My first car (67 Camaro) had a 6 cal and power glide. Guess it worked ok. One day I decided to shift manually. Wound it out in low, and shifted to high (or whatever the gears were called). All heck broke loose. Though the engine blew up. Never tried that again.

Wasn’t long before I sold it and got a stick, then was manual only for 34 years.

Looks like there was a caravan of folks going to a station wagon convention back in the 1950s:

What a wonderful photo! I wish I could step right into it.

Reminds me of one of the best lines Bob Seger ever came up with: "Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then".

Amazing how the two Plymouths are near-duplicates.

Probably just the drop off line for an elementary school day. :)

At least, that looks a lot like my daughter's school did this morning, substituting the wagons for "SUVs."

I'm thinking there's a ball diamond behind the photographer. I pass long lines of parked cars near those during little league season.

What did it hammer for at BaT? The asking price has to be nuts.

NM. found it. 121k. So only 4x markup! If trailer only got that high, where did they come up with half a mill?

Speculation is that it is a stunt to get people into the dealer, and maybe it is insured for the new price for nefarious reasons. Still pretty wacky.

So a display piece for the showroom “museum”, and someday they can sell it off for a realistic price.

May be part of a plan to bring in folks to see the new Supra. What do you think of it?

Seen worse. Actually looks like an evolution of the 2004. Even though it’s just a BMW coupe.

I think it is a bit overstyled too, par for the course for both the main brand (Toyota) and recent direction of the contributing brand (BMW).

Looks annoyingly "busy" but it's not awful. Some of the lines are quite nice, but the whole package? I got problems with the headlight array and the center grille. I really like the profile on the car, seen from 3 or 9 o'clock--roof line, window glass, etc. The spoiler looks a bit too fat for my tastes--the entire back end lacks "grace".

As a Toyota, that was a brand requirement! :@

I agree, the back view is the worst to me:

oh, yuck. that is flat out nasty. And they finally got a front end that was not too bad!

    Here's how Ferrari does it:

round lights "pick up" exhaust outlets. Trunk blackout mimics back glass.

The problem with that Supra is that it follows the "Let's throw a bunch of crap at the mockup and go with what sticks" design philosophy. All of a sudden, a '58 Olds doesn't look so bad. Hell, suddenly an Aztek looks like Masterpiece Theatre!
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
Supra back end looks like it got plowed into. The front end has too many pieces and the vehicle has perhaps a few too many lines. But I do like the greenhouse. As for the Ferrari, the taillights look like a 60's Ford show car. Just sayin'...

that was my dream car when I got out of college. Sadly it was about double my budget! Should have just bit the bullet and gotten one, or at least a GTI.

I would buy one like that today if it was a decent price, problem is, even that generation (and I would be fine with a 4 cyl GTS) has gotten too pricey if they are clean. And they did like to rust!

Those early Supras--I never understood those big add-on pieces around the wheel openings; reminded me of early '60's GM buses.

But they look like a supermodel next to that latest one, yecch.

My friend had an '84, I think. It was the model pictured, but maybe the first year it came out?

A couple of years later, we were talking about it, and I was expressing my admiration. He said, "My wife's Saab 900 turbo with a slushbox will blow my doors off."

That really bummed me out.. :(

When I moved into this house in 1997 there was a red Supra like the one pictured in the driveway of the house across the street. The first year or two I was here it was very occasionally started and driven, but not very often. After that it just sat there for years, decaying. One day I was walking past and witnessed the owner and another man in discussion. The fellow wanted to buy it and the owner responded with the infamous "I'm a-gonna fix it up someday" line. Of course he never did and after about 10 years of sitting and rusting it got flatbedded away. Hopefully some of the parts went to a good home.

I think the fenders on those wedge Supras are indicative of the 80s widebody craze. I always thought those were cool, too. I recall rust was most likely here in the rear hatch area, at the bottom of the window, and still might take 25+ years to develop.

The base model Supras didn't have those wheel well extensions. They were added because of the wider wheels/tires on the sport version (and for looks), kind of like how that era GTI had the wheel well extensions added.

That is my friend's model, down to the color.

I remember the rear panel below the trunk was black.

Interesting, but one would have to be a REAL Olds nut to buy a non-streetable car like this (if that's the case), at any price.

Not classic, but something I really liked when they came out, and you just rarely see now. An Infiniti G20. Still a sharp looking little car. And could be had with a stick!

Speaking of W116, saw a 280SE (base model for a couple years), brown, nice condition, in afternoon traffic. It had a personalized plate of my zip code, odd.

My sister and BIL had a gen I G20 - green over tan. Was a sharp little car. Kind of a grown up SE-R.

Amazing that we thought 140HP was all that, back in the day.

This is an interesting one - those oscillating vents.

I wonder if all of the 4WS cars had white wheels? When I was in high school, a friend/acquaintance had a 626 of this era, one of those lucky kids who got a hand me down late model car from his parents. It was white with white wheels, just like this, although I have no memory of it being a 4WS car, and I can't believe I would miss such a detail. It seemed like a really nice car even in the mid 90s. 4WS is a funny thing. I remember also in high school, I knew a girl who's mom got a new 93 or so Prelude with 4WS, which seemed like an insanely nice car.

Went for an early morning jog and saw a very clean MX6, red, V6 badging I think.

The old Motorweek reviews are classic. Those and the Thames reviews on Youtube are enjoyable viewing, not everything on the interwebs is crap.
