Yeah, the unwanted quotes or posts never really go away once you start typing a response, even if you delete what you typed. That's why you sometimes see posts with a single "." or a "deleted" and nothing else.

Big time scam and I can't understand their motive or what they are trying to accomplish? Do they try to get people to send them money?

The cars are always perfect in appearance and seem to be staged. This one is beyond dump since we have ZERO palm trees in Western Washington! I always flag ads like this!

And....I'll pass on the Chevy Van. You'll get no Finder's Fee!

Just be glad I'm not on your side of the country as I would jump on a 2004 ANYTHING with 40k miles for $3200.

Since you are a former car professional how about sharing your techniques for judging a low cost used car. Do you bring your paint meter, buy a CarFax or just stare into the seller's eyes for hidden clues?

I like to assess the seller as well as the car but when money is involved you can't even trust your own grandma. I wish I had better mechanical assessment skills so I wouldn't have to trust my instincts.
I try to size up the seller and I think I'm pretty good at this. I've never seen a paint meter used but I'm also pretty good (I think) at being able to determine if a car has been wrecked or not. Car Faxes aren't always accurate and when they say ACCIDENT REPORTED it may have been something so minor that any quality body shop could have easily restored the car to new. The Avalon I just sold would probably list two accidents which, I suppose would have scared some people away from a wonderful car. The gal who had it once backed into a post and another time she hit a mailbox which damaged the hood and front bumper. These two incidents were properly repaired and even a professional would have had trouble seeing any paintwork. I listen to the seller. If they cheap out on maintenance I'll know it. If they tell me the A/C "just needs a charge" or the check engine light that is glowing is " probably a loose wire somewhere" I know better. A lot of car flippers and curbstoners out there selling junk/ I'm pretty good at asking the right questions on the phone. Still, I'm pretty careful!

Well, the 2004 Avalon is gone. A very nice woman we know wanted it badly and after two years I finally sold it to her for nearly what I had in it. She's very happy and that's important.

So, in the hunt for another "third" car. It seems we always have had one and although it's unnecessary I just feel better knowing we have a backup. Since we have a new CRV and a new Civic in the garage, it'll sit outside.

So, I'm thinking something practical that I can haul stuff in and use on those rare days when we get snow.

An SUV! Thinking a Ford Explorer maybe or perhaps a Jeep Grand Cherokee. An old one in the 5000.00 range.

    Any thoughts?

I'd say a nice 2 or 3 year old Honda Fit. Probably hold more that most cuvs, dependable, holds value, fun to drive.
I don't want to spend that much money since it'll be a third car that MIGHT get 5000 miles a year put on it.

Craig, I have primary cars that barely get 5,000 miles a year!

I hear you on the CL sellers. You get a sense for listening to what they are saying. Basically, I want to buy a car from me, so I look at listings from that filter (how I would do it). Sadly, my type of car (and me) seem to be a dying breed on CL now. One reason I have little desire to get a used car to tide my over. at some point I have to sell it. Plus, the searching can be disheartening (unless I can subcontract the entire process out to Qbrozen!)

    Maybe I can help.

What I have noticed is that once you click on the "quote" button and you change your mind about posting a comment, even though you delete what is in the "response box" it doesn't disappear like you have mentioned but once you decide to reply to another post, after deleting what keeps appearing in the box, the old stuff disappears and only the new stuff shows up.

At least that's the way it works for me.

Then again, maybe it's your hooptie subscription to this site. :o

Can you use your influence with the hosts to get me an upgrade for cheap? I can't afford the premium price like you. :o

Oldfarmer, I was thinking about how we were all duped by the nice little old lady who sold you the Chevy Van. What little old lady is going to actually go out....and buy, a Chevy van. They are uncomfortable and hard enough to drive for even the hardiest of men. They are like driving a sardine can on wheels, with minimal suspension system, and minimal feel of the road. She was probably selling it for a family member who would never be able to sell someone anything. Maybe the van was used to run drugs in the Catskills!

Note: the quotations and comments system has run amuck around here......I am in the quote part and oldfarmers quote has disappeared.

Glad to see I'm not the only one having problems.

As to the van scam, the little old lady was a fellow farmer at the market. The van really isn't that bad. My problem was that she said it needed nothing and had no leaks. I trusted her and found out she was either totally ignorant of her vehicle or was less than honest about the condition.

Still it serves it's purpose and runs and drives much better than my previous junker van. It actually rides fairly smoothly, has nice power for a 6 and even handles ok. It's an $1800 van so it's not a disaster of a deal.

Missed out on that Ventura as I figured I would! I was goin to meet the daughter of the seller at noon today but she just called and said her mom had sold it to a family member. Not surprised.

I KNEW that if a family member or neighbor got wind of it that it would get snapped up and that's exactly what happened. Oh well....

I can honestly say that whoever got one of my cars got a damn good used car. That even applies to the guy that bought Mrs. j's '05 XG 350 that had a new engine put in it and was the cream puff of the dealers lot with only 43K miles on it in November of 2011.

Son #2 said it best when I traded Mrs. j's '06 loaded Sonata LX, V6 that just turned 13K miles on the way to the dealer near Akron when I bought my '09 Genny. He said, "boy, you sure have changed since we grew up in your house. I remember the day when you'd be looking high and low for a used car like that. Now you just get rid of them".

I reminded him that when he and his brother were growing up I was more concerned with feeding them, clothing them and trying to save enough to help them with their future education. I also said, "when you get to where I am today you'll probably think differently too".

It's all about life's priorities but I have to admit it's more fun these days.

Try to get in a little pickle ball while you are there. If they changed the name of that game to something like sport ball, they would probably attract more players. Who wants to brag that they play a mean game of pickle ball.

I've sold cars to friends before and I always make VERY sure that even the slightest potential problem is disclosed. I also tell them that when/if something breaks I don't want to hear about it. I honestly almost try to discourage them. so far, no problem. People who don't understand cars just might have a niggling feeling that just maybe I hid something from them. Now, if I buy Shifty's Mini and something breaks (no doubt quickly) I would have zero thoughts that just maybe he knew. After all of these years I trust him.

I sold another car today- a M240i. Easy deal, they used the USAA car buying service with no trade. I was the only guy on the new car side who moved anything today. I took another 3 ups- all older couples. Two are looking at a 5 Series and one is looking at a 4 Series convertible. The new car manager said she'd really like me to start selling cars full time; I'm still not sure about that.

I have my cargo pants for trips to Europe, lots of pickpockets there. I put an empty decoy wallet in back pocket to see if they can get it.
They call it pickle ball because that was the dogs name that chased the ball when they made the game. Maybe Bicks or some pickle company should sponsor a tournament.

THIS is what I have happening now. This quote reappeared in the posting box long after I had responded to it. I deleted it and it's back again hours later. Weird.

This may have been answered already but to delete anything that gets into the quote box for more than a few seconds you have to go to the info box on the right side of the page and choose the "Draft" option. Then you'll see a list of quote boxes and when you hover over the top line an "x" appears at the right side. Click on that "x" to delete the quote that has been saved as a draft. Each topic can have a draft saved, so there may be more than one.

RB....I thought it would only be a matter of time before they wanted you to be selling full time. Only downside (and I'm probably showing my own ignorance), I heard the morning sales meetings in a new car dealership can be brutal. Road trip update

Well, the new Ram is a great highway vehicle. Plenty of room, smooth quiet ride and with the Hemi it can get up and go!

The newly freed Elwha river was amazing too! The old dam sites were amazing, as is how quickly nature is reclaiming the former lake beds. This picture is an image of the old lake with the actual river in view for comparison, though this photo doesn't do justice to how spectacular it really is

Good story about the dog, but it is not true. Joel Prichard started the game and his wife Joan was a competitive rower or some such. While watching her husband play one day she commented that the game reminded her of the boat that came in last in a race. That boat was called "The Pickle Boat". The name stuck. The dog came along a few years later and he was actually named after the game.

Being named after the dog is a much better story and I wish it was true !

I think most of those Gazelles were VW or Pinto-engined.

There are a lot of those replicas around and looks like they are priced around $10-$11,000. The last original Gazelle that was sold went for $7,000,000., so go for it. You might get lucky.

No thanks. One can still find cool old cars for 7K, a malaise era kit car doesn't appeal to me :)

When I was a little kid, I did have a thing for the "Shay" Model A replicas, which were also Pinto-based. That was back when Model A prices were high and there was enough demand for a replica. Today, a real Model A might not be much more expensive than a nice Shay.

Thanks for good wishes.....and good point remembering fathers day, all the best for all you fathers and for those who have fathers.
Lots of Germany cars here in Berlin......ha ha.
They drive at full speed on very narrow streets. I would be scared if I was in N.A. but here the drivers have lots of skill. Taxis are mostly Toyota Primus and Mercedes

Hotel is incredible, Steigenberger, ultra modern with clean simple rooms. Hope to do Hop On Hop Off.

Car dealers can treat salespeople badly. Jimmy Pattison is a multi billionaire, owns lots of dealerships in Canada. He was known to fire the salesman with the lowest sales each month. Rd Runner need not worry, they need him more than he needs them....and he can say good by anytime.

I think I forgot to wish you a safe and happy trip due to circumstances yesterday afternoon. So my apologies.

The circumstances were getting ready to leave quickly for my granddaughter's dance recital. You wanna talk about brutal,

Some advice for your trip. Do everything I wouldn't do, you'll have more fun that way.

Noted, thanks. Grandaughts dance recital....my sympathies go out to you. Last bad one for me was granddaughters high school graduatin, must have taken 4 hours. About half way thru they announced for the first time it was being shown on the Internet at the same time.
I asked the parents ......Why Didn't You Tell Me THAT?

Advice....you mean I should go to Dennys?

Suydam was here last week......If we timed this better we could have all met here.
I am told the chocolate factory is worth seeing in Hamburg.

How come you know so much about pickleball? Are you playing.....did you become addicted?
I heard both stories though I don't think either one has been proven, people seem to like the dog one more. Why else would they call it pickleball.

I have got at least 6 people started playing, and they love it. One guy who is a good tennis player made fun of me for playing.....now, he says he likes it more than tennis.

The kids are assembling it? That is the real gift. Those things have about 10000 parts!
And, they got you a Weber! Either they really like you or they are hoping for some really good dinners.

Yes, you are right about the dog story being better.

Maybe the doggy story became popular because once you are washed up playing tennis due to your game going to the dogs, you take up Pickle Ball. After that you take up rowing for old coots.

The more I think about it the more I think I'm right about the career path of a washed up wannabe ex-tennis bum. :(

Most people just get the grills pre-assembled these days it seems. Much easier!

For your sake I hope it's not one of those Weber Genny models.

If it is, you'll never get any credit for a perfectly grilled steak once that info gets out. Your only hope would be to get rid of the badge. :'(
