A friend of mine replaced his S class with a Panamera. Took it on a road trip from Seattle to New Mexico and loves loves loves it.

approaching retirement age consider the Panamera to be at or near the top of our "dream car" lists

Notice the correlation of eye sight deterioration and liking that Porsche. Just saying.

Kidding, of course. Styling is subjective. I actually like several French cars. :D

...the Panamera kind of reminds me of the Citroen DS:

    I kinda like this oddball:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlHISryGUYQ

It's the video with the C6 on Top Gear. They show how smooth the ride is filming a horse race, then compare to a kidney-crushing BMW's ride.

FFWD to 6:24 for the Citroen, 7:06 for the Bimmer.

Check out that rear window! Like fine art! ;)

Yup, they actually surveyed me a couple of weeks ago in regards to naming the thing.

One of the names which they appear to be pushing is "Seeker" which I don't like at all. "Subaru Seeker" just leaves the door open for ridicule IMO and for some reason I was reminded of Beeker from the Muppets, lol :D

Marketing is smoking crack again. :D

Seeker ? Suggest Geeker..........pay me no mind; should be working , but I'm rained out.
  • tifightertifighter Member Posts: 3,795
Wow, terrible name. In their defense, its always easier to crap on names than to come up with them. Naming sessions are some of the most painful meetings ever.

That would explain the naming schemes of Audi, BMW, Infiniti, Lexus, Mercedes, Saab, Scion and any other alpha-numeric ones I missed.
  • anythngbutgmanythngbutgm Member Posts: 4,277
    :D

My memory of the survey is a little blurry, but IIRC one of the other names was "CrossTrail". I guess the Crosstour isn't going unnoticed (or forgotten) by the competition after all lol.

There were some other names as well which I don't remember but none of them were really that good IMO. I don't know why Subie doesn't revert back to just calling it "Impreza Outback"? I mean, it's familiar and just like the Outback is to the Legacy, it's just a trim package... I don't think there are many people who are fooled into thinking it's a totally different vehicle. :)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Cross in a name is the kiss of death, see VehiCross and Crosstour sales.

Outback Sport is an easy fall-back.

I think Lincoln has the worst. Who really remembers which is the MKX, MKS, MKT, MKZ, etc? While I get its supposed to be a contemporary version of Mark whatever, the names are just too similar. Acura is not a lot better, but at least they don't all start with the same two letters.

Figures that I'd miss the worst example. The Scions don't bug me, maybe because there's not many of them and I like the brand.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
To this day I'm not sure which are which. Z was Zephyr, right? X for crossover. No idea which is the big crossover or the big sedan.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure if MKX was the big crossover or the little crossover.

MKZ is Zephyr, right? That I know.

Actually I think marketing got bored and fell asleep: MKzzzzzzz....

I think they sell every FIT that they choose to make and import... Guessing the numbers would be higher, if it made financial sense for Honda...

I'd take a Puke over a Quest or Armada...

There was that matter of an earthquake a while back. Honda may be focusing a bit more on JDM production.

Then how 'bout one with the GT-R powertrain?

Why oh why didn't they do this with a Cube instead?

Lincoln is such a screwed up brand in so many ways. If Ford pulls off its resurrection it will be quite the upset victory - kind of like the Cubs getting into the World Series.

Saw a red Veloster today - I don't not like it. I really see it as a modern CR-X without the sport options. Potential to sell a lot of them, IMO.

Also saw an unplated new ML, but as it was white and mommy-mobile spec driven by a 20-something male, I suspect he was a dealer employee.

Or how GM turned Caddy around. And that only took 1 model to do it.

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

I suppose there is some resemblance from certain angles but then I love the ID/DS styling too.

If I lived in Europe and could afford one, Id consider a Citroen C5 or C6. They look really cool IMO

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,507
Large French cars traditionally have awful resale, so even if you couldn't afford a new one, you could get a used one. IIRC I have only seen one or two C6 in my times in Europe - I remember one vividly as it was in Switzerland with Liechtenstein plates.

Saw a big mouth bass Sonata - I guess that's the hybrid model or the turbo, I forget.

...gunmetal gray metallic Chrysler 300 going NW on Marins Mill Road near Bingham in NE Philly. The 300 would make a nice replacement for my Grand Marquis someday. Make mine dark red!

This AM I saw a couple of cars that are so far rare in my neck of the woods, both parked:

-Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback, the second I have seen. From behind they can easily be mistaken for a new focus 5-door. Nice looking rig but equipped the way I'd like with the dual-clutch trans they sticker for $28K! For a Mitsu? Not from me they don't.

-Fiat 500. It was white, which I generally don't like on cars, but it works surprisingly well on this one. Perhaps because the originals all seemed to be white and the new one is pretty close to the original's looks. It's twice as big as in '57 but tiny in today's world.

    Hybrid.

It's the least attractive model, too.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Fiat 500

I keep seeing a black one on my street, today it pulled in to the Elementary School. Must be a teacher's car.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
After getting over the shock of gas going from $3.32 in the NJ Turnpike to $3.99 in CT, I saw a lot of $$$ cars:

Black Lambo Gallardo Spyder, top down. Oddly enough it spent the night at the Double Tree hotel. Does. Not. Compute.

Ferrari F430. I'm sure he's on the wait list for a new one.

    2 Dodge Vipers.

Also saw the first new Camry in the flesh, a black one, in Shelton, CT, near the apple orchard we visited. Small town that looks sort of beat up, I think the Camry was the only thing that was new there.

Peak gas price was $4.19 for regular in the Bronx, NY. Yikes.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,507
Indeed it is. Overdone styling with a big mouth, thanks but no thanks.

Been seeing more Lexus CT lately, it seems...I'd take one over a loaded Prius, if those were my only choices.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,507
Maybe Lambo owner was actually stretching and working to afford it, rather than having it handed to him. The fact that it was spending the night outside at all is actually a good sign - it's being driven.

I think I had a new Camry behind me the other day, but I never got a look at the side.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Recession seemed to have hit CT a little harder than the DC area, no surprise given the stimulus spending I guess.

Still, there's lots of old money there. These guys are rich and have been rich for generations.

Also saw a Mustang GT500 now that I think about it.

Shelton was an industrial city that lost many industries in the 70's and 80's.

It's too far away from NYC to really be a suburb and get some of that wealth. Most of that is concentrated in lower Fairfield county - Norwalk, Stamford, Greenwich, Westport et al.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
That's more or less what it looked like. Abandoned, yet oddly enough tons of traffic congestion. They need to reinvent themselves, maybe as a harvest attraction of some sort.

I was in all those places from Friday to last night. Mostly Norwalk and Milford, though.

I saw my first Audi A7 yesterday, it was black and I thought pretty attractive but I'd prefer the A6 Avant (wagon) it replaces.

Saw an Accent 5 door on the highway, silver. Not bad looking for a B-segment car. It manages not to look dorky.

Also saw a Tucson parked on K Street in down town DC. I seem to see a lot more Sportages, wonder which had sold more (cumulative)?
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,507
The 4 door model is the dorky one, there comes a time when a car is too small for a trunk
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
True, the whole B-segment class of sedans is dorky.

Heck, that's what I don't like about the BMW 1 series. Too tall, not long enough. Dorky.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,133
"Heck, that's what I don't like about the BMW 1 series. Too tall, not long enough. Dorky. "

Yep, for a car that was supposed to re-invent the 2002, it didn't come close...
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,507
Remember the Aveo sedan? That was the poster child for too small for a trunk dorkiness. Fiesta is on pretty thin ice there, too.

I like the 1er 3 door somehow, it's weird but interesting.

    Why, because it's German?

If that thing were Korean you'd be all over it. ;)

The convertible isn't as bad. Loses the tall greenhouse look.

Because it is weird, a throwback. Reminds me of an old two door sedan in a way - 2 doors but not a coupe. Not many cars like that in this market, but we don't get it anyway - more crossovers and other bloatmobiles for us.

If it was Korean it would have a weird name, light clusters stretched back to the B-pillars, and probably some familiar styling cues ;)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
No, that would be a Peugoet.

Except for the familiar part. ;)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Pair of BMW X3s. They're selling briskly in image-is-everything Potomac.

Saw a black Accent sedan on the DC Beltway this AM, too.

Then a silver Audi A5. Handsome car, but reminds me too much of the Sebring/Avenger coupes from a decade or so ago.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
...black VW CC sedan travelling south on Bingham Street crossing Martins Mill Road in NE Philly.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,507
Nobody overstyles like Hyundai...well, maybe Nissan is trying.

Saw an A5 cabrio in Atlanta today, odd sight anywhere, especially here
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Thankfully there are better looking clones for nearly all of them at the Kia store.

Except the Genesis, which is, ironically, my favorite Hyundai. Luckily it's conservative and has aged well, IMHO.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,507
    Kia has better styling IMO

Of course the Genesis has aged well, it's an E60 without the Dame Edna detailing :shades:
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
And less of a Bangle trunk, too. ;)
