Around the city loop here in Boston, I average about 21.9. But on the open highway, I've seen go up as high as 33 mpg. But remember, I've got a 6-speed. So the extra gearing helps out on the highway. It's not the gas-hog everyone calls it. A Toyota Prius would get terrible mileage if someone drove it like they stole it.
Actually, even with the 3800, it still would smoke the 500. I was talking in terms of off the straight line. When it comes time to corner or when the pavement is hilly, the Lacrosse just doesn't cut it. Nor does the 500. But the 3.6L engine is a marvel piece of machinery. It is a good as most of Japanese/European offerings. So to answer you, this does not mean the 500 outpaces the Lacrosse, it just means they aren't leaders of the pack. But the Lacrosse is the performer of the two.
:lemon: I bought my GT with the pano roof mid-June '05. Between then and end of Sept it was in the shop 5 times - each time because the pano roof generates cracking and friction noises. It cracks over bumps and on turns (especially when the turn is "against the camber". The service manager tells me GM has no fix. They called in a field engineer who did 'something' - the noise went away but only for a week. All he can do is wait for a GM bulletin. He assures me that GM is aware of the problem and is supposed to be working on it (lol). There is also a constant "friction" noise (plastic on plastic) in the corner of the pano right above the driver's head. Everything else about the car I like - but these noises have taken all the pleasure out of owning the new car; any kind of trip is just so annoying that I do not look forward to driving it. I have contacted "PM Cares" (lol) who gave me absolutely no satisfaction other than provide me with the # for BBB. This I did and have opened a case. Surprise ! The very next morning I get a call from GM Customer Service. They are coming back to me this week with details of what they can do for me. (The only satisfactory thing is either replace the car without a sunroof or refund all monies). If they don't come up with the goods I am continuing with the BBB process and invoking the lemon law. Has anyone had similar experiences and what responses have they had ? :lemon:
But the 3800 LaCrosse will outhandle any Camry/ES300. Not that is something to brag about but that is what most buyers in that market expect. No boy racers there.
Not quite sure of the noises, but my buddy's G6's panoramic roof developed squeaks and rattles and then later started to leak. All this on a 4-month old car. But the Pontiac dealer did make it right for him. They took the whole roof apart and resealed the tracks and put it back together. No squeaks. No rattles. No leaks. That was 5 months ago. So get bacl in touch with the dealer and demand they get it right.
P.S.-- while the pano roof looks good, sure am glad I opted against it.
I have a few miles on my '05 G6 GT now. Avg. fuel milage is still 24.5. Hadn't had much hwy miles. No problems with this car. No sunroof either. Bought the rear valance from the GTP and added single in dual out exaust. Magnaflow. The electric blue gets a lot of positive comments. Be nicer with a little less orange peal tho. I'm glad GM aligned with XM. I love my car and the XM radio. I never listen to local So Cal radio. I don't understand all the GM bashing from a few posters. Ever see a modern car without a TSB? This is my 1st GM car....seems to be as good as anything out there in it's class/price....
It depends totally upon your taste. If you'd like to have an automatic, go with the GXP. It's a solid performing car, albeit not as engaging as a G6 GTP. If you're like me and like to row your own, go with GTP 6-speed
1. Overall likes/dislikes: I for one love my GTP. The car has the solidity and fit/finish that will put some foreign kings(ie:toyota/honda) to shame. The overall design is years beyond what I thought GM could ever produce. Not much to dislike EXCEPT: If you're like me at 6'3 tall, you will wish for more headroom. But I can't blame that on the car because I could've had one WITHOUT the sunroof. The sunroof-equipped cars headliner impede on headroom.
2. Performance: The performance of this car may surprise you. My intial thought was HMM. GM yet again put big horsepower in a front-drive car( think '97-'03 GP). But oh buddy. I took it for a test drive and that changed my whole perception of the G6. My only complaint that I experience in my car is mild torque-steer. But even that is to be associated with most front-drive cars. I've got a host of upgrades on my car( Airaid cold-air induction,less-restrictive Borla exhaust, Dyna-Tune chip among other goodies) and my car has managed to get to 60 mph in 5.6 sec. All this in a $22,000 dollar car. Believe it or not, I've smoked a few Altima's V6's and Mazda 6's BEFORE the upgrades. I also put better rubber (Goodyear F1 Supercar) and lighter BBS wheels on my car and that improved cornering, unsprung weight mass, and braking. So to put it in perspective, the G6 GTP 6-speed is a complete sleeper. I just wish more people gave it a second look.
Mileage: As far as mileage goes, before I put all the goodies on my car, around the Boston city loop, I was managing only 18.9. But that was with the car idleing for 1-hour in traffic everyday. On the highway, if I kept the cruise set on 75 mph, I managed a respectable 28.8 mpg. But after the upgrades, especially with the cold-air induction, I get about 22 in the city now. The highest I've seen on the highway was 33mpg on a recent trip from Boston to Memphis(Elvis Rocks!!!!!!!)
just out of the dealers lot this week, i was running about 20.5 in town traffic. this is with the 4speed auto in my G6 GTP.
i have driven a lot of Pontiac product the last few decades and this car is superb. a great value for the money. local kids think it is way shaper than the other cars in its class.
only by the way issue i have is the need to get new rims for dedicated snow tires in this part of the NE. factory tires for summer, the Bridgestone Potenzas are excellent, but no way are they snow tires.
my wife steals the car whenever i am not looking. interior room with the normal (smaller) sunroof is very good for me and i am 6'1". even back seat room is spacious.
Thanks for the feedback. I really like rowing my own gears (it's my wife who is a little reluctant) and it's pretty sweet that Pontiac has put a six speed into the g6 sedan. I've got kids...
I'm impressed with your times -- and your mpg. That's awesome.
I've never understood why only the Europeans (BMW, Saab, etc) generally put a higher horsepower sedan with a stickshift. Toyota and Honda always slap an auto on their sedan v6s, as does F, GM and DCX. Yes, I know that most Americans don't want to shift, but most of the cars I've bought have had one Now if only there was a Chevy Caprice-sized rear-driver V8 with a stick....
I have all the same problems you are encountering. My pano sunroof also creaks. Even more annoying for me is the popping noise above the driver's side headliner, is coming from the pano roof. Only does this when temperature is 50 degrees or colder (with the exception on any humid day) which living in Kansas is about 70% of the years!!!! I have had mine in the shop several times and they have been unable to fix, in fact I think they made it worse. I haven't had mine in shop since April '05. I purhcased my g6 in january. Also was in contact with GM Customer Service and requested different vehicle or money back. They told me there was no way that I would receive different vehicle or money back, said that was what the warranty was for. (i was so frustrated). Never were able to fix any of this. GM ended up making 1 car pymt for me since my car had been in the shop for a total of 30 days, for this & other repairs!!!! (that's a whole other story). I never went to the BBB but they also said that would be an alternate choice of mine. Am curious to see how you fair with the BBB. Keep me informed. ">
It seems the only real complaint about the G6 is the fiat sourced big sunroof. You can get a regular one if you want, so thats fine. It seems like a real quality car. Thats a good thing too GM needs it.
I had a chance to check out Fusion at a local Ford dealer and I have to say I dont see what all the hype is about in terms of the interior. The interior looks fine for the most part but I couldnt find any way it would be superior to the G6/Malibu as so many are saying. I definitely didnt think it was up to Accord standards. I saw unfinished plastic edges on the center storage door, a mouse fur headliner and unimpressive materials on the doors/dash/ On top of that the airbag cover on the passenger side shows (unlike most modern GM cars) and there are few chrome accents on the console or gauges to brighten things up. The exterior was fine as was the rear seat space. With the upgrades made to the '06 G6 I dont see the Fusion being a clear winner. Another thing to take into account is the Fusion 4 cylinder has about the same mileage as the 3.5L G6, it's 23/31 with a stick.
I totally agree with you. I went down to the local Mercury dealer to check out the new Milan. Is this the car Ford is banking on to save Mercury? They may need to go back to the drawing board. This car doesn't show me all the things that every auto journalist is bragging on. Take the ride for instance. It is no where near as composed as my G6 GTP 6-speed. And my car is supposed to be the "sportier" one. On the transmission gear shift, you can only select PRNDL, sort of like the cars from the '70's. The interior, while nice, doesn't execute functionality like the G6/Malibu twins. Oh, and the one I drove had a rattle somewhere in the interior that the saleman described as "normal". Normal for who? Not for me spending $26k on a car. To sum it up, the car fell way short of my expectations. Don't believe the hype.
I think the Milan looks better than the Fusion but I cant say that either looks better than the G6, espcially the GTP with 18s. I have seen a GTP coupe on the road and a GTP sedan at the dealership. While the interior desing of the G6 may not be the most exciting in the world, I dont have a problem with it's quality. I have been in the car several times and I think it's every bit as nice as the Fusion, plus it's gauge cluster is much better. Not to mention the fact that the Fusion has no XM or remote start, two features I want in my next car. The Fusions only real advantage is the 6 speed auto, but it's not faster than the G6 with 3.5L. The press is being very generous in regards to the Fusion.
I am just wondering if you guys experience squeaking noises on your brakes because I only drove my new 06 G6 only for about a month and I started to hear squeaking noises. Do you think I need to take this problem to the dealership or tell them at the 1st service.
I've read the same reviews, in fact, Car and Driver said the the Aisin-Borg Warner tranny is not a great match for the 3.0L Duratec Ford motor. My thing is the Duratec is not a good motor for the tranny and the whole entire car. The main reason the 500/Montego have been such duds are that the cars don't have the enough power for a car their size. Even if you select the CVT, it still feels underpowered. This is something GM knows how to do. Give PLENTY of bang for the buck. Ford should not have released this car until the new 3.6L motors were ready. Ford thought that they would be able to overshawdow the likes of the 300 and G6 when they introduce these cars. Instead, those 2 eclipsed the 500/Montego. Ford take note: the 21st century, especially the year 2005, is not a great time to produce slow cars. When the Ford Taurus was introduced in 1986, it was unstoppable for a car at the time. You got a decent size car with decent engine power. And they later went on to produce the famous SHO's, which were plenty fast for a 4-door car at the time. Only the Nissan Maxima gave it a run for the money. However, the 500 is a great car in search of a better powertrain.
Is GM coming out with a 6-speed auto for the G6/Malibu's? I was reading somewhere they're designing there own auto, much like 4L60-E and 4L80-E four speeds. If this is true, then this may be one of the best auto tranny's on the market as the 4-speeds have always been responsive. I know they're going to have 6-speeds in the new GMT 900 full size trucks and the Corvette got a new 6-speed auto tranny. If they put it in the G6, looks like we'll be buying another one for the wife because she can't drive stick and won't learn. She swears that I bought the stick to keep her from driving it
Ford and GM have been working together to develop a 6 speed for FWD. I believe GM is developing it and Ford is helping with the cost and using it in their vehicles.
I thought so. I can rest assured now knowing that GM is building it and not FORD(Fix Or Repair Daily) or ( Found On Road Dead) and CERTAINLY NOT-(First On Race Day)
I would compare the 2.4 to the 2.4 Honda Accord and Camry, a more fair comparison than to the V6 in any makers' lineup.
On a test drive the V6 will always outshine the 4, since you don't have to pay for gas. Also, we all get adrenalined up on test drives and stronger engines ALWAYS make a better impression. It takes calm nerves and a sensible outlook to exercise restraint.
Two things to consider:
1. The 4 is as quiet as the 6, at cruise, but some automotive writers downgrade it for noise because they take the extra engine roar during hard acceleration into account. I can live with engine roar or a so-called "busy" engine during acceleration; what I want is quiet at cruising speed. So the 4 works for me in this regard
2. The 4, at least in the similar Malibu, has been rated higher, by a couple of auto magazines, in handling - it has less weight on the front end than the 6.
Finally, the engine compartment is more spacious with the 4, and hence a little easier to work with. Although the 6 gets excellent crash tests, the 4 is also a narrower engine and might allow even better "crushability" of the front end in an accident.
I am happy to see GM keeping the 4 cylinder option open. Their pushrod 6's get admittedly great gas mileage, but I am a fan of well designed, world class 4's like the Ecotec in the base model Malibu's and G6's. While I would like to see a stick shift available with the 4 (as with the Camry and Accord) most buyers of American cars don't order enough stick shifts to justify production; Toyota and Honda can offer stick shifts because in the rest of the world, stick shifts far out-number automatic transmissions. Fortunately, the GM automatic 4 speed is considered one of the sturdiest and best shifting around; I am somewhat dubious of the introduction of 5 and 6 speed automatics, since the manufacturers of the earlier 4 speed variants had some reliability issues, and the parts in the 5 and 6 speed are even tinier than in the 4 speeds. With a torque converter, most 4 speed automatics seem to perform comparably to 5 speed stick shifts; the major problem with automatics, to me, is that they lower the "fun factor" of doing it yourself.
The GM/Ford 6 speed will debut in the Satun Aura in summer of 2006. I assume that the G6 and possibly Malibu, will get this tranny but that hasnt been confirmed yet. I would hope that at least the GTP and SS models get the six speed auto. I doubt this 6 speed will have the poor shift quality of the Aisin unit that Ford is using right now. GM rarely, if ever, makes autos will poor shift quality.
The 6 speed has no clutch plates, just clutches. The new Dexron VI was developed just for that transmission, as for me I would wait to see how they go.
Hi..Just wanted to tell you to please make sure that the steering problem is fixed before you drive anywhere...On Tuesday morning, we (my husband and I) had our 6 year old and 3 year old daughters on our way to school. The power steering locked in a curve at 50 mph and we were spun around I don't know how many times and flipped 4 times. We landed upside down in a ditch. Ironically our panoramic roof held up and we walked away with only bruises, cuts and dislocated bones. My 6 year old was the worst of all and had to be transported by ambulance. I am furious that GM hasn't issued a recall on the EPS ..They did issue it on the harmonic balancer which causes the engine to come unseated and can affect the steering but all of the engineers seem to think our problem was the EPS. We were very, very lucky and I will use whatever I need to to push GM to recall these cars for the steering problem. We only had our car 5 days...And get this, the dealer sold it to me as a GM Certified Vehicle with the open recall on it. So, you definitely have to check things out for yourself...Glad to see we are not the only ones with the steering problem but certainly hope no one else has to endure what we did...
The GTP is the only G6 without electric assist steering. I personally would avoid electric assist steering and moonroofs. Both are, or can be problematic. Others will disagree, which is fine. Not too enthused about throttle-by-wire, but that is yet another techno part which is suppose to make the car more fuel efficient and reliable. Hummm? Some of those cars have throttle lag, and other problems. To each his own, I am out on some of these changes for cars.
m1miata, I have GTP 6-speed with the standard-size sunroof and it's just as good as other cars. The 4-piece roof is hugely problematic. It has leak and rattle issues . The drive-by-wire system can be a little jerky at times, albeit less than the Euro makes(ie: BMW and Mercedes, and they also include brake by wire)

The drive-by-wire system can be a little jerky at times, albeit less than the Euro makes(ie: BMW and Mercedes, and they also include brake by wire) I do agree with you that the automakers should keep things simple. I just can't get with cars accelerating by computers.
The GTP ...Yes - yes, no electric assist, and thus a best bet for steering feel and quality. The roof panels just look like trouble ahead. Any torque steer when driving straight under full acceleration? How about a right turn and medium to heavier acceleration - any torque steer, like the wheel wants to jump out of your hands, and the car screw itself into the right hand side of the road, or parked cars? I have FWD drive again, and looking forward to the day I can afford an AWD or RWD car again. For bad weather and general use FWD is OK, but for most driving on those country roads, I wish I had a RWD again.
I have the same issue red. Actually, I have a ton of issues, including driver side leaking and remote start problems. I took it to the dealer to fix the issues and they said that they only found the leak. I'm going to pick it up tonight and will let you know if I still have the same problems.
I have just a hint of torque steer. Not so much in a straight line, but when exiting and entering corners under load the car gets fidgety in the wheel. But that is associated with front-drive cars. I was looking into installing a Quafie limited-slip diff to eliminate the torque steer. The Chevy Cobalt SS and Saturn Ion Red Line both have available Quafie's and they don't have a hint of under/over or torque steer. Looking for an affordable RWD sports car? Check out the Solstice. I test drove one today as I was getting the usual lube and oil job done on the GTP. I came away feeling impressed with how Pontiac has really made a competitive car for the foreign sports car segment (ie: Miata and Z4). The one I checked out had air-conditioning, leather interior, upgraded sound system, power everything, and polished 18" alloys all for around $23K. Not a bad deal considering the performance you get. 0-60 in about 7 seconds. You could turn those country roads into a track course.:)
I purchased my 2005 G6 on July 28, 2005. Since purchasing it, it's spent more than 5 weeks at the dealership. Now, they're refusing to do any more work on it until they're advised by GM because I contacted the Attorney General in the state of purchase (NC). The roof has been replaced twice and is once again, not closing. When it does work, I'm experiencing the same problems you mention. When I contacted Pontiac, like yourself, I was given the number to the BBB--like they'll really do anything!
And they are still advertising it, like it is something good -- a GM advantage. Sunroofs aren't my thing, but by gosh, if this one is advertised as a super cool idea of the 21st century, they need to deliver. Maybe there is a standard type sunroof they could put in there, and credit you the difference. Keep us informed. Hope GM aims to help their customers with this problem. A positive solution for the customer would be a good indication that they know who they work for. They work for you. I do hope they know that, the dealership and employees know that, and CEO of GM knows this. Ultimately, they all work for you, the customer. Now you may think this is not so. They may think this is not so too. And in the end it may a rude awakening if the boss, which is you, fires them! It is the simplest concept yet hard for so many to understand in business. Come to think of it, politicians forget this all too often -- oh well !
I bought a 06 GTP black. After having it a week I decided to wash it and while I dried the car I noticed quite a few paint blems. Has anyone else noticed paint problems? Also, 6 speed quite notchy......
I just picked up a 2006 G6 sedan with the 4 cylinder engine. I am amazed that it is every bit as refined as my 2003 Camry with the 200hp 6 cylinder. The G6 handling reminds me of the 2 Corvettes I owned in my younger days It get great gas mileage. However,.I find the steering requires constant correcting - nothing major, just a bit annoying. I reduced the tire pressure to the pressure indicated on the sticker attached to the body and this helped but this issue is not yet resolved. I wonder if anyone out there has any TSB's that address thiese issues.

I would get the 6sp sedan g6. I'd like to hear feedback from anyone out there regarding:
1: overall likes/dislikes
2: performance
3: mileage -- I'm curious what you get when you just ease on down the road in 6th at 75mph.
If you've got the 6sp coupe, feel free to let me know too, since the drivetrain is identical.
Thanks

All the specs are on the Pontiac website but it is not available in the 'build it now' section.
