I'm on Long Island too and just starting to look, thinking there should soon be some good '06 inventory clearing deals before the newly designed 07s come out this spring. Please post the dealer and the deal when you get it. I'm looking for an an '06 MDX Touring w Navi.

I feel a bit foolish putting this question, but I am unsure which is the best way to go. Any help would be welcome and much appreciated.

Deal 1: New '05 Touring...$35,500 with a fair trade in on my vehicle. (This is a must. High mileage car, with significant pay off.) There is a convenience factor, though. The dealer is in Boston - 120 mi away. I travel a lot, so service won't be a big factor. Just a lot of travel, this week, to finish the whole deal - trade, paperwork, etc., since my wife is primary loan/registration name on outgoing vehicle.

Deal 2: '05 Touring w/Nav, 3000 mi. $36,000 with same trade deal. Local Honda dealer, much more convenient for paperwork and they say they can do service when necessary, too.

I might add that I don't really care about the Nav., but I guess it will be nice to have.

    Thoughts??

Try Open Road Acura in Wayne.
  • catchy7catchy7 Member Posts: 2
Quotes seem in the ballpark. Recently pulled trigger on '05 Touring for 34,900 (including destination). Had another quote in same range, and another at 35,300 or so for the '05 Touring. Received quotes of 36,100 for Touring w/DVD. All these were '05s -- not many left.

Re. the Touring w/NAV, I sense that '06s can be had in the 37s, but I don't have a firm feel for that.

Forum was very helpful, so just wanted to chip in w/my experience.
  • rsorganizersorganize Member Posts: 131
Decided to buy the '05 w/Nav. and 3000 mi. They increased their offer on my trade-in, effectively matching the deal on the new Touring. Location/convenience a significant factor. In the end, while Nav was not that important, I thought it was a good deal and the dealer seemed to really try to be fair and make a deal.

Frankly, tired of the travel to dealers and the game-playing/posturing around negotiating the best deal. Too many variables and personalities...too much hassle trying to establish a fair price for my trade.

Feels like a fair deal. Now, I'm ready to get out and enjoy the vehicle.

    Thanks.

Agree w/that. Did most of the price discussion via phone and email, and gave benefit of the doubt/matching right to the first dealer that was willing to offer a price via email that was in the "deal zone." That cut down a lot of legwork and gave me a benchmark vis-a-vis other dealers in the region. Ended up going w/that dealer -- so I effectively rewarded a dealer that was willing to negotiate but without a lot of game-playing.

do you have an invoice number for your deal at Open Road Acura in Wayne? ask if they can match your offer, but need they claim to need info on buyer -- that's you.
any help will be justice to all car buyers.

Good job, makes much sense as once you drove the new one off the lot it would be worth a lot less. The NAV was a good move for resale as all things seemed equal. 3 k is nothing if not some hidden problem. I would call selling dealer and see if history good and call the previous owner to get the skinney. I always research my cars to death.

I am looking at getting a 06 touring with navigation. I am in NYC - What should be the best quote? Is $39.5 a good offer?
  • mdxwannabemdxwannabe Member Posts: 4
How did you make out with your purchase of a 05' MDX Touring w/Nav? I'm in the market to buy one as well and want to get it for invoice minus $1500. With all the 06"s on the lot and the manufacturer offering a $1500 cash to dealer, this doesn't sound like an impossible deal to make. Anyone having luck?

    If you can find one...

During my search, I came across a RI dealer - Inskip - offering '05 Tourings for $34,795. Doesn't seem like a reach, to me, to get one w/Nav. at or below $37,000.

For my part, I was just tired of negotiating over my trade-in. Didn't have the energy to drive to RI and see if they would have matched the trade-ins I was offered elsewhere.

    Good luck!

    Hello All,
I just bought a certified 2003 White MDX w/ Touring RES from Sunnyvale Acura for $27K. They also gave me 50% off on the side steps ($350) and pretty good trade in on my 93 Mitsu Montero. Most dealers would give $2K, they offered $3.
The car was registered in 06/2003 and has 33,000 miles on it.

    Hi folks,

I spent many months on these MDX forums back in 2000/2001 when I took delivery of an '01 Touring/Nav at Acura of Pleasanton here in the Bay Area. I bought it the day after the MDX made its debut, and while I paid MSRP for the vehicle and tons of add-ons, two weeks later all Acura dealers in Northern California were getting $2K over MSRP and had waiting lists. It's now five years later and I'm back.

Last week, my niece who lives in the Sierras, was shopping for a good dependable 4x4, and I made her an offer on my fully loaded, mint condition Touring/Nav with 45K miles on the clock she couldn't refuse, and she didn't. In an attempt to rid myself of new car fever, I'm ready to buy again. After researching and test driving the half-dozen vehicles that were on my list of possibilities, I've decided on another new ('06) Touring/Nav. But this time, I plan to purchase all the add-ons from an Internet site that sells them at significant discounts, install those that I can, and pay the dealer to install those I can't. In other words, I'm shopping for a bare bones '06 Touring Nav.

Does anyone have any idea what '06 Touring/Navs are going for here in the Bay Area? My purchase will be a cash deal.

I just read a post on the Acura MDX forum (not Edmunds) of someone who paid $1,000 below invoice for an '06 Touring w/NAVI at Los Gatos Acura. Hope this helps. :)

Tried to find 2005 MDX as I hate the 2006 Zebra Wood. 06 Touring w/Nav is running $300 over invoice.
I am concerned since this is the last year with this body style.
How badly will trade in value go down once new model is out?
  • bilmatbilmat Member Posts: 53
Thanks, lid. You were right. I found a silver '06 Touring w/Nav for $38,755 and will probably purchase it next week. Just to make sure I have no regrets, I plan to take in the Auto Show in San Jose on Jan. 4th to make sure nothing else on the market rings my 'new car fever' bell.

I'm in Rhode Island and I'm looking for a 2005 MDX Touring with Nav. After contacting many of the dealers in the RI and Mass area, only one has any '05s left over. They're willing to sell it for $37,700, and I have two other dealers that will sell the '06 with the same package for $38,600.
Can anyone give me an opinion as to which way I should go? I was leaning toward the '05, but only if I could get it in the high 26k to low 27k range.

Picked up a black touring with a saddle/ebony interior last monday for $36,617 (including freight) at a Chicago suburb dealer through the internet manager. They basically quoted me edmunds invoice price and stuck to it.

Wanted NAV just for the back-up camera...decided that was too steep a price to pay. I didn't like the zebra pattern wood trim, but hated the very fake cherry burl from the prior years. However, with the new two tone dash, the new trim color has actually has grown on me very quickly.
  • lidlid Member Posts: 10
Wow. That is below invoice! I would buy it for that price!
  • wmquanwmquan Member Posts: 1,817
Congratulations, Bill, you were one of the early buyers.

    Nice gift to your niece!
  • howehowe Member Posts: 22
They should go down to around $36.5 for the '05 w/Nav. That's what I paid. $2K more for an '06 is your call. I would still buy the '05. I believe what you really meant was "high $36K to low $37K?"
  • sl1288sl1288 Member Posts: 58
Oops, didn't catch that. I meant 36-37k. Too bad we couldn't buy them for $27k.

(Below is my original post from Dec. 28th, which was pulled by the moderator because I inadvertently mentioned the name of an individual who sells MDX accessories. Looks like a case of Mea Culpa on my part. In any event, I was advised that I could repost the info if I edited out the person's name. This post originally appeared as #2890.)

Having just given my '01 Touring/Nav to a niece for a Christmas present after 45K miles, I'm about to buy a new '06 Touring/Nav. I wasn't all that fond of the zebra pattern trim either as my eyes have spent five years looking at the wood-like trim of my '01. But like most other things in life, I'm sure I'll get used to the difference six months down the road and won't give it a second thought.

I dealt with the same dealership from which I bought my '01 back in Oct. of 2000, when the MDX first made its debut. With the same add-ons, I'm paying less for the '06 than I did for the '01. No surprise there, since the MDX was an extremely hot item when they were first introduced. Two weeks later, every Acura dealer in the Bay Area had a waiting list and was getting $2K over sticker. That took the sting out of paying list for mine.

Total cost for the '06 Touring/Nav will be $41,030 plus T&L. That breaks down to $38,755 for the Touring/Nav; $719 for the Fender Flairs; $592 for the Running Boards; $404 for the Tailgate Spoiler; and $560 for the Wood Steering Wheel. The prices for the add-ons include installation. Out the door with T&L ($3,590 plus an estimated $500 for the license) the cost will be within a few dollars of $45,120. I could possibly have saved a few bucks had I shopped around more, but I've always received excellent service from this dealership and decided to go with them again. Besides, nothing comes cheap in this part of the country. Typical three-bedroom, 2-bath homes here in the Bay Area go for the better part of a million.

I thought about ordering most of the add-ons from HondaAcuraWorld.com and having a Honda mechanic friend help me install everything but the steering wheel. (Because of the air bag, I'm insisting that it be installed by the dealer.) I showed my mechanic friend the installation instructions I pulled from the Internet for everything except the steering wheel, and he was confident we could install the items in an afternoon. But the difference between doing so and having the dealer install everything was $700. Considering the time and effort it would take for us to perform the installations, coupled with the hassle of waiting around for the items to be delivered, and cutting up and disposing of 50 pounds of cardboard and packing material, $700 almost sounded like chump change. Besides, taking delivery of a "complete" MDX is worth something.

I did, however, order a few items from HondaAcuraWorld.com: All season floor mats, dash meter trim and the cargo cover.

I'll be writing the check and finalizing the deal with the dealership tomorrow and probably pick up my new toy a few days later.

When all is said and done, the '06 will be the same model as my '01, and with identical add-ons. After pulling out and looking at the paperwork from five years ago, the out-the-door cost of the '06 will be $870 less than I paid in Oct. of 2000. That works for me!

P.S. In a post above I mentioned I would be attending the auto show in San Jose before taking the plunge on another MDX. I have since had a change of heart. Even if something other than an MDX "rang my bell" at the auto show, I'm sure that six months from now, after the novelty of driving a different car had worn off, I'd be kicking myself for not having bought another MDX. For my needs, it's as close to perfect as a vehicle can be. Now I can go to the auto show and not be tempted.

(UPDATE: Bought the Touring/Nav today (Thurs.) and should pick it up tomorrow afternoon, after the add-ons are installed. Price paid for the MDX was $38,755. Opted only for four add-ons: Fender Flairs ($719); Tailgate Spoiler ($404); Simulated Wood Steering Wheel ($560); and Running Boards ($592). Price of the add-ons included installation. Total cost of the vehicle came to $41,030. With tax ($3,594.06), License ($329), Doc fee ($45) and the Calfornia Tire Fee ($8.75), I wrote a check for $45,006.81. The moderator said it was OK to name the dealer. It was Acura of Pleasanton.)

I was in your same boat, trying to find a deal on a 05' MDX Touring w/Nav but came up empty. I simply couldn't find one in the greater Los Angeles area. So I shifted gears and sent out faxes to all the Acura dealerships looking for a deal on a new 06' instead, emphasizing that I wanted to lease before the end of December. Well, I got an offer I couldn't refuse—a new 06' MDX Touring w/Nav for $37,500, which included the destination charges. That's $1591 UNDER invoice! I signed the papers yesterday and I pick up the car today. So to answer your question, why buy a year older car when for the same price you can own a new 06? Having said that, you have to find that one dealer who wants to sell the car at a loss for some reason, such as meeting his end of month quotas or something. You have to be patient.

    Here is the deal

    MDX 05 Touring with Navigation
    Dealer Demo with 9000 miles

    33 795 sale price
    tax,title,tags extra
the only other item added was a 129 doc fee.

appears to be a good deal to me.
    thanks

That is an unbelievable deal. Probably the best I have seen any where. I would grab an '06 for that price in a heartbeat. Was the dealer overstocked with '06's? Can't figure out why they would sell at that price.
  • howehowe Member Posts: 22
I bought my '05 MDX Touring with Nav (14 miles on odometer) from Ceritos Acura (greater LA area) for $36.5K in October. That was $2500 under invoice. Would I have bought an '06 for $1K more? Same car, no changes, plan on owning at least 4 years. $1K is still $1,000..........

I drove by the local Acura dealership today to look at the vehicle inventory. I am strongly considering an '06 MDX and wanted to see what was in stock. Walking through the back lot I saw a number of vehicles with red tags that stated they were formerly one price and now a newer, lower price. All the price reductions were about $2600. I looked at the stickers and saw they were all 2006's, and various trim levels and colors, yet not all vehicles had the reduced price signs.

I read an earlier post from someone claiming that the 2006's would be reduced $2000 in February. I didn't look at any other Acura models, only the MDX, and I didn't look for a sales person to talk to about this. I don't know if this is dealer specific, or something from Acura. This is the only dealer in town, the next closest is about 2 hours away.

Does anyone have any insights into the price reductions posted? I was thinking of getting the vehicle in the next few days, and I am wondering if I should assume the invoice price is reduced by this amount, or if the dealer is just posting closer to invoice to mitigate any negotiations.

    hey all,

would much appreciate it if anyone can tell me if a 2006 MDX touring/nav/DVD plus sidesteps (in silver or black) for around 40,300 is a reasonable offer. (his asking price to me was 43,400 but i brought him down to 40,300)

I hardballed the dealer (in cherryhill, NJ) for a price of 38,000 hoping he would come down to 39,000. of course, he didn't and stayed put at 40k. (im thinking there is no rush to sell a 2006 model now)

As a sidenote, a dealer in north jersey (montclair) is offering the same car for 40,100 via an email quote without me even stepping foot in the dealership to begin negotiations.

    thanks for your help guys!

I got a quote today from a New England dealer for a 2006 MDX touring/nav/DVD for 41,477 (this includes the $615 destination charge). They will throw in free wheel locks. For side steps, they quoted $825 for parts+labor. They are offering me $20,000 for trade in of my 2002 MDX touring/nav that has 63,000 miles and paint scraped off the front bumper, but otherwise very clean. What do you think of this offer, folks?
  • bilmatbilmat Member Posts: 53
    Hi btf,

I can't imagine a scenario where Acura dealers are going to discount their '06 MDX's by $2K or any other set amount in Feb. or at any other time of the model year. The market place is too varied for that sort of thing. And you can bet that Acura isn't going to reduce the invoice price that dealers have to pay for the vehicle.

(I won't go into the ways that manufacturers can compensate its dealers so that a dealership can appear to sell a unit "below" invoice and still make a profit. That can get exceptionally complicated.)

Personally, I don't think a $2,600 reduction off an MDX is good at all if the discount is based on the sticker price.

I took delivery of an '06 Touring/Nav yesterday. It had an MSRP of $42,700 plus a destination fee of $615, which brought the total sticker price up to $43,315. With no work at all on my part, other than asking the fleet/internet manager for his best price, I paid $38,755, which included the destination fee. I wasn't the top math wiz when I was in school, but that looks to me like a $4,560 reduction off the total sticker price, and $337 "below" invoice if you add the $615 destination fee to the invoice cost of $38,477.

After adding fender flairs, running boards, wood steering wheel and a tailgate spoiler, all of which the dealer installed, the total price came to $41,030 before tax, license and doc fee.

As I said, all I did was contact the fleet/internet manager and ask him for his best price. It was as easy as buying a Saturn. No haggling was involved.
  • btfbtf Member Posts: 2
Bilmat, thanks for the reply and info. I plan to obtain the MDX in the next few days, and will use your results as a guide.

By the way, how do you like the wood steering wheel? I am interested in it, and the extra wood trim as well, but I haven't seen any pictures of what it looks like. Everything I see shows the wood grain pattern from the '05, even on the pictures labeled as '06.

I have taken it for a brief test ride and plan to take another one to check out a few more things. How do you deal with the salesperson who helps you for the test drives if you then go through the internet sales manager for actual pricing and negotiations?

Also, do you have many dealers to choose from in your area? Our next closest dealer is about 100 miles away. Thanks!

Since I got so much help in researching the MDX on Edmunds, I thought I would return the favor and share with everyone what I paid for my MDX.

I bought a base '06 MDX from a dealership in the peninsula in the San Francisco Bay Area for $1,000 under invoice. I paid $33,074.00 which includes destination charge.

I didn't buy the touring because I didn't really want a navigation system and save another $5K in the process. I hope this helps.

To anyone buying an 06 MDX in near future.

I have a brother-in-law that works for an Acura dealer who is a manager and he gave me some very helpful inside information.
He said in around March on this year, Acura will be offering low APR and a $1500 to $2000 reabte on all their 2006 MDX. He told me to obviously wait. They are doing this in preparation of 2007's.
This means that everyone who talks to a should be getting anywhere between $2000 to $3000 under invoice.
Remember Acura gets a dealer holdback of 2.5% on invoice cost from Acura which equates to about $1000, to 1,200 back on their cars.
This means you can still buy an 2006 MDX for $2000 under cost and the dealership is sell making a good profit.
So if you wait until March of 2006 or so, you can get an under invoice deal of anywhere between $2,000 to $3,000 ($1,500 rebate plus dealer holdback of 2.5% of invoice is their actual cost plus some other misc. rebates).
I cannot reveal his name because he will get fired.
    Happy Shopping!!

have been looking at a MDX for 3mo or so, got a quote for an 06/touring for 34K from the internet dept at the dealer in Daly City, CA. Figured if I could get the 2.9% it would be a good deal.

Ran my own credit check on 12/30/05, scored in the mid 700's

Bottom line, they would not honor the offer.. best was a 36.5K.. and said I only qualified for a 8.9%rate.??? they said I scored a 620?

Will never go back there.. what a waste of time

    To btf:

I had the wood steering wheel on my '01 Touring/Nav and got used to the ultra smooth feel of the plastic (or whatever the material is) at the top, where I normally grip the wheel. When I sat in other MDXs that had the stock steering wheel, the relative roughness just didn't feel good to me, so I opted for the wood steering wheel on my '06. If the slick/smooth feel of the wood steering wheel isn't important to you, I wouldn't spend the money, especially when you consider that the simulated wood trim in the '06 models is so dark that it doesn't really look like wood anymore. At least to my eyes. That's my one misgiving about the '06. It has a noticeably different look from the driver's seat than my '01, but I'm sure I'll get used to the different look in a month or two and won't think anything about it.

As far as taking a test drive, the internet/fleet manager can handle that. He has his own office and interacts with the buyer just like any other salesman. As I understand it, most of his income is derived from a set salary, not a commmission on what he sells. As a result, his goal is to move as many units out the door as possible, and the price he can sell a car for is based on x-number of dollars over invoice. At least that's been my car buying experience over the past 35 years. The last thing I would do is interact with a salesman at a given dealership, then go to the fleet manager of the same dealership for the sale. To me, that's just plain wrong.

There are several Acura dealers in the southern portion of the Bay Area where I bought both my '01 and my '06 (Los Gatos, Sunnyvale, San Jose, Redwood City and Pleasanton, to name a few). Telling you which one I used would identify the fleet manager I bought my '06 from, and as I understand the rules of this forum thread, that's a no-no. Having said that, I would imagine that the fleet managers at all of the dealerships would offer similar prices for their MDXs.

Don't waste your time at Valencia Acura. If you're going near the valley, go to Acura of Glendale. I just got a base(premium)for 33,000 and they were much more pleasant to deal with than Valencia. Valencia could not match this price.
  • bilmatbilmat Member Posts: 53
While $41K isn't a bad price for an '06 Tour/Navi/RES, you might be able to save a few more hundred on the deal. If that price includes the $615 destination fee, it's $3,815 below MSRP and $558 above invoice.

I bought an '06 Tour/Navi (no RES) a week-and-a-half ago and paid $38,755, which was $337 under invoice. But that was here in Northern California. I don't know how much bargaining power you will have in the NYC area. All of the dealers here in the S.F. Bay Area are well stocked.

As for accessories, I only purchased and had the dealer install four items that I wasn't comfortable installing myself: fender flairs, tailgate spoiler, wood steering wheel and running boards. While I paid the dealer MSRP for each, I received a substantial discount on the installation cost.

My total cost before tax, license and doc fee came to $41,030.

All of the other accessories I wanted I purchased at a sizeable discount over the Internet. These included a moonroof visor, cargo cover, cargo tray, all weather floormats, wood dash trim and wide body side mouldings.

    Hope this info helps.

    Bilmat,

Which dealer did you buy your vehicle from? Did you go through the internet sales? Did you get multiple quotes before making the purchase?

Acura of Pleasanton was my one and only stop. I was happy with the quote from Internet/Sales, and because I received such excellent service on my '01 MDX from that dealership over the years, I saw no reason to shop elsewhere.

(I'm not sure whether the term "Internet/Sales" qualifies as contact information. If it does, my reply may violate the rules of this board and this message may get pulled. C'est la vie.)
