Had my annual eye exam this morning. What I hate most about going in there is when they dilate your pupils and can't see worth a darn for 10-15 hours. Supposed they found an above-normal eye pressure but no evidence of glaucoma. I have to return in 5 weeks for them to check again. With the way my luck has been running, I would place a bet with Vegas or some other venue that there is something going on in there.

Good question about how many other CTS's were afflicted by the same recall. Was it a whole production run from 2016? Or, was it a very limited production run? I would think it was limited given there really hasn't been any press on it that I'm aware of. Dealer didn't say he had 5-10-75 2016 CTS's in his shop with the same issue. I would imagine that would back them up quite a bit.
He did say that the wiring, the harness and the mounting hardware had failed on mine, to the point where the wiring was so close to the exhaust manifold that the insulation had melted on a couple of wires and the other two wires had been chafed by rubbing against the drive shaft. I can't really picture how that happened without me feeling something. But, apparently that's the issue.
Do you have a recall number or campaign or TSB number? Normally with a recall you are mailed a notification from GM. A quick search did not come up with any recall that sounded like what you describe.
GGs was the first one found with this problem. They are waiting until they can build more harnesses before they make it a recall.
BTW....why don't they take one off the assembly line, or a built car?
Just think about what you just said.
Caddy is in the car selling biz not the car fixing biz. If you have ever been involved with any type of production you'd know that there is NOTHING that stops the assembly line. Hell can freeze over but that line ain't stopping. The thought is: "somebody will fix it later, that ain't my department".
Isn't that why we are still talking about this ?

Manufacturers hate to do that, because it means a car will get built without that part....but, they have a customer waiting for a month for a part....and they are going to lose him any minute now.

Made a decision on the ductless mini-split system for our home. Ended up going with 3 zone Mitsubishi FH Ductless System - total of 30,000 BTUs. Gave them the deposit for the installation today and they'll be out in 2 weeks to do the installation (hopefully before baby arrives).
It is definitely not a cheap solution - if we had a furnace and central heat, it probably would have been roughly half of the cost to add AC. However, because our homes are not zoned or sized for centralized heat or A/C, these ductless systems are our only choice. I shopped the exact same setup across 4 vendors here in Seattle, the one I chose was not just the best price but also the best regarded by both customers and Mitsubishi for the installation.

I have had 2 separate people tell me not to buy an LG appliance.
Maybe that advice doesn't apply to LG televisions. It seems like 80% of the hotels I stay in use them, and they work fine. That said, the company I work for is trying mightily to get out of dealing with mechanical devices (which is what I do) and focus only on electronic/software stuff. The mechanical products are hard to produce and even harder to offshore -- takes experience and good relationships with the suppliers. If you can't send it to India, they don't want to be involved.
Imagine.
We've had issues and delays getting parts for our Samsung washer and dryer as well. They have required multiple repairs in less than 2 years. Knock on wood, no repairs in the last year. Never say never, but I doubt we will buy another Samsung set.

Yes.the problem with parts and service referred to LG appliances. TVs are a different story, in fact or 50 inch LG was a cheap model when we bought it 8 years ago and it still works fine. Not the greatest picture or color in the world, but for a base model it is OK for the bedroom.....by the time it goes on to watch the 10 pm news picture quality is of minimal concern.
Lots of posts lately, maybe we should limit posts to 2 a day per member.......I am going to have to make reading these my full time occupation. And, I better not go away for a one week vacation.

Samsung has had major appliance problems, washers flying apart, refrigerators leaking water, fires starting in dryers. They don't have their parts or their service distribution set up. My guess is they made their products....which are well designed, but they rushed them to market to get their foot in the door first, and will worry about the other stuff later, once they start making a profit.
It worked out OK for Hyundai and the Pony....that seems to be the new business model to follow.

I have a Samsung LCD TV. Only 3 years old, but no issues whatsoever. I have a Samsung 4 door fridge, about 5 years old, a little noisier than I expencted (I can actually hear it cycle on and off while in the kitchen). But, no issues.
I have an LG dishwasher, 5 years old, again no problems...same with LG Washer/Dryer...no issues.
Just got the LG OLED TV. New, but posted some pics here. Best picture quality I've ever seen in any TV, at any price, from any manufacturer.

Basically the way it works is that the condenser/heat pump live outside the house, and then tubing, power, and drainage is run along the outside of the house (covered house color cladding) to each of the rooms. The lines are punched through the wall into each room, and then heads are installed in each room that contain the blower and evaporator coil.
This type of system is more common in Europe and the middle east vs. centralized systems we have here.

I am continually amazed by my Fujitsu unit. Even on days that are bitterly cold outside (far colder than you would ever get where you are), the thing is pumping out great heat. The amazing thing is that my electric bill has barely changed, while my nat gas bill is virtually nil.

They are a much better version of the combined a/c-heat units that you find in a lot of hotels, those boxy, noisy all in one units. Perhaps that isn't a good comparison as the split system is quiet, doesn't take up much space and isn't an eye sore. How does it compare price wise to a standard ducted system?

i have a Samsung front load WD set. Probably 4 YO now? Maybe 3. Knock wood, no issues so far. And they work great at cleaning clothes (which frankly, is still the most important aspect!)
we got an LG fridge. I think 2 YO now. Again, knock wood, no issues. Nice and quiet, works well, good feature content.
we bought the Fridge at a local "mom and pop" shop. Discussed the parts issue with them (having read the reports) and he said they had no problems at this point getting parts as needed. Since they would be coming out to do the repairs if something happened, was good to me.
Also have an LG TV in the bedroom. I would not even try to fix that. Those suckers are disposable at this point if they break.

I should also add, it would have been considerably cheaper (and cleaner looking) if our builder had pre-wired and pre-piped the house for A/C like they've started doing on homes built after ours.
The hotel room A/C systems you see really are wholly self-contained, which is why they're so noisy and inefficient. This is quite a bit different, but the concept is the same in that I can efficiently control the heating and cooling in each room individually.

Our DVD/VHS combo player made by Toshiba, purchased at the Alamogordo, NM, Hasting's store about 2 1/2 years ago, went belly up sometime last weekend. Went to the Martin City, MO, Wal*Mart yesterday, and bought us a new Sony USB-friendly Progressive Scan DVD player. Cost? $29.88. You can trash Wal*Mart all you want but man, they still rule in a lot of pricing categories. Not all. But a whole mess of them, they do.
My Honda dealer still has my email linked to my old accord. So I get service notices for it, but addressed to Elizabeth (the lady that bought it 5 years ago!)
My buddy is already getting emails on his Mustang after less than two weeks (as I told him he would).
He forwarded one to me and it went into my spam folder. I guess my computer remembered what I did with all the solicitations I got on my own.

We have electric baseboard heaters in each room.
Air is circulated through the heads that are installed in each room. The head in each room contains a blower and an evaporator, not unlike a window box. The difference is these are ultra high efficiency units and there is no condenser inside. The condenser and heat pump are stored outdoors alongside the house.
For our main floor I'm getting a 15,000 BTU head, the master will get a 9000 BTU head and the nursery will get a 6000 BTU head. We are expecting it'll cut our electric bill in half in the winter months.

I'm in my bedroom watching my new TV (good grief, it covers a good percentage of my entire south wall) and I hear what sounds like a bird tweeting in the hallway. I go into the foyer/hallway and I hear nothing. I go back into my bedroom and I hear the tweeting again. I go back to the hallway and I hear nothing. So now, this is starting to get on my nerves, so to speak, so I go into my "Sherlock Holmes" mindset and think about this situation or, as driver would say, "...dilemNa..." and I decide to put down some pillows and a blanket on the hallway floor and wait for it to "tweet" again so at least I can identify the source of this bird.
About 10 minutes later, again the tweet! Low and behold, it's coming from the smoke detector which is connected to the building's alarm system. I look up, and there is a light flashing orange instead of the usual green. I don't think I have ever had to deal with this situation before, but I somehow remember that my Dad once told me that if I ever hear a strange sound coming form the hallway, it's the smoke detector's battery. So now, it begins to make sense to me. I try to think back to the day he told me about this and I remember something else - he told me to call security because they are the ones responsible for changing the batter - we are not supposed to do it ourselves.
So I pick up the phone and call the security office. They said they would put me on the list to have security come by and change the battery. I asked how long it would be and she responded that it will be sometime today, before midnight. I made the call at 4:00 PM. At 7:00 PM, I hear a knock at the door. It's the security guy - he must have been 6'6" tall, at the minimum. He told me he was here to replace the battery in the main smoke detector in the condo unit. He opened up the detector and replaced the "dying" battery with another 9 volt battery. Just as he was about to leave, he turned to me and said that he liked my new car! He said he was admiring it with his partner just before he came up to my unit. I thanked him for his kind words. He then says to me, "...you know something - you could have bought a condo in one of the older buildings for what you probably paid for that 740i!" I must have turned red as he turned around an left. But he was right - the 2 bedroom condos in the two story buildings (the first ones built) go for around $85,000. Luckily, I did not need another Condo - what I did need was a car that was easy to get in and out of.

I'd think a conventional central AC might be a problem Seattle, but don't really know. The homes seem to have an awful lot of glass and not many air ducts or returns. So, again with no personal knowledge, I'd think that if it was pretty hot out it might not be that effective trying to keep up. Sounds like what you got might be a better approach for many out there?

There is but you don't want to hear it. He was a sheriff before he went to prison. It isn't nice what he was charged with, but many people think he was framed. I have no idea whether he was guilty or not, when his wife sold us the place he threatened to have the deal cancelled since he was locked up and he didn't want her to sell.........he wrote one threatening letter to us and then died a little while later.....thank goodness (sorry, but,it saved us a lot of trouble).

In the newer homes you're spot on. The newer town homes and standalone town homes (like ours) are now coming with these ductless systems because they're more effective at handling the heating and cooling needs of this style of house.
In the older homes the ducts and air returns are less of a problem but they also tend to have more space to put them.

If you'll excuse me now, I need to go douse the flames shooting from my American Express card.
If I may ask, what kind of heat do you have? We have all electric heat but no central AC so there's no ductwork. I've wondered about those Mitsu systems. How do they circulate conditioned air without ducts?
We had a house that had no duct work, and it was in the country so no gas heating. We had electic heating and in the large livingroom/dining area we had electric grid built in the ceiling. Good until there is a break somewhere. For a/c we had a roof unit....very efficient.
Doesn't anser your question but there are ways it can be done.
Once on a mailing list, even after you pass away, mailings to your name will continue. I still get loads of mailing addressed to my Dad and he's been gone 19 months
*We bought our Florida place 5 years ago and I get more mail for the past owner than I get for myself. The thing is, he died a year ago, and was in prison for 6 years before that happened.
Check the hollow walls in your Condo for an "Al Capone" type stash of $100 bills. Ya never know what the jailbird may have used that Condo for!
Why didn't I think of that. I am going to get right on it.
Driver, I can see you now coming out of your condo unit covered in white dust from the plasterboard walls. I must say, it becomes you - you are a true DIY kinda guy!
I don't fix too much, but I heard the same tweeting sound as you did about a week ago....only I got up on a ladder and replaced the battery myself. btw...they now have 5 year and even 10 year (I believe...but 5 year for sure) batteries, that can save you doing it every year.
*We must have gone through 4 pages today. Probably 25 posts a page, except JMonroes are about 1/2 a page, that's about 100 posts....how am I supposed to get anything done around here?
End of Story!
I could have told you that you would need a battery. Just yesterday Mrs. j heard the combo smoke alarm carbon monoxide detector chirping so I replaced the 9 volt battery.
When I had my furnace and A/C replaced in August of 2008 the installer told me to get a self contained carbon monoxide detector because the combo units are not very reliable for carbon monoxide because, according to him, they are set to alarm just below the lethal level. I could not confirm that but since Mrs. j heard that I went out and got a Kidde AC powered carbon monoxide detector with battery backup and a digital read out for about 60 bucks.
In case anyone is wondering they don't last forever and I had to replace that beast in May of 2016.
Just wanted to keep you guys safe but it'll cost ya.

I hate those beeps. Too infrequent to easily narrow down, since I have about 11 in the house. Mine are hard wired, so the battery is really redundant but does last a long time.
last year, one started going off, and would not stop. Had to keep pulling them down to isolate the bad unit. Since they were at that point all past their due date, I ended up having to buy a whole new set and swap out brackets and units. That was tedious, and tough on the arms working over my head like that. But, new ones are much more stylish, and quiet!
I have 2 battery only CO2 units too. the one near the furnace started moaning a few months back. Yup. Hit expiration date, and had a message to replace since it was too old. Back to the store for a replacement.
Been there, done that! They never make things easy. Why not have a base you wire in once, then when the alarm expires in 7 years or whatever, you just take the old one off and screw a new one in. I may not know DIY but I know how to make life simpler.
well, you still use the plug. thankfully that did not change. They just updated the unit design. So you had to replace the bracket that the head unit snaps into. The box at least still worked. So loosen 2 screws, twist off the plate, put on new plate, tighten it up, and snap on the new unit. 11 times.

But if you were a manufacture, you'd be out of business in 2 years. Plus, as you have pointed out, technology changes and there are plenty of people who want the latest.

I think I understand your feelings there, Mike. But it's your money, you worked hard all of your life, and it's time to enjoy some of the rewards. The most I ever spent on a car (or truck) was $32k on this last Ford pickup. But I'm thinking this time I may go a little higher.
I only paid $50k for this house I'm living in, well $60k counting the repairs. And I'm not going that high. But I am thinking about $35k to $40k. Which is something I never thought I would do, but I have the money, I earned it, and why not?
After all of the scares you've had recently, with your own doctor surprised you pulled through this last round, definitely do what makes you happy. All of your friends here are pulling for you, and we're all very glad that you're back with us posting once again.

This type of system is more common in Europe and the middle east vs. centralized systems we have here.
Go figure.

I am continually amazed by my Fujitsu unit. Even on days that are bitterly cold outside (far colder than you would ever get where you are), the thing is pumping out great heat. The amazing thing is that my electric bill has barely changed, while my nat gas bill is virtually nil.

we got an LG fridge.
