I am home now btw....flew back this afternoon. 2 1/2 days by car, 21/2 hours by plane. I am supposed to pick up the new E400 tomorrow....I'll let you know how it goes.
How does it feel to be out of the warm Florida weather? Not so good, huh !
My snowbird next door neighbor has been home for 3 days already and he drives.
Better call before you run in to get the E400 that may still need some work.

It was about 60F when we got home, but it was about 80F when we left Tampa. Just took Gigi for her 9 pm walk and it was pretty cold...a really short walk tonight, I am not used to this cold (about 35F tonight)
In Florida you can see way more stars at night....I like that clean air. I forgot about stars, we live in such a congested industrial area.
I will walk into the dealership at 12:30 and I am sure they will be all ready, I will be totally surprised if they aren't. I haven't seen too many 2017 E's....I forget what they look like.
When I drove a for a living, it was interesting to watch the traffic going tru and fro on I-75, as I hauled my loads. I had no idea at that time how many people migrated on that highway, or why. Now I do, and am quite happy to be on the other end of the country.
Aside from my classic car shopping yesterday,, I was also helping my brother's fiance find a vehicle. She was being terribly picky for someone on a tight budget. Yeah, OK, an Aveo hatchback ain't the greatest thing on the road, but a 32k-mile example for $4995 I thought warranted at least a look. Nope, she wasn't havin it.
I am amazed at how much garbage is out there, though, and how little $6k buys these days. I lost count of how many vehicles we looked at where I ran the VIN and found a branded title. One Subaru Legacy was visibly drowned somewhere along the line. Anyway, really long story short, I stumbled upon an '04 Grand Cherokee with 113k miles that looked remarkably clean so I talked her into giving it a closer look. It drove as good as it looked. This was a straight 6 model, which I prefer of course. Made a fairly quick deal with him at $6200 OTD with a 6-mo powertrain warranty. Its roughly a $2750 auction vehicle, so I was effectively offering about $5k for it and settled at around $5200. He does have to take it tomorrow to address an oil leak I pointed out before the deal is finalized, though.

Q, that is a big reason I assume I end up going new again (or leasing). I will lose my mind quickly trying to find a worthwhile cheap car, and If it isn't going to be cheap, I might as well lease another one since I won't have a ton of cash to put down.
I guess if I decide to buy anyway, a pretty new CPO type would work (like Bradd's Q40), but really that is spending real money, no different than buying a new one pretty much.
could be interesting, but I doubt I would go through what you have looking for the last couple of used purchases.
I had a rough day yesterday. My sister called me at work around 8:00 am to tell me that my brother in law didn't wake up yesterday AM. He was 40. They have 2 girls, ages 5 & 7. It is completely devastating
Very sorry to hear. Thinking about your family.

CL has always been a bargain bin and you have to check things out carefully. I've developed a few tricks to weed out the obvious scams like looking at the background of photos to see if there are palm trees for a local car or if the listed phone number appears in multiple ads. CarFaxs, independent mechanic inspection, and sizing up the owner also help.
Bottom line: nobody ever sold a used car because it was running TOO good.
Well done summary of used car buying OF but some used cars are pretty good. The 2013 Passat we traded in was perfect in every way, if you didn't mind the lack of power and stability on the highway.
If you are going to spend $10000 or more on a used car I would rather pay the 10 to 20% more and buy it from a respected dealer. There are a million things that could be wrong with a used car, from being in a flood to be totally rebuilt.
I have seen people on the judge shows...they buy a car for $3000, it has 200000 miles on it, and they wonder why it stopped running.
You see that's the crux of the matter. YOU knew what a creampuff your car was but the next guy doesn't. The dealer making it a CPO gives some assurance but you as a buyer never really know.
I wonder if someday you will be able to download all the data from the car which will tell you if it was raced, abused or not maintained? They already do that to rate you for insurance with a little gizmo you plug into the car's computer.
I can see a day where you don't ask for a road test but for a download.

Twelve luxury cars impounded in stunt driving incident north of Toronto
BY KEVIN CONNOR, TORONTO SUN FIRST POSTED: SUNDAY, APRIL 02, 2017 08:19 PM EDT | UPDATED: SUNDAY, APRIL 02, 2017 10:38 PM EDT stunt driving Twelve luxury cars have been impounded and their drivers charged with stunt driving after police say they put on a dangerous display on Ontario’s Highway 400 on Sunday. )
A dozen high-end vehicles driven by slow-witted drivers have been busted for stunt driving in Barrie on Sunday afternoon.
The vehicles were nabbed by the OPP on Hwy. 400 in Barrie by the ONroute service centre.
“We have about 12 impounded for driving aggressively and stunt driving and maybe more,” said Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.
“We are talking Lamborghinis, Porsches and Ferraris. All sorts.

The problem with a $5000 Aveo with 32k miles is....what is it's average life expectancy? Made with cheap parts that will fall apart quickly, and it will be constantly needing repairs.
$5200 for a 2004 Cherokee with 113k is probably a better buy. A lot tougher, should hold up better. I wonder about life expectancy and it is at a stage where some major parts may need replacing.
I know it is hard for some people to think CPO or new....I have been there myself, but IMHO, I would use the $5000 to lease a Corolla or something for 3 years, top it up as more money comes in (forced savings), then buy the car after 3 years when the price will be about half. It may be the only car you need for 10 or 12 years - will probably cost less in the long run.
driver.....add to their driving woes, none of them are all that bright. Who paints a car like that metallic pink? UGLY! A red Porsche, with idiotic racing stickers?
Again, these folks are about as sharp as a marble.

A download to obtain information about a used car! There won't be too many used cars being bought.
It's like that saying I have been rich and I have been poor, I like being rich better (Sophie Tucker and David Lee Roth).
I have bought used cars and I have bought new cars........buying new is better.
Also, if you buy CPO or new I think it will probably cost less to own over time too.
Put the top down and spent the day in the Cobra yesterday. I hadn't cranked it in several weeks. So, it took a few to fire up, but after that, hit the ignition and within 1 second, it was burbling.
Not sure if I could have as much fun doing anything else while wearing pants. I did notice that the plastic trim around the radio and HVAC controls was loose on the left side. Tried to get it to "clip" back in, but the fastener was broke. Have to order a new piece. Probably get an oil change (with 2K miles on the last oil change) here in the next few weeks.

GG a real case of more money than brains! And, this was on a major 6 lane highway with lots of traffic, and they were zig zagging and tailgating as well as speeding.
I wonder how they made their money to buy these cars......my guess, wealthy parents or illegal activities, doubt if any are surgeons or high priced lawyers.
Another option instead of leasing is just get something new or close (CPO), but take silly long financing, and pay it off early. That way you own but get the up front cash flow benefits of leasing.
Will largely depend on my usage needs at the time. I can still go with my sneaky plan to buy something modest that my daughter will take over when she graduates. Just have to figure out logistics on that.
I have had some excellent used cars, but, I have also had some bad ones. I am not a gambler, so I prefer new or at least CPO. I also don't have the patience to take a car to the garage and then wait around while they diagnose it, then get a big unexpected bill to fix it, and then hope that will be the last one for a long time....but, it seldom is.

I've had pretty good luck buying used. I prefer buying them from a dealer's used lot. They tend to be in better shape. It's a more straightforward purchase. There's negotiating but the wiggle room is smaller and the amounts are smaller so it's less anxiety-making overall. I always had them checked out and bought vehicles with good reliability ratings: Buick, Toyota, Honda. There are the usual repairs you expect with an older car. I have been buying new for awhile now because 1) I can afford to and 2) I want the latest technology.
Was released from the hospital on Friday and got home Friday early evening. Was too weak to really post over the weekend, but today is the first day I feel strong enough to try and catch up on the posts. According to the doctors, the pain I was experiencing was probably from the fluid build-up from the surgery which still has not been absorbed by the body as the surgeon stated to me. So, I guess it's either live with the pain or take pain meds, which I do not want to do - can't drive when I'm on those darn things.
Today, I just was able to run to the bank and then came straight home. Tomorrow, I will try to venture out a bit more - maybe to the mall for some walking - depends upon how I feel.
Thanks all for your well-wishes, much appreciated!
Bradd, I am so very, very sorry to hear about your BIL's death. How awful and so very young. My sincerest condolences to you and your entire family for this terrible loss. Life is so "fleeting" - we must learn to live our lives as best we can knowing how delicate life is. Again, I am so very, very sorry, Bradd!
GG, did I miss a post where you informed this board of the decision of the arbitration hearing? Was hoping to hear something, but I found no posts about the subject. I could have missed it since I've been out of the loop for a week.
Mike, I just went online and saw some of your posts about a GI issue. I couldn't find the original post so don't know what it was about. My son had undiagnosed recurring appendicitis for 5 years from 14 years old to 19. He would get attacks ever couple months, and they would go away in 24 hours. My wife pushed for an MRI at the ER, and the ER doctor said my son was in appendicitis demographic and it appeared to be appendicitis but normally it either bursts or gets removed. He suggested removing it, and that solved the issue. Anyways, wishes for full recovery.
Thanks for the well-wishes, Lawcar. I had my appendix taken out in 1985 and my gallbladder in 2009. Not much left inside me.
As I posted earlier, it is due to post-op fluids from my liver resection in September of last year.
I just got a letter from my health insurance carrier that Broward Health Hospital - the hospital that I was at for my liver-resection due to cancer - is no longer an "in-network" hospital - from what I have heard, they did not renew their contract with Broward Health. So I am in a pinch now - there are no other hospitals in my immediate area that have a transplant team. So, I guess my doctor will have to get an exception if I ever need surgery again.
It is truly amazing how these health insurance companies operate.

$5k for a 32k mile Aveo isn't bad. CarMax has a lot like that and they want closer to $10k. I know you have access to auction data, why not just go to the auction?

ten years or so back I was talking to Jim (the guy from the Volvo forum that was a dealer) about having him get a car from the auction (really low markup, only about $500-1,000 over auction price) and went to his house. He had the auction feed up and running. Could watch about 8 lanes running at one time, and he could bid right online as the cars went through. It was truly addictive, and potentially really expensive!

Hopefully they'll resolve their dispute. In the meantime I'd go through the steps to get listed at the next nearest transplant team hospital where your insurance does pay. You can be listed at more than one place. Yes, health care coverage is pretty much up to the consumer to wade through all the rigmarole. Just when you are not at your best too.
Mike - are you under Medicare with your insurance as secondary? I'm not sure, but if the hospital takes Medicare your secondary insurance that covers co-pays and deductibles may still have to cover you. You'll want to look into all this and what Suydam said too because out of network means you get raped financially. Your doctor's office may be able to help you sort through it all.

I'm working on it. Just spoke with gastroenterologist who is trying to get me approved for this new Hep C drug. I should hear something shortly from the foundation that pays my copays ($6500 every 4 weeks) - supposed to be on this pill 24 weeks. It's the blood tests that get to me - 24 vials every 4 weeks. Not much fun.

Thanks, Mike. Stick...thank you, too. You were much more concise and succinct. Neither of which I'm good at.
So, this is a good segue into a phone call I recived about an hour ago from Cadillac. File this in the "I really can't make this stuff up" dept.
A lady from Cadillac's Resolution Dept called and said my case was forwarded to her desk. She wanted to arrange the "new Cadillac" I was having delivered. HUH? I explained to her the decision from the arbitraitor that stated I was due a refund in full. And, that I had the BBB Arbitraitor's Decision I could send to her if she hasn't seen it.
She responded she only handled swap outs, not repurchases. And, that she'd have to forward my case to someone else, which will set the repurchase clock (and the check to be sent) back to 30-days from today.
Can Cadillac possibly be any more inept? They can't fix their cars correctly. They can't get parts to fix their cars in a timely manner. They act like they shouldn't be held accountable. When they are held accountable, they go to great legnths to act like Inspector Clouseau!
I would contact that arbiter. I don't see how their mistake can reset the clock. If that is the case, they could keep kicking it around their office until you die.

No, berri, I am under a Medicare Advantage Plan - an HMO. So I must stay in their approved lists of doctors, hospitals and pharmacies. The closest transplant team in network is at Jackson Memorial Hospital in South Miami - about 60 miles away. Hopefully they will resolve the issues prior to my ever needing their services.

Good point. This could be a sore losers ploy.

A buddy and me are planning on sneaking into the local auction with the help of another friend who works for a dealer. If we get in we can't bid but it'll be fun to watch.

I guess if I decide to buy anyway, a pretty new CPO type would work (like Bradd's Q40), but really that is spending real money, no different than buying a new one pretty much.
could be interesting, but I doubt I would go through what you have looking for the last couple of used purchases.

I wonder if someday you will be able to download all the data from the car which will tell you if it was raced, abused or not maintained? They already do that to rate you for insurance with a little gizmo you plug into the car's computer.
I can see a day where you don't ask for a road test but for a download.

Twelve luxury cars impounded in stunt driving incident north of Toronto

stunt driving
Twelve luxury cars have been impounded and their drivers charged with stunt driving after police say they put on a dangerous display on Ontario’s Highway 400 on Sunday.
All sorts.

Again, these folks are about as sharp as a marble.
It's like that saying I have been rich and I have been poor, I like being rich better (Sophie Tucker and David Lee Roth).
I have bought used cars and I have bought new cars........buying new is better.
Also, if you buy CPO or new I think it will probably cost less to own over time too.

Then, it'll be ready for Spring/Summer/Fall.
I wonder how they made their money to buy these cars......my guess, wealthy parents or illegal activities, doubt if any are surgeons or high priced lawyers.

Will largely depend on my usage needs at the time. I can still go with my sneaky plan to buy something modest that my daughter will take over when she graduates. Just have to figure out logistics on that.
