I noticed that the brightness of the upper display is not always correct. I think it's suppose to adjust based on outside light conditions, however, sometimes it seems like it can take several minutes to get to the right brightness. The lower display is fine. Anyone else have this "problem"? Am I missing something?

My daughter just bought a used 2002 Saab SE with just 8100 miles on it. The manual says that she can burn 87, 90 or 93 octane gas in it. What has been people's experience with these different octanes?
• richn2richn2 Member Posts: 44
I had just read in the Friday business section of my local newspaper that GM is trying real hard to boast sales. GM had given all of there employees 2 coupons that they can give out that would allow them to receive the s plan discount. Has anybody used the s plan to purchase a Saab and do you really get a good deal by using it. Secondly, if any GM employee would like to give one out I would be happy to take it off of your hands.
• sloanesqsloanesq Member Posts: 60
That sounds great because I will probably be buying a new car around August/September. Hopefully, the 2004's will have ironed out all the first year bugs. Also, I'll get in line right behind richn2 if there are any GM employees willing to part with their coupons.

Bought a new vector last week. Read the manual, and it says that 93 octane is recommended. I live in LA and haven't been able to find it. Does anyone know where in LA (South bay and west LA areas) 93 octane is sold. I've been putting in 91 and haven't noticed any ill effects. Does anyone know if 91 octane reduces engine performance?

Some idiot sat on my 9-3 arc hood in a public parking lot this weekend. I can see the little shallow indentations from hands and a butt on the hood. So minor that only I notice it, but my eyes are drawn to it now every time I get into the car. Paint is not scratched or damaged in anyway. Has anyone had any experience with paintless dent removal on the metallic paint? Is this something I can get done at the dealer?

I actually had some critical comments on an otherwise well executed car. Your thoughts on my thoughts?

1. Can someone please explain the purpose of the right side of center area between seats. It is nice that emergency/handbrake is disguised as part of this on left side. But the other side, the right side, has this flimsy piece of plastic that broke off into my hand yet again. I also notice a slit on the top. What is this for?

2. I could swear I saw a car on showroom floor today with leather seats and cloth inserts in door and center armrest. Was I dreaming this or is this common set-up?

3. I realize it is a nice plastic, but did anyone else feel their was a heck of a lot of plastic for a luxury car in there? I mean no Wood, metal, faux carbon fiber or anything?
• tgp1810tgp1810 Member Posts: 112
1. The other side for accessories. Currently they have a CD holder for the area, and I've also seen a cup holder. It's a convince feature - you are able to switch out what you need. To see what you can currently purchase check out http://www.saabcatalog.com

2/3. The cloth inserts in the doors can be found on the Linear. The Arc and Vector models get the upgraded leather inserts in the doors (which in my opinion look nicer). On the Arc models, there is wood accents along the doors and on the center area. There is also the option to get a wood insert for the stick knob. The Vector comes with (brushed?) metal inserts along the doors, the steering wheel, and in the center area. The only 9-3 model lacking these amenities, and where black plastic takes its place is the Linear. Saab Catalog does have the metal inserts found in the Vector as accessories that can be added to either the Linear or Arc.

I could be wrong, however, I don't think that the Linear has the leather inserts as an option. It's funny that you don't have wood (Arc) or metal (Vector) in your car but you do have the leather inserts. Maybe I missed something?

Not sure why it would “break off in your hand” unless you are grabbing at it. It’s there to 1) balance out the center by matching the look of the brake and 2) offer more utility by having several accessories fit in there (ice scraper, CD holder, extra cupholder). I removed it once to look at it and it hasn’t been an issue since

>>I could swear I saw a car on showroom floor today with leather seats and cloth inserts in door and center armrest. Was I dreaming this or is this common set-up?<<

From reading about this on another forum, I believe that earlier production Linears had the center cloth armrest, but have since made them leather. I believe the door inserts are still cloth. I have an Arc, so I can’t say for sure (mine are both leather)

>>I realize it is a nice plastic, but did anyone else feel their was a heck of a lot of plastic for a luxury car in there? I mean no Wood, metal, faux carbon fiber or anything? <<

Well, that was one reason that I went up to the Arc. The real wood accents definitely lend to a more luxurious look, IMO.

Keep in mind that this is considered the “near luxury” category. While the base 9-3 may have no wood trim and cloth inserts, it does have leather seats standard. I could just as easily ask why the “luxury” brands like Mercedes or BMW would even offer cloth seats. Most cars in this class have some luxury items standard, and some not. The bottom line is that you can still get the car without all the items if you don’t want them (and save $$) or get the next model up or add an option package or 2 if you do want them.

If the Linear, or say, base 325 aren’t luxurious enough for you, just add a few thousand bucks and you can get pretty much all you would want in this price range.

If you had looked at an Arc, you wouldn’t have questions 2 & 3. Though you might still have a plastic handle in your hand. :)

Some CDs have the song name written onto the CD. Of all the CDs I have, about 5 have this. Pretty cool when it works.

It'd be nice if I could burn MP3s to (regular) audio CDs with the CD text included. Anyone know how to do this?
• tgp1810tgp1810 Member Posts: 112
From Roxio's Easy CD Creator help file:
CD-Text
A music CD format in which up to 5,000 characters
of CD information (title, artist, song titles, etc.) is written into the CD's
table of contents. This information is displayed when the CD is played back
on CD-Text-enabled players.

Write CD Text
(available only if your CD-Recorder supports CD-Text):
Select this option if you want to include CD-Text information, such as CD title,
artist, and track titles on the CD. This information can then be displayed on
consumer electronic devices that support CD-Text information. This option is
only available when you write in Disc-at-Once mode and if your CD-Recorder supports
CD-Text information.
When you hit the record button make sure you can see options. Select Disc-at-Once.
At the top under Copy to Hard Drive First, the option Write CD-Text should now
be selectable. If your burner doesn't support CD-Text information, you will
be unable to use this feature. Make sure that the information on your MP3 files
is correct so that the correct artist and song name are displayed. I tried to
test it out, but apparently my burner doesn't support it :-/

Hope this is of some help.

Using Nero

After dragging and dropping audio tracks into your audio layout, click on the 'File' menu and then choose 'Compilation Info'. Choose the 'Audio-CD' tab, click on 'Write CD Text on CD', and [optionally] enter the title of the disc itself and the name of its artist (maximum 64 characters).

In addition to naming the disc itself, you can also name each invidual audio track in your compilation. Just double-click on each of the audio tracks in your layout and type the title and artist information into the appropriate boxes.

VERY IMPORTANT: CD-Text information can only be written by using the disc-at-once writing method. In order to turn this on, click on the 'File' menu and then choose 'Compilation Info'. Click on the 'Burn' tab. Select 'Disc-at-Once' and also select 'Finalize CD'.

I guess either not that many people read this board or the one's that do read it must not work for GM. My feeling is if GM had really wanted to help thier sales they would do something radical. How about allowing anybody that is willing to purchase one of thier products to get the S plan discount. Now that would be nice. Offering 0% financing is nice but to combine the two just might stimulate sales. But then again what do I know, I'm only a consumer.

Wow I really did not mean to go off like that, so sorry.

I do have some questions regarding the 9-3. How is it to driving in snow, and I do not mean a light dusting. Anything from 3 to 6 inches. Do you get alot of ice build up when it snows.

Somebody had mentioned that the trunck is small. Is it possible to get more then 1 golf bag inside.

To anybody that responds I would like to thank you in advance.

Somebody had mentioned that the trunck is small. Is it possible to get more then 1 golf bag inside.<<

Small? Maybe compared to a LeSabre, but it's actually very big for this class, 14.8 cu ft. For comparison:
Infiniti G35: 15 cu ft.
Volvo S60: 13.9 cu. ft.
Audi A4: 13.4 cu.ft.
MB C class: 12.2 cu.ft.
BMW 3 Series: 10.7 cu.ft.
Lexus IS300: 10.1 cu. ft.

I haven't tried it, but it seems like 2 golf bags would fit no problem. Maybe 3

Haven't drivin it in snow yet, but I'm not worried, being FWD with traction & stability control. And the fact that it's made in country with plenty of snow
• lockielockie Member Posts: 8
Sloanesq,

The trunk is actually pretty large. I would guess you could fit 3 to 4 bags in the trunk. I only carry mine but it is pretty large (double strap with telescoping stand). The only trick you would probably have to take your woods out of the 3 inner most bags. The very rear of the trunk has an indentation for a panel the accesses the right rear taillight. This allows my bag to fit with all clubs in place. If you fold the seats done you could carry all sorts of stuff. I haul radio controlled airplanes and they have wingspans over 6ft. I work for a company that gets GM S plan. This is one of the reasons I got my ARC. The Arcs and Vectors haven't been out long enough to see snow yet so I can't help you there. Plenty of the linears have see the snow. I did go with the Arc because I didn't think the Vector wheels would deal well with snow and I didn't want two sets of wheels.

Good Luck

Is there something I have to do turn turn on the CD text? I just burned a couple CD's using Roxio and if I play them on my computer the Artist and Title pop right up (Windows Media Player) but they don't come up in the car.
• tgp1810tgp1810 Member Posts: 112
You have to make sure to select the write CD-Text option. When Roxio (or any other cd creation software) writes a cd, they make a addition to the cd.ini (I could be wrong on the name) file in Windows. This stores information about the CD including artist and track names. So when you play a CD in the computer, it doesn't read this information off the CD, rather from the Windows file.
• richn2richn2 Member Posts: 44
the kind people that had replied to my question regarding trunk space.
• danncasdanncas Member Posts: 24
I would imagine that it would be good in snow. I will be getting mine in the winter and not worried.
I live on a big hill and I have a rear drive Mercedes now. It goes up the hill, a little spinning but it goes fine. Neighbors amazed. Good tracton control Plus good tire make a big difference

I paid $30,500 for my vector with metallic paint, sunroof and heated seats (before tax etc, but including delivery). I had a saab loyalty discount ($500) and of course the $3500 incentive. How does this deal sound to you guys? Thanks.

Can I ask what part of the country you're in?
I'm in the Bay Area and I haven't been able to get a dealer to budge on MSRP for the Vector.

Thanks.

We've talked several times about Saab's continued delay of the automatic door locking software update. I'm pleased to announce that I got my Linear updated last Friday and it works very well. I also had my long awaited OnStar package installed during the same visit.

The local dealer treats me very well. I drove a 2003 9-3 convertible while they updated my car, then got mine back with a fresh hand wash and a complimentary full tank of gas.

indeed you can, I'm in South Carolina. I think the fact that the car I bought is the dealer's last 2003 model before the 2004s come in might have helped.
• pfgeniuspfgenius Member Posts: 7
I have a bunch of questions for you.

How do you like the Vector? I have test driven one briefly and loved it, but every salesmen has tried to steer me away telling me the ride is too rough and the tires make a lot of road noise at high speeds, your thoughts on this?

Also, I haven't read anything about production of 2004 models already, where did you get this info.

And finally, any major upgrades on 2004 models that i should wait for?

Thanks again.
• kretch41kretch41 Member Posts: 13
pfgenius, I have a Vector with 17" wheels. I drove an Arc(16") and couldn't really tell that much of a difference between the two. I wouldn't say that the Vector ride is harsh.
As for the rode noise, I think the car is pretty quiet. The only complaint is when the roof is open, the wind noise is sometimes a bit excessive.
• kopfschuhkopfschuh Member Posts: 11
I haven't taken delivery of mine yet, so I can't necessarily comment on the severity of these issues, but I can say that it largely depends on what you're lookin for in the car. I personally couldn't resist the extra performance one gains from the stiffer suspension, but others might simply find it too rough. The arc certainly performs very well indeed so you're not sacrificing too much in that respect. If you want a car for performance, I think the noise etc. won't be an issue, but if you just want a comfortable everyday driver that has some go to it, the arc is probably a better bet. Just my $.02 Hope it helps!

you mentioned that your taking delivery of your Vector overseas...I'm in the same shoe; I ordered mine in Canada and taking delivery in Germany. Now I'm just wondering if the warranty would work in Europe, did you ask your dealer??? and also in Europe the Vector is actually called the Aero isn't going to be a problem warranty wise???

I've heard rumors of an AWD 9-3. Does anyone know any details about whether and when it will be coming? I know Saab's have a reputation for being good in the snow, but as an avid skier (and someone who does not want to put on snow tires) AWD would be a much appreciated feature.
• mrblonde49mrblonde49 Member Posts: 626
You may be thinking of the 9-2, which should be out next year. It's a re-badged Impreza WRX. I have heard nothing about an AWD 9-3 yet

2004's will not be out until September/October.

Actually, I think it is. You know you can sell them in the spring & summer. How do you sell them in the fall? Introduce a brand new model that has people drooling

about the warranty. The warranty is go overseas.
But it is not deducted from you USA. warranty. The USA warranty does not start until you pick up the car in the USA. are in your case Canada.

Go to carsdirect.com and build one. I inputed zip code 94103 and their base price comes up with $3370 off msrp.

I'd use that as a bargaining tool.

Good Luck.

Buying my first new car and I want the Saab 9-3 Vector. I posted earlier that I can't seem to get dealers in the Bay Area to budge on MSRP.

Can anyone offer some advice on haggling down the price.

Greatly Appreciated.
• tangertanger Member Posts: 4
No way you should pay MSRP... check with Carsdirect and get a price quote. Then again, I imagine that the Bay Area is different then the midwest, but still, I was able to get my Vector well below TMV - don't forget to mention the 3500 dollar cash rebate (unless you're financing).
• ptrekkerptrekker Member Posts: 51
According to Carsdirect, 9-3 Vector going for almost $2000 under invoice. http://www.carsdirect.com/build/options_referral?zipcode=94132&am- p;am- p;acode=USB30SBC031C0&restore=false

I would find another dealer
• gbriankgbriank Member Posts: 220
The price you are seeing on Cars Direct website is the MSRP-$3500 cash incentive back.

Bay Area person, check with a dealer in another Cali town. San Fran dealers are KNOWN for being stingy on price (even the old 9-3's), but they have good service. See if a dealer in LA or Portland would be willing to budge. If not, drop me a line and i'll get you connected up with my local dealer. Buy through them and they'll ship to ya!

Does anyone have the GM Supplier Discount price listings?
• kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,412
If you check KBB, you can configure the car anyway you want, and it will give you invoice price. That is the same as the GM supplier price, from which you subtract any rebates, dealer cash incentives, etc., to arrive at final price. The most recent incentives I've heard are $2500 on linear, $3000 on Arc, and $3500 on vector.

Employee discount is invoice, not Supplier.... Also, discounts on the packages vary based upon Employee/Supplier discount.
• tgp1810tgp1810 Member Posts: 112
1. Employee Program Price = Dealer Invoice amount less Dealer Reserve, Expense Reserve & less Supplemental Advertising (if applicable). Amount is equal to "dealer net"

2. Supplier Program Price = Dealer Invoice amount less Supplemental Advertising (if applicable). Amount is equal to "dealer invoice"

The supplier program is the dealer invoice price. I have a listing of the current prices from Saab posted at http://mywebpages.comcast.net/tgp1810/saabprices . You will have to right click and choose save as and open in Microsoft Word. It does not include the recient price increases.

Well, I finally took the plunge today and bought a beautiful Black 9-3 Arc w/Sentronic automatic, sunroof, heated seats, and touring package.

MSRP was $34,660. Invoice was $32,468. My price was $30,100. The GM "manufacturer to dealer" cash incentive of $3,000 on the Arc made this deal a reality.

Most painless car buying experience in recent memory. Dealership staff very easy going, no high pressure, no BS, motivated to sell. I had all the info I needed from Edmunds, KBB, etc. and I dealt with the sales manager.

Used the Saab web site to email the dealership. Told them exactly what options I wanted and color preferences. Said I was pre-approved by my credit union (3.25 APR for 60 mos) and mentioned I was ready to buy. Message included my purchase offer of $30,600.

Saab sales manager called the next day mentioned they've been selling Arcs and Vectors at MSRP. Although he didn't have my color in stock he found one at port in Georgia, and offered it for $31,405. I countered with $31,000 and they accepted over the phone.

I drove to dealer the next day to meet sales mgr and he showed me two Arcs that had just come off the truck. One was silver, the other black. While discussing the time required to get my color in from port, he offered the black Arc in-stock for $30,100 and I was sold.
• needashaveneedashave Member Posts: 91
I also have the black ARC with the same options and our deals are comparable. Hope you are enjoying yours as much as I am mine. I have the gray leather, what about you? Now that my car has over 2000 mile on it, it seems to perform better than when I picked it up...mostly from an acceleration. The 9-3 takes about a day or two to get used to. Now that I have the seat adjustments dialed in, this car is very comfortable and very spacious for its class. I was orginally leaning toward a 325 but am glad I chose the larger sized Saab. Best of luck and happy motoring.

I am interested in buying an 9-3 Arc. I see from some of the posts that there is a $3,500 incentive. Is that in lieu of the 0% financing or can you get both? What should I be paying for an Arc, 6-speed with touring package, heated seats and green metallic paint, if I am going with the 0% financing? I live in NJ and want to buy this week. Thanks for any input.
• tgp1810tgp1810 Member Posts: 112
The incentives are:
Linear $2500
Arc $3000
Vector $3500

To the best of my knowledge, you are able to only choose the 0% financing or the cash rebate.
• kretch41kretch41 Member Posts: 13
Just my two cents, but I'd take the cashback. You usually save more $ plus you are getting money back upfront as opposed to several years.
I have a Vector, 6spd with everything but touring. I got it for 29,500 using cashback.
You'll love driving the 6spd. Good luck.
• dac93dac93 Member Posts: 3
Needashave, Thanks for the advice and kind words. I opted for the Parchment leather interior color. I know you're probably thinking too light and harder to keep clean, but I really liked it especially the contrast with the poplar wood trim and black interior trim pieces.

Guess I'll have to take extra care with it, but that's OK. I haven't had a car that needed extra attention for a long time. By the way, everyone I talk to says "A black car, you'll have to keep it washed all the time!" Perhaps, but you know it just looks good in jet black. Besides, my wife insisted I get a color different from her silver Honda CR-V.

I noticed you're in Illinois; we're moving to Southern Illinois next month. Any experience with a local dealer service department?

Take care.
• nojalopynojalopy Member Posts: 13
A quick calculation can help determine the value of 0%. Determine payment at 0% vs. payment at "market" interest -- should be less than 4% with decent credit. Multiply difference by number of months of loan. Ignoring time value of money, compare to cashback incentive. The more you borrow, the more the 0% is worth.

BTW, love my 9-3 Arc. About 1200 miles, babied so far. Interesting that the only engine break in called for is keep it below 5000 rpm for first 1500 mi. Not *too* hard to do if you don't really goose it.
