Coupe production is on schedule for a June 2005 start-up with both V6s. The Convertible looks to start up in October of 2005, also with both V6s. I do not recall reading any start up dates for the 6-speed, so it could (should?) be ready to go when the 3.9L starts.
Pontiac has updated the web site G6 section. The GT listing does list manual shift mode for the auto transmission, which was a question here last week. The picture section also has a straight on shot of the shift lever with the manual gate. Looks like it will be available. http://www.pontiac.com/g6/index.jsp?brand=g6&pagename=models_- - prices
Ahh...OK. Wonder how much of a premium the GTP will command over the regular GT. Does anyone think the G6 GTP can slide in under $27K with all the bells and whistles?
Well, the current Grand Prix GTP is right around $27k. These cars will definatley overlap in price. My guess is that the G6 GTP will start around $27k and be over $30k loaded.
$30k for a Grand Am replacement?! Sorry, but that's plain nuts! Granted, I know the G6 probably spanks the Grand Am in just about every conceivable way...but still, $30k??
I predict MEGA discounts and rebates for this puppy if the MSRP is anywhere near $30k for a loaded G6 GTP. I'm reading that some people are getting $4,000 off a new Malibu Maxx, no questions asked.
IMO, Pontiac (and GM for that matter) is seriously hurting themselves with these outrageous pricing structures. Instead of pricing these cars so high and using rebates or other incentives to move them out the door, they should price them low to begin with.
Ah, well, what the hell do I know. I drive a Hyundai ;-).
This is the same thing that happened with Nissan in 2002. The Altima V6 overlapped the Maxima in price as well. I would take a Maxima anyday over a Altima V6, because the Max is their flagship car. Same thing with Pontiac now. I'd rather have a Grand Prix GTP over the high end Grand Am anyday if both are going to be close in price! Why are they using the GTP name now also on the high end Grand Am, oops G6 replacement?
I for one would never pay $30k or close to it for a G6 either. Even a Grand Prix GTP is too much at $30k. I can get an Infiniti I35 with similar sub 7 second performance for that price with the longer warranty and free loaner cars.
BTW.. I have a 2002 GTP coupe, last year of the 2 door. Bought it in summer of 2002 as leftover since 2003 were coming out and knowone wanted 2 doors... for about $22k fully loaded after the $3k rebate.
I just recall Grand Am ads in the paper running around $16k, even cheaper. Jaws will drop if people walk into a dealer and see stickers in the 30s. Even high 20s.
Repeat buyers will have the expectation that the car will at least remain in the teens in terms of pricing.
There's a Malibu Maxx test in the July issue of Car and Driver. They got it to 60 in 7.8 seconds, so the G6 should be about the same. Not bad for the base V6. They also mentioned that it has a lot of low end torque, and that "mechanical thrash" has been improved a lot.
I just read here about the road feel on the Saturn Ion Redline that you can actually feel the road and the steering actually delivers! Do you think by the time the G6 comes out the steering will actually be ok and not what everyone is saying about the Malibu?! That is the one thing that scares me about this G6!!!
The GP looks like it competes with the Maxima, maybe, maybe not. The G6 (26-30K 250 hp GTP) in size, features and price seems to compete with the Altima (26.9K 250hp loaded). With a Manumatic tranny, 250 hp (GTP) and good handling, it seems as though the G6 could be called an American Altima. The car looks about as cool. There are some things missing, however. IMO this handsome car would look really good with 2 exhaust tips like the Altima, and where is the Nav system? GM really seems to be doing things right this time, we will have to wait and see the interrior for ourselves and test the car to be sure. If it gets (at least in GTP form) that second exaust pipe it would do wonders for the cars sporting image, does anyone agree? I believe if the G6 gets the tips and meybe the nav, the Altima could be called a Japanese G6.
I have not heard anything about the G6 having 250 hp. The GTP with the 3.9L will achieve 240 hp. And yes the 3.9L will have dual exhaust. If you want to see the interior just go to pontiac.com! However, the G6 will not get a navigation system. It will have OnStar, which is almost as good. If all GM navigation systems are like the one on my mom's CTS-V, it's a little too complex for everyday use. Also, the kind of person that would need a navigation system would get lost frequently. And a person who can't find his way around on the road will surely take a while to figure out the video games in his dash! I don't see why everyone makes a big deal out of these navigation systems. Are you gonna use it to and from work everyday or what? These things are highly overrated. O yeah, everyone, don't order a G6 brochure from pontiac yet. It's only 6 pages...
#1 AWD #2 GXP #3 Hard-top convertible, all of which add appreciably to the price and value. This isn't the old Grand Am coupe, this is a car much closer to the Infiniti G35x with the addition of a trick folding roof.
MSRP for the Grand Am GT1 V6 is already over $24K and the G6 is a much better car — larger, roomier, faster, more powerful, better-handling etc. Even with a modest price increase for the 3.5 L G6 GT, a 3.9 L GTP will easily be in the high $20s and the eventual GXP in the $30s, especially with awd. Add in a bit more for the folding hardtop and a price in the mid $30s is not unreasonable. The stripper 2.4 L 4-cylinder should be much more affordable.
I saw the black G6 at the great Auto Show in Motion (what a blast) anyway, it rocks!!! I like it even more the second time I am seeing it. I think this is the going to be a gigantic seller even if the GT only has one chrome exhaust! Why did they do that with the GT?! All other GT's including the old GA has dual exhaust? Man, I will be test driving this one in September! Does anybody know how much fuel the 3.9 will eat up?
I too saw the black G6 at the autoshow in motion in Philly. The looks very good and the rep told me the 3.9 will go into production in April of '05. I wont be getting a car before then so it doesnt matter to me, but it should have been ready earlier. This car is definitely the American Altima, except it looks better. The design is much more cohesive than any Japanese midsizers.
Most people are not going to buying the GTP model so few G6s are going to cost $28K. Most models will probably be the 3.5 V6 models costing between $22K-$25K. It is ridiculous to think you are going to see tons of $30K G6s on the lot.
one today in a Home Depot parking lot. It was part of the employee test fleet. Dark gray GT with 17" rims. Looked very sharp and sporty. Very muscular stance. Interior was a light tan color - looked good. The only thing I did not like was wood trim around the shifter and on the door grabs - should be some sort of brushed aluminum.
From what I have read the Grand Prix will be moving up, wait until it goes Rear Wheel Drive with a V-8, and then the G6 will take its place.
If you want something smaller, you will have to buy a Chevy. If you haven't already noticed GM is starting their plan of separating the brands more so than years past.
I think you can make an educated guess as to how the public will respond to mid-30s Pontiacs.
The same way it responded to all other mid-30s domestics, outside of the newer Caddys.
Once you set foot into the 30s price zone, the competition goes way up and virtually nothing in the domestic world can compete. Chrysler is offering $1,000 off the Magnum wagon already. The Mercury Marauder is a disaster. Even Thunderbirds are rotting on the lots.
The Trick Roof will be a $1500 option. g-d dam Unions, GM spends more money on Healthcare per vehicle than steel, look at G6's competition, direct from nissan's website...
Lets not forget that you could get a Navigation system on the altima and a bose sound system. The interior of the Altima (their are allot over here in NYC) has more bright accents and is improved over the last year.
The G6 has no navigation, initailly costs more, and is so far underpowered compared to the Altima. Their is no Bose system, either. The interrior is better than other late pontiacs, ok, but guys common, what the hell do you expect when nissan is paying is American non-union workers around $15 an hour with less emphasis on heath care and retirement, that pull up the cost of cars.
I would love for pontiac's too be cool again, but it just seems that GM isn't in the right cost structure to do anything about it. We all know they have the engines (3.6L VVT v6) we all know they have the sound systems(STS), the good interriors(GTO) and all the right stuff. They just can't afford to put them all together in a car of this price point. All of the other vehicles are either in different market segments, or prices or even body styles.
Meybe with incentives the G6 will make itself known in the market, its just sad to see the fighter than should, at least initially... be disqualified right out of the gates.
The fact that GM is putting in a coupe and convertable should give it an edge over Altima, but pound for pound the Japanese still have a winner.
Let's see if they kick [non-permissible content removed] anywhay.
I haven't looked at the site you referenced but a few clarifications (although probably not addressing your concerns). The "base" G6 coming out for 2005 Model has the same 200 hp engine, just a different gear ratio. The 170 hp 4 cylinder doesn't come out until next model year and so the pricing you saw probably isn't for that.
The G6 GT has a Monsoon 8-channel amplifier as part of that package.
Nothing I can say about Navigation system other than OnStar
Edmunds has the V6 Altima SE at $24,310 vs the $21,300 G6. And since it includes Leather, the Nav option looks to be $5,900 ($30,210). Could get a 2005 Grand Prix with nav for less.
The base Altima S 4 Cyl with Automatic is $20,110 vs the $21,300 G6 V6.
Don't think that the price comparison is that bad with not much feature info to dig into yet.
The prices I looked at were from the manufacturer, and just the starting price, the SE v6 has some options to it, to hike up the price. It has to be since you can go on nissanusa to check the price that i got, i'm not lying.
2005 Grand Prix? Nav? The 2004 GP does not have a nav system, are you telling me they are putting in a nav system for 2005??? THis would be very interesting. I don't know why you mentioned the nav option, i'm talking base prices here, and by the way, im pretty sure the nav iption includes more than just leather and nav, but i didn't check.
you have to compare bones to bones, its v4 vs v4, v6 vs GT. I know the v4 is not out yet (also, SE vs GT sounds about right), i have a question,
will the v4 replace the v6 is base models, or will it be a less expensive model???
lets not forget the Altima outshines the G6 by 50 hp!!!!!! I don't know about you, but most of my firends don't care about ohv/c or any of that trash, they just see that for the same (and sometimes lower) sticker, you could get 50 more hp. Thats it...
Theres WAAAAAAAAY too much judgement of the car going on in here, without it having even been driven. Face, folks. The people buying this car will not be the enthusiasts that BMW owners are. Since there seems not to be an explicit features or options list yet, why jump off the deep end on pricing. It will be easier to stack the G6 on top of the Altima when all info is available. Additionally, maybe we should wait to drive the vehicle and see the performance figures before calling the G6 a failure. Sure the 200hp engine may not accelerate like the Altima, but the 3.9L IS on the way.... Lighten up!

THis was your Nav mention, and i did mention the nav as a shortcomming, but Nav has nothing to do with price, around here (NY) for people my age (20 or so) Nav, Xenon and the like are more like... pretige features, because you can spot them instantly. It has nothing to do with cost, these features are expensive options that are different from the base cost of the vehicle.
WHat I was saying is that I believe it would help the car's image, just like it did Altima's, to offer these features even if they are expensive options. THis is just to help in debates and sightings, you know. Many people under 50 or 40 won't even look at this car if it doesn't seem modern. The Altima does, and i know the G6 is, but its b/c me and all of you guys are into cars and know the G6 a little better than outsiders.
So long as a 3.9L G6 comes in around the same as a V6 Altima, all will be well. The 3.5L G6 seems to be priced fairly though I wonder how much the G6 will steal sales from the Grand Prix?
I think the next GP will need to move up market to get away from the over lap.

The GTP also has a vehicle stability control system

I agree, though, lower the price dramatically and hold off on rebates. That would help residual values tremendously.
It worked for Scion. Reverse sticker shock. $14k for an xB? Then they sell at full MSRP and demand is high to this day.

I'm not sure how receptive the public will be to $30k mid-size Pontiacs. The GTO is selling slowly, even with RWD and a V8.
