Printer problem. Replaced an HP printer that had its printheads in a carriage and the ink was replaced with 4 ink cartridges without individual printheads. Problem, the printhead setup clogs eventually and can't be cleaned and don't work by replacing just the holder with the printheads (I had a spare).
Solution: buy a replacement printer with printheads in cartridge which means the tricolor cartridge and black cartridge. The 4-cartridge setup without the printheads was not cheaper even though you weren't buying replacement printheads in each cartridge.

Shopped Microcenter. Salesperson figured out what I wanted and I bought a cheap laser printer that works great and a cheap Canon with scanner on top that was cheap for my wife's need for color occasionally.

Problem: the Canon did not have ink cartridges inside the box.
Solution: return to Microcenter. After the [non-permissible content removed]'t manager opened the third box and found Canon was not putting the ink cartridges inside, she was going to give me ink cartridges off the shelf. Then the store decided that was too expensive since they only stocked XL size cartridges. Just wanted me to return printer. I decided Okay, but I wouldn't find another low cost printer in brand I thought was trustworthy. It showed in my body language. Eventually I was given a refund for the printer, and told to take it as a free printer. I bought the two XL cartridges for 140% of what the printer had cost and went home happy.

Tired of HP's ink and cartridge games.
Tired of Canon's change to no cartridges without noting such on the box and literature. They do note that they don't incude a USB to printer cable which is a $5 item, but fail to mention the $30 ink cartridges missing.

Is there a printer brand that's inexpensive to run with color ink, and doesn't lose connection on wireless setups meaning it won't wake up on print demand? The failure to wake on print by wireless was the most common negative of many printers.

My Canon Pixma 450 serues is a great cheap printer/scanner but alas, it does have that problem you mention. It totally sucks in wireless mode; otherwise dead reliable--and I use it constantly. I dont' think "wireless" and "cheap" go together very well.

Yesterday I put on some music in the living room while we we were getting the house together for a party. Kids were in the playroom so I turned it up a little. First thing I notice is my subwoofer (an older 12" Klipsch) is way off. So I go to adjust it, junior must have been fiddling with the controls. After I dial it back in I crank the system up and it's rattling something fierce.

WHAT? It couldn't be blown as the system never gets a workout anymore. Nope, reach into the port and pull out a toy... I wonder what else is I there now. Lol. I couldn't help but laugh.

I think I must have stepped on almost every one of Son #1's match box cars at one time or another when I didn't have my slippers on in the middle of the night a few times when his Mother rolled over in bed and said, "If you are getting up can you check on him, I think I heard something". I told her, "I wasn't getting up, You woke me up". I'm a very sound sleeper but since I was now up, I "checked on him".

Whatever she heard it was nothing compared to the roar I let out when stepping on those match box cars at 2 AM. :@

Went out in friends 2014 Cadillac XTS. He loves his Caddies, gets a new one about every 2 or 3 years. His favorite was a 1984 Berritz....paid $42000 for it back then. Licence plate said 1 of 91 because there were only 91 sold in Canada. Must have been quite the car.

The 2014 XTS is a nice vehicle to be a passenger in. I don't know about handling, but it is a nice car to ride in.

He can still buy something similar.

That doesn't look bad for a car with over 200K miles on it.

When are you going to look at it? B)

It says gthe odometer says 36000 miles. Of course it says that is what the odometer says, it doesn't say how many miles are really on it. :@
You can bet your bippy it has more miles than the 37,777 that the add says.

Maybe it was in the shop for most of the last 30 years. ;)

Well, being that it was a Caddy I can't argue too much with that.

It was probably right next to one of @graphicguy's Caddies at one time or another. :'(

Laser printers have dropped in price so much, that I won't buy ink jet printers anymore. Lasers cost more initially. But, they're more reliable (no clogged jets), will last longer, are quicker, among a host of other advantages. In the long run, they end up being cheaper as you don't have to replace them nearly as often.

If I printed much, myself of my wife, I'd have gotten a color laser. But our print needs are sparse and far between. So if the ink cartridge printheads clog with lack of use, replace, or throw the printer out and get a new one. LOL.
The Pantum laser I bought was recommended by salesman who said some of their sales folks had bought them for home and had no problems. Replacement cartridges are $39 for small and $59 for large. Scanning the internet it looks llike Pantum uses Samsung engines. MC had lasers by Samsung for $79 and $99 IIRC.

So I've got two printers for $39 with $59 of XL ink cartridges in one. Perhaps a lifetime supply.

Otherwise color laser for $300 would have been my choice. I've tired of HP's games and high prices on ink.

But the Pantum/Samsung cartridges lock when they reach their total page setting. There are workarounds on the internet to redo the firmware in the toner cartridges to allow for refilling. Sort of like new chips for autos to get more power!

The Pantum has a footprint the size of 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper except for the feeder tray/output tray.

Here is my rant for today. I just read about a woman in Nevada who died of an infection. She was treated with every available antibiotic but none of them worked. Antibiotics that are approved in Europe would have knocked out the infection, but they are not approved for use in the U.S. Docs just said there was nothing they could do.

My question is, if the patient had been someone very important, say someone like the President of the U.S., would the outcome have been the same?

funny coincidence. Yesterday I was going nuts trying to get my printer to work. Not only did it stop catching wireless (though turns out, it was because my phone had switched to a 2nd WIFI network we have), but my fallback (the crappy dell desktop it is hard wired to) would not work either. Much poking around, cursing, a beer, and running a diagnose/repair routine seemed to do nothing. Thankfully I figured out the wife situation and got what I needed printed. then, for no apparent reason, I tried printing off email on the Dell, and it worked. So, I guess I really am a genius.

Imid...probably not as much of an issue with laser vs inkjet. Those inkjets have a tendency to dry out if you don't use them much. So, the jets themselves get clogged.

Toner goes further in a laser, but it costs more. But, they last a lot longer than the laser jet cartridges, too.

inkjets clog easily if not used, lasers don't clog

Generally inkjet printers have a price per page of around 20 cents, although this includes both black and colour cartridges — if you intend to print only black, ongoing print costs are generally 7-8 cents per page. Cheap black-and-white laser printers have a price of around 6c per page on average. If you spend more on a laser printer, the cost per page generally drops quickly.

Larger laser printers have additional ongoing costs when compared to inkjets: they often require an additional fuser cartridge or the replacement of parts with a maintenance kit.(never done that is over 10 years)

Print speed and text print quality
When it comes to printing black and white text pages, laser printing is unbeatable. Even in low-end cheaper monochrome laser models you can expect print speeds of up to 20 pages per minute. Inkjets are significantly slower, with budget printers rarely printing more than 6 pages per minute of black text.

And inkjet can smear easily. Laser dries instantly. Cartridges are more and unless they changed you need ones for each color. But, they last much longer and don't dry out.

I remember buying a slightly USED HP Deskjet Printer in about 1989 I think. I was happy to pay 500.00 for it t the time since a new one was over 700.00. Remember?

Now, they give printers away and stick it to us on the ink cartridges! I recently had Costco refill ours with excellent results. In the past the results weren't so good!

Both of my new printers, Canon MG3600 and Pantum 2500w, work great on wireless for me, knock on wood. But I did a lot of reading reviews before I connected each.
I recall my first laser was an HP NTR which was compatible with my Apple LC III. That way I didn't have to buy an Apple laserprinter at their typical overpriced rate. I believe the NTR was 1700 or 1200.

Every once in a while I'll see those old adds for Radio Shack Computers (TRS 80) and am amazed at the prices for floppy drives, monochrome monitors, dot matrix printers, etc.

Early in my career I worked for Control Data out of Minneapolis. I didn't have a home office then (as I have had for the last 20+ years), but they outfitted me with an OSBORNE "portable" computer as standard issue. I think it weighed 20+ pounds. And calling it portable was really stretching the far reaches of what one would call portable.

I had a TRS80 Model III. Bought it used from a kid attending a snobbish private school. He was upgrading.
I put in aftermarket floppy drives. Built my own internal rack for them.

Bought a sealed copy of a software product on Ebay. Supposed to be sealed retail version. The label didn't look quite right on the outside of the box. I think part of it is supposed to be holographic and have a color change.

d I opened the box and the authentic disk inside had a misspelled word in the label and the outer holographic ring and the inner holographic ring don't line up. The arrows in each are supposed to point to each other.

I bought it knowing Ebay would back it up if the seller didn't. But I'm surprised Ebay doesn't want to confiscate the counterfit product rather than seeing if the seller will effect a return. If the seller doesn't, then Ebay will refund my paid price.

No way is that disc even going into my computer to see what it does.

Out of the blue my wife hands me an ad for the local Mitsu dealer who is offering big discounts on 2016s. She liked this one:

If the claim of a $24110 MSRP is true that's about a 25% discount. Assuming that these aren't demos with miles what do you think? If it matters I think this guy is one of the top sellers nationwide. He seems to buy up a lot of left overs and discount heavily.

Ok I have a question for you, maybe someone here can help me (if not I'll have to bug our IT department Tuesday to see if they can help). The other day going through posts in this forum my browser (firefox) started to freeze up repeatedly, I tried to close it out but couldn't so I turned the computer off. When I started it back up nothing really happened. In reality it was just taking its own sweet time starting up, I just let it sit and do its own thing and it took well over an hour to get from turning it on to having my desktop showing.

Looking around I saw that the most recent windows update failed so I reinstalled the update and ran a viral scan and disk scan and both were negative. So now the computer is booting up much faster but still slower than I want but my main issue is when starting up most programs I get this error:

"This application was unable to start correctly (0x0000006). Click OK to close the application."

Other than backing up my files and doing a system restore or buying another computer does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this mess?

I had two Kaypros (in sequence) between about '86 and '88, floppy disks and all. Compared to working through the "assistant" at work to get memos written and edited, it was an entirely new and better world.

I think it would be a good replacement for the PT Cruiser.

The price is good but it is really one year old at this point, not a big deal if you are keeping the car for more than 6 years.

Edmunds gives it 4.5 out of 5 with these comments:
    pros

Respectable fuel economy with 2.0-liter engine
    Generous warranty coverage
    Well-equipped for the price.
    cons

Loud acceleration (especially with 2.0-liter engine)
Continuously variable transmission (CVT) is aggravating due to slow responses
Some interior materials look and feel cheap
Jarring ride quality on bumpy roads
Doesn't feel sporty despite the name.

You can't get too much for under $20k, so it's a good buy in that way. For a little car just to go to the store or work and back, if you aren't into handlig or feel of the road, it is a pretty good buy.

Looks like a great price and a good buy. Auto rags have not been very kind to it, probably because there is very little ad revenue involved ! I notice it has the bigger 2.4 engine also instead of the 2.0. It is advertised as new, so you get the 5 year 60,000 mile b to b warranty and 10 year 100,000 miles on the powertrain.

Heck, I even think it looks good. If I just had blue eyes to match that color I'd come up there and buy it out from under you !!

Lowest mileage examples (under 5k) at auction for outlander ES AWD 4-cyl are pushing $16k, which would make those right about $18.5k retail anyway, so I'd say that is a good price.

Every once in a while I'll see those old adds for Radio Shack Computers (TRS 80) and am amazed at the prices for floppy drives, monochrome monitors, dot matrix printers, etc.

I had a TRS80 Model III. Bought it used from a kid attending a snobbish private school. He was upgrading.
I put in aftermarket floppy drives. Built my own internal rack for them.

...they outfitted me with an OSBORNE "portable" computer as standard issue.

    I remember those. Tiny screen.

That's the one.....(not so) fond memories.

Houdini.....that screen was way too small to show anything more than a few lines of text. The theory was we could stay in constant communication with corporate regardless of where we were. This was mid-'80s and we had a very rudimentary and way advanced for the time, email system. We had 2400 baud modems we could plug into the Osborne and get different directives and decisions quicker than playing phone tag with engineering, exec staff, etc.

Before Control Data started selling off assets to stay afloat, they actually installed those "bag phones" into our cars. Heady times!

I think everyone who was on the road had one of those bag phones at one time. Back in 1992 I had a Cadillac Deville as a company car for a while, courtesy of a boss that got fired. It had a hard wired cell phone with a big whip antenna that actually worked great.

Well, just about anything would be a good replacement for the 90s design and poor build quality of the Chrysler but Edmunds and most other auto reviews are pretty negative. I was wondering if 25% off was enough for a 1 year old car.

oldfarmer50 - I am one who likes Mitsubishi, and I do think they make cars with solid powertrains. This deal is very aggressive on their part for a new '16 Outlander Sport. 25% off? Ehh...or 18-20% off. Great price, good-lookin' car and an uunbeatable Long-Haul Warranty.

Well I did some more diagnostics on the laptop and got a "short DST failure" which usually means a failing hard drive. So that means getting it up and running in the shape it's in and doing a final backup of my files and running away from it. That also means accessing these forums via my phone for now.

Maybe, right now I do have the wife's computer to use. I have looked at some stuff online, just looking for a laptop that's basic stuff. I want a decent sized hard drive as I don't want to save stuff to the cloud and I don't do gaming much. Pretty much surfing the web, spread sheets, documents (i.e. Word) and watching videos. Just basic stuff. there seems to be some well priced basic stuff out there. Might stop by Best Buy later today and take a look.

On the car side the Chicago Auto Show is next month, planning on going (haven't in several years).

SW, do it quickly. I had the same type of thing that happen to my 5-yr. old iMac. The computer was making crackling noises and was very slow. Often I couldn't get on websites, and it would time-out. Then it happened,,,the hard drive died, It would have been expensive to remedy, so I got a new one, and fortunately had all my important information saved on the cloud. Now I have the dilemma of destroying the hard drive so my personal info. cannot be extracted when the computer is recycled. If only I erased the sensitive data before the computer went down, as now it will not even boot up, and I have to figure out the best way to do this.

I just keep nothing important on my laptop. Other than my iTunes phone back up, but can always do that again.

I have a pile of hard drives in the garage. I just pop them out before recycling computers. Someday will smash them with a sledge or something.
