Ya, we collect sales tax based on where the car will be registered. If you are out of state and paying cash no lien then we just have you sign an out of state tax affidavit which states the car will be leaving the state within 10 days and taxes will be payed to the home state.

Can anyone explain this line from the story to me:

The problem is, they didn't realize that a $10 payment bump over a 5-year loan nets an extra $1k in profit for the dealership.

    Now, I'm not mathematician, but just how does $10 x 60 payments = $1k???

$10 Bump in a monthly payment to means equals $500...

Your killing me today :P

You know what I mean. The rest of it goes to interest. On average if i bump someone $10 I get $500 more in gross. The 100 goes to interest.

It is a good thing I have you guys to keep me in line. :shades:

I guess it could be just an error in the article. Or the author still understands so little.

Ok, GP. Repeat after me: 1+1=2, 2+2=4, 4+4=8.
    Now some multiplication: 1x1= 1 2x2=4, 4x4=16
    Now some binary math 1+1=0 0+1=1, 0+0=0
    Any questions?

Nope, it equals 0 and you carry the 1.

I'm gonna have to agree with explorerx4 on this one.

Let's do it this way .. express numbers as 4 digits.

So, in our normal decimal system, the number two is 0002.

In binary, it would be 0010

    Right most position = 1
Next character to the left = 2
Next character to the left = 4
Next character to the left = 8

    So, the number 6 is represented as 0110 (0x8 + 1x4 + 1x2 + 0x1).

Let's not even get into octal and hex code ....
  • mackabeemackabee Member Posts: 4,709
That is correct, but in my example 1+1 = 0 and you carry a one. Sure we can get into octal and hex code. I love challenges.

Just in case you need the circumference of your tires in base 8 here are the first few digits of π: 3.980456933354547594437410241132... :P

** EDIT ** The above number is WRONG! Obviously, the site I got it from has a very buggy program. The error should have jumped right out at me. Do you see it?

What are you all tired of the grammar pet peeve deal and now are going to branch out to mathematics? :D
  • mattandimattandi Member Posts: 588
Well, computers speak in binary, and they are fluent in hexadecimal and other bizarre numerical languages. They are adept at translating some serious gobbledegook into plain language that we sometimes understand, excluding complicated lease arrangements of course. So that's the internet way.

Customers and salespersons typically talk in terms of lowest possible price and payments, and highest possible doc fees and gross with a smattering of horse power and torque. Usually nothing more advanced than simple arithmatic, excluding complicated lease arrangements of course. So that's the traditional way.

    So, it kinda fits. ;)

No, it's not. Look up binary numbers and just use 3 or 4 digits if you like. 011 is decimal 3, so using this number let's add three and two binary and see what comes up.
    1
    011
    + 010
    --------
    101= decimal 5, we added 1+1 = 0 and carried the 1.

Next lesson later today when we will go into hexadecimal.\

Well, I think you missed the point of my post, which was if you "carry" the one it gets deposited somewhere it does not just disappear. Hence binary 1+1 = 10 (not 0) and decimal 5 + 5 = 10 (not 0).

You can't have an 8 either!! Base 8 has 8 digits, 0-7. 10 would represent the decimal number 8, of course.

Better pay up... there is no 8 in base 8, either... as Pat stated..

But, the 9 came first in that string of numbers (you can look it up), so I still say I deserve a Gold Star!!

Besides.. none of you MIT graduates came up with an answer... someone had to step in...

Also... if GP ever gets the F&I job, I know where I'm buying my next car.. I might come out far enough ahead to take a European vacation! ;)
