I have a couple of questions about your 4cyl G6. The big question is the power, is it pretty good or just decent? The second question I have is the gas mileage so far? I am considering a G6 sedan with the 4cyl for mainly economy. Gas maybe a little cheaper now, but it is going to go back up eventually. Thanks for your time.
  • techboytechboy Member Posts: 6
The 4 cylinder is a DOHC engine just like my 6 cylinder 200hp Camry. The G6 engine develps most of its torque at around 2200 rpm or so which means its every bit as fast as my Camry on the highway. It is a silky smooth engine that, quite frankly is unlike any domestic product I have driven. Also to note, the 4 cylinder has just about the same torque as the 6 cylinder G6, some 200 ft. lbs. plus. It accelerates strongly and smoothly. When I went shopping for a new vehicle it was to replace a 1994 Sentra. I was looking for a basic econo box with good gas mileage. The G6 has exceeded my expectations in every single aspect of the ownership experience. The funny thing is I never thought I would buy a domestic car again. My G6 is superior to the competition. It is a thrill to drive, solid, quiet and responsive. I get about 600kms. to a tank of gas in combined driving, a lot of which is on the highway. I get 35mpg, just like my Sentra. The difference is the G6 is a sports car, not basic transpotation.

For future references, your 2.4L I-4 G6 makes:

    167HP @ 6300rpm
    162lb-ft of torque @ 4500rpm which is respective for a 4-cyl engine

Ok, Im am so aggravated with my G6. I loved my car when I bought it! Ive had it now for 8 months! And the past month things have been squeaking, breaking...and making me crazy!

The car is getting dropped off tomorrow at the dealership and I dont want it back until its fixed! Please let me know if any of you have had any of these problems and whats been wrong!

    PROBLEM 1:

I noticed this when I was merging into interstate traffic at 70 mph...Im not really sure what my RPMs were when I heard it but it was this high pitched squeak as the car changed gears. You know the noise that cars with the turbo in them make (like the Jetta with turbo), it was similar to that. But we all know our G6s dont have turbo!!!! It makes that noise everytime the RPMs get up there.

PROBLEM 2: Shaking! I leave for work in the morning and my steering wheel shakes for the first 10 minutes of my 15 minute drive. You can see my coffee cup shaking, my Sirius Radio Receiver shaking...and also when im in the interstate theres a barely there shake that a new car should NOT have. Its definetly not a smooth ride

BIG PROBLEM 3: Steering! What steering? This isnt a constant problem, but its enough to scare the crap out of you! I went to make a left turn and the car kept going straight. The steering wheel was locked. It let go right at the last second and I about landed in a ditch! Then as I was backing out of my parking lot at my office i turned the wheel a bit and it locked again. This has happened about a dozen times in the past month. Luckily it hasnt caused me to wreck!

I received a recall in the mail a couple weeks ago for the harmonice balancer so could this have something to do with any of these problems Ive had or could the harmonic balancer be PROBLEM #4?

Also another annoying thing about my car is the rattle the sunroof shade makes. Is that even fixable?

Please let me know if any of you have had any of these problems and what had to be done! Thanks!

    Hello all,

I have a major problem with my g6 coupe.

I ordered it April 4th 2005 and received it 8/24/05.

With less than 200 miles the engine light came on. The dealer ran the computer check and the error code was a bad sensor. He reset it and off I went.

At about 500 miles the same thing happened. This time he ordered a replacement sensor and installed it. With just under 1000 miles it lit again and this time two engine sensors showed error codes.

So he looked up the VIN and received permission to upload new software to the engine on-board computer. 94% of the way through the "updated" software, the on-board computer died. It could not be restarted even after our dealer called the GM tech guy and tried everything they suggested.

They ordered the new computer and five minutes later were phoned back by the Regional Parts person saying that the computer is Back Ordered... about 8 days later, the dealer called me to say that they learned there are 20, G6 GTP computer parts in front of me all on BO.

Now my car is sitting in the dealership's garage awaiting a new engine computer.

So now I have no car and no time frame for when it will be addressed.

Don't know if anyone else has had this problem, but I wanted to share this.

BTW, I have owned GM prods for the past 7 years after I got my first Alero coupe, and never had any problems with either the Alero, or my Impala or my wife's MAXX.

    Thanks for listening.

In am flabbergasted by all the bad luck I am reading about with regards to the G6. From my extremely limited perspective, if my G6 is reliable I am so happy with it that I will have forgiven General Motors for the crap they produced a decade ago. I find the G6 to be exceptional. I have heard Impala and Grand Prix owners express the same sentiments. I sure hope your bad experiences are resolved to your satisfaction.

Honestly, I cam here looking for information for a friend of mine. She bought her G6 this summer and has had nothing but problems with it. First she was having an intermittent stalling problem with it. She took it to the dealer a few times and of course it wouldn't stall when they had it. Finally, it started running really bad and then stalled and wouldn't start again. The dealer towed it to the garage where they replaced the cadilatic converter. Mind you, this car has 800 miles on it. Now it's having a problem shifting between 1 and second gear. It acts like it hangs up there and it makes a really bad noise. She contacted GM and told them what was happening and their response was, "How do you know it's not shifting?" So far she really isn't happy with it, but I guess she's stuck with it

It's a base 05 V6 model. No isses at all. I was talking to her about it the other day. She is very happy with the car.

I'm sorry to here about all of the people who've experienced problems with their G6's. I for one have a GTP 6-Speed. I have never(knock on wood) had a problem with it. And I drive the living snot out of it. I'm up to 7700 miles and it is still rock solid. What we as comsumers have to understand is that there are going to be problems with every carmakers product(even Honda and Toyota are experiencing this). I feel that the issues that are being reported on Edmunds and other forums are isolated. Most people love their G6's. I wish the best of luck to those individuals experiencing hardships with their cars.

I was told by other mechanics said that it the brake pads that they used ceramic pads or metallic pads thats why they squeaks if you use semi metallic pads the squeaks goes away though. I brought my 06 G6 like in september i love it only the squeaking noises is getting into me I took it in last week to the dealership they said nothing was more and they claim the pads was "BURNISH" but as soon as i got my car back the squeaks comes back and I'm right back to the dealer this saturday. Some people said you have to live with the squeaking noise because of the sosphicated brakes but I'm not settling for this I will let u know what is the outcome this saturday. By the way when was ur G6 Made? did they fix all your problems yet I didn't have any leaking issues or remoted starter problem though :)
  • trevor_strevor_s Member Posts: 7
cshaffer! I have the same problem you describe as BIG PROBLEM 3!!! GM will not believe me, tell me if they can't reproduce it that they can't fix it. Well it almost killed me once a few weeks ago and then locked up the other day while I was backing out of a parking spot at my office, very similar to your experience. And those are the second and third times.

I've brought it to a dealership to have it diagnosed... they find nothing.

I am thinking of starting a lawsuit againt GM over this matter. Their only response to me is to sell the car, but how can I sell it without disclosing the power steering failures? And how can I drive it putting my life and my passengers' lives in jeopardy? Please, if you are interested email me or get in touch. This is serious stuff, I can't handle this car anymore.

I also have had many problems with my panoramic roof!!! I have had it repaired 6 times now. What happens is I get noises, which start as ticking sounds and escalate until you swear the roof is going to fall on you after you hit the next small bump.

This is not to mention the various reflectors, rubber stoppers, etc that have fallen off this car. This car has been the worst purchase I have ever made... and I have only had the car for 5 months.

I did. I installed an Eclipse http://www.eclipse-web.com/avn/avn5495.html and it is awesome. It's in the dealership as it always is, but I'll hook up a pic when it gets out in a few days.
  • trevor_strevor_s Member Posts: 7
I don't know what to say. I have the most disturbing relationship with my car. I love, and hate, this car.

It's a black 4dr GT with the panoramic roof. I really enjoy the ride, and even the roof when it is open. I like my car so much I put in beautiful Eclipse navigation system and a remote paging (2 way) alarm.

I hate the car because there is always something in the back of my mind while I'm driving it.

Most disturbingly is my very infrequest loss of power steering which scares me very much.

Second is my roof is constantly banging and squeaking. I have had my dealership 'fix' this problem six times now, and each time it gets fixed it starts doing it again a day later.

I have various other things; leather wearing through, reflectors and rubber stoppers missing, some sort of rattle from my engine which I assume to be a lose heat sheild.

I have owned this car for 5 months and can't stand it any longer. I have called GM, they aren't much help. They can fix it under warrenty, that's what they do. But what happens when it's out of warrenty? Do I have to pay to fix my roof every week?

I've tried to get it replaced, GM won't help me. My only option is to sell the car back to GM and take a huge loss. Obviously I'm not happy.

No one should purchase this car, not until GM admits to and fixes these problems. Obviously there are more people than myself with the very same problems, we really should all get together and take legal action against GM. They might notice us then, and perhaps FIX OUR CARS.

Anyways, I'm forced to take a huge hit on my car and trade it in this week. I already made the deal. I'm making one last call to GM Service Monday morning, maybe if I put the responsibility back on their shoulders they will at least take this car off the road. I drive a lot, and I often have family in the car. It's not worth the risk to continue to drive this car. There is no price too great when you are talking about human life, responsibility, and avoiding potential huge tradgedy. Even the $15,000 I am losing. Thanks GM. Never again.

Your last sentence has me questioning whether or not you actually own the car or work for toyota. The G6 was rated good by Consumer reports, a publication i do not agree with but many others do. This car also had a pretty smooth launch as far as that goes, and GM added features and power to this car.

If you got a lemon, then you should call the BBB and they can deal with GM. You do not have to take a huge loss. A firend's firend had one (read one) issue with a new cobalt, and after a few calls GM offered to trade his car up to a malibu for free. He is suing his dealer for now dealing with the problem, by the way, so you might wanna look into that.

The only major problem with this car is the steering issue which GM should resolve if they know whats good for them. Luckily it is a rare occurance but when something like that does occur people are going to be understandibly upset and voice it out. What you don't hear are the 100,000 (or soon to be) others who have not expirienced this problem and have no need to go on the boards.

The roof going wrong is b/c it was sourced from Fiat. Italians are not the romans they used to be after all. There union problem is even bigger over there, so fiat for the most part makes crap.

You problems with a "GM" car can occur with a toyota, Nissan or Honda. What are you going to do then, say Never again to them too? You got a lemon, if GM won't help you SUE! This car really is good in style and features. Quality has yet to be seen but so far it seems good. I am sorry for you trouble (no, i don't work for them lol) but it does not mean you made a mistake for buying a GM. You got a bad car and that could happen with any make.
  • trevor_strevor_s Member Posts: 7
I actually own the car, trust me. I'm giving them one last call Monday and then I will have to proceed with legal action if they don't co-operate. You are right. And I may just have to sue the dealership as well.

    I dunno, horrible experience.

I recently purchased a '06 G6 GT Sedan in August. Being it my first new car purchase I did some research. First and for most, I needed a car I could fit in. Six foot seven and all legs narrows down my selection quite a bit. I first tried out the G6 at the auto show and found it deceptively roomy for its size. Surprisingly I found I could actually fit into the drivers seat with some room to spare.
I rented a V6 sedan over a weekend and found no major issues.
So I bit the bullet. :surprise:
There have had no major problems for 4k miles driven so far, less the vanity mirror cover breaking. The car is exciting to drive. Virtually no body roll in turns and plenty of acceleration from a dead stop. I did notice some torque steer even before I read the posts here, but I never considered it as a major deficiency. The gas mileage has been around 27 mpg overall with a combination of both city and highway driving.
I was alarmed however to read the posts here about the power steering failures. So far this has not occurred.
The gas gauge anomaly posted here has occurred. Most gas gauges with a low fuel indicator light tend to bob above and below Empty turning the light on and off. What I have noticed is the electronic G6 gauge goes to Empty and stays there. It does not bib back over Empty. Twice I have fill the tank at low fuel and only put in 13 gallons into a so called 16 gallon tank.
When looking at the G6 with the Pana roof I just could not be convinced that all those moving parts would be reliable over the long run. I opted for the regular powerslide sun roof. In addition the Pana roof takes away more of my much needed headroom than the regular sun roof.

Electric Blue has been great so far.

    :)
  • 62vetteefp62vetteefp Member Posts: 6,043
GM is very conservative with the empty on the gas gauge. They want to make sure that when the light comes on or goes into the red zone you have enough gas to get to a station. Due to variation in the readout system this means you can often have a lot more gas than you think. My wife always wants to fill up when it goes below 1/16th. You can go a long ways on that 1/16th.

why is GM so conservative? Because they do not want to disatisfy customers by running out of gas. Of course they also do not want to get sued. You know, tank just said empty and I ran out and got hit walking to the gas station. GM is the #1 target in the US.
  • exalteddragon1exalteddragon1 Member Posts: 729
You know, I hope the sute works out for you, but I thought of another thing... b4 threatenning them you might try one last move.

Try to get GM to replace your G6. If it does qualify as a lemon that should not be a problem. Trading in for a new G6 means you get a brand new car, it takes less time for you instead of suing and GM knows it would be a customer service victory so its better for them too.

I know of people in the GTO board who had GM replace a car.

In my firends firend case with the cobalt, it was the dealer who would not give up a new car, GM did agree to it. So he is suing the dealer. If after that GM does not budge then sue them.

Whats the worst that can happen, you get a GTP?

GUYS! I CAN DUPLICATE THE POWER STEERING FAILURE!!!
  • h_sh_s Member Posts: 3
    Hello again,

With regard to my problem quoted above, last Wednesday, my dealership told me to call the Pontiac Customer Service hotline (1-866-932-4368) and explained my situation.

A very kind and friendly woman took down all my info and said she would folow up. Since that time, the dealership called and said that the part would be in on 11/04. The Pontiac Cust Service gal called back and said when the part comes in, the dealership would have a check to reimburse me for my October payment.

Well they called today and said the part came in, that they downloaded the software to the new on-board engine computer (held their collective breath when they did that, but it went just fine) and said they had a check for me.

I picked up my beauty and gave it a hard drive and all is well...

So you see, things do sometimes work out.

    Thanks for listening everyone.

I am very glad that your issue was resolved the way it was. Many people are just too furious to blame GM, and never buy American again just because they had a problem with the car (yes, it is severe). Yet when those same people have the same problem with a toyota or honda they just think nothing of it, or make excuses like... "I hit a huge bump the day before so"

The way it works is, the automaker with the most to loose is going to do everything they can to help you to get and keep your business. If more people tried and persisted they would find good reason to buy the car you want, not the car someone esle wants you to get.

I know it does not go so smoothly with everyone, but GM realy is trying, I think everyone at the company with enough sence to spell there own name knows the company is in serious trouble, and is working at hard as possible to keep there jobs. This should translate into improved build quality, finish and customer service.

Hopefully no one has any problems with there cars, Thankfully the G6 is limited in its scope of problems, because it really has style and content. That new 6-speed auto should improve fuel economy as soon as it gets here.

So, anyone with a GTP care to tease the rest of us with photos? People on the ownersclub are wishing they held out for the GTP!

I also have a black 06 G6 GTP which has paint blems. Appears as white or grayish in color and shows up terribly in the sunlight! Have taken back to the dealer twice and they had it buffed. Have not picked up yet, but rode by after close and at dark. When my lights hit the car I was nearly sick to my stomach to see all of the swirl spots where they haved tried to cover the spots. A closer look revealed the spots to still be there. Waiting to see?

  • exalteddragon1exalteddragon1 Member Posts: 729
you know, instead of what car and driver say is number one all the time.

Thats a nice GTP, the twin tail pipes make me forget the solara-ish back end.

    Anyone saw the SEMA G6?
    image
How many here would buy one if i told you its got ZO6 heads, 270hp and a cat-back exhaust? Meybe they could offer it as an option like the Firebird Ram Air?

    NOW THAT'S A GTP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The body kit along is worth the price of admission
  • allfiredupallfiredup Member Posts: 736
I saw these pics from SEMA a few days ago on Autoblog. This thing is smokin'! The only thing I didn't care for is the rear wing spoiler, which you can hardly see in this pic. It's kinda gaudy looking from behind. The rest of it, especially wheels, front end and hood scoops look perfect.

Call it a G6 GXP maybe? Or, even better, G6 Formula!

I own a 2006 G6. It is as good as my Camry and superior to my Sentra. You must be an employee of Honda or Toyota. You are a tool bud, I had a 2005 G6 GT and now have a 2006 G6 GTP. I've driven GM all my life. But the ELECTRONIC STEERING HAS MASSIVE PROBLEMS.

    Thank you.
  • techboytechboy Member Posts: 6
Go to myCarStats.com and have a look at the number of complaints posted with regards to the G6. Then have a look at the number of complaints posted for my other vehicle, a 2003 Camry with the 6 cylinder. I was surprised by what I saw. Toyota isn't building them like they used to. And neither is GM.
  • techboytechboy Member Posts: 6
Your method for duplicating the steering issue is to turn the wheel back and forth from one extreme to another at least 20 times. This unnatural and extreme use of the electric motor assisting the steering is abuse. I can cause anything I have in my home to fail if I abuse it. If the car steering was so unsafe, why did you get another G6?
I think I hear your Japanese master calling you.
  • 62vetteefp62vetteefp Member Posts: 6,043
I would not call this abuse. It does not normally happen in real life but not abusive. I wonder what is really happening? What is the failure mode we are discussing? After 20 turns the steering wheel locks up or something else?

G6 according to Consumer Reports has average reliability and is recommended for whatever it's worth. I'm not a big fan of the magazine.

    end quote

How would they have such data? The car is new, as in " first ever G6." Would take at the least a year to know if it is half way screwed together right, and several years to really know how good an auto it is.

Not every 2005 G6 GT has steering problems. Mine doesn't. I have 10k miles on my car so far, no trips to the dealer for any repairs.

I haven't had time to return to dealer but when I call they just keep giving me the same answer. (We can repaint the car but it won't look nearly as nice as the factory paint) I guess I'll just live with it. Has anyone seen grill inserts for the G6 that are similiar to the ones you can buy for the GTO?

One of my best friends just bought a 06 V6 G6 today. Going to check it out and take for a drive on the weekend, can't wait. I have wanted to drive a G6 for a while now.

after reading so much on the G6 Owners Club site about the apparent differences between the V6 and the GT or GTP, you might want to hold your comment on the G6 until you have driven the GT and GTP. i have a GT and it handles great, but i have read where the std and V6 models handle like an old wheelbarrow....as you probably know, suspension can make a world of difference!!
  • nortsr1nortsr1 Member Posts: 1,060
    like an old wheelbarrow....Please

The steering wheel locks up, and sometimes you can feel a popping sensation like the assist is working against you. It is a very strange feeling, and it randomly happens at various levels of intensity.

I WISH everyone here would stop trash talking me about a [non-permissible content removed] master and all this garbage about me hating GM. It is much the other way around. I'm not trying to trash a G6 or GM. I went out and bought another one, a GTP (because it has hydrolic steering, I dumped the panoramic roof for a regular one and went 2 door with a 6 sp... a real car). And my new G6 GTP is amazing, I love it!

I'm trying to tell everyone my problem with the GT and the electronic steering, and GM not helping me. Aand if there are others we should get GM to resolve these problems. Steering failure is a very serious issue.

It seriously almost killed me. My dealership was of no help and started to try and charge me for rentals. No one at GM customer service helped me, only repeated the fact that GM will fix the car if they can duplicate the problems which they never could. Somehow I finally managed to figure out how to reliably present the failure. But it was the night before I picked up my new car.

I called and dealt with various reps at GM service, and one in particular was assigned to my case who told me if I felt unsafe in the vehicle because they couldn't repair it, that I should make the best deal I can on a trade in. So I did, and now I'm going to sue GM and perhaps the dealership I purchased my orginal G6 GT at for making me take that loss. It shouldn't be my problem that the car scares the hell out of me, almost kills me, and no one can diagnose the problem.

Another dealership plans to resell this car, it is a deathtrap, and I even explained it all to this new dealership when I was trading it in. They don't care.. I have even told GM I would like them to come look at the car even after I sold it back to a dealership. I feel terrible that I know there is a deadly car out there, and that is on my concious. I even gave them the option of fixing it if they could, and just telling me when it was fixed. They told me it's not my problem anymore and to leave them alone.

    Sad... the whole way through.

Soooo... don't buy a used black G6 GT with the panoramic roof. It has large holes in the tweeter grills where I mounted aftermarket Eclipses, and some screw holes in the back of the rear seats where I mounted various stereo equipment...

  • vanman1vanman1 Member Posts: 1,397
I was wrong, I thought my buddy got a V6 G6. In fact is was a base 4 cyl. model. I was most excited as I wanted to see if the car had enough power. It did. The 2.4L is a nice peppy engine with the VVT. The plastic rim covers and lack of ABS didn't suit me but I'd be more than fine with a 2.4 G6 with a few options.
  • bigdaddycoatsbigdaddycoats Member Posts: 1,058
today. The more I think about this car, the more I really like it. Many of the complaints I had with the G6 have been laid to rest with the GTP.
1- I wanted a manual - got one that is slick shifting and east to use. When is the last time GM had a FWD manual V6?
2- Real steering system - check, the GTP feels much more connected to driver inputs with the road. Nicely weighted and the 18" wheels look great.
3- Pretty fast. Engine pulls very easily in 2nd and 3rd gear. Overall fairly quiet as well.

I'll post more comments tomorrow. I would really like the major mags and Edmunds to do some testing. Not perfect, but fun to drive at relatively affordable GM prices.
  • gonogogonogo Member Posts: 879
I was driving when there were no automatics, all I have now are automatics,I don't think shifting is fun. :)

Yeap, around town, shifting is not so much in the way of fun. Now out on the open road, and on those curvy country roads, you do have more control over the car, and it is fun. Well, most fun includes RWD with that shifter, but it is hard to find these days at reasonable prices. The GTP doesn't have electric assist steering, so that is the only one I would consider in the G6 line-up. As for which transmission is best, I'd say it is a draw - depends on personal preference, where driven most, and if you like the FWD and manual combo.

Maybe the Camaro will be RWD :shades: Oh heck, I should just get a 2002 Camaro SS, and keep it a couple decades = instant classic. In twenty years, we may have to tell the kids about a company that once made autos, way back when. Hope it survives.
