This Accord buyer says that Chicago Honda dealers are beating Wisconsin prices by $1,000.

That'd pay your airfare to O'Hare.

In the market for a EX-L in the Mobile, AL area (36526).

Got high balled on some initial email quotes, but finally got a better offer from the Mobile dealer.

    Selling Price: 26,428
    Sales Tax: 1286.35
    Title Fee: 16.50
    Doc Fee: $599

    Final OTD: $28,383.85

Looks like they are giving almost $1100 off invoice which seems pretty good, but half of that savings is taken back by that junk doc fee. Do you think I have anymore room to get them lower?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
TMV and invoice are almost identical in your area so yeah, $1,100 off invoice looks good. And yeah, the doc fee is way inflated.

Maybe call and tell your salesperson that you'll do the deal today for $27,833 OTD. Otherwise you're going to keep looking for a better deal or maybe go look at a Tucson.

    Hi,

I am inSoCal and received the following quote on a 2016 CRV EX.

    Special Price: 22,493
    Destination: 900
+ 10% taxes, licensing and fees

    does this sound about right?

25,732 is what I get as an estimated OTD using that formula.

Any suggestions or advice is appreciated. Thank you!

TMV is a hair below invoice at $25,116 (including the destination). So ~$23,400 for your selling price before TTL is about $1,900 below invoice.

    And that's a good price.

Fees are capped in California and your taxes are what they are. You are doing good.

    Hello,
I am looking to buy a CRV 2016 2WD in Arizona. What is the best OTD price I can give

Hi @crv2018 - try that link in the post just above and change the trim from EX to whichever one you want. And then update your zip code to dial the number in.

Once you wind up on the pricing page, you'll see invoice and MSRP and True Market Value (TMV). Your goal will be to get a selling price better than TMV, since TMV is the average price paid in your region.

You may be able to get the selling price down a couple of thousand below invoice (including destination).

Anyway, once you figure out a good selling price, then add in your taxes (almost 11% in some areas in AZ!). It looks like the average AZ DMV fee is $532.

The sticky part is the doc fee - California caps their fees at $80 but the average fee in AZ is $410. That's a rip-off.

For example, TMV for an EX FWD in Phoenix is $24,819. That's $1,100 below invoice. Invoice is $25,909, so let's say you can get it for $23,909 (these numbers include the $900 destination).

So, $23,909 x 10% tax plus $532 DMV plus, oh, $50 for a doc fee comes out roughly to $26,881 for a good OTD price.

The other add-ons to watch out for are junk like paint/interior protection packages, wheel locks and tint. That stuff is usually over-priced and in our climate, you may be able to get a better quality tint from an independent shop for the same price or cheaper than what the dealer will charge you.

    Hello Stever

I am in NJ looking for 2016 CRV Touring Model, I am trying to be aggressive in my offer. I responded to dealerships with an OTD price of 32,000. I may be too aggressive.

    My best offer so far:

30,735 this includes destination and doc. fees of $399.

32,886.45 with taxes at 7 percent.

350.00 give or take on DMV fees.

    33, 236.45 out the door.

I am in no rush to buy, I am hoping there may some more rebates coming down the road before labor day.

    Couple of questions:

What do your think about the above offer?

Can I get closer to my desire 32000 OTD price?

I am also looking at the Nissan Rogue SL, but the CRV would be better for the long run, how do you feel about the two?

    Thanks Samsung

    Hey @samsung2016, welcome.

Your area isn't considered as competitive as it is just down the road a bit near DC. TMV is coming in close to invoice (invoice with destination is $32,186, depending on what color you get).

But your offer of $30,735 before the taxes isn't all that bad, almost $1,500 below invoice. They burn you a bit on the doc fees.

You should be able to do a bit better if you wait until the end of the month. And click on @brian125 's name and skim some of his Accord and Civic posts. He's in the NYC area (usually) and has a good handle on which dealers are good to work with.

I had great luck with a '99 Nissan Quest that I got new and drove up until I moved here two years ago. But - I'm not convinced that the Rogue is one of their better efforts. I'm a bit jaded since I skim all the problem posts around here and owners rarely bother to post that their car is doing great with no issues. But the growing pains Nissan had with their CVT gives me pause.

When I shopped the CR-V I cross-shopped the CX-5 in that size range and it's pretty nice too.

Let us know how the shopping goes.
  • samsung2016samsung2016 Member Posts: 6
    Stever

I have the same feelings about the Rogue, but I have a '02 frontier thats been great. I copied and paste the quote above to Brian125. I will take a look at the CX5.

I will continue to shop around, I am in no rush so I feel in control when taking to the sales personnel.

    Thanks Shawn

Try the link in this post to get your invoice and TMV price. That'll give you a good idea how aggressive your dealers are. We don't know what fees and taxes are included in your OTD number so it's hard to say how good it is. I'm not seeing invoice at the moment at that link so I think the site is updating that info (not sure I trust my math this late in the day either :) ). But I'm seeing a regional adjustment of almost $900, and that's not a great sign for deals.

The end of the month is typically better for deals.

Cash doesn't talk - dealers make money by putting financing packages together so if you go in and say you are going to pay cash, you may get a worse deal. You can always "change your mind" in the finance cubical when you go to pay and tell them you decided to write a check instead. Or if a deal comes with a good incentive but only if you finance, you can go ahead with the car loan and then pay it off the next week. Just make sure there's no pre-payment penalty (and there rarely is anymore).

If you buy a $28,000 car, in four years it will be worth about 11,000 bucks." — Dave Ramsey

A lot of better deals can be made if dealer knows you will finance the vehicle thru them . I have financed some of my vehicles with as little as 5k to get a better price. Some dealers might want 10k or 15k. What ever the amount once you get that 1st bill pay it off.

I currently have an offer of $30,000 on an AWD CR-V. Touring model. This is in North Carolina. After tax, dealer fees, and registration the total is $31,657. Does this sound  like a reasonable deal? Thanks

Invoice is $32,351 and TMV is $31,985. So your selling price of ~$2,350 below invoice sounds good, really good considering that NC isn't known for aggressive dealer prices. I think the summer doldrums are setting in and prices may be easing some more.

So long as you don't have a stupid $600 doc fee in there, go for it.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
@youtigernow, are you making okay progress? I see that you moved over to the CR-V leasing discussion.
  • cadkissoncadkisson Member Posts: 4
Thanks. They had given me a "best offer" of 30,300, but then were indeed adding a $600 dealer fee. I did negotiate off half of that to get to $30,000.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
lol, my $600 guess was spot on? Excuse me while I run down to the quick stop and grab a Powerball tix.

$300 is still about $250 too much, but dealers have to make money somewhere. The profit margin on selling new cars (before the add-ons) is supposedly down to 2%.

Please Help.. Just got this price from a dealer. Do you think its worth it? Should I negotiate?

Out The Door Price Quote for a 2016 Honda CR-V SE 4dr All-wheel Drive

    MSRP: $25,695
    Discount: $4,001

    VA State Business Tax: $39.43

Out The Door price is $24,264.69*
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
    I get a different MSRP - $26,745 ($25,845 plus the $900 destination).

If you are in NOVA, TMV is $24,321 and that's about $900 less than the $25,169 invoice (all my numbers include the destination).

So, compared to the total "Sonic" price of $22,549 before the taxes and fees, your quote is very good.

The dealer is overcharging for the processing fee, but that's all their profit, other than the holdback and any bonus money we don't know about.

We haven't seen many reports of ~$2,500 below invoice on Hondas in DC like your quote so it's not likely you will do a whole lot better at the end of the month.

Compared to, say, Pittsburgh buyers, you're doing great. If you want to hold out for the record deal, try to whack the processing fee in half. :)

Looking for CR-V SE AWD in Seattle, WA. Lease.
Want 25,000 OTD, is that absurd?
I see anywhere from 24-26 all over.

Still a good idea to not disclose I am leasing until after a purchase(cap cost) has been agreed upon?
And then just doublecheck residual, MF and all details?

Might snag an Accord Sport at the same time, dealers like to sell 2 cars at once enough to make big moves?
    Thanks!

Ah, the VA State Business Tax line threw me. And I'm not sure why you need to pay that if you aren't a VA resident, but taxes are weird.

Per @brian125 there are some good (i.e., aggressive) dealers in NY too. But they haven't been as good as around DC.

So yeah, I think you are good to go (Brian125 would tell you to wait until the end of the month and hammer them for a few hundred more. ;) ).

@lukeownsyou, I think you'll get a better response over in the leasing discussion.

I hear different stories about buying multiple cars at once. Not sure it makes any difference but it might.

Honda must be bumping up prices or something. We show $30,645 for MSRP.

Invoice is $28,819 and TMV is $28,158 for a Baltimore zip. My numbers all include the $900 destination.

So your selling price is $26,565 ($25,665 + $900) before the fees. That's a good number, about $2,200 below invoice.

The processing fee is about $250 too much and the MSRP on wheel locks is $56. So if you want to haggle and string it out a bit, there's about $300 you can justify cutting. Probably easier just to counter with a lower out the door price though, like $28,263.

But even if you just did the deal right now, you have really good price.

Remember, dealers have to eat too. ;)

For the benefit of those in Texas (and other states) where dealers shove down tinting as an installed item, please note that the EX and higher models (don't know about LX or SE) already have privacy glass in the rear (back as well as sides). So all that the dealer is doing is tinting the front two side windows!

In Raleigh, NC and looking to purchase a 2016 Honda CR-V EX FWD

    MVSP: $26,895
    Discount: $2,079
    Student Discount: $500
    Total: $24,316

    Dealer Admin: $649
    +tax,title,etc

They had some extras like wheel locks and all on the car but already had those thrown in. They're also throwing in a free remote start system.

Does this sound good or can I do better somewhere like the price of the vehicle or knocking down the Admin fee?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Hi @jamesmckinley. Invoice is $25,424, including the $900 destination and a $115 ad fee for the Raleigh area.

TMV is $24,835, so it sounds like your selling price before the student discount pretty average.

And yeah, the doc fee is about $600 too high, even though the NC average is an eye popping $550. And naturally you shouldn't be paying for Honda's advertising either.

While I'm being contrary, you may want to ask about the remote start. If it's not a genuine Honda accessory, I'd be a bit worried about an aftermarket electrical gizmo being added to my electrical system. Guess I've had too many issues with security systems (including one OEM one that was dealer installed). There's a lot of computers in cars these days that get weirded out by tapping into the wiring harness and it's expensive to trace those kind of issues down if they arise five years down the road.

I think I'd shop around some more and get some more quotes. We like to see CR-V selling prices come in $1,500 below invoice and then just add in the taxes and a nominal doc fee, and no junk fees (like paint protection, etc.).

I figure your target should be $25,424 minus the $115 ad fee minus $1,500 for a total of $23,809. Then throw in the student discount and you land at $23,309.

Average NC tax will be 7.5% and the average DMV fee is $28. (link) So I come up with $23,309 plus $1,750 in tax plus $28 DMV for an out the door price of $25,087.

In Westminster, MD (suburb of Baltimore) and worked the following e-mailing the internet sales managers at several dealerships. In the end, got the following for a 2016 CR-V Touring AWD out-the-door (vehicle had no dealer add-ons nor any other other gotchas like the extended warranty, etc. I did get the Honda 0.9% financing though as it was a better deal than PenFed.

    MSRP: $34,395
    Discount: $4485
Total Vehicle: $29,910 (Edmunds TMV is $31,349)

    For the record:
Dealer Processing $299 (standard for MD)
    Tax (6%) $1812.54
    Tags/Title $279

    Total out-the-door: $32300.54

@jamesmckinley I justbought a CR-V FWD Touring in NC. Shopped the Raleigh area with best price found in that area was at Leith Honda. Bought in Charlotte at Hendricks. Received a very competitive price and negotiated off another $300 ( referencing high dealer fee). Very easy, stress free, no hassle experience. Internet salesman was Andrew. Ended up $2,200 below invoice. No one else would touch the deal they gave me. Try them - might be worth the trip to Charlotte.

TMV for a Cleveland zip is just a bit more than invoice at $26,671. That includes the $900 destination.

When our TMV average comes in at invoice or a bit higher, that's not a great sign for killer deals. Don't know your market but you may not be able to get $2,000 or more below invoice. But it's certainly worth trying.

So, figure $24,500 plus ~8% tax, ($1,960), plus average DMV fee of $50 plus the capped doc fee in Ohio of $250 (capped but still a rip).

Looks like a very good target out the door number would be $26,760. So aim high, er, low and work your way up. Mind the other junk fees too.

Good luck and let us know how it goes. We'll be in prime end of the month buying season by next weekend.

Got quiet in here. Is everyone just waiting for the weekend? Or until the 2017s hit the lots?

Hello guys, I live in southeastern VA. Currently the best quote I got for EX-L FWD was 25.7k sale price (incl. dest.) at 2k below invoice 27.7k. The otd is 27.4k. TMV given by edmunds is 26.6k. This was just 1st round of price quoting, so I wonder if I can eventually go for like 2.5-3k below invoice. In my local areas the best deal for Accord Ex-l can be done at 3k below invoice, not sure if that can serve as a reference for crv. Thanks.

Sounds pretty good for the first round. My feeling is that you are in a smaller market with less competition than up near DC, but plenty of uneducated buyers are (still) paying over invoice up there. Assuming you are in the Norfolk area, you may want to shop Richmond, but it's very encouraging that you are starting out 2k below invoice.

Accord prices are more aggressive than CR-Vs. SUVs are driving the market. The new Civic is doing well though.
