There is a possibility that the trunk receptor is overly sensitive and is being activated by other folk's remotes as they open or lock their cars.

Good grief - not even the 80-90 year old crowd of old geezers wear plaid slacks or shorts with white shoes and black socks.  My Dad did, but not as popular as it was back in the 70's-90's.

As for inadvertent trunk openings, I searched the internet and there are many reports of this happening on all kinds of cars with power trunk lids.  A couple of reports indicated that it was the car's software and in other cases it was an overly sensitive key fob.  Many temporary fixes was what I did - flip the valet lock in the glove box to lock the trunk so I cannot be opened.  I can sleep better the next couple of nights knowing the trunk won't open and allow rain in.

All this technology has its problems, that's for sure.

Ford advertises the trunk-opening leg-wave as though it's the greatest automotive advancement since the push button electric starter did away with the hand crank. I mean who could tolerate a car that didn't have it. :'(

I'll settle for a car whose trunk doesn't open by itself - I'd be happy to give up my leg moves!!! B)

I demonstrate it all the time, so I don't find using the hands-free trunk opening to be a big deal; line your leg up with the BMW emblem and make ONE kicking motion. Simple.

Never had an issue with the hands free trunk on my car. It's not a necessary thing, but it is fun to show off and can be convenient.

Good point.  Don't see much snow here.  I wouldn't buy a house in any place we might retire until we see if we like it.  Wish I had the guts to get an Airstream and hit the road.

I find the soft touch pad release next to the backup camera to be very convenient to open the trunk on the ATS.

@abacomike -- Can't you unlock your car doors (and thus the trunk) by just pressing a button on one of the doors? You usually don't have to use the key fob -- it just has to be near you.

A childhood friend is doing that. She retired a year or so ago, and is selling her house in Santa Barbara (asking $965K for a 1400 sf house!). Her and her husband bought an RV last year, and I think she's gonna tour the country.

I remember a guy at work who owned a 3 series that would open all the windows and sunroof during snow storms. Dealer blamed pocket dialing but he said it happened while he was asleep.

I still think those Passat's look like a 95 Caprice.
Last night I went to make a glass of ice water and no ice or water came out of the fridge door.
There was a warning light that the door wasn't closed, but it was.
I flipped the breaker and everything is back to normal.

All the talk about remotes reminds me that diagnosing whether it's the remote or the body control module causing the problem requires bringing all the remotes and putting them where they're inside a metal container, like an oven so the radio signals can't get to the car. Then if no strange occurances happen like the trunk opening, it indicates the remotes may be the problem.

I recall our garage door going up at odd times. Turned out it was the remote for it making internal contact because the temperature or something changed and sent the signal. Verified by removing batteries from both remotes. We were even checking into the radio signals from airplanes operating out of an airport a few miles away.

Or the opposite problem can occur. One of my former coworkers built a house on a hill about 1/3 of a mile away from the main TV transmitter tower for the city. On certain vehicles none of the remote locking key fob functions would work in his driveway but were fine when elsewhere.

One thing about Arizona's heat, you don't have to shovel it.

Pinhead, you should consider migrating up to Canada during the summer like the Canadian goose does ;).....best of both worlds.

I spend much of the summer and a fair part of the rest of the year up here in our cabin in Forest Lakes, AZ, at 7500 ft. elevation. It's about 30 degrees cooler, plus which it's less than a 2 hour drive from the house in Mesa, mostly on a 4-lane divided highway.

And a Happy Easter right back at you and to the others on here.

You're worried about deer flies for a few months when you have to contend with alligators, Pythons and Rattlesnakes for the rest of the year.

I find the northern California climate almost perfect. No snow (although you can get it if you want it pretty easily), rainy season is moderate, Nov-mid April, then nothing, temps 75-90 in summer, low humidity, no bugs, clean air, 12 month growing season for the garden.

So it looks like my Euro Deliver plans are getting more precise. Starting in Munich, middle of June, I'll probably go to Vienna, then swing through Alps of Austria, Switzerland and France, ending in Paris, flying back early July. 2 weeks available, so plenty available to see. Any ideas for places, especially what are best sites in Switzerland?

I'll take my mom, she's still mourning my dad's passing in October. She's generally a strong person, she is the one running our "family business", staying on top of issues, learning new things, like internet, paying bills on line, etc. Those are not small things for people her age. She admitted to me neglecting herself to the point of losing strength through poor nutrition (she stopped cooking, except when my nephew is to come around on weekend) and lack of activity. My sister is watching over her, but it's always been the other way around, so I don't know how good my sister is in that. I think my mom will get out of it eventually, but worry a little about the lost strength. So I thought I could give her a small boost by doing something that requires some effort and focus. Something to look forward to, make plans, point of focus foe a time.

There are some logistics to figure out - she lives in Poland, doesn't speak foreign languages, so I'll need to synchronize our time of travel, so all she needs to do on her own, is check in at Polish regional airport and transfer to a correct flight at a bigger hub. I pick her up and drop her off. She is quite wolrdly, as she traveled with my dad many places, including China, Africa, Mexico, US, on organized escorted tours, or with me. Good news is, airports don't intimidate her, she knows general rules of air travel and airport transfers. Anyway, it may not be perfect trip for me, but I think can take 2 weeks of her and it should be worth it. So it won't be a big deal, as long as I'm at one end and my nephew at the other of the flight trips.

About an hour ago, my cable TV and Internet Service went out.  According to Comcast, it won't be restored until late tonight.  I was right in the middle of watching the playoffs.

Normally, I'd get in my car and drive to the shopping mall - but everything is closed today.  I am SOOL, to borrow a phrase.

By the way, Happy Easter to all my Christian friends and Happy Passover to all my Jewish friends.

Sorry about your dad. Too bad about mom too but I bet a visit from you will raise her spirits.

My wife's grandmother was Polish and even though she have lived in this country for decades never learned English. The family tales whispered of multiple husbands in the old country and daring escapes to what was then Austo-Hungry. Because of this my BIL always claimed that he was decended from Arch Duke Ferdinand.

She was close to 100 (no one knew for sure) when she passed about 30 years ago. They make em' tough in Poland.

@dino001 , sorry to hear about your father. Hope your mom pulls out of it soon.

Going through a similar thing closer to home. My B-I-L passed away last week after a battle with cancer. I gather it wasn't pretty at the end. I was speaking to my sister (his wife) today and am worried for her. They were very devoted to each other, a remarkable relationship, and she is alone for the first time in 50 years. She is having a very hard time, understandably so. Fortunately she has a large circle of friends so she doesn't need to rely solely on family for moral support. It has been a down week.

Best thing you can hear from the ophthalmologist as e's putting the new lens in, "Perfect." And so it was. Had a clear patch over the eye the first day. The next day I'm ok'd to drive and just wear the patch when asleep so I don't do something to the eye while sleeping. That was maybe two days.

There seems to be a question of whether or not to do the eye with only the peripheral vision. At first he thought yes, then he was kind of what's the point because the peripheral is mostly to detect motion. I can tell you I don't notice it. On the other hand that one would be free because it doesn't need the toric lens. Basically if he says eventually have to be done I'll say do it - but make sure I can swim by July. Otherwise wait until September.

I a;ready see better than I did with the glasses and it improves every day. Maybe I can end up with x-ray vision.

Wife and I took Sam up to Blaine today for his Global Entry interview. It was about 110 miles north of where we live, about 1 hr 45 each way with no traffic.

Whole thing took about 36 seconds once we were there.

Some metrics for the drive in the X1
    220 miles round trip
    Average 36 mpg
    Average Speed 77 mph

Was a phenomenal drive in the X1 - our first longer drive with it. No complaints from the peanut gallery as both my wife and Sam slept both ways.

You sound like you have thought everything out, it should work out great.

This has been a tough few weeks for this group. Sorry for your loss as well.

Carnaught Pinhead, you should consider migrating up to Canada during the summer like the Canadian goose does

Hope you aren't referring to me! :@

Dino, Your trip to Europe to pick up the new BMW sounds like a trip of a lifetime for a car lover. Condolences to your Mom, it is unimaginable to think of losing your partner after so many years.

I don't know if it is too sad at this time but I was impressed with the dying lion sculpture. I don't like to see sad things but this one really left an impression....it is so lifelike.

Lucerne: Dying Lion of Lucerne Monument: Incredible story behind this unique and moving sculpture. Carved right into the rock to honor about 500 to 600 Swiss soldiers killed in 1700s. Lion looks so real, and so sad.
The story we were told by our guide was the sculptor wasn't paid his full fee, so the lion resembles a pig if you do an overlay of a pig.
    Very somber and moving....
Advise knowing the story or arrange a guide to show. I don't like to see sad things but this was very worthwhile.

I a;ready see better than I did with the glasses and it improves every day. Maybe I can end up with x-ray vision.

Glad to hear the results were good. Isn't it great how the new lens improves the color and image.

I told my ENT guy last week, who was getting ready to put a tube in my left eardrum, that it would be nice if they could do for ears what the lenses do for vision: just replace parts and us older guys who have lost part of upper range hearing can hear almost like a teenager again.

Going nuts without TV or internet.  How did people manage without these things.  Come to think of it, when I was a kid, we had a TV that had a 8 or 9 inch screen and 2 or 3 channels.  Hardly ever watched TV because there wasn't anything on that interested me.  I usually played with my Lionel trains - laying out track and building a town or I read a book or comics.  I was a member of several clubs which also kept me busy.

But it was all that homework that took up most of my evenings.  But I've become so dependent on HDTV that sitting at home alone here gets pretty depressing.  Wish I had a good book to read.   :'(

I was always partial to the looks of the older Acura TL-S type. Seems like a pretty good car for it's day too. I know some of you have owned TLs. What's your impression of this one?

I don't think that's a type S. It doesn't have the trunk badging?? His ad copy is a cut and paste from a magazine review.
Needs further investigation. Not a huge difference in price but at least $1K.
