Hello Michaell, thanks for catching those mistakes!

That invoice price was what came up when I used the TMV tool and plugged in all the options i wanted. $37,075 was listed as the base invoice without options and with the luxury, premium, and anti-theft alarm factored in at invoice it came out to the 41K figure. The actual TMV came out to 43k. Do you think the pricing data that Edmunds is using is off?

    No, I don't.

It seems you might be confusing invoice and MSRP.

    Michaell,

I mentionrd earlier I had to put down $1,000 to order the car I requested and signed a build sheet. I asked this forum if they could keep this or are they required to return it? The response was "Depends on whether you've signed anything stipulating that the deposit is refundable or not." Further "An honorable dealer would return the money if a deal hasn't been struck."

Nothing was stipulated on any document I signed saying the deposit was non-refundable. What do you mean by "if a deal hasn't been struck"? I have not signed a lease or purchase contract at this stage except put $1000 down on the inital build.

As you know my main issue was the high MF rate .00169 they say they are sticking with and can't reduce because of the USAA discounts I am getting and does not allow them much room in the deal for "renegotiating". I say until the offcial contract is signed then there is no offical deal...

    Agree?

Also based upon this forums great feedback, everyone says...walk. I agree and I walked. They are still holding steady on the deposit though bease the reason they take non refundable deposits is becasue they spdcifically ordered the car versus what was on the lot.

So is my request to build and deposit considerd the "deal"?

    Thank you.

    Thank you.

First, let me say that I'm not a lawyer nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

So, I'll stick with the "it depends" answer. Was your car ordered with some odd combination of options and colors that would make it difficult to sell to anyone else? If so, the dealer may be less likely to return your deposit and force you to take the car.

Second, the dealer has two ways to make money on a lease transaction ... not discount the selling price as much and/or inflate the MF. As you state you got a great selling price based on the USAA coupons, the dealer may be less likely to reduce the MF in order for them to make something on the deal.

Is it the world's worst lease deal? I doubt it. But, it's up to you to decide whether you can live with the terms.

The joy of driving the car will be with you every time you get behind the wheel. The financial particulars will fade away with time.

435i 10k/36mo Lease Special on BMW website for $51,550 MSRP puts a payment at $509/mo. I built an equivalently equipped 435i and "estimated" the payments and they were closer to $562/mo. My own formula puts it in the $570/mo range.

    What am I missing?
Where is this money being shifted to?

Also, whatever is being done to the numbers to reduce this monthly payment, will it have a negative impact on my extra down payments? I wanted to toss a few grand at it up front to get the payment under $450/mo.

    Thanks in advance!

I don't have the ad, but I'm sure it assumes a downpayment, and might not divulge the dealer discount that is assumed to get that payment.

This is what it says in the ad, which is right on BMWUSA's website.

    • $750 Innovations Credit included in payment.
    • $509 First months payment
    • $3,000 Down payment
    • $0 Security Deposit
    • $725 Acquisition fee
    • $4,234 Cash due at signing

But like I said using that 3000 down in their calculator and mine, there is still ~$50/mo missing from the payment. I would love to know where that's going.

$3000 works out to about $85/mo on a 36 month lease.

Still doesn't provide the actual selling price, which we'd need to model the payment.

The estimated MSRP in the ad was $51,550.00 with a residual value of $32,477.00 at lease end. (Which is 63%)

I didn't see this the first time I read it...

"Tax, title, license, registration and dealer fees are additional fees due at signing. Payments do not include applicable taxes."

Could adding those costs get that $509 closer to their calculators $570 figure?

Most of those costs - title, license, registration, dealer fees - are usually paid at lease inception. They can be rolled into the lease but the standard deal assumes that they aren't.

Taxes are handled at the state level - what state is this?

We still need the selling price to figure out the payment. Knowing the MSRP is only half the battle.

I haven't started negotiating on the price yet, but the vehicle I'm looking at locally is stickered at $50,992. Not sure how much lower they will go, I guess assume that's the selling price.

Does BMW offer a 7,000mi/yr lease? This is a secondary vehicle that might not even see 3,000mi/yr.

I've not seen any BMW leases for less than 10K miles, but a 7,500 mile lease would have a residual value 1% higher than that for 10K.

Oh ok, fair enough. 10K is fine. What do you make of their advertised lease deal? Do their numbers seem fishy or is their online lease estimator off?

    • MSRP: $51550
    • Sale Price: $50992
    • Residual: $32477
    • 36 months / 10K miles

    • $509 First months payment
    • $3,000 Down payment
    • $0 Security Deposit
    • $725 Acquisition fee
    • $4,234 Cash due at signing

They're saying that is $509 a month, their website says it's $572 with the same down payment and vehicle price.

Thanks for your help and expedient responses.

    Hmmm. If I use $51,550 as the MSRP, $47,992 as the cap cost ($50,992 - $3000 down), .00129 MF and 63% residual, I get a pre-tax payment of $534.79/mo for 36 months.

A couple of points - first, you should be able to negotiate more than $500-600 off sticker. Not sure how much more, but that seems to be a paltry discount.

Second, we don't recommend you make a down payment - if the car is stolen or totaled, you are out that money. Rather, use that cash to lower the MF by making multiple security deposits (MSD). You'll save money on the payment but the MSD cash is returned to you at the end of the lease.

You can't reverse engineer the payment without knowing the exact selling price that the ad uses to calculate the payment. The reason you can't make it work is that you are guessing at that number.

Also, you are assuming that the lease calculator on the BMW website automatically inputs the correct variables for that specific model, and I really doubt that is the case.

But, here are the actual numbers:

    $51,550 MSRP
    $700 dealer discount
    $750 Innovations credit
    $3000 downpayment
    $47,100 CAP cost
    .00129 Money factor
    63% residual (36mo, 10K/yr)
    Payment = $509/mo.+tax
    Due at signing: $4234 ($3000 + $725 acq.fee + $509 1st payment)

That calculates to $508.86/mo. No BMW website calculator necessary.

That deal should be easy to beat.. by at least $1500-$2000, which would lower the payment to $450-$465/mo. plus tax.

Best news I've heard all day. I planned on throwing $6K down, but I'll look into doing what Michaell said and put that into an MSD to lower the MF.

I really appreciate you guys taking the time to answer my noobie questions.

    Thanks!

Hi I'm a newbie here and was wondering if someone could tell me if I'm getting a good deal here.

    2015 BMW 4281 Gran Coupe
    36 months/10,000
    MSRP 47,100
    Negotiated price 43,695
    RV 63%, MF 0.00169
Monthly with taxes of 8.75% is $558.42/month

The money factor seemed a bit high to me compared to what I've been reading here...

Given those parameters, with the negotiated price also being the CAP cost, I get the same payment.

The money factor is marked up the maximum allowed from the base of .00129. That is adding around $31/mo. to the payment. That model has a $750 incentive from BMW. The additional dealer discount from MSRP is about 5.6%, which is fair, if the money factor wasn't being marked up.

It would appear that all other costs would be Due at Signing. How much is that amount and what is the breakdown?

Acquisition fee is marked up the maximum, as well (base fee is $725).

With the base money factor it's a good deal.. not so much with that one.

Hello guys, Im in the market for a new 428i couple can you guys tell me if this is a good deal? this isn't a lease, this is what they call a " Owner's Choice " which is said to be better than a lease.
  • steevosteevo Member Posts: 389
Looks like a balloon loan with a mileage limit. The mileage limit makes me wonder what the point is. Also you will pay tax on the whole thing. In NY, for example, you only pay tax on the amount leased,.your state may tax leases differently. The interest rate and the balloon payment seem to be right in line with the BMW lease program. Why is this better?
Doc fee, gap, cash down, you are dumping a lot into this for a 532 payment, in my opinion.
Look at the post above by kfdyx the last post of October 9th.....

Balloon notes aren't "better" than leases, but they are different. Usually, you only see them in states that tax the full value of the car. The car is in your name, and that preserves tax credits for trade-ins.. What state?

I stay in GA, they said that this is a new program they have just came out with, about three weeks ago- better than a lease, and at the end of the term you can turn it in like a lease. I think the steevo is thinking of bmw select?

Yeah, the taxes in GA on a lease just kill you - the taxes are adding $85/mo to the payment. I get the same numbers when I use the net cap cost.

They are using the base MF, which is good, but the acquisition fee is marked up from the base of $725.

Two ways to reduce the payment at this point - use up front money as MSD to reduce the MF, or negotiate a better selling price - you're getting about 5% off sticker at the moment, which is pretty good for a 2015 model.

Yeah.. that's why they are pushing balloon notes in GA, now.. You can get a trade-in credit against that massive tax bill, and when you want to give the car up, you can get a trade-in credit on the next one.. The new GA tax rules have really hurt leasing, there.

Wow, for 2015 it falls to 50% /15K, or should that be 60% /15K?

So I take it that the rates are the same for i vs. xi, correct?

    Whoops, my bad. Yes, 60%.

No difference between i and xi numbers, nor between 428 and 435.

    Michaell,

Spoke to a dealer here in Houston and the gentleman wouldn't even budge from a $700 discount that is claimed to be fantastic (since the 435i is in "high demand").

I will be talking to other dealers, but do we have MF and Residual on 435i Coupe and Gran Coupe with 36 Months/ 10K Year in Mileage?

The MSRP on the vehicle I was looking at was $58,550...what is a decent discount on this car? I've read on here around 6% or 7% would be good. Anyone have any luck getting a good deal on a 435i coupe or gran coupe lately? I would love to work with a net cap cost of about $51,000 - $52,000

.00129 MF and 63% residual on either model.. Both come with $750 Innovations credit from BMW, so the $700 discount is laughable.. Considering the incentive, 6%-7% off MSRP would be a decent deal on a new 2015 model. 7% off minus another $750 would be bottom dollar.

Thanks Michaell, very much appreciated. One more question...when they use the residual for calculations, is it off the MSRP ($58.550) or would it be off the NET Cap which in this case after a 7% and $750 discount is around $53,700? Thanks in advance.

I believe residual is calculated off MSRP (58550), not CAP (53700)

Residual is always based off the MSRP .. that way, when you negotiate a lower selling price, your payment drops accordingly.

My dealer here in MI quoted me a MF=.00169, Res=60% on a 2015 435i 36/15k. Based on what I have seen in the previous posts, the MF seems high. Would I be incorrect to challenge this?

Nope - base MF this month is .00129.

Politely but firmly inform your dealer that you won't sign a deal with an inflated MF.

Then, reach out to another BMW dealer. I'm sure you can find one that will work with you.

    Hey Guys-

Never posted here before but have found this forum very valuable in doing my homework for a new lease. I just leased a 2015 Estoril Blue 435i M Sport with a lot of M Performance extras (Exhaust, Power Kit, Rear Diffuser, Steering Wheel, Black Kidney Grills, Carbon Fiber mirror covers, etc.). Found it on the lot and had to jump on it. I think I got a decent deal but just wanted to get thoughts. Here is the deal I got:

    Orange County, CA
    10k miles
    36 month term
    MSRP: $66,390
    Negotiated Price: $62,160
    MF: 0.00129 bought down to .0008 w/ 7 MSDs
    Residual: 63%
Drive off: First month +$600 title/reg/doc fee
    Acq fee: $925
    Monthly payment: $699 w/ tax

    What do you think?

Adding the $925 on to the selling price, I get a payment of about $675/mo.+tax.
You probably already know that acq.fee is marked up $200 from the base amount. Other than that, about $24/mo. off what I calculate.

I'm looking at leasing a 2015 428i gran coupe in NorCal. What's ideal discounts people are seeing off MSRP on this series in the area?

My MSRP is $48,975 and invoice is $45,555. What selling price should I try to target before the $750 innovation credit + $1000 new grad credit.

5%-7% off MSRP, then subtract the incentives.

Selling Price: Below invoice - don't have the exact number at the moment
    39 Months, 12,000 miles, MF: .00129, Residual %: .6
At signing (all fees plus 1st payment): $2202
    PAYMENT: $599/month

Also - the dealer accepts multiple security deposits. What should I expect in terms of a decrease in payment?
