New to Board. Not New to Edmunds.

Purchased 12/31 2016 CRV EX-L Modern Steel Metallic. Central Alabama Area after requesting prices from 10 Dealers:

    MSRP $29,195

    Dealer price $26,345

    Taxes and Fees. $1,255

    Total OTD $27,600

    This forum was very helpful.

Congrats! I guess it's a requirement to get the Steel Metallic if you're within 100 miles of Birmingham. :)
  • silverfox65silverfox65 Member Posts: 2
Actually not my first color choice. I wanted Mountain Air Metallic, but did not like the beige interior.

Purchased from a dealer in Anniston, AL.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
The beige would be tougher to keep clean, especially if you're near red clay country. I used to visit Gadsden but don't recall ever being down to your neck of the woods. I still get over to Huntsville now and then to visit a nephew. But don't worry - I'm not trying to hit you up for a test drive. ;)

I've bought several cars from the Anniston Honda and Toyota dealers. They are a low pressure dealer.

Also, I bought Honda Care 96 Months/ 120K Miles and 0 deductible for $1,100 through the dealer.

How's your deal coming @priya123? Seems like you've been tire-kicking for a couple of months now.

Purchased 2016 CR-V EX-L AWD (No add-ons, White with black) near chicago, IL

Sale price was $27454 + Doc fee 168+ Electronic filing fee 25 + TTL I could save 500 more if I finance through Honda but I was not eligible for that.
He did bot have my choice of color so I had to wait for 2-3 days to get the car. He got it from another dealer with some added accessories (Splash guard, All season mat, door edge guard and pinstripes).

I got even better price from City Honda Chicago and we were about to close the deal. I moved out because of their behavior and unnecessary fees which they add and they will say that they have to take it by law. I would suggest never to buy from there. I checked their review online and I am happy that I did not buy from there.

This dealer gave me second best price and they did not change anything. Very quick and no extra fees.

Hi, I received an offer in NJ for the 2016 Touring AWD for 29500 which excludes a $900 dest charge and all other charges/taxes.  Is this a good deal?  Also, I'd like to lease with no money down and have 3 months left on my currently leased CRV, at the time of negotiation, how can I gauge whether I'm given a good leasing deal?  Thank you.
  • ronenayronenay Member Posts: 3
Let me add that the total fees add up to 2500 on top of the 29500+tax

So, with destination, your selling price is $30,400?

I'm seeing invoice of $32,076, MSRP of $34,125 and TMV of $32,767. Those numbers include the $880 destination.

Sounds like you are doing well just on the "base" quote, but the fees are a concern. Your out the door goal should be at invoice (with destination) of $32,076 plus taxes. Well, the real goal should be $500 below invoice if not more. Then figure out the taxes and add in a modest amount for the doc fee.

Is $25,100 a good selling price (including destination) for EX-AWD in Cincinnati area? thanks,
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Yes @sean0247, we show invoice as $26,365, so you are well below that.

    Hi all,

I am new to these forums and have been trying to figure out what kind of OTD price I should be looking for in NJ for a 2016 CRV EX AWD. It seems like 27500 OTD would be a pretty good deal, is that accurate? The best I have been offered so far is 28,436 OTD.

Since we don't know all the various taxes and fees of all the dealers around the country, we focus mostly on the selling price. When you decide on what's a good number for you, then you can add in the taxes yourself. Anything over those two numbers added together has to be examined to see if they are reasonable. Some fees, like a tire disposal fee, are unavoidable. Some fees, like most doc fees, are inflated. So you discount them and come up with your OTD number.

In your case, take invoice of $26,365 and add in the tax. Looks like you're at 7%, so that's $1845.55. Throw in $100 for a doc fee and misc. and you're at $28,311. (The invoice I posted includes the destination btw and the site where I got the sales tax info could be wrong, so double-check that).

So your current quote seems a little bit higher than invoice. As you see on the forum, lots of buyers are getting a selling price of $500 to $1,500 below invoice (I think NJ is running closer to invoice than lots of places though - TMV is running about $300 more than invoice for a random NJ zip code).

Anyway, your OTD bottom line would be around $27,800. Naturally you'd start less and work up to that.

There's some tricks out today in this article:

10 Things You Should Tell Your Car Salesman

Note Number 7. "If you sell me the car for 'X,' I will buy it right now." That might work for you since you're an educated buyer and already know about OTD pricing.

The other alternative is to get more quotes and hang out until the end of the month when the deals tend to get better without as much haggling.

You can also go to our CR-V page and plug in your zip code and ask for a Price Promise certificate and see how that number stacks up.

Welcome to the forums. Let us know how it goes and good luck!

Hi, @stever, thank you for your reply. Picked up one today; here are my final numbers:

Selling price - $25,215 (include destination, and dealer installed all-season mats and truck tray)
    Processing fee - $299
    Tax - $1,785.98
Title and Registration fees - $90
    OTD - $27,389.98

This price requires finance with Honda Financial @1.99%. which, if desire, can be paid off after a few months.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
%1.99 is pretty cheap money, even if you don't decide to pay it off early.

Thank you for your response to my post.  I also enjoyed the article you linked above.  I received a counter offer that is 1800 lower and includes oil changes and car washes - looking back, I unknowingly used some of the advice in that article and think it made the experience more pleasant.

Looks like invoice (with destination) is $27,725, MSRP is $29,175 and the TMV average price paid for a random SoCal zip is $28,115.

I think you are doing okay, good doc fee. There may be some more room to budge off the selling price though. Not that up on the SoCal market but you have lots of dealers there so there may be some selling under invoice.

You may want to get some more quotes or shop this quote around.

Hi, @stever, this is off the topic, and I don't know if I should ask the question here. sorry, but I am also thinking about buying a 2016 Camry or Accord, but I can't find similar 'prices paid and buying experience' thread for 2016 Camry, I haven't looked for Accord yet. Are such threads exist for them? If so, could you please post the web links for me? Thanks in advance.

    Here's the Accord one:

Don't ask me why but most of the pricing posts around here are focused on Hondas. Please feel free to start your own discussion for the Camry - instructions here.

    Hi Stever,
I got a quote on 2016 CR-V EX with selling price 24,270 in Carlsbad, Southern California. Can you check if this price is good? Or It would be better to wait until the end of month or more? Thanks for your info in advance.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
FWD I assume. Our pricing page shows invoice of $25,149, MSRP of $26,725 and TMV of $25,674.

So your quote is about $900 below invoice. That's good enough to pull the trigger in my book. Don't really see too many better, especially in SoCal.

Yeah, you may get some more off at the end of the month, but who knows. If it's your local dealer and the color is good, you could be enjoying the drive up to Palomar by the weekend. :)

Those prices above include the destination btw.

Steven. Thanks for your check. I may pull the trigger soon.

Got the following offer for 2016 CR-V EX-L AWD:

    $28,000 Selling Price
    $199 Doc/Service Fee
    $199 Accessories (Anti-Theft Etching)
    $139.50 Title/Registration Fees
    $1623 estimated taxes

    Total OTD $30,165

Do you feel like that is worth a deal Steve? This is in Wisconsin. Feel like I need to negotiate out the accessories fee. I tried offering 27k selling price and they balked at it. Also seeing other better offers in the Chicago area makes me feel like I can do better. Appreciate your input!

Hm, invoice with destination is $28,659, MSRP is $30,475 and TMV is $29,277.

Up until 18 months ago I lived in the UP and we shopped the CX-5, xB, Forester, and the CR-V (all 2015 models) hard for a weekend in Madison.

My impression was that the Honda dealer wouldn't shoot the moon but would do a pretty good deal. I also shopped the Honda/Toyota dealer up in Ashland and they seemed pretty competitive for a small town (kind of an odd combo to have one dealer with those two brands). Felt that pricing was better than the Michigan dealers I shopped at least.

But lots of people in Milwaukee and Madtown shop Chicago. Drive a little, save a lot.

Your quote isn't all that bad except for the junk etching fee. That's worthless to me. So yeah, I'd garner a few more quotes and show the best Chicago one to the local folks and invite them to match it. Maybe they'll get close enough to save you the drive. Would really like to see them knock off $300 just to get rid of the junk fee and some of the doc fee. You might get there by waiting until month end.

Thanks Steve. They have already contacted me again about coming down another 500 to 27500 selling price. I am working with a Chicago area dealer who seems promising to beat whatever they offer.

I do have another question for you. Have you seen 2015 CR-V's going at much lower price then 2016 at this time? I just am under the impression there isn't and that there isn't much difference between the two years with the CR-V.

    Appreciate your help!
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
That's my impression too - haven't really been seeing a lot of posts with screaming deals on leftover 2015s.

I am in Washington state. Zip code 98037.
Looking at a 2016 CRV EX All Wheel Drive. No additional options.

    Current dealer offer is
    $26509 selling price.
    $150 Document fee
    $45 in registration fees
$230 Vehicle licence estimate (I should get a refund of $100-$120 one plates are issued by the state.
    $2551 sales tax (9.5%)
    $29,547 out the door.

They include a nationwide lifetime powertrain, transmission and all wheel drive warranty for the original owner and 2 year factory reccomended service in the sale.
    How does that stack up?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Hi @giff98037, invoice is $26,490, and TMV is $27,075.

Your price is around invoice and your area isn't known for terrific deals. So for the greater Seattle area, you're doing okay. The doc fee is $100 high so maybe you can complain about that, but the dealer is going to counter with the "free" service, so that may be a why bother.

    Enjoy the new ride!

Thanks stever. So the ex model I was preparing to buy sold before I committed to the purchase. Since then, I have reconsidered my color choice and whether or not to stick with the EX or to jump up to the EXL. I am now leaning toward the EXL in the urban titanium metallic with beige leather. I considered the blue, kona coffee, and basque red. I prefer the tan over the gray interior which is the only color available with blue or red exterior colors. The Kona coffee is a nice color and the sales manager was pushing it over all other colors due to it looking like black at night and not showing dirt as bad as the black or urban titanium. I keep coming back to urban titanium with beige leather and can't imagine it showing dirt substantially worse than the others. Anyway what would be a reasonable increase in price to jump to the EXL in my area. Zip code 98037? I do like my salesman a lot and with the 2 years maintenance and unlimited powertrain warranty am hesitant to take my offer to other dealers if the price is within reason.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
The invoice difference between the EX and EX-L AWD versions is around $2,300. Invoice doesn't mean as much as it used to but it's still about the best benchmark we have to work off of (with bonuses and spiffs, the real cost to the dealer is lower than invoice, but that's a difficult number to figure out).

Maybe start with a $1,900 to $2,000 bump and try to at least keep the end result under $2,300.

I like the lighter interiors and think a tan would be a good "sunny" choice for the Pac NW.

Remember that deals tend to be best at the end of the month and in this case, as the next two weeks wind down, your salesperson may get a bit antsy about his January bonus money and might sweeten the deal a bit.

But you may lose your next choice if you wait too long.

Please keep us posted on how it goes.

They are quoting $28800 selling price. Close enough? They are telling me that is $1 over invoice.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454

You can look up invoice price here and at lots of other car sites. I get $28,659 for invoice (and that includes the $880 destination).

Not quite $1 over but "close".

Ordinarily I'd advise holding out for more, but I'm just not sure that's possible up around Seattle.

Anyone else shopping up in that corner of the US?

Ran across this new article on the site that may be of interest, especially if you want to try waiting until the end of the month:

When You Shouldn't Sleep on a Car Deal

Your deal isn't "killer" @giff98037 but it's not bad by a long shot.
  • giff98037giff98037 Member Posts: 5
Steve, have you factored in the unlimited lifetime powertrain warranty? What does that cost if paying for it as part of the purchase? I got them to add a year of maintenance (now 3 years).
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
No, I didn't give the dealer any credit for the powertrain warranty. I don't really trust them and I figure the dealer will always be looking for ways to deny a claim or there will be restrictions, like you can't get your car serviced anywhere else, or you have to use the severe service schedule in the manual, or that they will charge a deductible to look at your car.

You have to read the fine print on that stuff.

It's okay to add some value to your deal if that stuff is of interest to you. My sister got a new car a couple of weeks ago and I advised her not to get the maintenance service plan. But she did anyway, so don't worry, you won't hurt my feelings for getting the plans. B)

Back to your cost question. Lots of those plans used to be backed by US Fidelis and are probably being sold by another similar or successor outfit to the dealers. The usual rule of thumb is that there's a 100% markup on these if you buy an aftermarket warranty. So an $800 extended warranty would cost the dealer $400. When the dealer buys a plan for their entire inventory, my guess is that the cost to the dealer is closer $200 a car. Remember too that the plan won't kick in until the 5/60 factory warranty expires. Most people don't drive them forever and never take advantage of it.

But I'm just guessing and have no insider knowledge on these things.

    Hi,
Got this quote in NJ for a 2016 CR-V EX AWD:

    $25,500 (price incl destination)
    $399 doc fee
    $150 reg & license fees
    +7% sales tax

Is this a good price? Please let me know, hoping to pull the trigger in the next week or two.

Thanks in advance for any advice!
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Invoice and TMV are close (invoice with destination is $26,365).

We like seeing $500 to $1,000 off invoice back "East" and you are right in the good part of the ballpark, maybe a little better for NJ than usual.

The doc fee, as is typical, is high. If you want to drag your heels, you may be able to lower that by holding off a week or so until the end of the month and then trying to whack your current quote down another couple of hundred bucks.

    Good luck!
  • joe7253joe7253 Member Posts: 2
Awesome, thanks. Indeed will see whether can drive that price down a bit more next week (after the big snowstorm clears outta here anyway). Question though -- did you mean the $399 doc fee is typical, or is high even for NJ? It's a fee that's entirely up to the dealer to set (ie pure profit for them), correct?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
    edited January 2016
Any doc fee over $50 is high imo. But high ones are typical (the ones in Florida are totally nuts). But yeah, there's some new Homeland Security forms and the usual DMV stuff (more if you are financing), but most of that is automated these days and the dealers either farm it out or have a clerk filling out the forms on a computer screen. Regulatory costs have increased for the dealers but $400 a car? Seems like a lot of padding there to me.

Tomorrow might be a good time to do an email deal (except that no one may be in the showroom).
