Would I encounter lots of problems purchasing a G35x from NJ and drive it in New York? I will be living in upstate NY but is it possible to register the car to an NJ address to enjoy its lower sales tax, while getting NY insurance for driving in NY?
Thank you,
I think this is a tricky thing to do, and obviously not the right thing to do. If you're going to use an NJ address, might as well insure at that NJ address and drive an out-of-state car. Hopefully the NJ address is of someone close to you who's settled there, since all renewals will come to that address (some of which you may be able to handle online).
When you purchase, the dealership will also want your drivers' license info, so that's going to be a complication as well. It may be a lot easier to pay the additional 2% tax, and see if the NJ dealer will help you get NY tags to save trips to Motor Vehicles.
I'll also be posting my NJ buying experience (positive), since I recently completed a purchase. I live in NJ, of course.
Catch# 1: Manufactured Jan 2005. Sticker base MSRP = 32,500, Edmunds base MSRP = 32,800. Dealer mentioned two price increases on MSRP this year. When I called Infiniti ahead of time, they said no change to MSRP this year. Maybe something's posted about this. (No change to features, I'm told). [Edit to add: there's some mention of mid-year price increases on the G35 general forum]
Catch# 2: I waited over 2 weeks for this car. Over 200 miles on car when I picked it up. Possibly due to its transportation to multiple dealers for the transfer. Not very comforting, but it's what I wanted and couldn't pass up for that reason. I've to look at it as a convenience to get past 1,000 miles.
Since picking it up, I've made a few trips, and it's at 850 miles now - in under a week. About 200 miles Local + 450 miles freeway driving, I'm at a 22 mpg average at present.
I'm thrilled with the car, despite its few quirks. As someone else mentioned, the automatic window buttons are awkwardly low on the driver's side door. The CD changer is somewhat clanky.
I've yet to learn the navigation system fully - I set it to drive back home from hundreds of miles away, and near my home, it asked me to turn onto a street away from my home. The voice feature is neat, except on expressways, it comes on at every major intersection or exit and says something like "continue on I-95 for 11 miles" - I suppose the next major exit, when I have over 100 miles left to go on I-95 to the destination. This is annoying when you're playing a CD and it fades the music out for a useless alert. But the alerts to turn left, right etc on local roads ahead of time are very helpful. The joystick for moving through the navigation menu is really clumsy, even for someone who is used to gaming.
But - I love the car - so I'll get used to the Navigation system. It may be a better idea for others to look to off-market Navigation systems, even if they aren't covered by Infiniti warranty. At $1,800+ invoice, it doesn't deliver.
Their Offer:
List Price 37,080 for:
- G35x AWD
- Premium package C
- Rosewood Trim
- Matts, Trunk, stuff
- Destination Charge
Selling Price: 34,400
Ive been in the market for a few months
Actually, I think edmunds IS WRONG! There is 1000 rebate on ALL G35 versions. I have CR print out and know what dealer is getting and what exact holdback is.
THe dealers are smoking crack. DO not let them tell you there is NO $1000 incentive. Call infiniti up and ask them too! The incentive in national. Tell the dealer you will go to another dealer with your checkbook in hand.
I am going to the dealer tomorrow. Lets see what they say. I am not going to put up with any shi.. from dealer and will personally tell them this upfront. There are many g35x's on lot and THEY ARE NOT MOVING!. I will offer them 500 above actuall dealer cost.
$500 above wholesale dealer cost is probably going to be pretty tricky, that would be digging $400 into holdback and dealers usually get angry when you mention that.
On Monday I'm going to offer this to the other Infiniti dealer for a G35x w/Premium C:
Total Dealer Invoice: $30,777
Wholesale Price: $28,846 (do your math and you'll know the holdback) w/Premium C = $31,862
My offer $31,862 + $1,593.10 (5% profit) = $33,455 which I will up to $33,800 (basically listed invoice w/options, it is a luxury car after all) which would be a 5.8% profit. I doubt most dealers would reject that. My payment in MN will be $430 w/tax with the agressive money factor and high residual they have right now...
That is what I was thinking, but still they are not cheap.
I have also spoken to several dealership and they have all confirmed it.
That being said - 2 of the 3 dealerships I have spoken to have agreeded to sell the vechical at invoice cost. They are making some kick back.
G35x AWD, Premuim C, Automatic, Trunk Mat and mud gaurds, Destination Charge
Sell Price: $33,400, MRSP: 37,100
The way we would like it equipped (Premium B package, sport suspension), the MSRP is $35,710 and invoice is $32,660.
But, when browsing yesterday, they did not have these options in the color (Lakeshore Slate) we liked. We have been non-committal, letting the salesperson know we were in the research phase, which we were.
So, knowing the numbers above and that they do not have the car, how should we proceed?
Can I get close to invoice price if they have to order the car?
Should I search other dealers? Note, there are no other dealers within an hour drive.
Should I go back in and speak with the salesman? Or should I e-mail him?
Thanks.
He at first said the incentives are proprietary info. I said that was bs. If you want people to buy your cars, you better do better job of posting incentives.
He confirmed that the incentive is on RWD.
I went to dealer and had big fus with them. They too only acknowledged the RWD version has 1000 incentive.
I told them I will be back when they are more anxious to sell at price lower than 33,500 for AWD version premium C and splash guards.
If anyone is looking to buy, I wouldnt until they actually have incentive on AWD version 2005, which they will when they try to move them for the 2006 versions
Thanks
Live in Boston, MA.- have been interacting with Quirk, Herb Chambers, and Norwood - all of which were giving me the same price - i.e. Dealer Invoice Pricing.
I can't speak for the coupe or AWD, but there are good deal out there on the sedan.
I would use a combo of in-person to start, phone and then email. Run the show. Be pleasant yet firm in what you want. Make sure you let them know you are contacting multiple dealerships. End of the month is a great time to buy. They are anxious to get '05's off the lot too.
any ideas how much I can knock off tht down payment??
- Premium C
- Trunk mat w/ full size spear
- Destination Charge
MSRP: 36,830
Invoice: 33,714
My Price: 33,270
There is a dealer holdback of about $500. For some reason I was able to get the hold back money price back. I thought I was negotiating a price to be at Dealer Cost - when I was in the finance office of the dealership - I asked what the cost was and he showed it to me. I said, "How can you sell this car at a loss of 500?" He said that there is a 500 dealer hold back that they decided to give me to push a car out of the lot. Only in the car business...

Do not negotiate a lease price i.e. "360 per month with 1500 down"
You negotiate the car's selling price. Then you negotiate the money factor (lease equivalent of an interest rate.) From that they determine the monthly and downpayment.
Thus if you want to knock off the 1500 - lower the sell price.
I can't get anyone below invoice like rjb did. I'm still working, I'll let everyone know. This week is key since it's the last week of the month.
Any links or comments are appriciated.
P03 - Premium Package C
U01 - Navigation package
W01 - Rosewood package
T93 - Trunk Mat w/ full size spare
Price Paid - $35,700 w/1.99% 36 month finance. Invoice said $35,544.
Bought at Lynnes Ifiniti. I shopped several dealers in the area, one even gave me a '05 demo car to drive for 2 days.
I am still looking.
ONe dealer refused to offer below invoice on g35x, package C, splash - invoice 33,894 - see my post from yesterday. JERK!
Another dealer, owned by same person, offered same package with 300 below invoice - go figure
a 3RD dealer 30 miles outside city offering 400 bucks below.
Which of last 2 to get deal from if any? How am I doing?
Oh and by the way, CR posts holdback of about 900 bucks on all g35's-
that sounds about right given holdback is usually 2-4% of invoice if I am correct.
The 500 bucks above is bogus. Thats what dealer said to sell the car asap. they still made about 400 bucks!
any thoughts
they will start really pushing these old 2005's soon
I'm looking to buy/finance a G35x with Prem C package (maybe nav).
Here's the price I was quoted:
34,100 (Prem C with trunk mat & splash guards)
35,973 with nav and wood trim (plus above options)
Anybody think I can do better or is this a decent price?
Looks to be 127 dollars over invoice (33,793) or 159 over invoice (w/ nav & wood-35,814).
Would now be a good time to buy (end of month, rebates, incentives) or should I wait until Aug, or even Labor day weekend?
I've a trade in, and looking to put down about 2-3k at signing.
I've also been hearing these "factory holdbacks," "factory to dealer incentives," and "floor plan fees." Thoughts?
Thanks very much for your help.
that, the sunroof and some other minor features vs spending less than 1K
for just the sunroof? How much better is the Bose audio on the G35?
How does it compare to the TL's Panasonic ELS?
I am going to take a CD to the dealership and try both sometime but I would appreciate any feedback.
the 2005 G35 now if the 2006 is going to be out in a couple of months?
what will be the changes and will it be worth waiting for it?
I wish I could have a car for 3 months so I didn't have to to buy one now!
I checked out their website and see a list of cars and prices, but it doesn't show what features the cars have. How will I know whether the prices are under invoice? (Sorry, dumb question!)
34,100 (Prem C with trunk mat & splash guards) is a good deal - you can get them to invoice though. They do have a dealer holdback of about 500 so they will make some money. I think people have to be a bit resonable and allow them to make some money.
I got mine G35x Prem C with trunk mat WITH OUT splash guards for $33,270. I though I was negotiating to dealer invoice - when infact I was driving them to dealer net.

In the end I got what I wanted, G35x, prem c, with trunk mat, no nav. My color is twilight blue with a stone interior (this was my first choice) My price worked out to $33610, give or take $10 (it's complicated, but that's what I figured my cost to be.) The invoice on this car was actually $33557, it was an older build (early 2005) so that helped me get a couple of hundred bucks off.
I leased, with money factor of 0.00113 and a residual of 59%.
The drive home (about 40 minutes) was awesome. Mostly highway, stereo blaring Coldplay all the way. The sound is great, BTW. I'm not a true audiophile, but I can appreciate loud good sound, and this has it.
Now if they start giving out $1000 rebate on the x next month I'll be pissed, but I can't start looking back now, I've got the car I want.
Good luck all, and thanks to everyone for all the good tips. Drive safe. :shades:
Good luck with your car search!
