This may not be the right section to ask this question but I am curious why used Foresters (2011-2012) cost so much. Seems like the average residual value is 60% after 3 years based on leasing. A brand new Forester in 2011-2012 cost $22-24,000 (the non-premium models). Using $24k as the new price at a 40% depreciation, you are looking at $14,400 for a 3 year old Forester (I know other factors are involved but I am keeping this example simple).
Yet when I searched for 2011-2012 Foresters, I am seeing prices from $18,000 - $20,000. I find it very hard to understand why these vehicles "only" depreciated by $4,000-$6,000 (17%-25% depreciation) in 3-4 years. Why are these Foresters not worth the $14,000-$15,000 based on normal depreciation? I can find Honda CR-V for lower pricing (I would think Honda holds better value than Subaru).
Can someone explain this to me? Thanks in advance.

I think it's highly regional. Here in Colorado the only used subarus you can find under $10k have 150-180k miles on them.
Subaru is getting a reputation of a brand that holds its value well - better than Honda, in fact.
Hi All, I'm trying to figure out what I should pay for a 36 month/10k mile lease for an automatic Subaru Forester 2.5i. Zip code is 11217 (NYC). I've been quoted everything from $1000 down @ $340/month to $2000 down @ $273/month. I'm having a hard time figuring out what a reasonable monthly payment should be- ideally, I'd like to be at $250/month with no more than $1500 down. Any thoughts?

The 36/10 numbers for the Forester 2.5i are 60% and .00076. We would need to know the MSRP and selling price in order to model a payment for you.
Hi, I posted a few weeks ago and got the following info for a 2015 Subaru Forester 2.5i Limited without navigation. 36 months / 10k mile lease in NY
MF: .00049 RV: 59%
I used the true market value of: of $27,224.
I live in NY and I calculated: $249 for tax, title and registration $595 for the acquisition fee $850 for the destination fee $2,2105.78 for the sales tax
With taxes and fees, my estimated total cost was: $31,023.78.
I planned to put down $2,500.
So I estimated my adjusted cap cost to be: $28,523.78
To calculate my estimated lease payments, I used the formula: (Adjusted Cap Cost + Residual Value) * Money Factor + (Adjusted Cap Cost - Residual Value) / # Months of the Lease Term
I estimated my monthly lease payments to be $368
Imagine my surprise, when the dealership quoted me only $300 per month.
Is Subaru dumping 2015 inventory to make room for 2016 models? Are my calculations incorrect?
Would you please provide money factor and residual for 2015 2.5i Limited in Idaho? 36 month/ 10 k lease. Thanks
61% and .00067
Thank you for the numbers. Can you explain a little more on money factor? Do the 0.00067 is a Subaru offer that all buyer have good credit can be approved on this rate?
Here is the breakdown of the lease that they propose to me which I do not feel I am even close to the MF you provide from the number they gave me -

Here is the breakdown of the lease that they propose to me which I do not feel I am even close to the MF you provide from the number they gave me -
MSRP - $29,764
Negotiated Price - 27,691
Trade In - $2,251
Registration and Fee - $ 607
Accessories - $ 1,409.85
Tax - $1,781.64
Residual $18,156
0 down 36 month/ 10K Miles payment - $359/ month
Can you please help to shield some light? Thanks
The .00067 is the base rate from Subaru Finance; the dealer can mark it up for extra profit.
We do not recommend using trade equity to lower the payment .. if the car is stolen or totaled, you lose that money.
In Idaho, do they collect the tax for a lease up front or do they apply it to the monthly payment?
That payment does look high based on the selling price. Ask the dealer what the net cap cost is; there might be some fees being added in.

I get $363/mo with the higher MF; the base MF would have saved you about $25/mo.
These are numbers that I got from my dealer for the 2016 limited: "selling price is 27823 money factor is .00135 and redidual value is .63 = 18676.35." Aquisition fee is $595 and Title/Registration is $185. With $2500 down, what would you get for a payment?

Assuming that the $2500 goes to up front costs and nothing as cap cost reduction, I get $317/mo for a 36 month lease, before tax.
Can you please give me the numbers for a 2015 XT Premium 36 m w/ 18k mi in Ohio? Also when using the percentage to calculate residual value for the edmunds lease calculator do you use the MSRP?
Finally, will you please post when the 2016 numbers are available? Many thanks!

No such thing as "normal" when it comes to lease numbers, but, not unexpected.
This is the tier 1 MF; cannot go any lower than that.

So, two things to look for:
1. net cap cost may be different from selling price (which makes sense if you are rolling in fees)
2. MF is marked up
