Invoice (with destination) is $25,309 and TMV is $25,785. Assuming your tax is around 8%, that would pop an invoice deal to $27,309 OTD.
So I'm thinking your quote is about $1,000 under invoice and that's a good deal, with enough room to get the dealer to install your options (assuming the markup isn't too crazy).
Dealers won't sell you a car if they are going to lose money on the deal (they may give you a great deal, but rest assured there's another place they are making their money).
Not sure how your taxes work (some places charge them on fees, some don't etc.). Best ask the dealer for those details.
Only way to know for sure is to counter lower (or do the OTD number - $23,000 plus taxes).
Here's the "average" deal:
invoice $24,409
destination $900
tax @ 9% apprx. $2000
fees $374
So total OTD price to beat is $27,683
Your OTD quote in your first post is $26,450.
So you're ahead of the "average" by $1,200.
That's a good quote.
If you're saying they first told you as follows:
Quote of $23,599
tax @ 9% apprx. $2000
fees $374
OTD price then would be $25,973. So yeah, an even better deal by around $500. That's assuming all the fees are $374 and they aren't going to try to add the $900 destination to the $25,973 number.
Hope this makes sense.
Good luck!
Ask them for the breakdown and get all your numbers before you sign.
That said, don't worry too much about how they allocate the fees - what you really care about is the final out the door number.
Not sure I'd even worry about breaking down the numbers - you may want to tell the dealer that you are "close" and if they would throw in the rails and door guards, you'll buy "today".
Or ask them to come down another $500 and see what happens.
Me and my friends bought 3-4 cars there. I found their price best in Chicago area and no extra accessories charges. I bought my CRV EXL for 27450 including destination in Dec.
My sticking point is that I want under 26k in total. I can afford to wait, but what's everyone's experience in getting something lower?
I had to register my car in a different state and they were charging $400 for that. I was surprised when Honda on Grand sales person charged only $10 for temporary plate. I am happy that I did not buy from Honda City.
2016 Honda CR-V 2wd LX, May include splash guards and no other accessories.
$21,495 Sales price
$599 Dealer Fee
$112.00 Title Fee
$1,544 Taxes
------------------------------------
$23,750 Out the Door

Thank you.
Again, I've been quoted at 26,400 otd, for a 2016 CRV ex FWD with cargo and floor mats. Tax Rate here is 8%. I haven't been given the other info like fees.
Be nice to see if you could whack the Dealer Fee down. But $3,000 below invoice - hard to complain.
Welcome to the forum @touringcrvq.
Ah, the Bay Area. Never been cheap.
Invoice is $31,019, MSRP is $32,995 and TMV is $31,315.
Your quote is $900 below the TMV average and $400 below invoice. Not too shabby for that area.
Mind the fees and any gotchas as you finalize the deal, and good luck.
Numbers for Anaheim are Invoice $25,553, MSRP of $25,553 and TMV of $25,685. My sense is that SoCal doesn't deal much better than the Bay Area and at $900 below invoice plus the mats, you're doing fine.
Anyone else have recent numbers to report?
Invoice is $27,869, MSRP is $29,345 and TMV is $28,086. That's with destination but no taxes, options, etc.
Based on our prior exchanges, I'd aim from $26,000 or maybe $25,800 and then add in your taxes, and then try to ease into those rails and/or mats from there.
As you can see, I'm still hung up on $1,000 under invoice as being a good selling price for a CR-V in Anaheim and Orange County (I think I used an LA zip for you the other day, but got around the same results). There may be more money at the end of the month, but who knows. I was expecting car sales to fall noticeably by now but February was a great month and lots of people are able to get financing right now. My feeling is that the cash flow is making the dealers less "greedy" with individual deals since they are still moving lots of cars (this may not be true at smaller dealers).
I dunno, hang out 10 days and you may see another $500? But your guess is as good as mine. $1k under invoice sSeems to mirror @okk1's experience though.
I forget your taxes (9%?). Anyway, take the invoice, subtract $1,000 and then figure your taxes on that. That'll get you close to your target OTD number.
Extra fees are typically tossed in at the end of the transaction. People get tired and think, what's another $200, let's get this over with.
You can't avoid destination and taxes. But you can negotiate the OTD price down to effectively lower destination.
And focusing on an out the door number lets you ignore any extra fees, including stuff like etching, paint protection, fabric protection, nitrogen in the tires, ad fees and who knows what else. Most of that stuff is junk and is simply additional dealer profit. Doc fees are some of the worst.
Got quote for 2016 EXL 2 wd for 26971 plus fees . I was thinking of 27K OTD because someone had got price of 27800 OTD EXL awd? What do you think is fair price Stever?
EXL 2wd $26971 plus fees? How much was the fees? Like $3000? You left out the most important detail "fees". $27000 OTD for EXL is impossible; which means you would've got at least $2800 off the invoice. Unheard of...unless you pay thousands dollars for "fees"...
Since everyone's taxes are different, it helps in the forum to talk about the selling price. Then you can add in the taxes based on your state/city. The other fees can get tricky but you mostly have to watch out for protection packages and inflated doc fees.
Thanks for bringing us back to earth.
The question now is how much in fees they are charging over the taxes. Looks like your taxes are 6%? So $22,919 plus 1,375 comes to $24,294.
So there's $600 in fees that need to be accounted for. Some of that will be tags, but your OTD sounds like it may be ~$500 too high. Ask for a breakdown though (be curious to see how far off my math is -- if my guess is close, they'll have a $499 doc fee in there).
