Basement reno now underway. Objective is to remove a terribly awful 1960s/early '70s reno and convert part of the space to unfinished basement, and partitioning off the rest to make a small sitting area along with a combo laundry/bathroom. Laundry is already there in a roughed-in space.
Most of the demo was done yesterday with debris being hauled away today. Luckily, no awful surprises found so far.
How about a flashback to stories from Sales from Lines? A non sales story. Last week my best friend's Dad gets a call from the Jeep dealership he leased his 2016 Grand Cherokee Overland from.
"Hi! Mr. ---? It's Sally from Rockland Jeep. The reason for my call is that used vehicles like your Grand Cherokee Overland are in very high demand right now. We can get you into a 2017 model for less than you are paying now most likely."
"Sally. You seem like a nice person, but I don't have time to BS. My car is 8 months old and has less than 10,000 miles. I like it and it is literally in perfect shape. How is it possible that you can get me out of the lease after only 8 months."
"Sir, we have special programs..."
"I'm currently paying $570 per month with $0 Down. I'm literally not willing to pay one cent more. If you can do this, then I'll make an appointment to come down there."
"I assure you sir that we are very serious about this. We can do what you requested."
He gets the manager on the phone. The manager yeses him to death. He makes an appointment for Saturday. Saturday comes. It's snowing, but the roads are decent. He goes to the Jeep dealer.
"Ok sir. We've got a 2017 Grand Cherokee Overland with the exact colors and options as yours. The monthly payment comes to $720."
He's livid at this point. I don't get it. I understand the fishing phone calls to drum up business, but to PO a customer like that and lie to him is just unreal.
That is just crazy and wrong
Correction, that is just being an outright LIAR.

I feel just the opposite about GM. The two I have now are the first GM cars I've ever owned and I think both of them are very innovative and well made vehicles. The Encore was one of the very first subcompact SUVs. If you look at early reviews people didn't know quite what to make of it. And the Volt is also in a class of its own.
GG, Make sure the CT6 is safe to drive...just saw this recall:
NEWS: GM is recalling certain 2016 Cadillac CT6 vehicles; SEAT BELTS Report Receipt Date: SEP 23, 2016 NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V687000 Component(s): SEAT BELTS Potential Number of Units Affected: 131
SEPTEMBER 2016 -- General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2016 Cadillac CT6 vehicles manufactured July 21, 2016, to July 22, 2016. The bolt that connects the front passenger seat belt webbing to the seat's anchor plate may be missing. Without the bolt, the seat belt webbing may detach from the seat anchor. If the seat belt webbing detaches from the seat anchor, the seat belt may not properly restrain the front seat passenger in the event of a crash
That would be @graphicguy's luck. He'd have to bring his loaner in for recall service.
I agree. Anyone in here want to give odds on that?

It was Russian hackers.
Funny guy. In addition to my Avalon, we do have a new EXL CRV and I'm looing to pick up another Jeep Grand Cherokee for our "extra" car since we gave our much loved 2003 CRV to our son. The Avalon is nice and it drives like a ten year old Buick. Whenever I see another one I'm pleased that I'm usually a decade younger than the other driver. I don't know how I got my identity back but I am so happy! Now when I get the thirteen staples pulled out of my head tomorrow I'll be even happier....don't ask!

When Son #1 had his Infinity in the shop due to his wife hitting a dear about a month ago, his rental was an Encore. Surprisingly he liked it but he could not buy one due to the size of it for his 2 hockey playing sons when they go to out of town hockey tournaments. His Kia van is needed for that type of hauling. But, otherwise he would have considered it.
I was pretty surprised by that.

Good question about how many other CTS's were afflicted by the same recall. Was it a whole production run from 2016? Or, was it a very limited production run? I would think it was limited given there really hasn't been any press on it that I'm aware of. Dealer didn't say he had 5-10-75 2016 CTS's in his shop with the same issue. I would imagine that would back them up quite a bit.
He did say that the wiring, the harness and the mounting hardware had failed on mine, to the point where the wiring was so close to the exhaust manifold that the insulation had melted on a couple of wires and the other two wires had been chafed by rubbing against the drive shaft. I can't really picture how that happened without me feeling something. But, apparently that's the issue.
Do you have a recall number or campaign or TSB number? Normally with a recall you are mailed a notification from GM. A quick search did not come up with any recall that sounded like what you describe.

He's not the demographic for the Encore for sure. It's more for empty nesters, singles, or couples with maybe 1 small child. It's also great for people with dogs.

LOL. For more than a year we've watched an Encore go through the drive thru at Chick Fil A. Driver is 60s or older with a heavy, long grey beard and a large dog sitting in front or in back. Just like you said.
And my wife's best friend now has an Encore lease after turning in her Equinox.
well, with the range, it would actually be like they gave you a higher line model to use for a few months while they waited for the parts!
GG, if they are giving you a nudge, might as well. you already know the drill. But this time, just take cash, not another car! Though that could be interesting. What would they even pay you, since this was a replacement for another lemon?
Yeah, with GG's Caddy history I'd just take the money and run. I mean, how many chances does a car maker get before you decide that they are just junk makers.

Just wait, ab, just wait! When I had my unfinished basement finished by a general contractor, we found buried treasures in crawl spaces and behind furnaces - underneath gravel - like soda cans, leaks in pipes, mold, spiders, mice and mouse nests, cracked joists, to name a few, A $10,000 job estimate turned out to be a $14,500 surprise. If I ever owned a house again, I would just sell it and buy a new one with an already finished basement.
Had my annual eye exam this morning. What I hate most about going in there is when they dilate your pupils and can't see worth a darn for 10-15 hours. Supposed they found an above-normal eye pressure but no evidence of glaucoma. I have to return in 5 weeks for them to check again. With the way my luck has been running, I would place a bet with Vegas or some other venue that there is something going on in there.
If I ever owned a house again, I would just sell it and buy a new one with an already finished basement.
That's what I did, 20 years ago! But that homeowner-finished basement from about 1970 was well past its best-before date. One of my favorite things were the plastic woodgrain cove and trim moldings everywhere. Went well with the '60s paneling and the glued-down indoor-outdoor carpet.
On a much smaller dollar note I had a similar issue with a Jenn Air range. All the digital buttons on the right side stopped working. So anything on that side -- say "oven clean" or any numerals from 6 through 9 and 0-- you couldn't use. It was under warranty so I was told they would order a new console module. Only Maytag, who owns Jenn Air, was only making them in small quantities and sometimes stopped making them altogether! It took THREE MONTHS for this part to arrive, and then another month to set up an appointment (because of staff cutbacks). All for a part under warranty! We got very creative at setting oven temperatures and the timer -- 411 for 400, say, or 351. At least we could still use the unit whereas poor old GG can't even drive his own car.
Whatever, I figured I would spend the money and get a new control board. Even watched YouTube vids on how to do it which made it seem not very hard. Only problem: the part is no longer available from LG and there is no stock anywhere I checked. This on what was then a 6 year-old appliance! LG corporate in Canada was no help. Unreal.
I have had 2 separate people tell me not to buy an LG appliance. It seems parts aren't available and they don't have much of a service network.
We had an LG dishwasher about 10 years ago, good washer, but no indicator to let you know if the dishes were actually washed or not. If we set the DW to wash, we put a magnet on the door to let us know the dishes are clean.
I agree with the former sales guy who is now a uber driver. Whatever it takes to get the customer into the dealership. I think the managers tell sales people to call all clients. My son recent returned his leased vehicle. The dealership he returned it to is still calling him asking when he is going to return his vehicle and they have a SPECIAL DEAL for him.
It is true of any business, it takes 7X the cost and work to land a new customer as it does to keep a former one.
I tried to tell that to Audi Canada. They could have sold 3 new cars by now - not counting the future, over $1200. That was before the sales dropped with the diesel debacle...now they would probably pay the bill and give me a free dinner if I would buy one of their cars.
Last night, my son and I went out for some BBQ. We were talking about his GTI (which he loves, BTW). Like Father like Son, he said he might start looking around in a couple of years...maybe even another GTI if they do a significant update.
The conversation turned to my CTS. We drove the loaner CT6 to dinner. He said it was "nice" (translated....OK for you, but I'd never drive one). I showed him the power, the features (which rival anything I've ever heard, or read about), etc. He asked me what I thought of it. As I told him, it's as good, or better than anything else in its segment. And, that he isn't the demographic Cadillac is shooting for. According to my son, neither am I. He may be right.
Then came the question about the elephant in the room....."how much longer they going to have your CTS?" Had no answer for him. As of yesterday, the dealership has had it for 3 weeks. Called this a.m. for a status update. They don't know when the part(s) will be in to fix it. They consider it undriveable (safely) as it is. So, no update, and no plans for the foreseeable future. They did ask how I liked the CT6....been good. No problems!
But, I am starting to think how totally ridiculous my Cadillac experiences have been. At first, it was mind boggling, then they couldn't seem to get out of their own way. Now, it really is becoming laughable.
I trully don't know what my next move is. I'm kind of numb by the whole Cadillac experience.
How could you not be numbed? . There is a brand new 5 series due out in 30-60 days. I'd give that a good looking over, to be sure. Or, have Cadillac give you a CT6!!!
Mike, Good suggestion. We'll see. Honestly, I'm just worn down. On the one hand, I'll don't want to shirk away from what I consider a total failure by the brand (at least with me). On the other hand, once I go down the road to start the buy back procedures all over again, it's weeks, if not months, of a total hassle.
At this stage, I might be happier just slapping some snow tires on the nearly 20 year old Mustang Cobra and use it as a daily driver. At least I know everything works, and it's been more dependable than any Cadillac I've ever owned. I'm kidding......sort of.
Maybe forget about all the car makes in this segment. Go with a tried and true Accord. All loaded up, even with every concievable option any car manufacturer is offering.....1/2 the price of anything in this segment. Haven't driven one since my former spouse's EX from 2013. But assume current ones drive as well, maybe even better. Reliable as a stone. Good MPG. Comfy. Handles well. Great resale.
I really don't need the (alleged) panache of the cars offered that I've been driving in recent years. They certainly haven't done anything to instill my confidence in them.
Careful there GG, sounds like you are getting older-----and wiser ! Us old guys know about reliability.

Since they are drilling into concrete, I expect lots of noise and lots of mess. Luckily I have my cleaning girls coming this afternoon.
If the Greek Squad does it right, they'll clean up before they leave, and it will be cleaner than when they got there with everything back it its same exact place. The noise they can't do anything about but it will end when they leave. The actual drilling won't take long because they'll have the right tool and bit to chew into the concrete.
Well, he installed everything and when he left, everything was working fine. I turned off the TV to go have some lunch and when I came back and turned on the TV again, the sound bar was not working, only the TV sound was working. So I called Geek Squad back and they said the original installer is supposed to call me back. That was over two hours ago, no call back. I am very unhappy - very, very disappointed!
Maybe the sound bar turns off when you turn the set off and you need to turn it back on. See if you can find a button to push somewhere.

Supposed they found an above-normal eye pressure but no evidence of glaucoma. I have to return in 5 weeks for them to check again. I came from a Ford family but their pathetic mid-70's offerings steered me toward Chevrolet; as a result I spent my misguided street racing youth behind the wheel of a Monte Carlo Q-ship. When I graduated law school I was eagerly awaiting the 3rd Generation Z/28 but was bitterly disappointed when I discovered that with a four speed 305 V8 the Z was slower than my four cylinder Plymouth Arrow GT 2.6(which had an extra cog as well). From that point on my interest in GM products went downhill. That said, I think today's GM products are exceptionally good overall- but the 1LE Camaro SS is about the only GM car I would actually want to own.

Not thinking mine was a widespread recall. Only way I knew about it....my dealer called me and told me there was a recall on my CTS and to bring it in as it was a safety issue. I don't know if mine is 1 of 1 or 1 of a 100,000 on the recall. That description and what the service manager told me is all I know....oh, and the fact they've had my car closing in on a month.

Might be a wider recall, but like with most, all the cars with rare exceptions are fine. Maybe the tighten up the bolt, or throw some loctite and a zip tie on, and good to go. Sadly, once again, you seemed to beat the caddy odds.

I have had 2 separate people tell me not to buy an LG appliance.
Maybe that advice doesn't apply to LG televisions. It seems like 80% of the hotels I stay in use them, and they work fine. That said, the company I work for is trying mightily to get out of dealing with mechanical devices (which is what I do) and focus only on electronic/software stuff. The mechanical products are hard to produce and even harder to offshore -- takes experience and good relationships with the suppliers. If you can't send it to India, they don't want to be involved.

Just think about what you just said.
Caddy is in the car selling biz not the car fixing biz. If you have ever been involved with any type of production you'd know that there is NOTHING that stops the assembly line. Hell can freeze over but that line ain't stopping. The thought is: "somebody will fix it later, that ain't my department".
Isn't that why we are still talking about this ?

LG ranges, fridges, and microwaves have good reputations. I think it was some washer-dryers that had problems.
From the Singapore Motorshow. I know it may be "for the show", but what do you think of the finish of the Toyota Harrier?
If it don't go, chrome it. I heard this a lot in the '50s and '60s. Still applies, in my world. I much prefer cast or cast/machined wheels to anything that's chromed, but, as always, WMMV.

I tried to tell that to Audi Canada. They could have sold 3 new cars by now - not counting the future, over $1200. That was before the sales dropped with the diesel debacle...now they would probably pay the bill and give me a free dinner if I would buy one of their cars.
Talk about penny wise and pound foolish!

They are working at a pretty decent clip.

Once on a mailing list, even after you pass away, mailings to your name will continue. I still get loads of mailing addressed to my Dad and he's been gone 19 months
*We bought our Florida place 5 years ago and I get more mail for the past owner than I get for myself. The thing is, he died a year ago, and was in prison for 6 years before that happened.

BTW....why don't they take one off the assembly line, or a built car?

Not thinking mine was a widespread recall. Only way I knew about it....my dealer called me and told me there was a recall on my CTS and to bring it in as it was a safety issue. I don't know if mine is 1 of 1 or 1 of a 100,000 on the recall. That description and what the service manager told me is all I know....oh, and the fact they've had my car closing in on a month.

Imagine.
