Note also that incentives for the I4s are up for June--$1500 rebate, or $500 and low-rate financing, plus $500 loyalty rebate.

You can name the dealership, city and state right here in the forums for everyone's benefit... Just refrain from including individual contact information or salesperson names..

    Thanks!

hyundai dealer in my area put two out the door deals on the table. (1) basic gls V6, round figures of $16,900. (2)basic LX round figures $19,700. this evening i will choose one of those deals. any thoughts of which is the better deal, is appreciated. to me the look of the LX is sharper. however the $2800 saving with the GLS is also appealing.
thanks in advance for your opinions.
  • randydawrandydaw Member Posts: 20
Both are better than average deals; however, I think the GLS is a somewhat better deal when compared to its usual selling price.

If you don't need leather, telescoping steering wheel, 17" wheels, or the climate control system, then the GLS is a comparative steal. I got the LX because of the telescopic steering, period. If my arms had been longer, I'd have saved the money and gone with the GLS V-6.

Okay I don't actually know the invoice price but the MSRP is $21495 and the dealer does the Sams Club deal. $300 over invoice and then you tack on the $3000 incentives(loyalty and the other one)plus he reminded me of the $500 dealer fee..so it is really only a $2500 incentive. But would this still be a fair deal in the end?

Oh it has NO sunroof and it is cloth interior, he said the basic package..which is what we want.
  • tommyc2tommyc2 Member Posts: 9
Well 300 over invoice isnt to great, you should be able to beat that with minimal effort, the invoice they use says 20431, so you will pay 20731-2500=18231, the very first deal I ever was given walking onto first lot was 20631, then it went to 19995-2500= 17495 on try after few minutes, which to me wasnt to great yet, So I wouldnt buy it for 18231,

hyundai dealer in my area put two out the door deals on the table. (1) basic gls V6, round figures of $16,900. MSRP on this auto is the same as your post. invoice of this auto is $19831. see post #2219

The dealer made his final offer for LX with options @22k before rebate. After $2500+400(I am a recent graduate), the final offer will be $19100 before TTL. Is is a good deal??? Thank you.
  • randydawrandydaw Member Posts: 20
Depends on the part of the country. Here in Dallas, from recent trends, that would be $500-$1000 too high. If you can wait until the end of the month, your dealer may well be more motivated to deal than he is now.

fyi...JUN. 1 2:24 P.M. ET Hyundai Motor America on Thursday posted higher U.S. auto sales in May, powered by strong sales of the Sonata, its most popular sedan.

The Korean automaker said total sales in May rose 5.2 percent to 42,514 from 40,416 a year ago. The company's Sonata sedan, which saw volume more than double to 17,035, and its Azera sedan drove the gains. Hyundai's other models all posted year-over-year declines.

On 5/31 I stopped into Sansone's Auto Mall on route 1 in NJ. I was checking out Toyota Highlanders with salesman. We were riding around the lot when I saw the hottest Sonata I've ever seen! I think it had a black exterior. Wish I could've got a closer look but was too busy with salesman. Anyone else seen it and know the trim, options, and price of that beauty? :shades:
  • hope10hope10 Member Posts: 5
i was also given the price quote for 16,900(rounded figure) i wonder if dealers can lower the price because this is the first price quote i've got. the other dealers were around 17,200

    thanks

Make your written offers for less than $16,900 and find out.

The only Chrome worth mentioning on the Sonata is the Dual exhaust pipes, and they sure do look sweet! :)

Purchased over memorial weekend. Base LX in Southern Cali.
    $21,000 invoice
    -$2500 Rebate
    - $500 Trade in (almost 200K miles on it)
    --------------
    $18,000 +TTL

Also got free oil changes for life due to an early message left on my machine from a salesman. Had to really fight for these.

I'm looking at the Hyundai Sonata LX power sunroof and six disc in dash CD player. In other words loaded with every available option.

The two different dealers I have spoken with here in Utah, orem and Sandy are both trying to feed me the B.S. that there is not much markup in the sonata and therefore only claiming about $600 off MSRP.
The sticker on the Sonata I'm looking at list for 24,895.00

What would you suggest that I start my offer at on this vehicle before dealer rebates or incentives?

Any suggestions or help of any kind would be greatly appreciated and I forgot to mention I will be paying cash on this car due to a recent inheritance. does paying with cash make any difference?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Couple of things: you might print off the page here at Edmunds.com that shows the invoice pricing on the LX so they know you know there is quite a big markup on the LX. As for cash payment, it makes no difference unless you want to get a rebate associated with Hyundai's financing.

As for your offer... did they ask you for a counteroffer? That is a good sign they are willing to bargain. Looks like they are using the old "Buy low, sell high" strategy. If I were you I'd start no higher than invoice (before rebates). If you want to show them you know the "Buy low, sell high" strategy too, you could start at considerably below invoice and see what their reaction is.

I am looking to get the LX loaded with sunroof and CD changer ( all options ). $18.6 is where I am at now. Essentially, this is invoice on the LX with option package at invoice, minus $2,500, $500 cash back, $500 owner loyalty, plus $600 destination. They will give me $7,500 for my 2003 LX with 66K miles. Good deal?
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
That $18.6K figure sounds good, and very familiar. That was my special price with all Fees & Tax paid. I will say the changer, subwoofer and amp are overpriced. However the LX is a bargain, and the Telescoping wheel is a nice touch!. I have yet to use the sliding feature of the Center console, and sure would like to see the auto air quality pollution device working and light up, perhaps it's broken :confuse:

I am in Columbus, OH. My Saturday's experience was kinda interesting.

I was asking for GLS V6 + Sunroof for an OTD price $17000. The dealer then asked for $18000. I left and said I would go to another dealer. On my way to the second dealer, I got a phone call from the first dealer saying they could do it with $17900 OTD, and then $17800. I still think it's too high and rejected the offer.

What do you guys think? Is $17800 good enough for a brand new GLS V6 + Sunroof?
  • dcurrandcurran Member Posts: 15
I just got that exact figure, $17,450 today for a loaded LX ( sunroof and sound system ). That seems like a very good price to me for a loaded LX.
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
I posted a few months back that it's possible to get the fully loaded LX at the GLS price. It is easiest done by dealing down, not up!.

Example one: "I love your GLS Sir, this is good quality cloth but I would really prefer Leather, and that Electric Chair, wow!".

Example two: "What a beautiful LX, but I don't need this fancy Seat, and the leather smells, that is the leather right?. 6 CD Changer, you know Sir one Mp3 Disc can hold 250 songs, that's 15 regular CDs!".
  • godeacsgodeacs Member Posts: 481
Where are you located? dealer? That seems like a fantastic deal.... I show the loaded LX at $22,900 invoice though (inc dest charge). Where is the $500 cash back from? No deals like that in the San Antonio area...lol
  • dcurrandcurran Member Posts: 15
I am in MA. You're right, the loaded LX with dest. is
$22,885 - 2,500, $500 owner loyalty, $730 hold back. I don't know where the $500 bonus cash comes from, nor do I care.
That amount comes to $18,655. How he gets to anywhere in the 17's, I don't know. How that guy JoeDirt, got a fully loaded GLS below 16K is anyone's guess.
Always work one dealer versus another.
They hate to give the business to another dealer.

I paid $17,927 for a GLS V6 + Sunroof here in Denver, CO last week. It was the best deal I was able to get in this area. Was working with 3 different dealers. Seemed like a pretty good deal given that the TMV on Edmunds.com is $18,288 after rebates.
  • tarheel96tarheel96 Member Posts: 17
$17K OTD may be a little low depending on what taxes are like there in OH. Here in MD, I bought a GLS V6 Prem Sport for $16,900 - about $18,200 OTD. Would have been about $17,800 OTD with just the sunroof. No dealer in the Baltimore/Washington area I talked to was willing to match the price. You may be able to get them to go lower, but IMO $17800 OTD is pretty good.
  • jld25jld25 Member Posts: 2
I went to visit the dealer yesterday to look at buying a GLS V6. Made the mistake of talking about monthly payments versus price of the car. This is my first time buying a new car. On the GLS V6 they were offering me $20,000 ($320 monthly at 72 months - argued with them that I only wanted 60 months but they said it wasn't possible) before rebates and anything I'm putting down on it. From reading around here this seems high right? What should my next course of action be? Negotiate the actual price . . . is $18 more in the ball park for a GLS V6?
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
One of the worst thing to do is to talk payments. The Dealer can find a payment for everyone!
  • jld25jld25 Member Posts: 2
Yeah I realize now that talking payments right off the bat wasn't the way to go. So I'm now trying to negotiate the actual price. If invoice is around 19k should I be asking to pay 18k or is this still high?

I really can't answer that, but you should not be asking, let them do the talking, of course you have the final word!. Remember, I bought the top LX at this price. If there is another Dealer in town, I would spend some time with them, as that payments thing might bite you in the butt. (Dealers have unlimited tricks they try). You know Edmunds has the most helpful advice on buying a new Car at www.edmunds.com, click on tips and advice. Good luck, but do get the Sonata!
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
Cash kind of does make a difference. The Dealer generates revenue on the sale of the Car, the trade in (if any), and Financing. The last one should be illegal, but Dealers hook up many customers with their local sources.

Only 1 in 3 Customers who walk into a showroom are eligible for financial assistance, and we know the old saying, "Money talks, BS walks" :)

Go in at the end of the month, and tell them you are here to buy today! (Do all homework beforehand)

Go to www.theautochannel.com Then click on Hyundai in the column of car on the right side. You'll see that this is listed as a "commission" and is up $500 to the $2,000 level. It is listed as a factory to dealer incentive.

I don't know if this is the markup from invoice to MSRP. If not, if could explain (more than holdback) how dealers can sell below invoice, before rebates.

If there's $2500 rebate on the 6 cyl plus $2,000 dealer incentive from the factory, anyone should be able to buy a 6 cyl Sonata for at least $4500 below MSRP. Add in a dealer discount of at least $800 and other rebates, like military or graduates and a smart buyer should be able to get a 6 cyl for $5500 to $6000 below MSRP. But watch out for the dealer grabbing back several hundred through documentation and other dealer fees.
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
Since dealers get a piece of the financing they probably make out better if the sale is not a cash deal.

The idea of getting a better deal for paying cash is so, so old school...at least 40 years old. Yeah, they'll lower the price bor cash, but not any lower than they would have taken on a financed deal.

Did you say the 5 speed A/T can only do 4 speed manual shiftronic? That loses some of the fun.
  • dcurrandcurran Member Posts: 15
Yesterday, I bought the Sonata LX with sunroof/sound system for $17,450 plus tax/title/doc fee etc. Total of $18,200. Plus 6 free oil changes. He also bumped up my trade (2003 Sonata LX wth 67K ) to $7,650.
$17,450 is less than I paid for 2003 LX. Not bad.
I figured the oil changes are worth another $180 bucks.
If you're going to buy the car, you might as well mention the oil changes as the final close. That will close the deal.
  • randydawrandydaw Member Posts: 20
Great deal, dcurran! That may be the best price yet reported.

I just came across this report that Hyundai has upped their dealer incentives for the Sonata this month:

    http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2006/06/05/010045.html

Apparently the dealers now have $500 more to work with than they did a few days ago. (Sorry, I just realized that others had already posted this info)

Fellow buyers: take charge! Pick a VERY low number, and stick to it! Walk out if the price is $100 too high! Let them know you have other options! Good luck.
  • dcurrandcurran Member Posts: 15
Wow. Incentive amounting to more than "10% of the consumer price". I'm not sure what that means. If I paid $17,450 does that mean the dealer makes $1,745 bucks. If so, that's a huge chunk of change. Timing is everything. It looks like I may have lost out on big savings. If I was in the market now, I would be sure to print out that page and bring it to the dealer!!

I bought two GLS V6 about 15 days ago and I got a decent deal I hope

The first one Steel Gray basic GLS V6 for 17377.86 out the door (including the 2500 dollar cashback, tax, docs, all other fees)

Second one is a powder pearl white GLS V6 basic for 16877.00 out the door (500 dollars owner rebate on top of the 2500 dollar cash back)

They were offering me a GL 4 cyl automatic for 17100 out the door so I didn't think that was worth it

However I really wanted a manual transmission GL 4 cyl and they just couldn't find any around michigan, ohio or illinois.... :(

Let me know if these prices were reasonable. Thanks

Mpansare1 - your email address is private. In any case, Antwerpen Hyundai in Catonsville/Baltimore. Do NOT go to Antwerpen Hyundai in Clarksville - same company but not nearly as willing to work with you as the folks in Baltimore. Email me if you want a POC.

I live in the Columbus area and was wondering what dealership you are working with. I'm interested in a fully loaded LX, but the Dealer where I bought my 2003 wasn't willing to come down enough in my opinion. I was in for routine maintenance on my current one and was just killing time when a salesman approached me. Dennis Hyundai is the Dealership and they are or at least this guy was high pressure. Had to walk away.

dcurran, don't despair. I think you got that wonderful price precisely because the incentive WAS in place. I got a deal on an LX for $17,200 for a base LX without sunroof last month, and I was wondering how you got the extra $1000+ worth of options for only $250 more. I don't think you could have done better, or at least not appreciably better.

Perhaps I'm the one who should have waited! But then I would have had to drive my old car over memorial day weekend...
  • godeacsgodeacs Member Posts: 481
You 2 guys should stop crying!!!...lol You both got fantastic deals that have the rest of us drooling! FWIW, the internet guy at Freeman in Irving offered me $19,261 for a 2006 LX w/o the sunroof/CD changer option. Based on your deal I figure that's at least $1600 too high. So much for the deals in north Texas...

Had 1 salesman (not impressive at all) who told me no way are loaded LXs going for under $19000 after the rebate. He wouldn't even get near $20K - needless to say we walked and fast....He was one of those guys who said he had a "great deal" for us (needless to say his definition and mine were different) but only on that day!! Name of the dealer was Hyundai Auto Mall in Kyle, TX, just north of San Marcos on I-35.
  • dcurrandcurran Member Posts: 15
The sales tax was based on $9800. The sales price, $17450 - $7650( trade-in ). Sales tax in MA is 5%.
Their doc fee was $299. I said that was a ridiculus amount for paperwork and he said "we have to make money somewhere". Anyway, total taxes, feed registration was $800
What is very interesting is how they write up the sale. The sales numbers put into the bill of sale don't reflect anywhere near to how the actual deal was done.
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
I agree with how the dealers confuse some people about the adtual price. What needs to be done is take the OTD price and subtract sales tax and other fees paid to the state (environmental fees such as tire, battery, tax stamp, whatever) to determine the actual price. Trade-ins also confuse the actual price of the new vehicle as dealers can play with the trade-in value.

Used to be, maybe still is, dealers would show on paper a higher trade-in allowance offset by a higher new car price so they could show a person buying your used car what they paid for your car in order to sell your used car for more money.
