I wouldn't do it ... I was merely musing. I don't put that many miles on a car (7K per year) and my 35 has more power than I'll ever need or use. For the same dough as the base 45 w/ nav I got all the extra goodies ... they have more appeal to me than the extra second getting to 60 (I haven't gotten there yet in the first 1500 miles).
I do the same kind of driving. Started ~ 13 for the first tank, then over the next 1500 miles each tank was a bit better. Present tank showing me 17.3 and my driving habits haven't changed one bit. Just loosening up, breaking in. Tires feel less rigid as well ... although it might just be me getting accustomed to the harsher ride than my Caddy.
I have some unanswered questions:
1) I notice there are exterior door handle buttons only on the front doors. Does this mean if you have rear seat passengers you need to unlock the doors via remote/interior switch to let them in?
2) When leaving the vehicle, if you walk away without doing anything, does the car lock itself (and if so, how far does one have to be for that to happen)?
3) On the same note, if you leave the car running and walk away (with the key), will it shut itself off?
4) (slightly unrelated) someone posted that there is no autolock (meaning locking when driving away) feature on the M. Is this true?? If so it's a MAJOR oversight on Infiniti's part!
I'm thrilled about the new M and I hope they find me a diamond graphite/bourbon M35 as soon as possible!
That said, that is the "dummies" version. The process is intended to machine the piston rings into the cylinder walls perfectly so that no oil or gases pass. It is not a boolean process that is suddenly complete at 1200 miles.
My opinion is that break-in should be a progressive process. During the first 600 miles I follow the instructions to the letter of the law and keep the RPM's varied and low. The next few hundred I keep the RPM's at or under 4000, but start to select gears to keep the RPM's up at sustained 3000 - 4000 levels under light load. This gets a lot of "machining" of the parts without high pressures on the rings (due to light load).
At 800 miles I start to gradual move up the RPM spectrum and add load.
At 1000 I start to put some real load on the engine, but not totally kick.
At 1100, hell, I'm done and ready to have fun.
My 2 cents.
1. Hitting the button on the driver side twice unlocks all the doors.
2. To lock the vehicle, you need to click the button once or use the key fob unlock button
3. Twice with valet parking, I left my car running and took the key in with me to the restaurant. The car kept running until they parked it near by.
4. There is no auto lock on the infiniti
I have an M45 black with stone interior. I love it and have 5300 miles on it now.
To clarify, the car will continue running if you walk away with the key, and keep running until it is shut off by the button? Or do you think there is a time limit that it will run for without a key, or is it proximity (and you happened to be close enough to the car when you were in the restaurant)?
I assume that for safety reasons, the car would never shut itself off when not in park, so the proximity idea is probably wrong...
Congrats on the M45 -- I think just about everyone seems to agree with your experience!

Thanks, that gives me a better feeling. My car rides tight and I am fine with the ride out of the box. What caddy were you driving?
One additional point, the passenger side also has a button on it for entry as well.
You will enjoy this car, it is fairly incredible IMO.
You posted that you got $1000 over cost from a dealer in/near the Bay Area a few weeks ago (msg #2900). I am currently working deals on for an M35 as well, and I'm wondering what dealer it was that offered $1000 over cost.
Also, does cost = invoice?
Any help is appreciated!.
The MF & Res. numbers change each month, but your lease should be about $650-660 WITH tax. Not a penny more... If you need my dealer, please post again and I will tell you who and where he is....
I had an '01 DeVille, 35K miles when I traded it in. Had one minor electrical problem in year two but otherwise the car was very un-Detroit-like ... trouble free. There was no reason to jettison it other than boredom ... and finding a car with the sex appeal to get me excited again. This M-car did the trick, but I must confess it was the bells and whistles (tech/aero/sport-journey) that got me to open my wallet.
Latest tank showing 17.4.
And as posted here earlier, I'm going in for an oil change this week now that I've passed the 1500 mile market ... just to be on the safe side. I recall years ago the "break in oil" was supposed to be changed out at 1K ... and I do take care of my cars. And I have the service done by the dealership --- and here's a scary but true incident that just occured to one of my associates. He has a Porsche Boxter, 48K miles and 4 months out of warranty. The engine BLEW ... a $13K replacement, but having had ALL of his service done by Porsche they gave him a brand new engine for the cost of the tow job. On a lesser scale my Caddy dealer covered a multitude of wear and tear items for eight full months after my warranty had expired because they had done ALL of its service. Total cost to me would have been ~ $3K. These were things I didn't even notice ... but the guy who does tthe weekly bathing of our cars drove it and identified some suspension and engine performance issues that never caught my attention.

I just had my first full day on the rtoad with the car. I see what you mean about the ride as compared to a caddy. I guess the 45 series tiers are designed to give the feeling of control and road feel. And they do. Ride is by no means uncomfortable, but its been 11 years in Volvo's and Saabs since I had a car that was sporty. Has an 1988 M3 BMW and it rode similar. The M35 Blows it away with the bells and whistles, plus I can take 3 friend with me without an issue.
I hope you enjoy yours as much as i enjoy mine.
Great car & the electronics are superb.
Im sure there must be someone who posts on this board who can top that mileage. By the way, I am averaging just over 19mpg with roughly 40% city and 60% highway miles
On the Infiniti M can you also use a key or is it just pushbutton? I know on some cars, the key can be used as a backup.
Yes, the key fob contains the lock, unlock feature as well as an emergency allert that will flash the lights and honk the horn (kind of like a panic button)
diesel3,
it's gonna be tough to email you so long as your email address is private
I cross shopped 4 dealers, Atlantic in Lynbrook, Competition in Smithtown, Great Neck (Manhasset?) Infiniti, and Infiniti of Massapequa.
It came down to Competition and Atlantic. Don't bother going to Manhasset or Massapequa, they are smaller and much much less willing to deal, AND they wind up getting most of their cars from Competition anyway (it's the largest by far.)
The car I wanted, M35x, blk/blk, journey, tech, splsh, spoiler, was at Competition, so I was literally cross shopping Atlantic vs. Competition over the same exact car. When it came down to the wire, even though Atlantic is much closer to my home, they were just not willing to even MATCH, much less beat, the numbers, that Competition had on the table ($47,849 as described above.)
This, coupled with Competition's excellent reputation for service (and Atlantic's not-so-swell service rep), as well as the fact that if I did buy from Atlantic, the car that I wanted (at Competition) would have to be driven some 35/40 miles from Smithtown to Lynbrook, made Competition the easy choice. I had a great salesman at Atlantic, but the management was unwilling to budge; guess they thought I was bluffing as to what Competition had promised. WRONG-O! Atlantic called me last week (while I was driving) to ask me if I was still interested in an M35x, and I told them that I was happy with the one I was currently (literally) driving, but that perhaps in a couple years I'd be in the market again. :P
These forums don't permit me to post salesmen's names, so if you make your email public in your profile, I'd be more than happy to discuss the transaction in greater detail.
PS - 13.8mpg driving like a madman. It an ugly figure, so I try not to look at the 'Info' or 'Status' pages too often.
Did you forget you were on the interstate? Or have the Texas cops gotten sticky in recent times? Limit's 75 here in AZ ... and they tolerage 85 without batting an eyelash. It's 400 miles from my door to the pier in San Diego ... 5 1/2 hours with a pit stop, and the first 30 minutes are wasted GETTING to the interstate.
You've done OK. Nothing down translates into an equivalent deal to mine that had $2,500 out the door and $608/month. I've seen a couple here that did a bit better, but a few bucks here or there at this price range ($50K) is immaterial.
:confuse:
If that's the case, you might try explicitly turning the setting off BEFORE putting in a DVD disc. The system might interpret that as a change to the default setting.
Pete
No Idea if more than 2 key fobs can be programed? Currently, I only have 1 fob. Durring delivery of my car one was misplaced by the dealer and I am awaiting my 2nd. Did the dealer tell you why a 3rd could not be programmed?
One thing that bugged me a bit though was the engine noise on the highway. I know that it is only a five speed, but at around 70 MPH the car was doing about 3000 RPMs. Does that sound right? I talked to the salesman this morning, and he said that when he drove one (not the same car), it was around 2400 RPMs at the same speed.
I think if they had a six speed with auto lock doors and rain sensing wipers, it would be the perfect car. Now it's just near-perfect.
The Infiniti website still does not show it as fully compatible. Someone did post that he got one ~ a month ago and said it seemed to work but not fully. I'm waiting for the green light myself. Blackberry works, but it's not functionally the same and would be a useless gadget for my purposes. :shades:
