I went to my Mazda dealer's lot this afternoon to check the Appearance Package again. They had several MZ6s with both Sport and the AP. (One Sepang Green 6S with 5-speed MT for what it's worth. No Sports Package.)

The Appearance Package is considerably different than the SP: the front GFX in some ways looks better, the rear GFX definately looks better than the SP bumper facia. It stands out more and there are small arches (like fender arches) over the twin exhaust pipes, which have the standard round chrome tips. The cars with the AP did not have the big spoiler, a couple had the lip spoiler. There is definately a separation "line" where the add-on GFX pieces are attached, more like a small lip.

If I was buying a 6 with GFX I would take the Appearance Package over the Sport Package. That's basing it on being better looking. But at $900 sticker I would not buy it. Instead, I would opt for factory leather or some combination of options that give more value, read daily usefulness. Those four pieces of plastic just do not look like $900.

There were plenty of V6's on the lot with Sport Packages, list price $25,955 -- sales price after discounts $22,489. Most had AT. Only 3 had Bose.

My friend got a 6i 5MT a couple of weeks ago. His complaint so far has been the lack of low-end torque and wide turning radius, very much inline with reviews and such.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
Yeah, the 6i is pretty weak right off idle, especially with the AC on. My Protege ES 2.0L had better low end. Once it gets going though, it's pretty good for a 4 cyl.
  • cookie01cookie01 Member Posts: 369
I have the 6-cyl and I got both recall notices.

    just fyi.
  • ashutoshsmashutoshsm Member Posts: 1,007
To all those who got the recall notice/s ... When was your car built? When did you take delivery?

I'm taking mine in tomorrow for other work, and would like to know whether (either of) these recalls affect mine so they can take care of it while they have the car for the day.

BTW - no problem getting a loaner, I called, asked, and was given and affirmative answer! Something 'equivalent' (tough job!) from the Enterprise lot across the street/block.

My apologies if this has been discussed already, but I wanted to express my opinions- I recently attended the Mazda Rev It Up driving event in Philly. Anyone who is a 6 fan, owner, or prospective owner should really check this series out. Best 39$ I've ever spent on anything automotive related, and really got me hyped on Mazda's product line. From what I understand, the only mods to the 6s that we raced were low profile performance tires and an throaty exhaust notes.

I was very impressed with this vehicles handling ability, inofficious traction control, and firm brake feel, despite a day's worth of abuse. Not a pro driver by any means, I managed to finish mid pack among the 1100 Novice category racers this past weekend, and I learned a significant amount about performance driving. A

As a cut-rate sport sedan, I'd say the 6s has got it goin on. As a family car, I dont really care for the interior fabric, somewhat tight backseat, and red instrumentation (obviously a personal preference), and lack of torque off the line, more noticeably apparent in the 6i.

Overall, I have a much more favorable opinion of the Mazda line (I drove a Pro5 as well as an MPV too), which is likely exactly what Mazda was going for.

Has been discussed her before, but thanks for bringing it up again!

As far as I know, all remaining events (of which there are precious few - only DC and NY remain, I think) are sold out. If you know anyone at a Mazda dealership, you *may* be able to wrangle an additional invite for the press day, or so I understand!

As for the growling exhaust, I do believe that's standard.

The awesome tires are Falkens ( ;) inside joke! )

Sorry for bringing this up again, and, yes, I've read past discussion threads on this subject. But I am still having a tough time getting info on this system. Is it a great system or not? I've heard mixed reports...and have never been a huge Bose fan to begin with but not happy with the base system. Anything anyone can offer is greatly appreciated.
  • jhtlagjhtlag Member Posts: 39
Advertised it on the radio: said there were a few paid spots available on Friday, July 25. implying, of course, the Sat, Sun dates are sold out.

Agree with Fowler's comments earlier that the appearance package looks good, but for $900 for four pieces of add-on plastic?

  • cubfan2cubfan2 Member Posts: 18
I got the appearance. I like it; it looks and thus feels sportier. I saw the base model and couldn't afford the Sport model (fully loaded) so this one really looks sharp. It's silver and there's a chrome package that came with it for another hundred or so. 900 is MSRP by the way... so it's not as bad as one thinks.

    Hi All,

Thanks for all of the info. Been reading for a couple months now and your comments helped me make the decision.

Good News: Got a Silver 6i last Thursday with AT, moonroof, leather seats, compass mirror, mud flaps, trunk liner and lip spoiler. LOVE the car!!

Bad News: Two days later backed into a construction truck (not my fault, and first accident in 25 years).

Good News: Damage ONLY to trunk (deck lid) and they had them in stock. Also the lip spoiler had not been added yet.

Took the car in today (600 miles already) and will get it back on Wednesday with repairs and spoiler.

Used the S-Plan and $1500 rebate and paid $19,000 plus tax. Was very pleased with the deal.

Pictures of car and damage (OUCH) can be seen here: http://homepage.mac.com/karden/Mazda/PhotoAlbum34.html

Will add more pix when I get it back.

    Thanks again!

If I got a Redfire 6 with the Appearance Package, at my age, 72, I would be looking in my rearview mirror all the time for the highway patrol. Cops would see me as the next driver headed for Sante Monica's market!

For those who think the Appearance and Sport packages are overkill, wait 'til you see the interior trim on Mercedes' new Maybach 57! It's in the next issue of C&D. Wood everywhere, even on the headliner. The center stack and console are solid wood. They should have called it the Maybarf! Hope Mazda doesn't get any ideas from it.

I just realized that the 6i doesn't not come with an automatic climate control. It is somewhat disappointing, but I'll just have to live without it. I wonder why Mazda neglected it for the 6i :( At least make it part of an option!
  • mazdamarlamazdamarla Member Posts: 350
I'm going on 380 miles on the initial tank of gas that the dealer filled it with for me.

I'll probably fill it up today and start officially figuring out my mpg. But just wondered, how big is the gas tank on the 6?
  • ian2ian2 Member Posts: 168
    18 gal according to Mazda.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
the Mazda6i with a manual can theorhetically go 576 miles on the freeway if it's doing 32 mpg. Now I can drive all the way to Chicago on one tank of gas. Sweet.

What's everyone been getting for mileage in the 6i's? I've been getting about 24-25mpg city.
  • cookie01cookie01 Member Posts: 369
You almost make me wish I got the 4-cyl. I can just barely get 380 miles when it's running on fumes.
  • the_big_hthe_big_h Member Posts: 1,583
    this past weekend in Philly

steering is very nice, the V6 really has a nice roar when you let it rip.

But my lack of autox skill revealed its inherent extra weight compared to, say, a Protege.

when I over drove the car and tried to correct myself out of a turn, the car definitely has a strong understeer that could have been avoided if I attacked the turn with a smoother race line.

but meh, good car overall :)

    Hi All,
The wife & I took a nice little 1,200 mile vacation last week. Drove from NJ to Wilmington, NC, across to Blowing Rock, and back to NJ. First, this car handles better at 85 - 90 mph then most cars handle at 60! It was SOO DIFFICULT to stay at a reasonable speed, keeping an eye on the speedo is essential. The climate control worked great under all conditions, even in the 90's with equivalent humidity. Anyone else notice how much runoff comes out of the AC. The first time I saw it, I thought I had a fluid leak! The real fun started once we got on the back roads in the Blue Ridge Mts. Man, I love to drive, but I can't believe that some of those roads have a 50 MPH speed limit. Blind curves galore, elevation changes, and steep dropoffs. Mostly stayed in 2nd & 3rd, but still managed 50 to 60+. The famous Brake Dust issue must be getting better; I could still tell that the front alloys were suppose to be the same color as the backs ;-> As to handling, what can I say that hadn't already been said. This car NEVER surprised me (badly, that is!). The Blue Ridge Parkway is fantastic, spent a couple of hours on it. Beautiful vistas, at least for the passenger. The driver better keep his eyes on the road! Averaged 25 MPG for the trip, even with the 3 1/2 hour traffic jam on the outer beltway at DC! For you DC residents, does it make more sense to go West on the beltway instead of East to go north on 95? As a side note, I passed a car carrier on the NJT with a couple of RX-8s on board (but NO 6's). Great looking car, puts the new Z to shame! All in all, had a great time!
One question I've been meaning to ask; for how many of you is this your first 6 cyl. It was for me, and with the exception of the reduced gas mileage, I haven't missed those 4 bangers at all!
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
"I haven't missed those 4 bangers at all!"

The 4 banger in the Mazda6 isn't the typical 4 banger that most people are used to. It's actually pretty quick and quicker than many V6-automatic sedans. If you have a Mazda6s automatic, watch out for the manual 4 bangers, they'll give you a run for your money. It's quicker than my parent's old V6 Camry auto. According to C&D, it does 0-60 in 7.9 seconds, which is very respectable and by no means a slow-poke. No matter what car I would have ended up with, I will always miss my old V8 Mustang. After that car though, I have become very mileage conscience and will not get a car that's capable of sub 20 mpg tanks. I check my mileage every tank.
  • ian2ian2 Member Posts: 168
My family had a 92 Camry V6, which ran fine but required premium gas and was getting about 400 miles to a tank on the highway. We then got a 03 Accord EX-L, which is very peppy and gets around 24/31mpg. I'm getting a 6i 5MT because I don't feel the need to burn rubber off every stop light... ok, maybe once a while, I'll dump the clutch and surprise other drivers.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
The V6 in the Mazda6 isn't even really a tire burner. It doesn't have enough low end grunt to really smoke the tires. If you just let out the clutch a little above idle and floor it, you won't be able to break the tires loose. You have rev it up a little and dump the clutch to get the tires spinning. With my Mustang, you could be idling down the street with the clutch out, punch it, and burn the tires right off the rims. That thing would do burnouts right off idle.
  • seafseaf Member Posts: 339
Maybe because the 6s has traction control standard? Unless there's a way to turn it off, you're not going to be burning any rubber.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
if the car I drove had the traction control turned off, or even if you could turn it off. Either way, I couldn't feel the TCS kicking in, and I know the Mazda6s V6 won't smoke the tires unless you do some fancy clutch work. Maybe you can't turn it off? Doesn't matter, it wouldn't burn the tires anyway.

So I go to fill up my gas tank at lunchtime. Put the nozzle in, turn on the pump and within seconds gas just comes GUSHING out of my tank hole thing as though it's already full! WTH??? I yank the nozzle out and the gas continues to gush out, down the side of my car, onto my feet and shoes (wearing open-toed sandals, by the way). Finally stops. So I put the nozzle back in, like half-way this time, and pull on the handle. GUSHHHHHH out the tank hole. This happened like 3 or 4 times before it finally let me put gas in the tank!

Has this happened to anyone else? Why did this happen? Pissed me right off, and here I was going to fill it 'til it clicked off automatically and start keeping track of my mpg. Instead I just put $10 in and left it at that (about 1/2 tank). Guess I'll start keeping track of mpg NEXT time I fill up - if it works that time.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
Never had that happen. It's probably the fuel nozzle, not your car.
  • maxamillion1maxamillion1 Member Posts: 1,467
Take it to your dealer and have it checked out. That wouldn't happen to me more than once.
  • mazdamarlamazdamarla Member Posts: 350
I'll see what happens next time.

I've gone to this gas station, and that pump, dozens of times before in my old car, and that's never happened.
  • ashutoshsmashutoshsm Member Posts: 1,007
... asking the obivous question here (don't take offense!) - did you insert the pump nozzle all the way in? The opening to the tank seems lower/deeper/more recessed relative to the side of the car than it did in my Pro.

Of course - also have it looked at by the dealer! But for your own satisfaction, you may want to go to a gas station (just for your next fillup) that has longer nozzles. Gas on one's feet - that's a stinker!
  • mazdamarlamazdamarla Member Posts: 350
Yes - the first time, when it gushed ALL OVER, I'd inserted it all the way into the tank. After I removed it and tried again, I only inserted it part-way, and it still gushed out all over.

Yes - even tho I went into the bathroom at the Admiral station and washed my hands and wiped my feet and shoes off as best I could with a wet paper towel, I swear I can still smell the fragrance of "Petrol 87 Octane" on myself.

I was in Philly this past weekend as well- both V6s that I drove on my runs through the actual race course had the TCS.
Since I'm not a pro, I left it on both times- there is a button to the left of the wheel, and there is a dash light that indicates ONLY when it is switched off.

  • cookie01cookie01 Member Posts: 369
sure, I'd like cheaper gas, but Marla's story reminds me how sometimes it's cool to live in one of only two "Can't pump your own" states.
I'm not allowed to dump gas all over my shoes!!! heheheh
  • mazdamarlamazdamarla Member Posts: 350
The kicker is, I was going to go to this full-service station in town - one of the only ones that I'm aware even exists right around where I live. But I decided - NO, I'll go to a self-serve, that way there won't be any chance of pumping the gas past the auto-off when the pump stops. DUMMIE ME! It coulda been the mechanic guy in his mechanic clothes and work boots that got the gas spilled on him! LOL.

A co-worker of mine has a 2003 Acura TL Type-S with the automatic transmission.....it blew up last night with a little over 12K miles. Why hasn't there been a recall?

    I'm glad I have a Mazda...lol...
  • cubfan2cubfan2 Member Posts: 18
I'm incredulous that the Owners Manual calls for shifting to occur in the 6 S at 17 (to 2nd); 26 (to third); 33 (to fourth); 38 (to fifth)...(or close to these figures). Why does Mazda do this? It feels alot more natural to shift 20 (to 2nd), 30 (to third), 45 to fourth; 60 to fifth...I don't understand.
  • mjvchicagomjvchicago Member Posts: 149
I could theoretically get 432 miles out of my 6s if I ran it to empty... never do that! But when I fill up I usually have about 5 gallons left or so and just do the math based on the 360 miles on my trip odometer. Realistically speaking, I get 360 miles per tank in about 70/30 city/hwy driving.

As for getting the tires to break loose, it seems I can do it pretty easily by slowly letting the clutch out with a gradual application of the gas. So rather than a dumping of the clutch, it's more like a "sliding". I don't do it often, but I've done it. Probably would mean more clutch wear if I did it a lot.

Marla - very sorry about the gas tank problems. Never had that happen, but learned to not top off the tank with my other cars!
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
Can you burn out when you just roll off idle and punch it, without slipping the clutch? I'd be surprised if you could.
  • jgriffjgriff Member Posts: 362
Yep, I think Honda is having lots of real tranny issues, and doing the best they can to bury/hide a recall.

I dumped my '01 CL, after my tranny problem #1 at 3-years 36k miles. There are many who are having the same problems re-occur.

Once was enough for me, I'm out there. I'm a converted Mazda guy (at least for now).
  • jgriffjgriff Member Posts: 362
OK people, almost 2 months and 2000 miles later on my black Mz6-i 5sp. Sport Package. I’ve got a couple of opinions/thoughts…

    ----Likes----
    1. I really find the Navi compartment a nice handy extra storage bin.

    2. Sport Package looks, & 17" tires and wheels, definitely sets the looks apart from the all too many look-a-like vehicles. However I would have preferred (at the time of purchase) a dealer-installed option for a deck lid vs. a wing-spoiler.

    3. At first I thought I did not like the looks of the round vents, but now I find them incredibly infinite in finding the right air flow (up/down/left/right/closed etc. etc.)

    4. Like the nice twin exhaust look, even though it is mostly for looks on the 6i.

    5. Struts vs. hinges on the trunk, MHO the hood should have had struts vs. prop rod.

    6. The ALC (sound control) on the stereo system.

    7. Better gas mileage (23-24/city 30-32/highway), regular 87 gas vs. higher octane.

    8. Lower/Better; price, car payments, insurance rates.

    9. Have been fairly pleased with the 4-cyl., it is pretty darn good, but could be just a hair quieter.

    10. Lotsa smiles per miles.

    ----Dislikes----
    1. When the sun is shining just right, I find the glare from the Mazda emblem (on the steering wheel) a little annoying. Wished it was satin/aluminum-silver –or- black rather than bright shiny chrome.

    2. I’ve got leather wrap steering wheel, gear-shift, but plastic gear-shift boot. How much more would a little leather have cost?

    3. The too BIG chrome grill smile (especially on black). I purchased the sport grill instead, which I felt should be included with the Sport Package.

    4. Sun-visors; missing the extenders and lacking that quality thickness and feel.

    5. Hate the front brake dust problem, you have to clean them regularly.

    6. Would be nice to be able fold down the back seats from the back as well as the trunk. Not a biggie since I don’t fold them down very often.

    7. I can't always seem to get out of 1st gear smoothly enough. I’m guessing it has to do with lacking low-end torque setup ??

Can't wait to see what the upcoming hatch and wagons look like –or- maybe the RX8.
  • housethouset Member Posts: 36
Going back to the Gas tank, I don't like the fact that the nozzle is attached to the ring, but there is no where to hang it on the door.. Guess I'm just used to my old acura.. other than that I love my car.

The mp3 player will be arriving sometime next week.. Can't wait to put it in.
  • jgriffjgriff Member Posts: 362
Yes that too, seem petty but those are some of the small things that really make a car complete.

My Acura CL had a hanger but it was not attached. Now the 6 is attached but NO place to hang it, and I don't want to cause any undue damage.
  • mjvchicagomjvchicago Member Posts: 149
Well, I wouldn't call it burning out, but I'd bet it leaves a little rubber. Used to do it on my Grand Am too. I've never stomped and gotten any kind of squeel from the tires though.
  • gee35coupegee35coupe Member Posts: 3,387
Transmission "problem" from everyone. JD power, Consumer Reports, and any other reliability study you can name of. Could it be the fact that they bend over backward for the consumer if it happens? Or is it that the problem isn't as widespread as you would believe.

Kinda like if you look at the number of posts in this topic, you'd think there were Mazda6's all over the roads. It just ain't true.
  • mazda6smazda6s Member Posts: 1,901
Yeah, it's just a conspiracy by Mazda6 fans to spread bad rumors about Honda.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
I thought the problem only affected 1-2% of the vehicles, and I heard that figure a while ago. Now, the only person I know with a TL has a transmission failure, and it's a 2003 model, with 12,000 miles. Hasn't Honda been having these issues for a couple years now? Why haven't they fixed it for 2003? How does Honda know that only 1-2% of the vehicles are affected when there are still vehicles out there that are having transmission failures? What is causing the failures? If Honda knows it affects "1-2%" of the vehicles, WHERE'S THE RECALL?

"Or is it that the problem isn't as widespread as you would believe."

You don't know the answer to that. I guarantee there are affected vehicles out there that are going to have a transmission failure, but haven't yet. It is only going to get more widespread in the future than it is now. I never claimed it to be widespread, but it's widespread enough for people to know about it. It IS a recognized issue.
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
They should be based upon impact on driver/passenger safety, not frequency of incidence.

I'd say a transmission failure is a big safety risk.
  • carguy58carguy58 Member Posts: 2,303
you would think there was 6's all over the road". Where I live I see 6's everyday. I don't think its anything special anymore to see a 6. Still a nice looking car though. I have already seen 1 Rx-8 out on the roads. This generation of Mazda's have sold very well where I live: the 02 Pro 5 and 03 6 are very good sellers where I live.
