What are the procedures for vehicle registration when you buy from a dealer who is located out of state ?
As the dealer executes the registration, do they register in 'your' state or do you have to re-register the vehicle in 'your' state?
Are there any laws/regulations against driving a vehicle out of state without registration plates?
Thanks
Thanks for your help.
The dealer intially balked at my insistence that they handle ALL of the paperwork to title the vehicle in Ohio. They claimed that they had always had the out of state customer do so. I took the position that the transaction was not complete until they took care of it.
I did take the relevant Ohio phone numbers with me to Kentucky so they could call and verify the Ohio process and any questions related to sales tax (since I was trading a car for which I was entitled to a credit).
They issued me a Kentucky temporary tag (good for 30 days) and I drove the car home.
As it turned out, they did do all the paperwork but it took longer than it should have (extending past the 30 days for which the temp plate was good). Fortunately, this wasn't really a problem for me as I had another vehicle to drive. I did call them to check on things and they were more than willing to send me a second 30 day tag at their cost.
I strongly suggest following this procedure on any out-of-state purchase (if available in your state) to minimize the potential for paperwork issues. As long as you have physical possession of the vehicle they have a powerful incentive to get the paperwork right.
The experience was wonderful. I was picked up at the airport. Met the sales and finance person and was out the door in 75 minutes. They even packed me a cooler with lunch knowing I had the long drive.
Received the title yesterday, less than 2 weeks and have already registered in state. I didn't add any options for I didn't want to add more to the tax. And it's cheaper to buy from the web at wholesale and install yourself (saving on the labor).
Car is great and everybody (family and friends) like it.
Confirming that yours was a Black 2004 EXL-DVD for $28,600.00 out the door?
Thanks a mill.

Looking to buy a pilot EX-L 2005 sage pearl, from NJ.
Please advice if there are any great dealers with best deals.
Thanks

(2004 Pilot EXL-DVD, Sandstone metallic, fog lights, gold emblem kit, lugagge crossbars, rear splash guards, running boards, all season floor mats, cargo tray, cargo net and wheel locks.....$31,000 plus tax and plates.)
I submitted 8 internet quotes in Chicago.
The local dealership in St. Charles was the highest at $ 29286. The internet salesman even emailed me to go to the other dealership with the lower price I quoted him and buy it right away.
Lisle of Honda had the best deal at 27735 inc. dest. charge but they only had Black & Red.
Lisle's EX-L DVD price was at invoice + dest. charge (29609) but I could not justify $ 2005 more just for a DVD in the car.
Carrs in Chicago EX-L & EX-L DVD prices were at invoice + dest charge and had more color selection.
Bemis in Sycamore EX-L price was 28760.80.
So, I ended up buying an EX-L with the color I wanted and some options from Valley Honda in Naperville at a reasonable price this past Wed. I emailed an internet quote, and I replied with the price I wanted. I don't think anyone should tell any salesman what color you want because that color will somehow have added options already on the vehicles that they can't take off. After discounting a color that was supposedly on hold for another buyer, discounting another that had a chrome varnish, I ended up with the color I wanted but it had a 10-yr warranty on the exterior and interior (995) + a pinstripe (125). I wanted other options and made a discounted deal on the options. For $ 28468, I got the car including dest. charge, cargo mat, splashguards, wheel lock, all season floor mat, 10-yr environmental pkg, and pinstripe. I just had to pay $53.52 for doc, 6.5% sales tax, and new lic & title $ 143. I don't know if the 10-yr option is worth anything but I got the car with the color I wanted at a good price with relatively no stress or haggling. When I picked up the car and paid with their financing, they were courteous and fast. Buying options after you buy the car is cheaper to buy aftermarket through the web instead of the high markup the dealers will charge. Sorry for this long e-mail, but I gained a lot from this message board and I wanted to contribute something back. I was looking to buy a Pilot for more than a year and I think this time is the best time to buy for a good deal. Thanks!
I'll post back and let everyone know if they are avctually as nice as they sure appear to be
I am very pleased, and would do it again, as I saved something like $2000 over what Boston dealers wanted (all wanted MSRP for 2005's) Funny thing....one Boston dealer called on my cell phone while I was signing papers at MP...he now wanted to match the MP price!.....Too Late!
One note of caution, check your insurance for the ride home. If you live in Ohio, your insurance co has to cover you for a minimum of five days on out of state purchases...MA does not have this rule, and will not generally cover out of state purchases unitl it has been registered in MA...I am not sure, but I may have just driven a new Pilot 640 miles w/out insurance...but like they say in New Hampshire..Live Free or Die! I do have 30-day Ohio temporary registratrion plates.
I paid $500 over MP Invoice. MP Invoice = Honda invoice + $520 destination charge. I paid $31,250 before accessories. I believe MSRP (w/ destination) for a Pilot EXL-DVD is $34,100
Can you tell me what price did you pay on the roda?
I too live in the Boston Area and have been tempted to look into a MP purchase in Ohio.
Could you post the dealer in the Boston area who was willing to match the MP price?
Thanks a lot!!
I would also suggest bringing certified funds if you are not financing through them..MP will take a personal check, but they'll wait 10 days for the check to clear before they send you the title for registration in your state. If you have certified funds, they'll send it right away.
Sorry,
How much did you pay on the road(Including taxes, tags and everything).
$125 document and misc fees from MP
$1060 in accessories (side steps, rubber mats, cargo tray, ski attachment, cross bars)
MP Honda ncluded at no add'l charge a 30 day registration tags and a free tank of gas.
I have paid no sales tax, but will (5%)when I register the car in MA.
Could honda allow a typo to get into there pilot manual? I hope if enough people call, they will resolve this issue. I don't want to have to buy premium gas with prices only going up!

Yes I did try them. I generally like that dealership (for service, etc.), but they were not interested in coming close to the MP Honda price
Fine enough vehicle (my wife wanted it), but for $34k - no memory seats, no power passenger seat, no auto dimming rearview mirror, sorry warranty, 7" DVD screen when everything else is going to 9", etc. And that's all that I found in the 12 hours I've owned it.
If we didn't need the third seat and demand mechanical excellence, we would get another RX.
Advice - drive everything out there unless you can get them to sell you this for around 27k.
We are trying to decide between the Pilot, MDX, GX470 and XC90. While the amenities you mentioned are desireable, we recognize that if we want a 3rd row seat and mechanical reliability, the Pilot is about the least expensive way of achieving it. A 2004 GX470 with all of the goodies for about $44.5k-$46k is tempting, but I do think the Pilot at $12-14k less is a solid choice.
Thanks
