jose Rijo, Rob Dibble, Eric Davis, Paul O'Neil, could go on and on. Oakland came in pretty smug. That didn't last very long!
The A's lost on purpose to the Reds in 1990, Andres? I think not. On purpose means the A's planned and executed 4 consecutive losses that year - a conspiracy like the 1919 "Black Sox Scandel" when the White Sox "threw the World Series" to the Reds?
I think your love of the A's has affected your imagination, Andres. I admire the A's and what they have accomplished over the last 25 years with a limited budget - but my admiration for them has not yet affected my imagination - soon maybe - but not yet!

The weather was warm, the girls were scantily clad, the beer flowed like water. We didn’t make a lot of money, but we did meet girls, and we did get to drink quite a bit of beer. All in all, it was a very good summer.
Haven't made it down to see the Chihuahuas, a AAA team for the Padres, just some college ball here.

Minor league ball, you'll save a bundle going to a game.
Bill Bucker wound up living in the area when he retired and lent his name to and actually ran a car dealership for a while. It folded in '09 after his partner stole all the money.
But, I'm a Mets fan. So not going to complain.
actually, Boston was losing that game anyway. The Mets would have won eventually, since the game was already tied before that play.

I think your love of the A's has affected your imagination, Andres. I admire the A's and what they have accomplished over the last 25 years with a limited budget - but my admiration for them has not yet affected my imagination - soon maybe - but not yet!
