CBS News....Traffic deaths increasing - up 18% over the last 2 years:

The report states that traffic death have increased 18 percent over the last two years. More than 19,000 people were estimated killed in the first half of 2016 alone.

“Our complacency when it comes to highway fatalities is killing us,” said Deborah Hersman, the National Safety Council’s CEO.

Hersman, who is also the former chair of the NTSB, said that there are three major causes of traffic fatalities.

“One third of all our deaths on our roads are due to alcohol impaired drivers,” she said. “We’ve seen speed limits going up across the nation -- we know that’s adding to the death toll. And then finally distraction. All you have to do is walk out near a roadway, you can see distracted pedestrians, distracted drivers.”

The surge in traffic deaths comes as more Americans are driving due to lower gas prices and an improving economy.

Federal regulators are still trying to understand what’s behind the sudden change in fatalities. A U.S. Department of Transportation report found a 13 percent increase in deaths among cyclists and a 10 percent increase for both pedestrians and young drivers in 2015.

“We are absolutely going in the wrong direction when it comes to highway fatalities. We’ve got to figure out what’s going on and put a stop to it,” Hersman said.

Well, we know from the report that it isn't the rising speed limits that is contributing to this, even though the former CEO of the National Safety Council spews off the myth, Just look at the report being reported on. They list the top 5 States causing most of this statistical skewing upward (which isn't as bad as they make it out to be because vehicle miles traveled is up too).

Yes, like clockwork, the States with the highest speed limits are not on the map for "increasing" deaths and accidents. You won't see Texas' 85 on the list, nor Utah's 80, nor Arizona's 75. Why on earth don't these States with ridiculously dangerously high speed limits have red stained concrete and asphalt by now! What gives!

CA is a big contributor to the statistical increase, maybe we should try something different than 65/70 everywhere!

I just saw another exemplar of that model with some patina but what I'd call perfect at a shopping center cruise in this week. Perfect color. Note the color-matched background on the dashboard...

First time I've used photobucket. It's a mess now with ads. Even got one of those jiggling popup danger alerts telling me to download the video upgrade because my computer couldn't properly display things. Probably installs a rootkit when they pretend to upgrade flash or something. LOL.

Love the color, always liked truly light blues.

1/3 of deaths are due to drunk drivers? Sounds fishy to me. Sounds like the prelude for some draconian infringements on our rights in the name of "safety".

    http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/news/crime-law/fatality-reported-in-crash-on-i-70-e-huber-heights/nsLTt/

You can add speeding to the causes of deaths. Here's most recent one in our area. Two guys racing on I70. one street racer stopped by second OSP at about location where car video starts in pursuit apparently and second thought he'd escape from the Ohio State Patrol in pursuit. I couldn't be sure the car of the runner was a Malibu but the article says it is was.

Video now has ODOT videos of criminal driving at beginning before the trooper cam. Luckily no one else was hurt by one of the criminals as he went across a 6-lane highway in Huber Heights.

The ODOT emergency response truck was just putting out a hot pink caution sign saying emergency scene ahead as I passed the last escape ramp. I almost backed up to that ramp but the truck was on the berm lane, knowing how often accidents block the interstate in that stretch. Took 20 minutes to get to next exit. I'd like to have stop strips to put out for the people who go around the backed up traffic waiting using the berm to get ahead of everyone to the next exit.

So I got caught in traffic backup going to tire store south of the crash and fire. I discovered all the traffic lights around the major exit were out because the perp hit a pole and knocked out about 7 traffic lights at exit. Wires hung low over interstate so traffic was stopped because wires were too low overhead. 6 hours of backup.

So many trucks having to get off at the last two exits mixed with late afternoon traffic. Gridlock.

Just because of a need for speed so two guys could expend a little testosterone in competition.

Racing and/or exhibition of speed should not get lumped into "speeding." Same reason as a drunk driver should not be able to blame "speeding" when they crash at 80 MPH in to a concrete column.

I have the complete Cannon series on DVD. He drove a Mark III first, then a Mark IV. All were silver (which often looks bluish) with a black vinyl roof and a red interior.

He liked his Buick's and started with a 55. Also had a 56 and I believe a 57 in succeeding years. The show went on for several years and later you'd see him in Olds, Mercury and Dodge as well. I think Mopar went big in sponsorship money when it released its 57's. I always liked those black and whites. They used a 57 Ford sedan undercover car for some scenes as well IIRC.

I remember seeing that car at that angle a lot on the show but at the reverse angle. I'm kind of surprised that the right side of that car doesn't have a few dents and scrapes because I don't think Broderick Crawford ever pulled a car over without squeezing it to the curb.

48 volt battery standard is coming?

Increased pressure from all sides are converging toward a move to the 48 volt battery. In an attempt to make cars lighter manufacturers are using more electric motors. Smart move except it puts demands on the 12 volt battery which is reaching capacity.

Modern gadgets, such as stop-start, hybrids, and telematics all stretch the 12 volt battery to capacity. Thus the need to upgrade to the 48 volt battery. Auto makers are under extreme pressure to meet CAFE standards but even with turbo charging and CVT transmissions, the internal combustion engine seems to be at a point of diminishing returns.

Ergo, the 48 volt lithium ion battery, which is the same size as a conventional 12 volt acid battery but with the capacity to add 25+ miles of pure electric power. How will that play in Detroit? A car so equipped might cost $800 more. But compared to the alternative, smaller and lighter cars, I think the 48 volt battery is the way forward.

I never got a speeding ticket driving my Parent's Camry when I was younger, and I drove it quite a bit as I borrowed it for almost my last 2 years of college since the lemon Dodge Neon couldn't get me to graduation.

About 3.5 months after getting a job after graduating I bought the '03 Accord LX V6 Coupe and gave the Camry back to the parents in tip top shape.

    Why is buying tires so...tiring?

Expected a call this morning from the warehouse this morning for my two tires I ordered. Nothing. So I just called them. "Yes they came in this morning" said the man with a thick foreign accent.

"How come you didn't call me"? I asked. No answer.

"Well, can I come in this afternoon as was discussed"?

"No, we're all booked Today and tomorrow"

Very interesting concept. If the 48 volt battery system (mild hybrid) only cost $1,000 extra and can save $4,000 in gasoline costs, then I would be interested....assuming it wouldn't burn up or blow up.

I actually did a little research on this about a month ago. It looks and sounds so good that I bought some Delphi stock, in my continuing quest to unseat Warren Buffet. ;)

I was in charge of tennis this morning.....12 people depend on me arriving on time with 3 cans of balls, for 3 courts.

After about 4 miles the Fusion Rental Car with about 10000 miles on it stalls going uphill on a 2 lane road. Cars are speeding around me and can't see cars coming the other way, from over the hill. That doesn't stop them from speeding by me.

The engine is sputtering, and there is no power. I put the car in neutral and glide backwards as far to the right as possible, with 4 way flashers going.

There is a wrench symbol showing. My cell phone doesn't work either, though fully charged. I am wondering how I can ditch the car and get to the tennis game.

I turn the car off....when in doubt try rebooting and it did get a bit better when I restarted. Tried it again and this time it was running better. Now the light with an engine and a fan was showing. Got to tennis. After tennis a friend followed me to Discount. They tried the car and said no warning lights were on now. They said this has happened before with Fusions and I heard them call the Ford dealer to take the car in. They gave me a Chevy Cruise :'(

I read somewhere what it is that's going wrong in the Fusion but can't recall right now. Friends bought a Fusion a few months ago, but I'm reluctant to tell them that this stalling is likely to happen to them.

Oh, I think Ford has many black eyes. Huge black eye. There are those groups that Hate Ford because they are a GM man, and vice versa, (and same with MOPAR), and then there are those that lump all of the Big 3 into 1 category.

Ford does get some brownie points for not requiring a massive bailout at tax payer expense and loss. They've also shown sparks of effort (at least for a few years) of at least trying to make reliable durable vehicles.

Of course, there is the customer service story my older cousin told me about his Ford Truck. Still, I like the looks of the new Mustang.

I think Toyota got bruised by the falsified runaway acceleration fictional stories. I've yet to see of one proven case where it wasn't driver error. Honda apparently has suffered from the V6 transmission debacle, as apparently, you, I, and others haven't forgot about it when considering new vehicles. At least that one is legit. I just think for every burned Honda transmission owner there are probably 100 Chrysler transmissions in the scrap heap.

Supposedly there's a "gasket" used with a TPMS and they doubled up on it. But the kits don't show anything that you'd want to double up on. Maybe @capriracer will stumble on this post and let us know if that's a crock. Whatever they did is okay so far - perhaps a thick layer of Chapstick? Give it a week. :)

And yeah, there's always rims on craigslist here. I could probably hang out and find a single match, but all four look like typical Michigan rims. So I'm sort of shopping for a set.

Had the same issue on my old Outback after moving to the UP. One shop was able to clean the rim enough to mostly fix the one slow leak on that car.

I believe Sandman has told us about stalling Fusions. Not good and what a pain. Last you need to be doing is scrambling to get another rental.
A waste of 2 hours of my life and a lot of anxiety!

At least the Cruze is black! I was lucky to get this beast....the only car they had.
Damn, when you're "lucky" to get a Cruze things have gotta be bad.

@imidazol97, stay outta this, OK. :o

No issues with my Fusion, but we have the plug-in electric version. Almost 9,000 miles on it.

Just before they came out I had the opportunity to drive the electric Fusion. Man I was impressed with it. Made me start to consider an electric vehicle.

Still no luck with the Ghia - a few random "send more pictures" from the Samba, but that is it.

Can't believe just crickets from the Craigs List ad.

Anybody have any luck using Ebay?

Oh, I think Ford has many black eyes. Huge black eye. There are those groups that Hate Ford because they are a GM man, and vice versa, (and same with MOPAR), and then there are those that lump all of the Big 3 into 1 category.

Ford does get some brownie points for not requiring a massive bailout at tax payer expense and loss. They've also shown sparks of effort (at least for a few years) of at least trying to make reliable durable vehicles.

Of course, there is the customer service story my older cousin told me about his Ford Truck. Still, I like the looks of the new Mustang.

If I stayed away from every make that someone I know had a customer service issue with I would be driving around in either a Lamborghini, Ferrari or a Bently and that's only because I don't know anyone who owned on.

Since you drive an Audi I can put you in touch with people that had issues with them.

This boggles my mind. Between things like this and the disasterous Focus transmissions how does Ford avoid a public black eye? Teflon?

Seems like toyota's runaway acceleration and Honda's trannies and others. If this were GM car...

I read somewhere what it is that's going wrong in the Fusion but can't recall right now. Friends bought a Fusion a few months ago, but I'm reluctant to tell them that this stalling is likely to happen to them.

IIRC Toyota did admit that there was an issue and even found that the gas pedal had a tendency to stick in a depressed position and hid that from the public and regulators. Didn't they pay a billion dollar plus fine over that?

lol....about lucky to get a Cruze........I gave you an official lol, at least I think it was an lol.

Cruze is kind of weird, not much room, the console storage is way back between and behind the seats...break my arm trying to open it. Not nearly as well laid out as the Fusion, but, feels better put together. I am glad the Cruze will be for a very limited time....I hand it back Friday and won't need a car until Sept 17 when we get back from Switzerland.

P.S. I will keep you posted on any news about Mikes.
