The BMW step has an "adaptive" feature to "learn" the way you drive and program itself accordingly. It will take a bit of driving to get there. I never experience any hesitation in its throttle response even in my '02 325 which has 30 fewer horses. If you put it in the "sport" mode, then definitely you won't have any hesitation even the first time you drive the car. The '06 325 has plenty of power and the handling is superb. You will be happy with the car.

If I want to top off my oil what type/brand should I use? I know BMW has the castrol logo printed in their brochures- should that be an indication of the brand to use? I don't think topping off the engine with a 1/2 qt. of a good synthetic brand will matter but what do I know? Let me know what you guys think...
  • div2div2 Member Posts: 2,580
BMW sells their own synthetic which is a Castrol oil-and it is NOT the same as Syntec. I prefer Mobil 1 0W-40, which also meets BMW's Longlife oil specificications.

Is your electronic "dipstick" telling you need to add oil ? I am personally leary about overfilling the E90 with no traditional dipstick.

yeah I was given a deal when I bought my 330i takeoffs from a dealer.Shop around for pricing. They slide right on and use a set nut. Will take you seconds to install.

Once you have your Vin# and it is shipped.http://schedule.2wglobal.com/AppTracking/searchCargo.do?trackType=Auto and enter your Vin# for your cargo ID. You can see your ships progress across.

The adaptive feature sounds interesting. I guess a car on the lot being driven by many potential buyers like me has no chance to get into any kind of groove, so that might account for my reaction to the throttle response.

I had the car long enough to feel how well it tracks on entry and exit curving ramps, and a few other curvy roads. Pretty nice. I was also very impressed with its quietness at 70 mph on the Interstate.

I've been following the discussion here on the run-flat tires, and that seems a little inconclusive at this point. Someone says Bridgestone can repair them, while the owner's manual says that's verboten. Hmmm.

    Hola David

Another coincidence: I've the spakling graphite, too. I notice a brown hue (variant on the purple, I guess) from time-to-time and it's growing on me. The color appeals to my wife more than me (I'd have gone for silver).

The host of the actual Buying experience forum apparently doesn't believe that problems encountered in the time frame immediate to the purchase is relevant to the buying experience (?), so I'll move this thread here -- per davidd3, perhaps this will offer some precautions to buyers.

    I purchased a 2006 330i and a 2005 X3 3.0 from the same dealership (Greenwich). Here's my experience to date:

    - vehicles were supposed to be delivered in the first week of August; they arrived, were "prepped" and delivered Sept.1 (obviously to get the sales on the books for Aug.).

    Immediate problems:
    X3
    - Sat not installed
    - Adaptive headlights not calibrated properly
    - All-weather floor mats, emermgency road-side kit and first aid kit missing
    - Manual missing
    - Dealer unable to deliver plates; wind up using dealer plate for the next 10 days
    - BMW Assist not setup
    330i
    - Trim not as ordered
    - Sat not installed
    - Alarm not installed
    - Adaptive headlights not calibrated properly
    - All-weather floor mats, emermgency road-side kit and first aid kit missing
    - Manual missing
    - Ddealer unable to deliver plates; wind up using dealer plate for the next 10 days

    Week 1:
    - dealer arranges pick-up of X3 to resolve all problems but is only able to swap out the dealer plates
    - ditto 330i

    Week 2:
    - dealer picks-up X3 to install Sat and replace other missing parts; returns car with improperly installed Sat.

Outstanding problems 3 weeks after delivery:
    X3:
    - no Sat
    - no mats
    - no BMW Assist
    - no emergency roadside kit
    - no first aid kit
    - many miles put on the car back/forth to dealership

    330i
    - no Sat
    - no emergency roadside kit
    - no first aid kit
    - no alarm
    - no mats (A/S)

These are not cheap vehciles, and the much-celebrated BMW service has so far been completely disappointing. There's no attention to detail (how do you install something and not test it?) and the dealer is obviously putting their own interest ahead of their clients (don't promise to deliver to me on Monday that which you cannot deliver until Friday, if you have any interest in my repeat business). My treatment at VW was white-gloved by comparison to this.

When the oil lamp came on in my E46 last month I just took it to the dealer and had him 'top it off'. That way it didn't cost me a dime. :P

I recall that he used Castrol brand synthetic.
  • designmandesignman Member Posts: 2,129
Wow, sorry to hear your problems Tim. Greenwich is my dealer and I have the opposite experience. However I firmly believe dealers can change overnight depending on ownership and their MO with employees. In general I have noticed a pretty high job turnover among sales people and service management employees at many dealers so, if good policy and direction doesn’t come from the top, I think the service quality can blow like the wind.

Aside from that, I don’t know why you accepted those vehicles with things like sat, alarm, trim and manual missing. I would have put my foot down right off the bat. Good luck, it doesn't sound pleasant.
  • timnytimny Member Posts: 142
Basically, I was promised the missing elements would be taken care of the same week we took delivery, and so I went along. The cars had been so delayed, too, that we'd simply had it with waiting, waiting, waiting.

Other things -- like the alarm -- didn't surface at first b/c the sales agent didn't have time to go through the complete overview of the car with me; consequently, as I went through the manual myself, item by item, I discovered things that were not as they should be.

I've been patient. I even tried to see things from the dealer's perspective (i.e., apprciate that they were "trying"). But I don't think it's everyday even a BMW dealership sells two cars at the same time to the same person. Frankly, I should be getting better service because that's what I've paid for. Word spreads fast, and my wife and I are relaying exactly what happened when people ask about our buying experience.

    (Sorry to vent!)

The cars had been so delayed, too, that we'd simply had it with waiting, waiting, waiting.

I understand your frustration with all the stuff that should have been done prior to delivery..... Just wanted to point out, though, that the car being delayed and having to wait for it wasn't anything the dealer or salesperson could control. August is a slow time for production in Europe since entire countries over there go on vacation at the same time in the late summer. At least the 330i came in before Sept 1, or else you would have had to pay the 3-Series price increase! Anyways, my point is that if the dealers had their druthers, they'd have as many cars in stock as possible and not have to wait for orders to come in at all! Nothing they can do to speed up the process.....

Since the 2006 3-series comes standard with the RF tires, it has no spare. Does anyone know if it comes with a jack and lug wrench? If you want to install mounted snows, and they're not RF snows, you then have to lug around one of the RF tire/wheels as a spare, and possibly a jack and lug wrench too, if the car doesn't come with one?

    ***Mooselook***
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,341
No jack or lug wrench is included.

i live in sothern california and the dealers here are charging aderttising fee(MACO) as part of the invoice.. the 330i which i wana buy has a msrp of 43345 and invoice 39730 . but the dealer invoice shows 40060 because that includes the (MACO)fee. so is that right? the reason i am asking is because i only want to pay $1000 over invoice so should i go with the dealer invouce or the edmunds invoice? please help guys since no body replied to me in the PRICES PAID FORUM. :confuse:

I thought I was missing the alarm, first aid kit and emergency kit too. I was told it was only for European Delivery cars because it's required there. It's extra if you want them. Same with the alarm. Not included. Wired for the alarm, but does not come with it. I have a fully loaded 330i - pnly things I did not get are the Active Cruise and the Window Shades - and the Alarm, 1st Aid kit and Emerg. kit. Oh - and we bought a 7 series and my friend went in and bought a 645i because of me. It took a few weeks to get some of my final things installed (Chrome wheels, trunk tray, and bluetooth working and I am missing the manual for the idrive too). They know me because we've bought a total of 5 cars over the years from this dealer. They told me they are not able to keep as many cars in inventory because the allocations are less and so when the ordered cars come in, they have to deliver them quickly to make the customers happy.

I think we'll see the day soon that you will not be able to buy a car off the lot. All custom orders practically.

Actually, the best place for that question would be the discussion at this link: Advertising Fees.

That's located on our Smart Shopper board - you might want to peruse the list of discussions there. You'll probably find some other helpful topics.

I would like sometime between may and july to purchase a 325i via ED (as I have family in Europe)
When should I start contacting the dealer about it? I live in the BayArea

The car that I want is a:
    325i
    barrique red with Dakota leather

    premium package
    nav/I drive system
    and maybe comfort access
    manual

    is the sport package essential?

    Also any suggestions about ED?
  • selmselm Member Posts: 122
They require 90 day notice. So I started about 2 weeks before my 90 days. I called about 5 dealers, told them what I wanted, what I expected to pay. They either said, we can deal or no way. Once we reached an agreement, the filled out a preliminary purchase order and asked to reserve the date. I did it all in a weekend.

My only option is the sport package, so yes, I think it essential, but it depends on the driver. I think if you are getting an auto it doesn't matter, but since you are getting the manual, look into the zsp. It is your money, let us know what you decide.

My suggestion on ED is don't drop your car off in Italy, better yet don't even drive there unless you want to be worried about your car the entire time. I stuck to Germany and Austria.

    Hi Tim,

I haven't had my car long enough to fully appreciate all the color variants of the Sparkling Graphite depending upon the light. I do like the color, most of the time that is.

I'm saving the reason why I haven't had my car long enough for another post.

    Tim,

Geez, I've had probems with Greenwich too, though not nearly to the extent of your problems.

Today my 330i is 3 weeks old. It has spent a total of 8 days in the service center, so far. I just got it back last night after a full week of fixing the malfunctioning adaptive headlights for a second time (the first time they thought they'd fixed it, but they didn't). At first they thought it would be a same day job. Then they realized they had to order a part (a DSC Sensor), which made it appear to be a next day job. The part came on time, but then they had computer problems. It got to the point where my wife sensed irritation when she would make a daily call to inquire if the car would be ready for her to pick up after work. Their attitude was pretty much this - don't call us, we'll call you; in the meantime, just stay in the loaner car. Well, my wife and I had to make daily stops at the gas station to put gas in the loaner car that we thought we'd have for a day but ended up having for a week.

I'm looking forward to my weekend driving.

Doh, if I do ED, my destination is northern italy as that's where my friend lives.

hi guys i just ordered a Titanium silver 330i with beige interior.the dealer was quiet surprized when i ordered it since he said that is a very odd combination.has anyone of u guys seen this combination? i really like this combo but if not i may go with my second choice which is Titanium silver with gray interior. please help me make this choice
  • bdr127bdr127 Member Posts: 950
I've never seen this combination.... Silver/Beige is generally regarded as an oddball combination. Since you are ordering, I'm sure the dealer is afraid you'll back out on the car and they'll be stuck with the oddball. To each his own, I guess.... ;)
  • davidd3davidd3 Member Posts: 582
I've never seen anything but gray and black with the silver. I've never seen silver with beige (not only on the new 3, but on any car for that matter). But so long as you are ordering a BMW, you can order whatever color combinations you want. If you've seen a beige interior in a silver car and know that you like it, then go ahead and order what YOU like the best. If you haven't seen it, then you'd be taking a chance, in which case you might want to stick with a more traditional combination (gray or black).
  • carnaughtcarnaught Member Posts: 3,582
The SC430 Lexus in silver is offered with a saddle or beige (ecru) interior, so this combination is not unheard of. While it's not a "perfect" combination, gray interiors are bland IMHO. The beige 3-series interior exhibits a nice contrast with the wood options offered but the carpets are very light and hard to keep clean.
  • selmselm Member Posts: 122
Northern Italy is not as bad as Rome, Naples, etc. But, you still must realize that some Italian dude is going to drive your car to Germany.
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
Oh you mean drop the car off in italy. no, no, no. I'll drive back to germany and leave it at a german port.

Hi all, I was wondering it the 3.5mm cable to connect a MP3 player to the audio input in the arm rest was the same as a RCA plug? Someone mentioned before that the cables are available at BMW dealers, but are much cheaper at Radio Shack. I plan on buying a Dell pocket DJ mp3 player, so I am not sure if both ends should be Plugs (male) or if one end should be a Jack. Any information including where it can be purchased online is appreciated. Thanks.
  • davidd3davidd3 Member Posts: 582
Both ends are male. I picked one up at Radio Shack for about $4.

Guys - Did the new 3-Series lose the iPod connectivity option that the previous generation offered?
  • bmwe90bmwe90 Member Posts: 16
I just picked up that cord the other day. I got it from radio shack for $5, its a 1/8" stereo cord with two male ends. I don't know if I'm supposed to do this (if I am I'm sorry host) but the model number is 42-2387. The quality is not as good as a CD for some reason. If any of you guys know how to make it sound better through the car stereo let me know...
  • bmwe90bmwe90 Member Posts: 16
Thats what I understand. I called both BMW USA and I talked to an Apple supervisor when ordering my new ipod nano and they both told me there is no such option available on the new 3. They both knew, however, that it was offered on the last generation. They should have offered it on the new model- and for a nominal fee (maybe $100) but I guess I'm dreaming again. ;)
  • marcpotashmarcpotash Member Posts: 6
MACO fees are a valid invoice cost that the dealer pays. But document processing fees are not and are just additional profit.
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
Maco is the group advertising fees that a dealer pays. The cost should be part of the final negotiated price. A dealer should not tack it on after the price is negotiated. MACO is a cost of doing business. It's akin to buying a stereo at Best Buy and when you check out they tell you there's an added $25 advertising fee not mentioned in the original price. It's sneaky to add it on at the end after negotiations are completed.

Some say it's not profit. That's not true.

You negotiate a sale price $2000 off sticker - we'll say 35k, 37k msrp. That means the dealer has 35k coming to him. With the sale the dealer must pay for the car, the electricity, the salesman's comission, and advertising/MACO. So lets say after all that the dealer has a net profit of $200. Well if the dealer suddenly tacks on a $350 MACO fee that extra $350 goes directly to padding his bottomline. Do not for a second believe that MACO is an extra fee. It's a cost of doing business. And it should not be tacked on after the handshake for the deal.

i am thiinking of ordering a sparkling graphite with beige interior. is this a comon combination or odd? i havent seen this combo on the dealership.all i saw was black or gray with sparkling graphite. and also is the Sparkling Graphite a popular color since i see in every bmw adds and pictures.to me it changes shades during different lighting conditions.

They could offer the integrated iPod connectivity still, but I'm not holding my breath. When Steve Jobs introduced the iPod nano, he mentioned that scads of carmakers, including Acura and Honda, are now planning to offer the integration.
  • wstevecwstevec Member Posts: 126
Thanks, thats great information, especially the Radio Shack part number, I had a different one. By the way would one of those Belkin FM Transmitters (around $40) work any better? Perhaps someone out there has tried it. By the way, I am finally taking delivery of my 325xi this week, I was one of those nuts who put a deposit down way back in January. I can't wait! Thanks again for your help.

I am considering buying a 2006 BMW 330xi which is all wheel drive model being delivered this fall. I am being quoted $38,500 before options. For options, I have selected premium package ($2,200), automatic transmission ($1,275), winter pakage ($850), Comfort Access ($500), Personal Distance ($350), Sirius ($595). To these, dealer has added destination charge ($695) and paint ($474). Total comes to MSRP of $45,440. He is then offering me $1,200 off for pre-tax price of $44,240. With 6% tax and $155 tags, final price comes to $47,048.

I have not owned a BMW before as I have had the Mercedes C580 which I have liked and which I bought several years ago in high 30's. I was not expecting to have to pay over $47,000 to get a BMW 330. Am I over optioning the car that it is this high? Do I need a 330 versus a 325? I want the all wheel drive but I expected to be in low versus high 40's. Is this a fair price offered by my dealer?

Any advice would be helpful. I like this car but don't want to get a bad deal.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,341
    A couple of points:

    * A fully loaded 330i (not AWD) stickers over $50,000.
    * I assume you meant C280. What year? Prices have gone up since then.
    * You don't "need" the 330 vs. the 325, but with both an automatic and AWD, performance will suffer more on the 325. That said, depending on the year of your C-class, the 325i may be in the same arena as it.
    * You should be able to get a lot more than $1200 off on a loaded 330xi. Try getting internet quotes from several dealers. Check out the Prices paid boards here on Edmund's.
  • carnaughtcarnaught Member Posts: 3,582
I have this combination and in general like it very much. As alluded to, the color changes with amount of direct/indirect sunlight but I do not like the purplish hue it occasionally exhibits. The beige interior with poplar wood to me looks especially great, but those light carpets are not easy to keep clean. Bottom line is that ext./ inter.color combinations are extremely subjective. I really like the terracotta (?sp) interior.
  • designmandesignman Member Posts: 2,129
Colors… ah-h-h the spectrum is spectacular!

Amir… glad to see you exploring colors because there a lot of combos that work nicely even though they are not popular. And they are not popular because people are afraid to order them and the company is afraid to stock them. They’re looking for sure sales bets. But if you are leasing I suggest going with your heart's desire because resale will not enter the picture.

Beige goes with anything but I don’t care for it with very dark colors. It’s kind of like wearing a dark suit with white or light shoes.

Silver and neutral grays also go with anything.

I think your first choice of Silver/Beige is a good one, real good one. Even though you hardly see this combo on BMWs (I have seen it several times) it is more common on other cars including Ferraris although the Ferrari silvers I have seen are darker in density and have some hue (color) to them. BMW silvers are pretty colorless.

Combos that really interests me are Titanium/Terra, Sparkling Graphite/Terra and also your choice of Sparkling Graphite/Beige However, I need to see these in the flesh or ample-size swatches to see what actual hues are in both the paint and leather. I believe Silver/Terra would also be a good one.

On thing that turns me off is the Black/Color splits in the interiors so a case can be made for anything that comes in color unison. Interiors are busy enough with texture and woods without having to slather on color splits.

Whatever you decide, remember, the most sophisticated car combos have subtle complimentary (and sometimes contrasting) color. Why are they the most sophisticated? For the same reason that color TV is more sophisticated than B&W TV.

You can also make the point that B&W photography is sophisticated. True, but the texture and layout of the subject had better very darn interesting a la Ansel Adams and other notables. As such, a spectacular car design will always look good in Silver and Black.

Yep, I like every color in the spectrum and could see going with any one they make as long as it gets the proper interior because there are indeed some bad combos. Can’t go through them all because this would go on forever, and it’s enough of a rant as it is!

There is a jack under the armrest in the new 3-Series you can plug an ipod into.... Am I missing something here?
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,341
The E46 and other cars we were talking about have integrated iPod connectivity available, meaning that you can change songs, playlists, etc., via the steering wheel. It's a nicer touch--albeit more expensive--than a simple auxiliary input jack.

what are the main functions of the i-drive (besides a/c, radio, nav)

can it me programmed to warm up the cabin in the morning at a specific time?
  • carnaughtcarnaught Member Posts: 3,582
"what are the main functions of the i-drive (besides a/c, radio, nav) "

The functions include audio: setting stations (12 for each band) and speed sensitive volume, setting Nav.and its screen's options, setting car options such as how to lock and unlock the doors, how long to keep on the lights and door knob external courtesy lights and programing of two of the steering wheel mounted buttons. It also controls the Bluetooth making of calls. Anyone else? Am I missing something?

Not being an electronics greek or gearhead, I have found the I-drive not to be difficult and have found it to be fairly intuitive. The only thing I have against it is the need to go through the menu to do simple things which it would be nice to go directly to. One example would be the inability to select a radio station not in order when scrolling (as is done with the steering wheel up or down buttons). It would be nice to directly select the button of the station you want when you want it in addition to the wheel buttons.

There's a place for an i-pod (or cell phone) with an on and off switch for ventilation to it.
