@graphicguy At least they are taking care of you this time and providing you with good loaners. But I agree with you, the whole experience has been subpar. It's a shame as they seem to build decent cars after 40+ years of junk but you said it best, they can't seem to get out of their own way.
Last night, my son and I went out for some BBQ. We were talking about his GTI (which he loves, BTW). Like Father like Son, he said he might start looking around in a couple of years...maybe even another GTI if they do a significant update.
The conversation turned to my CTS. We drove the loaner CT6 to dinner. He said it was "nice" (translated....OK for you, but I'd never drive one). I showed him the power, the features (which rival anything I've ever heard, or read about), etc. He asked me what I thought of it. As I told him, it's as good, or better than anything else in its segment. And, that he isn't the demographic Cadillac is shooting for. According to my son, neither am I. He may be right.
Then came the question about the elephant in the room....."how much longer they going to have your CTS?" Had no answer for him. As of yesterday, the dealership has had it for 3 weeks. Called this a.m. for a status update. They don't know when the part(s) will be in to fix it. They consider it undriveable (safely) as it is. So, no update, and no plans for the foreseeable future. They did ask how I liked the CT6....been good. No problems!
But, I am starting to think how totally ridiculous my Cadillac experiences have been. At first, it was mind boggling, then they couldn't seem to get out of their own way. Now, it really is becoming laughable.
I trully don't know what my next move is. I'm kind of numb by the whole Cadillac experience.
How could you not be numbed? . There is a brand new 5 series due out in 30-60 days. I'd give that a good looking over, to be sure. Or, have Cadillac give you a CT6!!!
I have 2 friends who live in the area. One is pretty well to do, lives in Soho, doesn't own a car but rents when he wants to leave town. He always talks about getting a car (and asks me questions), but always has questionable choices, and I think he's too frugal to rent a garage. The other lives in Newport NJ, just across the river from Manhattan - shares a highrise 3 bedroom apartment that I think rents at well over $4K/month - so breaking it up 3 ways helps. I stayed there on my visit - nice view, easy to get to the city, but most people won't be able to afford to live alone. Might be worth it for the easy commute though.
if you have enough money, you keep the car living in Manhattan for weekend duty. Only the plebians rent when they need one.
having lived up there, I think I would be more likely to live in town if I worked there. Not cheap to be close enough to not have a huge commute, and even some of the shorter ones kinda stink.

Mike, Good suggestion. We'll see. Honestly, I'm just worn down. On the one hand, I'll don't want to shirk away from what I consider a total failure by the brand (at least with me). On the other hand, once I go down the road to start the buy back procedures all over again, it's weeks, if not months, of a total hassle.
At this stage, I might be happier just slapping some snow tires on the nearly 20 year old Mustang Cobra and use it as a daily driver. At least I know everything works, and it's been more dependable than any Cadillac I've ever owned. I'm kidding......sort of.
Maybe forget about all the car makes in this segment. Go with a tried and true Accord. All loaded up, even with every concievable option any car manufacturer is offering.....1/2 the price of anything in this segment. Haven't driven one since my former spouse's EX from 2013. But assume current ones drive as well, maybe even better. Reliable as a stone. Good MPG. Comfy. Handles well. Great resale.
I really don't need the (alleged) panache of the cars offered that I've been driving in recent years. They certainly haven't done anything to instill my confidence in them.

Remind us again of what led to the service visit/diagnosis and what the unobtainium parts are.

Heh... unobtainium... don't they need that to replenish the headlight fluid?
GG, Don't make a decision until you give it a bit more time....and 3 weeks for a new car to be held up is ridiculous. Have they recalled other CTS's and are they giving everyone a loaner, or is this one of those problems they can't solve?
We lost confidence in the Audi A4 after the clutch problem....got the GLK and I am happy we did, much better and safer vehicle.
I think you are a bit ahead of the game since you have a newer car for the same price...less depreciation, but, I think your cars are grounded more than on the road.
I would take it back when it is ready, and then start shopping around. The Accord may suit you these days, but, your son won't be impressed-maybe a good thing, he won't want to borrow it.
Take your time, test a few cars, but, I wouldn't try another Caddie.
Personally, if they were providing me with an equivalent (or better) loaner car, I would have no problem with them keeping my car in the shop for months at a time. The miles go on their car, not mine (thus enhancing the trade in value). And ... I would probably ask them to swap cars every 2 weeks or so, just so that I could get the chance to drive a bunch of different cars.
Uh oh, I have my first problem with the Accord. The rear driver side door switch is not turning on the overhead lights when the door is opened, where the light does come on with the others. Time to trade?

Since they are drilling into concrete, I expect lots of noise and lots of mess. Luckily I have my cleaning girls coming this afternoon.

So true. Anyone who calls themselves a pro doesn't leave a mess. Back in the day when I did my share if drilling into concrete in some labs that had to be very clean, one guy manned the hammer drill and other a vacuum hose right under the drill bit. Almost no mess at all but we did a clean sweep before we left. It was part of our job.
The almost funny thing about this is when Mrs. j heard me telling friends how to avoid making a mess when they drilled into concrete and I told my stories from "back in the day", she said, "Oh, so you know how to use a vacuum. You could have fooled me".

@graphicguy Why not ask the dealer for a CTS loaner? If the dealer had sent you out with a car to drive while waiting for a part that might have a safety factor problem in it if it fails, the naysayers would be saying they shouldn't have sent you out with a car that is not totally safe. (I think that's what the other dealer did with the steering problem vehicle.) And we'd hear the whining, post after post. LOL
I don't recall the exact character of the wiring they found needs to be replaced. Maybe it's been mentioned in earlier posts. But GM has really improved many of their cars in the past many years. My 14 Malibu is a premium car within its segment despite the hating from the MSM and people claiming GM only has made junk for 40 years. Gimme a break. In fact, since my 89 Century things have really been upward bound.
If GM found a flaw in a wiring harness and redesigned it and is waiting to catch up supply for factory as well as service parts, more power to them. Look how many years Honda has fluffed on airbags, transmissions, block seeps, etc., on various models and been given lots of latitude along with lots of Hondaphiles for their brand yelling down anything else. Look at VW's problems and cover ups of their lies and lawbreaking. Seems we hear a lot less about that than the GM ignition switch redesign problem. It's never ceased to amaze me how foreign brands are given a pass by their proponents. I recall how when I test drove a 2003 Accord and found the same odd things about its steering, popping in the A-pillar when exiting the driveway at the dealer which flexed the body, and other things, that people on the forum were being called trolls who said they had those problems in their own vehicle.

But none of those car owners have gone through what our GG has been through. He'd have to be a saint to put up with this much longer. Sure, it is great he gets a loaner this time, after being put through hell and back twice before. Meanwhile he has a new car which he doesn't get to enjoy driving. And, the miles he is saving won't mean much on a trade-in, especially when he trades it in before the two year mark. I am sure he would rather be driving his own car, and know it is fixed and roadworthy.

Seems we live in a different world. I didn't read an article about GM ignition in a while. I constantly come across articles about VW's cheating. I think both were examples of terrible conduct and it seems GM is actually so far getting much less punishment from the government and press after the original surge (which was understandable). Nobody has been arrested at GM so far for intentionally falsifying records (part redesign without changing part number), VW sees its first arrest and the CEO cancelled the trip for obvious reasons. I agree that GM didn't get much credit for long time for doing better job than before, but they also got lots of government help allowing them to break the bankruptcy laws to appease the unions and move on. I wouldn't buy GM's vehicle in America not because it's some evil empire (they all are), but because their styling and design philosophy does not fit my idea of a vehicle. I don't like the styling (but it's low on my list), they don't offer hatchbacks/wagons on sedan's suspensions (except now Cruze, but I'm past 20Kish compact sedans), some of their Cadillac's commercials were offensive and repellent to me (one with Bowie's "Fame" tune for the Escalade would probably be my top most offensive car commercial ever, or at least one with worst taste), but again - I don't buy, or not buy based on commercials.
I might buy an Opel, if I lived in Europe (at least would consider). I also wouldn't mind getting a new Chevy, like your Malibu, as a vacation rental. I may even prefer it over other typical brands. It all depends on the actual model and trim. Avis usually has them well equipped, Enterprise does not.
The thing that bothers me in today's partisan world (political, religious, social, economic) is what I call "selective outrage". People constantly excuse questionable conduct of their favorite party as "no big deal", but scream bloody hell every time the opposing party's regional official's brother-in-law of third cousin's stepaunt's nephew jaywalks on empty street. I'm truly fed up with that.
@graphicguy - are they a stand alone caddy dealer? If not, see if they'll give you a C7 Corvette Stingray for a weekend.
Nope...it's a stand alone Caddy dealership, but part of a much larger dealership group owned by one person. They've been good to me, actually (vs the last dealership).
AB amd IMID....it was a recall. I took it in as the dealer contacted me about it and said it could be a safety issue. Turned out to be a wiring harness, wiring and some other associated parts. Apparently, my harness and wiring (which had the insualtion melting) had somehow fallen into some other parts.
I felt no issues with it, and had no problems. It was the service manager that told me this, and said it shouldn't be driven. To me, just put in a new harness and install new wiring. But, there seems to be something more to this that I'm not aware of.
I have no problem driving their cars. However, given the past, and how this CTS is turning out, there isn't any confidence I feel regarding Cadillac right now.

Well, he installed everything and when he left, everything was working fine. I turned off the TV to go have some lunch and when I came back and turned on the TV again, the sound bar was not working, only the TV sound was working. So I called Geek Squad back and they said the original installer is supposed to call me back. That was over two hours ago, no call back. I am very unhappy - very, very disappointed!

If it worked once, it should work again. Couple of things....
1) the soundbar should have a seperate remote. If it does, turn on the soundbar seperately from the TV and cable box 2) if it doesn't have a seperate remote, it should have an "on/off" switch physically somewhere on the unit. Turn that on
I'll assume the TV or the Cable Box has a universal remote. They may have programmed it wrong (if they programmed it all all).

Beware of Geeks bearing gifts.
My soundbar is connected to the TV by a HDMI cable that apparently has only one function: to turn it on or off when the TV turns on or off. The sound seems to be transferred via an optical cable of some sort. Seems very strange.

It's great to see this dealer stepping up and keeping you in comparable vehicles. But I agree with your last sentence, Cadillac hasn't done anything to earn your confidence. You've given them more than a fair chance, and while the new dealer has helped ease the pain of Cadillac's latest shortcoming I'd say move on.
I'm numb. My friend's son just died in a car accident on my road 2 hours ago. He was a 37 yo "yahoo" who sped on our 30 mph dirt road all of the time. And I'm sure that he didn't wear a seatbelt. He hit a tree and was killed a mile from my house. I drove by before the EMS arrived and knew that it was bad. I stopped at the dad's house and told him to get there. BTW, I was meeting with the volunteer fire chief at our church when the call came in. Accident on my road. WHAT?!? I live on a 1.3 mile long dead end dirt road with a 30 mph speed limit and there is NO snow or ice here in Northern Vermont. Maybe it was a hit a deer/car? Nope. Dumb young man ran off or the road and hit a tree. HOW? All that I can guess is that he had a fight with his GF and sped off. Thank god he didn't take anyone out. His dad and this son built my house. Not my best friend, but this is a VERY small town and it's hard to stay to not call most people you know, "a friend". Sorry if I ramble, but I can't process right now

It's taken 3 trips from the Geek Squad to fix my TV and Internet problems. I'm awaiting another one today. Sometimes it's complicated diagnostics, sometimes it's hard to pair everything up. They've been pretty good to me so far so I'm hopeful this is the last visit and I'll be good to go. My problem was the interface between the Cable company, the modem and router, and connecting both in a way that sent a signal to my new TV. Turns out the cable co router and modem is too weak to power all my devices (and there aren't a lot of them). Only the cable folks want you to pay rent for their system so they don't tell you that. They also installed some entry point gizmo that effectively killed the interface with my TV. Grrr!

@graphicguy posted earlier that he brought the car in because of a recall the dealer brought to his attention. The issue here is the length of time it's taking to return his car to him and moreso the fact that GM can't offer a timeline for a fix.
GM has improved considerably from their darkest days, but clawing your way back to being competitive won't cut it in today's environment.

Seems we live in a different world. I didn't read an article about GM ignition in a while. I constantly come across articles about VW's cheating.
I'm considering the density of the mentions of GM's faults with regard to the ignition switch redesign without a noted part number correction and the folks mentioning that usually sometimes had a long diatribe about GM's other past faults in various vehicles. If we compare mentions in the car mags the switch debacle may be equaled by coverage of the dieselgate, especially since the arrest. As far as GM, there should have been an arrest. We agree.
I agree that GM didn't get much credit for long time for doing better job than before, but they also got lots of government help allowing them to break the bankruptcy laws to appease the unions and move on.
But to my perception they got saddled with higher labor costs because the government was more interested in giving benefit to the union, certain ones at least, involved with GM, instead of letting GM shake loose of high union costs--and lots of deadwood.
Yup. I dislike those who put in snipes at one side into posts because theirs is the PC side and they don't get challenged for things they hold as opinion, whether cars or other topics that ooze in here sometimes.
I live in a Hondaphilic area (Western Ohio with lots of Honda plants in the rural north toward Lima) and I still am amazed when a car show admits there are certain problems with certain cars, such as Civics. Several weeks ago the radio show repair guy in Cincy said to a caller they had repaired several engines for, I believe, head gasket leaks on some years back about 6 years, and that was likely to be the problem with the caller's own Civic. A Columbus show that's somewhat similar passes off callers' problems on certain problems but really dishes out the relish if it's GM's or Chrysler (Fiat) problems. Used to criticize Fords, but then the sponsor company bought a Ford dealership many months ago.
Sounds like you try to be evenhanded. I probably am partial to GM because they're the underdog that everyone (used) to be free to denigrate.
Thanks everyone for your input and feedback re: my TV and Soundbar. Since I had all kinds of problems getting Geek Squad out to properly set up the system, I just called VIZIO tech suppprt. A nice young lady had the problem diagnosed in 3 minutes. She walked me through the set up again and PRESTO - everything is working great. I feel like my bedroom is a theater. 55" set would have been way too big - 50" is perfect. Picture and sound quality are amazing.
Everything is now controlled by my cable remote. Thanks again everyone!

Good for you. Maybe you can help me with my landline and DSL from Frontier. When it rains in cold weather, we get crackling on voice and no dial tone and internet that goes in and out. It's out at the wrong times. I've tried yelling at them when I called 7 days after the first call for service. They said they'd get out here within 8 days. Yikes. I called back today and got it escalated.

The almost funny thing about this is when Mrs. j heard me telling friends how to avoid making a mess when they drilled into concrete and I told my stories from "back in the day", she said, "Oh, so you know how to use a vacuum. You could have fooled me".

Why not ask the dealer for a CTS loaner?

1) the soundbar should have a seperate remote. If it does, turn on the soundbar seperately from the TV and cable box
2) if it doesn't have a seperate remote, it should have an "on/off" switch physically somewhere on the unit. Turn that on
I'll assume the TV or the Cable Box has a universal remote. They may have programmed it wrong (if they programmed it all all).
Let us know if any of that works.
My soundbar is connected to the TV by a HDMI cable that apparently has only one function: to turn it on or off when the TV turns on or off. The sound seems to be transferred via an optical cable of some sort. Seems very strange.

Turns out the cable co router and modem is too weak to power all my devices (and there aren't a lot of them). Only the cable folks want you to pay rent for their system so they don't tell you that. They also installed some entry point gizmo that effectively killed the interface with my TV. Grrr!

GM has improved considerably from their darkest days, but clawing your way back to being competitive won't cut it in today's environment.

seriously, though, have your driven them? Which did you prefer? Mazda would be my personal preference, but for no good reason.

For my TV, I can select either 'TV speakers' or 'Audio system'.

I've tried yelling at them when I called 7 days after the first call for service. They said they'd get out here within 8 days. Yikes. I called back today and got it escalated.
