Here's a question you might be able to answer (if the info is on the CD that is still working for you)
I am having trouble getting my hands on the cd...the site is not a
secure site, yet they want me to use a credit card...I don't think so!
Is it possible to retrofit the metal halide head lights in a Murano
that came with the regular ones? I don't care if I have to lose the adjustable
height feature.
I'll try reading the CD once again. The crack is getting bigger and I expect it will eventually turn the disc into shrapnel.
So far, I haven't received the promised replacement.
Powering both the low-beam wire and the high-beam wire simultaneously seems a little unusual for conventional headlamps featuring a single bulb. The last several cars I owned would unpower the low-beam wire when the high-beam wire was powered, such that only one filament was on at a time.
The HID transformer is part of the headlamp assembly, and not a separate unit under the hood somewhere. That makes the HID assembly a more valuable target for theives. For HID lamp operation, the low-beam wire is used to energize the HID lamp itself, and the high-beam wire is apparently used to drive up a mechanical shutter (via a solonoid). The manual isn't 100% clear on what this shutter looks like. Heck, the translation is so poor it might be the manual for a digital camera. ;-)
So in answer to the original post, the official service manual implies that the only difference between the conventional headlamps and the HID lamps is the complete headlamp assembly. The computers, voltage levels, connectors, and wiring harness all appear to be identical.
You're a God-send.

Although I liked my test drive of the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander the Murano just did it for me. (Oh, and by the way, Honda and Toyota sales people are way too arrogent in my opinion).
On January 23rd I traded in my 2001 F-150 4WD Super Crew for the following: SL AWD, Sheer Silver with Cold Package, Leather, Sun Roof, Cargo Area, Splash, Carpeted Floor Mats, Premium Package, MSRP $34,880, TMV $35,043, what I paid $33,600 PLUS 4.19% interest from Bank One...sweet.
I LOVE THIS RIDE!
the sunroof deflector installed. I've had a history of noisy deflectors on cars and didn't want to have another noisy deflector. Please let me know if you have one and if it seems to help and not be too noisy. Usually depends on the aerodynamics of the vehicle. Also, has anyone seen a Murano with the black pushbar on the front? They are priced at $195 but thats cheaper then having a front bumper repaired; don't plan on having any incidents but one never knows! BTW: the all season floor mats are great!Cargo mat is nice also.
Did you get the 3M stuff thru the dealer? I'd like to have the door trim also to protect from dings. How long did they say the protection on the hood and door handles would last?
Steve, Host
I would like to put larger size tires on the Murano. Does any know what size I can put on the original rims? I am thinking of putting in either 265/55X18 or 255/60X18. Do you think that it will be a problem on fitting the rims? I like the wider looks and also having better stopping distance.
Thanks

The RX300 pros: timeless design
Lexus nameplate and warranty
Luxerious interior
Dependibility and realiability
Resale ( which really helped when
I traded it ).
cons: Expensive parts and service
city mileage was poor (16)
although got 23 hwy.
every other suv on the road is
an RX300 ( here anyway )
I did not think the front seats
were very comfortable.
adequate but boring performance
Murano pros: For almost the same money I have added VDC, AWD, 25 more HP, Nav system, much nicer sounding stereo, adjustable foot pedals, Hid headlights, not to mention aggressive styling and better performance. I love the comfortable seats and driving position.
cons: first year jitters
cargo room not as much as in the RX
warranty should be better
no roadside assistence at all
dealers don't know much about vechicle
which has not been my experience w/ Lexus.
So far I am thrilled with it, it was a very difficult descision for me because I have been a pretty loyal Toyota/Lexus consumer although we have had 2 Maximas and an Altima that my wife primarily drove. I have owned three new 4-Runners, a Camry, a Tercel, and still own an 2001 auburn sky pearl IS300. ( which is awesome, shoulda waited for the manual tranny though ).
I really wanted to like the new 4-Runner but I was really dissapointed, I thought the interior was awful, but I'm partial to the 96'-2002' model yrs. By the way, my last 4-runner I purchased was a 98'SR5 with cloth that I paid $34000 for. After comparing that to the Murano I feel that the 4-Runner might have been a little overpriced ( OUCH ) .
I can also tell you all that I test drove the Volvo AWD70, the BMW X5, Audi AWD quattro, Saab sportwagon, trailblazer ( yuck), Jaquar AWD x-type, and countless others. I've been shopping for a long time and the Murano snuck up on me. I didn't know a whole lot about it until after my first test drive, I was very impressed especially since I ended up spending alot less then originally planned especially for all the goodies I ended up with. I was looking at close to $50000 with Nav on most of the aforementioned vechicles. note: I tried to test drive an MDX but the salesguy was so arrogant and put out that I just left. He was disgusting. I guess maybe I shouldn't have been wearing sweats haha.
In closing, there are always different points of views and opinions and no two people can agree on everything, but thats what makes these forums so much fun.
But it was just *hard* to see one on the road. I was waiting in line for lunch and the guy behind me sees me checking it out and says "What was that?" poor guy. Had to listen to me go on and on for about 10 mintues. Made the burrito line go quicker tho!
So I went across the street to the Nissan dealership when I saw a large billboard hanging over it announcing the arrival of the new Murano. A salesman attacked me as I was exiting my vehicle, but I managed to force my way past him into the showroom where a new Murano was displayed. The interior was cabernet leather, outside was black if I recall. Thought the car was nice, but I hated the color, and it was all they had. After the salesman hounded me for a few minutes I left, I hate salespeople who act like that. Asked me, "So, you gonna buy a car today?" To which I replied, "I don't know, I haven't even looked at one yet!"
So, later that week I went to Toyota, actually several dealerships. Even managed to sneak in the back door of one and actually get into the showroom before being attacked again, but this guy was nicer. I spent over two hours driving and viewing/discussing the new 4-Runner and the Highlander. Liked the Highlander better for me, it was OK, but I didn't dream about it, no passion for it.
So, I went to Honda. I even have a friend that is a Honda dealer. Saw the Pilot. Did not drive it. Where the interior was nice, the outside left something to be desired. There was no style, it was predictable/mundane. It was also huge, three rows of seats... and I am single.
So, I went on vacation to Florida. I was staying with a friend who was also driving down from Atlanta. I had a several hour head start on him and I knew I was going to wait at his house for a while, so I stopped at the local Nissan dealer to kill some time. Thought maybe I needed to look at that Murano again.
Nice and informative saesperson talked to me, pointed out some of the great features on the vehicle, I was impressed. After about 45 minutes I left with a brochure. I felt a little different about the vehicle, a little more intrigued. Didn't drive it though as it was the only one they had and it was on the showroom floor.
Friend showed up. he had been hounding me about getting a new car. I threw the brochure at him and said "Happy now? I looked... See?". He said, "Hey wait a minute, I want to see this, Let's drive back over after dinner and ..." Off we went. He said to the salesman "You guys really have something here!" My friend likes luxury vehicles currently owning BOTH a Jagura XK8 convertible and a 2003 Range Rover (the big one).
The next day I went shopping in another town. Drove by the Nissan dealer and on the curb was a Murano. Got a salesman and drove an SL 2WD version. I think it was the CVT that got me. I left thinking, "Now this car is cool".
A week later, on the way back to Atlanta, I stopped at another dealer and looked at an SL and SE. The SE definately drove better/tighter/was more responsive to me. When has asked if I wanted to adjust the accelerator and brake pedals I just looked at him with a blank stare. Then I started noticing all the great luxury features on the vehicle.
Five more dealerships, two attempts to make a purchase to no avail, and one call to ArcayAxmay in Greenville SC for a quote later...
I ordered it, should be here in late April/Early May. Got it just the way I wanted it. Right color, options, everything.
I think the vehicle is underpriced for the value I feel it has. Especially when you compare the car to the Pilot and the 4-Runner. I am afraid Nissan will raise the price.
The styling, the amenities, the fit and finish IMO are expceptional./ Unfortunately in Atlanta the dealer network does not add any value to the purchasing experience. With, of course, the exception of the dealer from which I ordered the vehicle.
I think Nissan is producing a new class of vehicle, new ideas, new and bold styling. A new generation. It will be interesting to see if the percieved value increases in the next few years and Nissan is viewed like Lexus and Acura.
I never thought about a Nissan. I did see value and quality, and of course the style stole my heart.
Was about to buy from the dealership in town for $400 over invoice, but they were not friendly and asked me to keep walking back and forth from the salesman's rickety desk to the high counter to explain my invoice numbers to the sales manager. Finally just walked out after the third trip up.
The next day I offered $500 to the dealership where I bought my last car, which is about 45 minutes away. A month ago, they wanted $1000 over invoice. They gave me a much better deal on the trade in than the other dealers I considered, and didn't charge for the cold package (apparently found one of the early deliveries which did not have that charge to dealers). Additionally, they were polite, friendly and professional, and the sales manager came over to greet me personally to discuss the car. I ended up paying the ridiculous $300 advertising fee (as wanted by all of the dealers I met), but they upped the trade-in a hundred bucks when I complained. Sure, I could have negotiated a better deal overall, but I wanted to finally get the ball rolling.
Went with black interior/exterior, which is a lot of black, but wanted to try it. I think they could have added some more accent gray or silver inside, but not bad. Appears that black is the color of choice for the Infiniti FX35/45 (similar in many ways to the Murano) in their commercials as well. Wish the Murano had some other dark color options for the exterior, such as the "brick" color for the new 350Z.
Still don't like the front grill that much, and am considering painting it to match the exterior, leaving the Nissan logo in chrome. I'll wait till spring to make that decision. It's hard to tell from the original concept drawings what the designer intended for the grill.
Also not fond of the main instrument pod behind the wheel. The concept drawings are sleek and futuristic in design, but I believe the production vehicle would have looked better with a sportier instrument panel similar to the 350Z. I think the same thing applies to the center control console. The current design may just seem gimmicky over time. I'll probably get used to the overly deep dash, and who knows, it may prove functional.
I had a hard time deciding on the Murano, mostly because of price and styling. Initially, the design really grabbed my attention when I saw pictures of it, but so many people (men and women) told me they really didn't like it, it slowed me down. I know I shouldn't be swayed by other people's tastes in cars, but I expected reactions in the range of "It's okay" to "Sweet!", not "Ugly!" Maybe it's just too radical a design for an SUV for some people. Luckily, a few customers at the dealership approved of it that day, which made moving the pen across the dotted line a little smoother.
I think they should jazz up the commercials. Antique and book shopping ads do not sell this vehicle. There's much more going for the Murano than that and I think they're actually hurting themselves with another entire market.
Personally, I was looking for a sporty 5-door with cargo room, and the Murano does a good job of meeting that criteria. What really sold me was the performance and handling specs for this size vehicle. I'm not fond of the omnipresent boxy, unwieldy SUVs out there, the Vibe/Matrix has an overly high-revving engine and the interior finish seems targeted to kids, the Focus, Protege5, etc. were too small, underpowered or not sporty enough, and the Suburus are too wagony for my taste. The FX35/45 is more sporty than the Murano, but with less cargo space, worse gas mileage, and at least $4K more.
I've not been out driving much yet, but my city mileage so far is nearly half of the posted 20 MPG. Hope it fares better on the highway.
A lot of snow coming down here again today, so may be a good test for the AWD.
Heard the popping noise in the back when going over bumps some people have mentioned, but it seems to have gone away after I opened compartments in the wheelwell area to put some items inside, as well as putting a heavy case in back. But what may have done the trick was stowing the rear middle seatbelt clips (two parts) in the ceiling as described in the manual. Too soon to tell. Haven't noticed any other noises yet.
I'll keep you posted on my experiences, and hope to hear from others on their experiences with their new Muranos as well.
Have had mine for 2 weeks now and actually like the car more as time goes on. I agree the CVT transmission is remarkable. Getting 21.5 mpg 50/50 city highway using 87 octane. You have to not be a leadfoot to do this but nice to have the power when you need to merge etc. Pure highway I am sure would be 24 or more. Actually got almost 28 in a very short 20 mile trip on Interstate.
I've also heard what people describe as "popping" noise somewhere in the back of the vehicle when hitting bumps. Never really bothered me though. I figured it was the pull cover or spare tire cover. It actually sounds like the seat belt assembly sometimes.
Anyways, I love mine so far. It's my first Japanese ride coming from years of Ford SUV's and trucks.
Once the car was in I came in and when they mobbed me at the door I said "Is *Steve* here today?" If he is, great, you just talk to Steve... If he isn't, you get to look around and not deal with being "chatted up" by the men in black... as we call them.
I would always call the dealer first and get a name of someone... that way you seem "taken" when you show up at the lot.
I feel bad for my *Steve* tho because I'll be buying the car through a broker (price UNDER invoice) it's just much less stress that way.
Steve, Host
According to the rep I'm talking to at Nissan Consumer Affairs, he says they have pulled it from the table as an option for any of the Model Year 2003 Muranos
There is apparently some issues with the cabling from the head unit and Nissan hasn't approved any of the potential fixes yet. The rep said they are are being told as of now that none of the Muranos will be able to use the "SAT" button on the radio, and Nissan is developing some type of official explanation to filter down to the dealers.
I asked him if there was any projected ETA for a fix (model yr '04, etc) and he said that until the quality issue with the cabling is resolved, only an aftermarket kit would allow you to get XM or Sirius.
Big let-down...

I love this vehicle and can't wait until it arrives but it is really beginning to irritate me that I am paying almost $500.00 for the Cold Package Option and according to several posts I've read here people who have ordered the Leather have received heated seats at no charge.
Can anyone who received heated seats at no charge with their Leather Option tell me if that also included heated mirrors?
If a dealer is not charged for the cold package can they legally charge the buyer?
If those who received heated seats with their leather package did not get heated mirrors than that would mean I am about to pay $500.00 for heated mirrors, if they got heated mirrors as well than I am getting ripped off for $500.00 for the privilege of ordering my vehicle exactly as I want it.
In either case it is making me reconsider purchasing from CarMax.
I picked mine up today and the cold package was listed on the sticker as $499, but the invoice the dealer had for the car which usually comes in before the car did not list the cold package. Since they worked off that, there was no charge to me. I was hoping that they wouldn't look at the window sticker. I think that other than the cars that are out there and even those I think might have been re-stickered, you might have to pay for it.
Since they had quoted me a price without the additional charge, they said they wouldn't charge me for the cold package on the vehicle they would get from another dealer. So I assume the one they found didn't have the charge on the invoice either.
My feeling is, if the charge isn't on the invoice, the dealer didn't pay for it, so you shouldn't either. Otherwise, this is pure profit for the dealer.
If the rear center seat belt is not in use, try securing both clips parts to the holder in the ceiling as described on page 1-29 in the manual.
This seems to have eliminated the popping noise in mine.
Check out this e-mail I just got from Nissan NA consumer affairs:
"Dear DKlanecky,
The Satellite radio option is not available for the Murano at this time and the timing remains to be decided. If you purchase a Murano now, or in the near future, the Satellite radio will not be available to be installed at a later date in the vehicle using the SAT button.
If you decide to get the Murano and want to go with an aftermarket satellite radio, the aftermarket will not be able to be installed using the SAT button. Nissan has made a decision to pre-wire the Murano, but timing has
not yet been finalized. I hope this information helps."
Received 2/5/2003
This combined with post 1008 above makes me wonder who does know what at NNA!!!!!!
Does anyone with a charcoal leather interior have any lighter gray below the window line or on the upper dash? Does the black exterior color affect the color they use in the interior trim?
Thanks.
Made my deal last night for Polished Pewter/Charcoal Leather SL with AWD, Fully Loaded incl NAV, Splash Guards, Cargo Mat, & Floor Mats... got it for $34,839 - total of 1200 over dealer invoice. It includes the Cold Pkg for no charge, as it was one of the early shipment.
I had gotten a quote via my credit union auto broker for 1500 over invoice in Freehold for a Silver one, but I was stuck on pewter... so I took that quote to Acme Nissan of South Brunswick and they had no problem beating it by 300.
This dealer was very no pressure... a very positive experience. No strong-arming for anything... aftermarket access, warranty..nothing. They had 24 Murano's in stock and have another 40 on order... they appear to have one of the best stock levels. The only other dealer with that many was down in Keyport. The sales mgr told me the pressure from Nissan to put more on the road is getting more intense.
I take delivery next weekend and can't wait! I'll get some pics together and put them up once I get it

Hit the "New Car Pricing" button and your on your way.
I've been able to get the listed carmax "MSRP" price (which doesn't give you any real option /package information) by building my own configurations at this site until they do match.
I find it's become one of my first places to visit when pricing cars.
also has info about invoice/MSRP prices of the different models(SE 2wd, SE 4wd etc...) and the various options packages. Just look under the prices and research tab.
Hope this helps
Also, I wish I could get Nav and sunroof without leather. Possible?
The noise is not the seatbelt(s). I have heard the sound with, and without, the seatbelts buckled, loose, and stowed in their respective clips (two on the side, one on the headliner). It might be some part of the internal seatbelt retractor, but it isn't the part you can see.
My best guess is that it is a wiring harness or something like that, on the inside of a trim panel, that is loose and knocks against a panel. I suspect they're going to take off all the internal trim to locate it, which is why they want it for a couple of days. The dealer has been talking to Nissan on the phone.
If/when we find out what it is, I'll post here.
I'm in Oregon.
